The Worthy boys are begging for FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD! as we're celebrating the wacky west-end world of Oliver! directed by Carol Reed based on the book Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Oliver! was the last British film to win Best Picture until Chariots of Fire in 1981, and the last musical to win until Chicago in 2002. It's hard not to laugh when discussing the wacky plot of Oliver! as we argue that Oliver might not even be the lead in the film named after him. We discuss the musical as well as the latest 4K restoration done by Columbia Pictures and the difference in experience a viewer has depending on the specific version of a film they watch. The 41st Academy Awards were also the first Oscars to be staged at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles, and the first with no host since the 11th Academy Awards! Is Oliver! worthy of the Best Picture award of 1968? Tell us how we're wrong at worthysubmissions@gmail.com
Tierra Legacy is run by band leader David Salas who's father (Rudy Salas) and uncle (Steve Salas) founded it's predecessor band, Tierra, in the early 70's. Rudy and Steve passed due to Covid in 2021 and 2022, respectively, and the Salas family decided to continue their incredible music legacy. Tierra's long and storied career spans generations and includes chart topping national and international hits. The band was named “Best R&B Vocal Group” by four leading magazines including Billboard in the early 1980's. They started their career in East Los Angeles with a blend of rock, pop, jazz, R&B and salsa. The result was an infectious Latin/ R&B rhythm that produced classic songs like “Together”, “Gonna Find Her”, “Memories”, “Hidden Tears” and “Zoot Suit Boogie”. Tierra was the first Latino band to have four songs on national charts and two simultaneously in the Top 100. They have performed in such prestigious shows such as Carnegie Hall, The American Music Awards, American Bandstand, and The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Tierra is survived by The Tierra Legacy which consists of new, original and former Tierra members and the Salas family. The Tierra Legacy lives on in the hearts, minds and blood of this dynamic and unforgettable band.

Dan and I discuss Linda Ronstadt's new Memoir Feels Like Home: A Song For The Sonoran Borderlands as well as the companion CD from Putumayo Records: Feels Like Home: Songs from the Sonoran Borderlands—Linda Ronstadt's Musical Odyssey. In Feels Like Home, Grammy award-winning singer Linda Ronstadt effortlessly evokes the magical panorama of the Sonoran borderlands, a landscape etched by sunlight and carved by wind, offering a personal tour of the place where she came of age, built around meals and memories. Following her best-selling musical memoir, Simple Dreams, this book seamlessly braids together Ronstadt's recollections of people and their passions in a region little understood in the rest of the United States. The granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, Ronstadt celebrates the marvelous flavors and indomitable people on both sides of the border in this road trip through the high desert. Written in collaboration with Lawrence Downes and illustrated throughout with stunning photographs by Bill Steen, Feels Like Home features 20 recipes for traditional Sonoran dishes and a bevy of revelations for Ronstadt's admirers, including never-before-seen family photos. If this book were a radio signal, you might first pick it up on an Arizona highway, well south of Phoenix, coming into the glow of Ronstadt's hometown of Tucson. It would be playing the old canciones, from a time when the border was a place not of peril but of possibility.Putumayo has released Feels Like Home: Songs from the Sonoran Borderlands—Linda Ronstadt's Musical Odyssey, a musical accompaniment to the acclaimed singer's new book, Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands, published by Heyday Books. The musical collection was co-curated by Ronstadt and Putumayo founder Dan Storper and includes influential songs from her childhood and career, as well as several of her own interpretations of classic Mexican songs. Participating artists include legends and musical explorers Lalo Guerrero, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Taj Mahal and David Hidalgo. It was 60 seconds that changed Sacheen Littlefeather's life. On March 27, 1973, the 26-year-old Apache/Yaqui woman walked onto a stage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles and into the international spotlight. The young woman dressed in a Northern buckskin dress rejected the Academy Award to Marlon Brando for The Godfather. The actress and activist calmly explained to 85 million people that it was due to "the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry." Fifty years later and the Academy has apologized. In this exclusive conversation with Unreserved host Rosanna Deerchild, Littlefeather recalls that famous moment, what led up to it, the fallout and what it all meant for the American Indian Movement and Indigenous people across Turtle Island in the five decades since.

Synopsis In 1952, the West Point Military Band celebrated that famous military academy's Sesquicentennial by asking prominent composers to write celebratory works to mark the occasion. Among those who responded was the American composer Morton Gould, whose “West Point Symphony” received its premiere performance on today's date in 1952, at a gala concert featuring the West Point Academy. There are two movements in Gould's “West Point Symphony.” They are titled “Epitaphs” and “Marches,” and the composer himself provided these descriptive comments: “The first movement is lyrical and dramatic… The general character is elegiac. The second and final movement is lusty… the texture a stylization of marching tunes and parades cast in an array of embellishments and rhythmic variations… At one point,” concludes Gould, “there is a simulation of a Fife and Drum Corp, which, incidentally, was the instrumentation of the original West Point Band.” Of all the pieces written in honor of West Point's Sesquicentennial in 1952, Gould's Symphony is probably the best-known. The score of the West Point Symphony calls for a “marching machine,” but on this classic 1959 recording under the late Frederick Fennell, the required sound was provided by the very real marching feet of 120 Eastman School of Music students.

In this Behind the Curtain conversation, musicologist Dr. Kristi Brown Montesano and Dr. Arianne Helou, a dramaturg and French studies scholar, discuss "Oedipus Rex," composed by Igor Stravinsky to a libretto by Jean Cocteau based on the ancient Greek tragedy of the same name by Sophocles. The 1927 opera is a highly stylized, ritualistic work set in the time of plague. On Sunday, June 6, 2021, LA Opera will present "Oedipus Rex" at our home in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. With a limited audience and safety protocols observed, it will be our first public, indoor performance since March 2020. Richard Seaver Music Director James Conlon conducts a stellar cast led by tenor Russell Thomas, LA Opera's Artist in Residence, as Oedipus, the doomed king. Mezzo-soprano J'Nai Bridges returns as Jocasta, his queen (and mother). Legendary actor Stephen Fry will make his LA Opera debut (via audio recording) as the Narrator in this equally-legendary tale. The 2020 election cycle has been wracked with scandal, accusations of fraud, and uncertainty. Fearing the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Americans voted by mail, and have little idea what in-person polling looked like in this historic year. Join us this week as Stan sits down with Back in America’s new Podcast Editor and poll worker Josh Wagner. A native Los Angeleno, Josh worked the polls in Downtown Los Angeles at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, site of the Los Angeles Opera. Amid a startling amalgamation of modernist and abstracted artworks, voters took to the polls, casting their ballots in the decisive 2020 presidential election. To make sense of the opulence of the polling station alongside the monotony of the democratic process (not to mention the scores of unhoused people living just blocks away), Josh spoke with several of his fellow poll workers––comic Chistine Medrano, high schooler Emilee Salas, and assistant lead Harrell Greene––as well as several voters. How were poll workers kept safe? Who voted at The Music Center? Listen to find out what it was really like to vote in the 2020 election downtown! You can find Josh’s published works here and make sure to look out for future episodes with him.

www.latheatrebites.com Synopsis: Following the lives of four young bohemians as they fight, fantasize and fall in (and out) of love in the face of poverty, La Boheme is widely regarded as one of Puccini's greatest works, spawning myriad adaptations, even becoming the basis for hit musical RENT. Although the struggle and strife (and excitement) of 1840's Paris may seem worlds away to us now, the themes have remained timeless and universal. Taken from the website www.laopera.org/
