The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this episode, I chat with Jonathan Alsheimer, the unorthodox, energetic, and entertaining middle school teacher who refuses to live a life of limitations and works with UFC Fighters, Celebrities, and Clothing Brands and he is the author of "Next Level Teaching”. Jonathan, taught at the world-renowned Fred Lynn Middle School, which was featured in two documentaries "Relentless" and "Relentless: Chasing Accreditation.” He has been featured as the teacher who forged a partnership with UFC Fighter and light-weight contender Paul Felder to bring a message of never giving up, fighting for their education, and empowering the students to believe in themselves, all principles that Jonathan promotes in his classroom. As Jonathan always says, "Game-changing is not a cliche motto; it is a way of life... some talk about it while others live by it! During our conversation, Jonathan pushed back on what it means to be an effective teacher. He points out that so many teachers have been conditioned to teach to the test or focus on test scores that they have forgotten how to make teaching and learning fun. He shared that when he shifted his focus to students being engaged in authentic and relevant learning experiences that his scores not only improved but so did the students in his classroom. Jonathan suggests that teachers not overwhelm themselves by trying to revolutionize everything but by making steady, small shifts to take elements to the next level. That's how he turned a geography assignment into a zombie apocalypse survival game. Ready to hear some more about these game-changing ideas so you can start living them? Let's go. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecounternarrative/support

However, we often overlook professional learning specifically for leaders designed to help them be…BETTER LEADERS. This is what we do at Road to Awesome. About Jonathan Alsheimer Jonathan Alsheimer is the unorthodox, energetic, and entertaining middle school teacher who refuses to live a life of limitations. Jonathan is often referred to as "my favorite teacher" by his students, and he's the author of NEXT LEVEL TEACHING. As a passionate educator and National Keynote Speaker, Jonathan Alsheimer presents about limitless possibilities for teachers and the impact of an infectious classroom and school culture. NEXT LEVEL TEACHING is about every teacher bringing their unique flair to better their school every single day, always reaching for the NEXT LEVEL. Jonathan, taught at the world-renowned Fred Lynn Middle School, which was featured in two documentaries "Relentless" and "Relentless: Chasing Accreditation." He has been featured as the teacher who forged a partnership with UFC Fighter and light-weight contender Paul Felder to bring the message that students should never give up, fighting for their education, and empowering them to believe in themselves, all principles that Jonathan promotes in his classroom. As Jonathan always says, "Game-changing is not a cliche motto; it is a way of life...some talk about it while others live by it!” What You'll Find in this Podcast Episode with Jonathan Alsheimer Jonathan starts out of the gate on fire! His energy is almost a superpower. Listen to him dispel the misunderstanding about what it means to be a “next level teacher.” It's not about perfection. Jonathan opened up about the stress that teachers feel and what school leaders can do about it. These are things leaders can do right away. When asked about protecting teachers from minutiae, Alsheimer talked about meaningless meetings that “kill the heart of the staff.” Don't miss what Jonathan says about teachers' time and what it takes to plan an awesome lesson. Jonathan talks about working together so that we don't all have to work harder. Let's pool our resources and share more. Think about what this would mean for new teachers! Jonathan gives administrators advice: Develop “lesson plans” for staff meetings. Reflect on the agenda items--are they critical? Does the meeting focus on learning, teacher development, and relationships? Jonathan throws out a number of ideas to gamify the classroom and make it more fun for students. How can you use this in your classroom? Alsheimer mentions Dave Burgess (@burgessdave), Jimmy Casas (@casas_jimmy), Hamish Brewer (@brewerhm). Bottom line, go on Twitter. Teachers and leaders should see us smiling and having fun. If we want kids to be motivated to learn, we have to be motivated to teach and lead. You have to hear what Jonathan says about turning a worksheet into an activity. He literally cut it up and put it into paper bags to make it more fun and exciting for kids. Oh, Boy! Wait till you hear what he says about diving with sharks and our response as Delaware beach-goers. Jonathan talks about being tough on himself in a competitive way to get 1% better each day. He reflects on his “why” often, and that reflection makes a difference for his growth and perseverance. He thinks about what kids deserve, including his own, and that fuels his drive each day. He used to think that test grades matter; now he thinks that growth is the bigger deal. Hello everyone! Today, I am continuing my talk with Jonathan Alsheimer, and his view on what NEXT LEVEL TEACHING is all about. This episode is filled with ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and stories that are guaranteed to get you fired up to do the work you do, and to reach to new levels in your classroom. Jonathan is hands down one of the educators to pay attention to in 2020 (and beyond). He is the unorthodox, energetic, and entertaining middle school teacher who refuses to live a life of limitations and works with UFC Fighters, Celebrities, and Clothing Brands. Jonathan is the author of “NEXT LEVEL TEACHING” soon to be released. You might also know Jonathan through his work and connection with the fantastic Hamish Brewer, and Fred Lynn Middle School. This episode is sponsored by Heinemann—the leading publisher of professional books and resources for educators—and their professional book, Being the Change: Lessons and Strategies to Teach Social Comprehension by Sara K. Ahmed. Topics such as race, gender, politics, religion, and sexuality are part of students’ lives, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to respond as teachers when these subjects come up at school. You probably have stories of your own about situations or conversations that caught you off guard or made you feel uncomfortable. Being the Change is based on the idea that people can develop skills and habits to help them in the comprehension of social issues. Sara provides clear lessons to help teach about important social comprehension concepts. You can create a socially minded classroom where you explore identity and diversity, build listening skills, understand and address bias, become better informed, and more… first with yourself and your peers, and then with students. Being the Change is available as a book, ebook, and audiobook. To learn more visit Heinemann.com.

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I welcome the newest member of Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies, Katie Welker! Katie is joining the team as our newest financial planner that has a specialty in taxes. Website info: https://www.irvineadvise.com/kates-bio/ (https://www.irvineadvise.com/kates-bio/) The Wine: Bully Hill - Merlot - Blackberry aromas and plum flavors rest on a medium bodied frame of cedar and firm tannins. https://www.bullyhillvineyards.com/wine/3/love-my-goat-2/ (https://www.bullyhillvineyards.com/wine/3/love-my-goat-2/) About Kate Kate@irvineadvise.com (mailto:Kate@irvineadvise.com) 607-438-3204 Puzzles always intrigued me. Crosswords, logic puzzles, whatever the sort of puzzle I love taking little pieces of information and putting them together to solve a problem. I was a student at Alfred State College majoring in Humanities and planning on transferring to a law program when a mentor suggested I go talk to someone in the business department about the financial planning program. When I learned what financial planning was I knew it was the right choice for me. I obtained my first job in the financial services industry in 2005 with a large insurance company. The position involved heavy sales and little planning. I quickly learned what type of financial advisor I was not meant to be and left to join a financial planning firm working under a CFP. I enjoyed working with clients, doing supervisory work, and creating financial plans. In 2009 I transitioned to focusing on income tax planning and preparation. I had interned at Alsheimer & Evarts Tax Accounting in college and fell in love with taxes and planning. Since that time I had always worked doing income tax preparation during the tax season, but transitioned to a full time career at Alsheimer & Evarts. I continue to hold this position and love meeting new clients, developing relationships that stretch over years, and facing a new situation every day. I missed being able to handle the investment piece for clients and I was able to become an independent registered representative in 2011. I ran my own small financial business alongside my position at Alsheimer & Evarts. My goal in financial planning had been to transition to fee only and I was researching how to transition my business and what direction to take. I had met Amy Irvine in college and considered her a dear friend and mentor, I had been thinking of reaching out to her when I ran into her at a football game. We began a conversation and in 2018 I joined Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies. My husband Paul and I have two children who keep us very entertained. I am a youth leader at Alfred Almond Bible Church, a Cub Scout den leader, and assist my husband in managing the Hornell Dodgers as part of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Wine Recommendation - Salmon Run Chardonnay Riesling -- Medium intensity with fresh fruit dominant characters of sweet citrus, honeydew melon, subtle violet and bright pineapple notes. The blend’s aim is to preserve the fruity characters and richness from Chardonnay, with the refreshing citrus and crisp acidity from Riesling. http://www.drfrankwines.com/wine-detail.asp?WineType=2&Wine=33 (http://www.drfrankwines.com/wine-detail.asp?WineType=2&Wine=33) Amy Irvine of Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies, LLC 10 East Market Street Corning NY 14830 www.irvineadvise.com (http://www.irvineadvise.com) email: amy@irvineadvise.com
