Way back in the mid-1970s, Billy Cobham released an album that altered the course of my life, The Album Crosswinds and the track Heather just took my musical mind in a different direction, I started to go to Jazz clubs to hear and see this music that set my mind on fire. Through Billy's music, I was introduced to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin, Al DE Meola, Chick Corea, Return To Forever, Weather Report and so much more, the floodgates to my musical mind were opened. Fast forward many years, I jumped for joy when I had the opportunity to Promote Billy Cobham, the second time I promoted Billy we became on speaking terms After the afternoon sound check we entered into a discussion about the dynamics of changing a band's lineup by adding or subtracting one or two members – then I told Billy that one of my favourite all-time tunes was a track called Heather from the album Crosswinds. I thanked Billy for having a big influence on me in 1977. Since I started in the world of puppetry, my artistic career and my life changed completely. And I felt as if I finally found the art form that is generous enough and that englobes all the other art forms, because puppetry is the meeting of the art of the scene, art of the stage, and the visual arts and music. So for me it is like the most complete and generous art form that ever existed. - Nina Vogel  Meet award-winning Brazilian multidisciplinary artist, puppeteer, singer, actress, and director Nina Vogel. Her approach to puppetry and art has a strong spiritual influence inherited from both her indigenous Guarani and Tikuna ancestry. Her work has been performed all over the world and she is the creator and performer of  Peter and the Wolf part of 2022 RUTAS Festival. Peter and the Wolf, the classic story and music by Sergei Prokofiev, bursts to life with glorious puppets crafted in ateliers in Brazil. Created by master craftsmen and artist Nina Vogel, from the very musical instruments featured in the symphony, the visually stunning costume from which the puppets appear and disappear delights children with an unforgettable performance as they experience the fable for the first time. Supported by Toronto's Euphonia Chamber Ensemble with Musical Direction by award-winning Conductor, Composer and Pianist Maziar Heidari, Nina Vogel presents this ingenious and beautiful spectacle with an accompanying short film, ANIMA, which takes the audience on the fantastical journey that Nina Vogel followed to create this contemporary interpretation of Peter & the Wolf. Our co-host for this episode is a queer Brazilian-Canadian playwright and writer, producer, performer, and director from Tkaronto, Yago Mesquita. He creates slice-of-life-made-surreal character-driven work from a young, queer, first-generation Canadian lens, heavily informed by his experience and that of friends, family, and fellow artists.  For more information about the RUTAS FESTIVAL. One of the most fascinating things we love about musicians, is when they decide to completely change their direction. Whether thats musical direction or they simply fall out of love with the business. We have all experienced moments when our favourite music icons leave their fans confused and scratching their heads, wondering what happened. Or in some cases when it's an ex band member, who completely rips the band apart with them to go do something else. In this podcast episode we look at a few female artists that interest both Ian and Mick and explore the music they started creating and then suddenly decided to change direction in music or actually quit altogether. This episode looks at their reasons for doing so, was it the right choice or should they have stayed? Our hosts discuss stars such as Alanis Morisette, Anne Briggs and Bobby Gentry and the fascinating stories on both their music and lives.

The theatre production was a major production by Kobugs, an offshot of Michael Eustice's Theatre Bugs. 00:43:31 Janet Badgery Most of us have grown up, having been read stories by our parents and grandparents. However, not many of us can say that our grandma was not only reading us a story she wrote herself, but a story that was read by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of kids across Australia over many generations. I talk, of course, about Dorothy Wall's granddaughter, Janet Badgery. Janet, was was your first realisation that there was more to Dorothy Wall than "just being your grandmother"? Did you ever talk about Blinky Bill with her and, if so, how did such conversations come up? Why do you think it became so popular? Did your proximity to Blinky Bill make you popular at school with students and teachers? If you had to identify with one of the characters, who would it be? What did Dorothy think of the 1990s' animation work and Robyn Moore's voicing of Blinky Bill? There is an old-fashioned sense about Blinky Bill. Did Dorothy ever yearn to modernise the look and feel or was there something about that 1930s artwork style that was bound into it's DNA? And what did you enjoy most about Blinky Bill Is On The Loose? 00:53:34 Robyn Moore aka Blinky Bill There aren't many people living in Australia who've never heard Robyn Moore's voice. It's been everywhere. But one of the most endearing and enduring roles she's ever voiced has been that of Blinky Bill. We'll hear how she came to be charged with the responsibility of bringing life to the voice of this iconic Aussie, along with his female friends. How did you become so enmeshed in Blinky's life? How did you go about building Blinky's voice? Were there any particular cultural clues? How long were you actively involved in Blinky Bill media content creation? Blinky is known for going off on adventures and turning up where least expected. Your role of voicing Blinky Bill seems to share the same DNA. Can you share some of your own adventures? For adults reading the books, are there any tips for voicing Blinky? 01:16:18 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have a song from Blinky Bill Is On The Loose called the Bilby Bop, and performed by Michael Mills and Chloe Bremner. She has been applauded extensively in a variety of roles that include Composer, Musical Director, Arranger and Pianist.Early training in classical piano and study at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, confirmed an ambition harboured by Carmel. She wanted to create, write and perform music, chiefly in the genre of musical theatre. In 2001 she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States and subsequently graduated from NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program.A dynamic approach to her work and an easy charm saw her triumph in a succession of creative tasks; transcribing, teaching and accompaniment, building collaborative relationships and demonstrating solid instincts. These experiences soon lead to roles in Musical Direction. As Musical Director, she has guided the Broadway productions of If/Then, Hands on a Hardbody, American Idiot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Off-Broadway credits include Everyday Rapture, Vanities and Elegies - A Song Cycle by William Finn.As Composer, Carmel’s first musical, Renascence, was produced Off-Broadway and was named Best New Musical at the 2018 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. A song-cycle titled Well Behaved Women had its premiere performance in New York at Joe’s Pub in January, 2020.Carmel Dean is a remarkable musician and an inspiring woman. She is incredibly eloquent. We connected with Carmel remotely, to traverse her extraordinary career thus far, and obtain a fascinating insight into the construction of a Musical narrative.

In 1983, something was happening in the Western states – the birth of a training course focused entirely on the Musical Theatre. There was no music theatre education in the country, and after starting the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Dr Geoff Gibbs made the creation of the course his next goal. For nearly 20 years, Denis Follington was on the staff of this much sought Musical Theatre BA at WAAPA. The course has graduated students including Meow Meow, Eddie Perfect, Lisa McCune, Dean Bryant, Lucy Durack, Rodney Dobson, Carmel Dean and Simon Gleeson. In 1997, he took the helm and steered the course for another 3 years as Head of the department. The course garnered a national reputation for producing graduates who were prepared, focused, knowledgable and dependable. WAAPA graduates walked into the country’s commercial musicals – and proved themselves adept at television and plays too. Impressed with the success of the course at WAAPA, he was lured by Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore to build a Music Theatre course of their own, attracting students from around the world.STAGES spoke to Denis about the essentials of such an education, the history of the course at WAAPA and his first cast recording of a Broadway show.

Adam's career began in 1997 when he was asked to write a demo for a new Comedy Central series, "South Park." His demo secured him the job, and his guitar and mandolin music became the signature sound of the show. Adam scored the first 4 seasons of South Park and played bass guitar in Matt Stone's and Trey Parker's punk band, DVDA. In 1998 Adam began working for Disney, composing scores for five series and three movies, including one of Disney's most popular and longest-running shows, "Kim Possible." In 2005 Adam received his first Emmy nomination for his underscore music on "Kim Possible." Adam returned to Comedy Central in 2007 to write music for "The Sarah Silverman Program." In addition to writing the underscore, Adam worked with Sarah and the cast, recording and producing the songs for the third season. When Dreamworks/Nickelodeon's, "Penguins of Madagascar" went into production, Adam was hired as composer. He wrote the main title theme, the underscore and co-wrote the songs. Between 2010-2014, Adam was nominated for eight Emmy awards and two Annie awards for his work on the show, winning an Emmy in 2011 for "Outstanding Achievement in Musical Direction and Composition" and again in 2012 for "Outstanding Original Song." THE GANGSTER CHRONICLES 1.5A special edition of Yesterday's News focusing on the notorious scoundrels of the Prohibition and Depression eras. - We're beginning this series with newspaper accounts of the trail of terror blazed by one of America's most famous, dare I say most beloved, gangsters, John Dillinger. - From the time he was paroled from the Michigan City prison in May, 1933, to the time he was gunned down by police on a Chicago sidewalk 14 months later, John Herbert Dillinger was one of America's most notorious scoundrels. - In previous chapters, we read the newspaper accounts of the escape of ten convicts from the Indiana penitentiary at Michigan City and the bloody delivery of Dillinger from the Lima, Ohio, jail; how Dillinger and his new gang blazed a trail of terror across the Midwest until he was captured in Tuscon, his second daring escape using a gun he made from broomstick, and his continuing reign of terror. In this chapter, we’ll hear about one more narrow escape from the clutches of the law and one final bank robbery. I’m pleased to announce that on Sunday, May 8, I will be recording the final chapter of the Dillinger saga from the main stage of the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, where Dillinger saw his last film just minutes before meeting his fate on the sidewalks of the Windy City. Please visit my website, www.truecrimehistorian.com, for updates on that event. - Musical Direction by Chuck Wiggins
