Satan disguises himself as an angel of light to deceive the saints of God. The Apostle Paul wrote this pivotal truth to the Corinthian Church warning them to be careful and prayerful in Christ Jesus the Lord. From the beginning the Devil has been deceiving people directly and now indirectly through his agents who come to us in the garb of “ministers of righteousness!” We must know our Saviour Lord Jesus Christ so well that we would not be deceived by anyone and we should be rooted so deep in the Holy Scriptures that no one can uproot us by their false teaching or false revelations! We must be walking so close to the Holy Spirit that He would constantly prompt us of all evil and dangers lurking around us. That is a blessed life and needed for us in this hour. The evil one hates you with a profound hate. And the closer you draw to God, fulfilling His Divine Will, the more he will seek to attack you. Do not fear the bark of this little dog. One of the most common ways the evil one attempts to deceive you is by presenting himself as an angel of light. He does this by using his natural angelic powers of influence, speaking lies that have a faint resemblance to the truth. He rarely speaks outright with obvious lies since he knows we would immediately identify him as the source. Instead, he seeks to manipulate the truth and lead you into confusion, tempting you to doubt the truths that God has spoken and to doubt the holy Will of God. He may subtly remind you of your past sins and weaknesses while trying to mask the infinite Mercy of God which eliminates those sins and manifests its power through your weakness. He may tempt you to discouragement and despair, removing from your heart the hope you have been given in Christ Jesus. He may tempt you to anger and resentment leading you to believe that you are justified in holding on to these feelings. Whatever the case may be, the evil one is a slippery liar and you must overcome his deceit by turning constantly to the truth of the Mercy of God (See Diary #1405).Reflect upon the subtle lies that you have allowed yourself to believe. Whatever they are, you will know them by their fruits: sadness, anger, hurt, confusion and the like. Identify these and dismiss them through prayer. Allow the Mercy of the Lord's Truth to permeate your soul and set you free.Lord, help me to know the truth and to be set free through this knowledge. Please protect me from the subtle lies and deceptions of the evil one. I rebuke him in Your holy Name and entrust myself to Your protecting Hand. Jesus, I trust in You. Their intent is to get, take, and mislead us. These are (like Satan) leeches…deceitful, spiritual vampires, sucking the life and resources out of us. We live in a time where demonic delusion is at its peak. These delusions come in the form of thoughts, feelings, dreams and visions. The Holy Apostles and Fathers of the Orthodox Church provide insight into these delusions. Saint Paul in particular warns against the “angel of light,” referring not only to false visions of angels, but to anything the demons present as good or spiritual.Using examples from the lives of saints, Father Kosmas explains how the saints exposed the tricks that the devil and his demons use to delude not only monastics, but all Orthodox Christians, and how those deluded are the self-confident, the vainglorious and the proud. He also points out that it is not enough merely to read the lives of the saints and the teachings of the Holy Fathers: it is absolutely necessary that we acquire discernment by living those teachings.The following questions are also discussed: do parish priests deserve criticism for avoiding the topic of demonic deception? What happened to an archimandrite who denied the existence of demons? Why was Rasputin viewed by some as a man of God, but by others as a deceiver? Does involvement in the occult leave a person scarred and vulnerable to the demons even after repentance? What is meant by a balanced spiritual diet? Why do the evil spirits continually suggest negative thoughts about one's spiritual father? The evil one hates you with a profound hate. And the closer you draw to God, fulfilling His Divine Will, the more he will seek to attack you. Do not fear the bark of this little dog. One of the most common ways the evil one attempts to deceive you is by presenting himself as an angel of light. He does this by using his natural angelic powers of influence, speaking lies that have a faint resemblance to the truth. He rarely speaks outright with obvious lies since he knows we would immediately identify him as the source. Instead, he seeks to manipulate the truth and lead you into confusion, tempting you to doubt the truths that God has spoken and to doubt the holy Will of God. He may subtly remind you of your past sins and weaknesses while trying to mask the infinite Mercy of God which eliminates those sins and manifests its power through your weakness. He may tempt you to discouragement and despair, removing from your heart the hope you have been given in Christ Jesus. He may tempt you to anger and resentment leading you to believe that you are justified in holding on to these feelings. Whatever the case may be, the evil one is a slippery liar and you must overcome his deceit by turning constantly to the truth of the Mercy of God (See Diary #1405).Reflect upon the subtle lies that you have allowed yourself to believe. Whatever they are, you will know them by their fruits: sadness, anger, hurt, confusion and the like. Identify these and dismiss them through prayer. Allow the Mercy of the Lord's Truth to permeate your soul and set you free.Lord, help me to know the truth and to be set free through this knowledge. Please protect me from the subtle lies and deceptions of the evil one. I rebuke him in Your holy Name and entrust myself to Your protecting Hand. When Gary was growing up the Happy Days sitcom brought many of the 50's songs back to life. He fesses up to listening to his parent's old records and pretending to be Elvis Presley while singing The Devil in Disguise. While you may not know this, the title, at least, has a biblical connection. In Second Corinthians 11:14, Paul warns the church that not everything that looks good is good. The devil is a master at making good look bad and bad look good. "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."
