Gap Year For Grown-Ups
Winifred White Neisser on Ambition, Embracing 70, and What Comes Next

Today, Debbie speaks to Winifred White Neisser, a classmate from the Harvard/Radcliffe Class of 1974. Winifred looks back on her career as a television executive in the all-male, all-white Hollywood entertainment industry and talks about what comes next.  Both Debbie and Winifred are looking forward to celebrating their 50th Harvard reunion next year.Wini, as her friends call her, is very modest. She doesn't think of herself as a [b]old woman. So it took Debbie a while to get her to talk about her success as an entertainment executive. She capped her 34-year career as Senior VP of Sony Pictures for Television Movies and Miniseries. Her award-winning projects include the movie A Raisin in the Sun for ABC and Call me Claus, a Christmas movie which starred Whoopi Goldberg. It's her Midwestern upbringing, Wini told Debbie. They don't brag or show off in Milwaukee, WI where she grew up. She was never propelled by ambition, she told Debbie. Nor did she plan out next steps as she rose to her position as a top exec. But it wouldn't be accurate to say that her career “just happened.”//////////Don't miss the accompanying essays for the podcast in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter on Substack. You can subscribe free.//////////This interview is a story of quiet capability and determination - and underneath, a fierce drive. Debbie was fascinated by her classmate's story because, with one exception, it's so different from hers. Debbie married at the absurdly young age of 21 (she was a junior at Harvard). She had her first baby at 25 and two more by age 31. Wini married much later and had her two children in her mid 30s, all the while climbing the TV executive ladder, first at NBC and later at Sony.In contrast, Debbie's early motherhood derailed her career in journalism. She was married to a busy young doctor so someone had to hold down the fort at home. She stepped willingly into that role, but felt a good deal of frustration trying to work part-time as a freelance journalist. Underneath, she had the same fierce drive that Wini had. She just couldn't express it, career-wise, until some years later. As the conversation continued, Debbie realized that fierce drive and determination sum up the common thread she shares with her female classmates from the Harvard/Radcliffe Class of 1974. There were only 300 women (Cliffies, as they were called) in a class of 1,500 students. So they were vastly outnumbered. They were polite about it, but they were all determined to be successful in their chosen fields — both in Harvard's male-dominated classrooms and later in the world of work. So much has changed for women in the past 50 years so this conversation with Wini is the first of several Debbie is planning with these [b]old women, her 1974 Radcliffe classmates. Note: it's a bit confusing to explain but Radcliffe was the name of the women's college that was part of Harvard in the 1970s and earlier, so technically the women attended Harvard/Radcliffe. Radcliffe has now been subsumed by Harvard. And the ratio of women to men in a Harvard class is now 50-50. So much has changed in 50 years.Hope you enjoy this compelling conversation with a 70-year-old (b)old woman. Mentioned in this episode or useful:Lesley UniversityInterview with Winifred White Neisser in The Historymakers (Nov. 17, 2013)From Season 4, an interview with another accomplished woman of the Harvard/Radcliffe Class of 1974: A'lelia Bundles on Legacy, Leadership, and Growing Bolder at 70Angel City Chorale (Winifred is now the Executive Director)Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative Connect with Debbie:debbieweil.com[B]OLD AGE podcast[B]OLD AGE newsletter on SubstackEmail: thebolderpodcast@gmail.comDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After SixtyFacebook: @debbieweilInstagram: @debbieweilLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/debbieweil Our Media Partners:CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org)MEA and with thanks to Chip ConleyNext For Me (former media partner and in memory of Jeff Tidwell) How to Support this podcast:Leave a review on Apple PodcastsSubscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Far Out MediaMusic: Lakeside Path by Duck Lake

It is a pleasure to welcome Angel City Chorale's Artistic Director and Conductor, Sue Fink, to Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. In 1993, Sue brought together 18 singers at McCabe's Guitar Shop to form the Angel City Chorale. Now in its 30th year among the premier choral groups in Southern California, Angel City Chorale is proud to represent the spirit and diversity of Los Angeles in its membership, music, and outreach activities, thereby fulfilling its mission to "Build Community One Song at a Time." With over 180 talented and dedicated singers, the Angel City Chorale presents a broad and eclectic repertoire that includes classical, gospel, jazz, pop, and world music. In 2018, Sue Fink led the Angel City Chorale as they competed in the long-running NBC talent competition America's Got Talent. They received the Golden Buzzer from guest judge Olivia Munn for their rendition of "Baba Yetu." Series creator and judge Simon Cowell praised them as "one of the best choirs we've ever had." The choir touched nearly 20 million viewers with its rich sound and compelling message of unity and diversity. The video of Angel City Chorale's cover of Toto's "Africa" has been viewed more than 80 million times by people worldwide. The choir has performed at various venues, including Carnegie Hall, London's Cadogan Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and South Africa's Cape Town International Convention Centre. They also recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and shared stages with Burt Bacharach, Dianne Reeves, Jeff Goldblum, Teri Hatcher, and Michael Buble. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Sue Fink previewed 30 Rocks and shared a behind-the-scenes story regarding their AGT experience.

Now that we've been doing this podcast for a year and a half (!), we figured it was time for a re-introduction. Anna and April talk about what we do on this podcast–we break down the bad theology we learned in our evangelical adolescences, and share our journeys of learning new ways to look at biblical texts, sexual ethics, systems of power, and more. We also interview all kinds of wonderful people–mostly LGBTQ+ folks and/or people who have left toxic religious environments, but we're always excited about featuring any voice who has something to say about religious or spiritual identity. We also give some recommendations of where you should start listening–if you want to hear personal stories, check out “Let's Talk About Purity Culture.” If you want to dig deep into theology, try out one of our Bible Dyke Deep Dives. And honestly, all our guests are phenomenal, but our first two interviews (Amy Kósa and Alicia Crosby, respectively) will always be close to our hearts. Here are some updated bios as well: April Little (she/her) is a queer Christian and ex-evangelical who is studying for her Master's degree in Theology and Culture: Community Development at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. She is passionate about LGBTQ+ inclusion and liberation in the church and any other religious/spiritual spaces. She is in the process of writing a memoir about healing from the religious trauma of growing up in an evangelical church that led her to repress her sexuality. She believes that vulnerable storytelling is the foundation for creating change in the world, and she loves facilitating spaces for people to share their stories. She wants to help create a world where all LGBTQ+ folks, particularly youth, know that they are beloved by God, and can experience love among thriving communities (whether they are communities of faith or not). April is also a big nerd when it comes to musicals, the French language, and the Bible. Anna Dawahare (she/they) is a student, creative, and nerd living in beautiful Southern California. She is currently attending Fordham University (online, because that'd be a long commute) and is part-way through getting her Masters in Social Work. Upon graduating, Anna wants to practice with LGBTQ+ youth and those harmed by religious trauma, as well as obtain her license to private practice. They love being able to share the stories of their friends on Reclaiming the Garden as well as researching the variety of topics brought up (Anna is a sucker for a good research product because, as mentioned above, she is a nerd). Their life purpose is to be the snarky, genderqueer older sibling they needed when they were younger. When she isn't studying, working at her internship, or podcasting, Anna sings with Angel City Chorale, volunteers with Q Christian Fellowship, and drinks copious amounts of tea. The way to her heart is a nice jasmine green tea. Anna aspires to be Uncle Iroh- as we all should. We have merch! Get your Bible Dyke Energy Tee or mug here: https://reclaiming-the-garden.creator-spring.com/ Our social media: @reclaimingthegarden on Insta, @RtGardenPodcast on Twitter, and Reclaiming the Garden on Facebook. Our personal accounts: @thatpunchabletheaternerd, @April_TheWriter (April is on Twitter and Insta). Also, our podcast account follows a bunch of awesome folks + podcasts in the exvangelical/deconstruction world and progressive Christian world, so if you're looking for more resources, that's a great place to start!
