For the final episode of 2024 we're joined by the formidable Pat Kane, who answers our questions about his dual career as a musician and writer with what co-host Martin Colyer describes as "an almost frightening eloquence". Commencing with the formative memories of his late father singing Frank Sinatra songs to him at bedtime — and his lifelong fixation with Ol' Blue Eyes — Pat talks about Hue and Cry, the R&B-infused pop group he formed with his brother Greg in 1983. Reflections on the success of singles such as 1987's 'Labour of Love' prompt a general discussion of '80s "Brit Soul", with significant input from fellow practitioners Mark Pringle and Martin Colyer. The two linchpins of Hot House recall the 1987 sessions they recorded in the Southern-soul oasis of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After bringing the Hue and Cry story up to the present day, Jasper introduces clips from Daryl Easlea's 2001 audio interview with Chic's Nile Rodgers. As a tribute to the group's Alfa Anderson, who died two days before this episode was recorded, Daryl's splendid interview provides the perfect excuse to express our love for disco's greatest self-contained band. Finally, we ask our guest about his exceptional writing as a cultural and political journalist, focusing in particular on his brilliant pieces about Brian Eno (1995) and Michael Jackson (2009). Mark and Jasper then talk us out with quotes from (and remarks on) their favourite newly-added pieces in the RBP library. Many thanks to special guest Pat Kane. Subscribe to his Substack at patkane.substack.com. Pieces discussed: Frank Sinatra, Hue and Cry: "How Well Do You Know Your Brother?", Headin' South: Muscle Shoals '87, Brian Eno: Jingle the Other One, The Man in Our Mirror: Michael Jackson, Nile Rodgers audio, Have You Heard What They're Singing These Days?, Don Cherry, Alicia Bridges, Billy Fury, Rage Against The Machine.
According to figures from Ebay, Irish people are far more likely to regift this Christmas than any other European country. So, what is the art of regifting and how do you make the most of it this festive season?Joining Anton Savage to discuss is Pat Kane, Sustainability Advocate and Founder of Reuzi.
pizza rules! thanks for joining me from the future down under!
Pat Kane is a sustainability advocate and strategist, speaker, writer and the founder of reuzi, a business that has evolved to become a whole hub for environmental living and awareness. Here Pat writes about sustainability for SMEs - and while some SMEs may perceive sustainable practices as costly, the reality is that they often lead to cost savings in the long run. Sustainability is no longer a buzzword reserved for large multinational corporations or niche industries; it is a critical business imperative that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford to overlook. As global awareness around environmental and social issues grows, SMEs are increasingly recognising that sustainable practices are not just ethically sound, but also economically advantageous. The integration of sustainability into the core strategy of an SME can unlock new opportunities, enhance brand reputation, and build resilience against future challenges. The value of sustainable practices The importance of sustainability for SMEs stems from several interrelated factors. First and foremost, consumers are becoming more discerning, favouring companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices. This shift in consumer behaviour is not a passing trend but a fundamental change in how people choose to spend their money. SMEs that fail to adapt risk alienating a significant portion of their customer base. Regulatory landscapes are also evolving, with governments around the world implementing stricter environmental and social governance (ESG) requirements. SMEs that proactively embrace sustainability will find themselves better positioned to comply with these regulations and avoid potential penalties. Another critical factor is the financial implications of sustainability. Although some SMEs may perceive sustainable practices as costly, the reality is that they often lead to cost savings in the long run. Efficient resource management, waste reduction, and energy-saving measures can significantly lower operating costs. SMEs that incorporate sustainability into their operations are more likely to attract investment, as investors increasingly prioritise companies with strong ESG credentials. These companies are viewed as lower risk, given their proactive approach to managing environmental and social issues, which can lead to better financial performance over time. Starting on the sustainability journey might seem daunting for SMEs, especially given limited resources and expertise compared to larger companies. However, the key is to start small and gradually build upon those efforts. The first step is to assess the current environmental and social impact of the business. This could involve evaluating energy usage, waste production, supply chain practices, and community engagement. Identifying areas where improvements can be made will provide a clear roadmap for action. Once the assessment is complete, setting achievable goals is essential. These goals should be specific, measurable, and aligned with the company's overall business strategy. For example, an SME might commit to reducing its carbon footprint by a certain percentage within a set timeframe or to sourcing a portion of its materials from sustainable suppliers. These goals should be revisited regularly to track progress and make adjustments as needed. Learning from SMEs that have already embarked on their sustainability journey can provide valuable insights and inspiration. Take, for instance, the story of Innocent Drinks, a UK-based company that started as a small business and has grown into a well-known brand. From the outset, Innocent Drinks placed a strong emphasis on sustainability, using 100% recyclable packaging and committing to sourcing ingredients ethically. Their approach to sustainability is deeply embedded in their brand, which has resonated with consumers and contributed to their success. Patagonia is another great example that, while larger, offers lessons in transparenc...

Indra Adnan has been exploring this concept in communities around the world as well as in grassroots political organising. The question of how we reshape democracy, walking the fine line between stagnation and populist rage - is the defining problem of our time - with a coherent strategy, we can shape anything. In its absence, we're going to end up spinning in pointless circles, arguing about trivia while the world burns. We set this podcast up months ago, thinking we'd talk about the example Scotland sets for the UK and the rest of the world as a way *maybe) to shape democracy. And then Nicola Sturgeon stepped down and Scotland fell into the kind of turmoil I thought only impacted England. And then the turmoil in England sparked a general election. So now we're talking about how we can use this moment to affect the digital, distributed democracy that we need with two of the smartest people in our eco-system - people who give their entire lives to thinking about this question: Indra Adnan and Pat Kane of The Alternative. This week's guests are Indra Adnan and Pat Kane. Indra is the author of The Politics of Waking up: Power and Possibility in the Fractal Age and Pat is a musician, writer, curator, consultant, activist and futurist and his substack is absolutely essential reading for anyone who wants to keep up to date with the ideas in our eco-system. The reason we're here, they're, Co-Initiators of The Alternative, which is a socio-political platform hosting #PlanetA: new ground to stand on for a flourishing future - and a daily blog and a forum, or perhaps a melting pot - for new ideas and new ways being. Acknowledging that the systems we are embedded in - media, economic, political - take our power away. The Alternative and Planet A ask us how we achieve the world we know deep down is possible. You have to experience The Alternative really to understand what it is to explore ideas at the leading edge of our emergent inter-becoming, to think through the lens of cosmo-localism, to hold new truths of who and how we are and to frame radical new political options in this age of cardboard cut-out politicians spouting ever more stale lines that were out of date in the 80s and are certainly not fit for purpose in the third decade of the twenty first century. So this conversation takes us deep into this territory. Recorded on the day after the EU elections, as France heads to the polls and the UK's general election descends ever further into infantile name-calling and political posturing that no longer even pretends to be the adults in the room, it was - and is - really refreshing to explore ideas of what's possible with people whose entire lives revolve around the concepts of emergent change. She's a maven of all things mended, borrowed and refilled, a warrior in the war against the single use water bottle, and she's clearly speaking from the heart. Pat Kane is a lady on the move. Since her founding of Reuzi in 2018, Pat has been on a serious mission to make us all reconsider our waste and reduce our planetary impact. So it was a delight to walk with her through the aisles of the Hopsack and talk through the fundamentals of sustainable shopping, and running a sustainble business - then we decamped to our bat cave to highlight some of her top picks for health, for home and we found just how broad this topic of ecologocial awareness really is, how it touches every aspect of our lives and how we can shift our attitude to become empowered consumers, to bring about the change we want to see in the world every time we open our wallet. “If the internet was based on a kind of commons, an almost scholarly freedom, then we need to pressure the people who are regulating the virtuality of our digital lives and say we need an early internet-like space and zone in this, where people can, for example, test out realities, test out new kinds of economy, prototype things, take those prototypes into reality, see if they work, take them into the virtual world again.”“I think the destruction of the biosphere is baked in and therefore the social disruption is baked in as well. So we need some kind of continuity of civic space on the virtual realm that is potentially before us. We need a civic stake in the specific continuity between being in the streets and protesting and literally having to quarantine because of the next biospheric disruption.”Imagine is a world beyond our wildest dreams...“A life beyond your wildest dreams” is promised to those entering Narcotics Anonymous, a decentralised, collectively-run program for sobriety in which fellow addicts help one another get and stay clean. The promise doesn't make sense when you first hear it—it's only after months, even years, of becoming someone different that you realise how limited your imagination was made by addiction. I think of our global relationship to capitalism very similarly. It's difficult to imagine life without it, and thus a better world, but that doesn't mean such a world isn't possible. So how do we unleash our imaginations and creativity to create a culture and a world beyond our wildest dreams, one in which we look after one another and the more-than-human world? How do we code for care? This is what Pat Kane joins me to discuss. Pat is a writer and musician, an activist, and a futurist. He writes a column for The National in Scotland and is also the co-founder of The Alternative, a media organisation embedded into community resilience and imagining alternative ways of organising. Pat to join me to discuss culture—how to understand it, how to code it, how to change it. We explore the possibility of the internet as emergent collective consciousness and a tool for creativity, resilience and connection. We discuss the importance of play: the psychology of play, the impact of play, and how play as resistance reveals the absurdity of the human systems that we are forced to interact with. We meander through this and more on love, truth, cosmology, resilience, difficulty and imagination. © Rachel DonaldPlanet: Critical investigates why the world is in crisis—and what to do about it. It's Episode 288 of 2 Guys and a Goalie presented by Coolbet Canada with Dustin Nielson, Matt Kassian and Joaquin Gage! The boys begin the episode with some fun and laughs discussing Gager dust up with Stauffer on the Sportsnet Panel earlier this week. Gage also looks like he's doing the podcast from the North Pole today. The guys discuss if players actually just go through the motions waiting for a move prior to the deadline and how if a team did it wouldn't or shouldn't be the Oilers right now. Does it make sense for the Oilers to be in on Pat Kane, the answers from the 2 Guys crew is unanimous. Would a defensive d-man and bottom six forward make the deadline a win for Holland? The guys also breakdown the ESPN top ten centers list and Nielson can't understand how Matthews is ahead of MacKinnon and how he certainly shouldn't be ahead of Draisaitl either.

The Co-Lead in Bounce Beyond, a social enterprise network doing transformative work to cohere and connect the next global economies, Indra is also the author of the fascinating book, The Politics of Waking Up: Power & Possibility In The Fractal Age. She has consulted to the World Economic Forum, NATO and a variety of governments, and she runs community collaboratories around the UK, building Citizen Action Networks (CANs) to reconnect people to cosmo-local eco-systems of solutions that are available. Central to her vision of an Alternative politics is the interdependency of the complex individual, the community and the planet: I, We, World - which is just one of the many themes we'll be exploring in our conversation today. Recorded on 13th April 2022.
