In celebration of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, we wanted to share our review one of the comic book runs featuring the comic adventuring team that the movie trilogy is based on. Writers Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett were instrumental in reigniting Marvel's Cosmic Universe with Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. After this in-universe cross over event they took some of the surviving characters and reintroduced them as a team in their own title Guardians of the Galaxy in 2008. This group features Star-Lord, Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Mantis, Drax the Destroyer and Adam Warlock along with other heroes from Marvel's cosmic backlog. We follow this cast of cosmic adventurers as they attempt to save time and space from the cataclysmic Faults that have the potential to destroy the universe as they know it and then some. They also persevere through another 2 Marvel events along with other villains that continue to test the unity of this interesting cast of cosmic heroes. The primary artist on the series, Paul Pelletier helps establish this new modern vision of the team that has ties to its 1969 version of the lineup, while creating a welcoming introduction to new comic book readers. If you like James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movie trilogy and looking for a jumping on point we recommend checking out the Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning Omnibus to follow along in their adventures while discovering what inspired the live action adaption.

This week we read the 2007 comic series Annihilation Conquest. Join us as we discuss Adam Warlock, Quasar, Moon Dragon and more as they attempt to defeat Ultron and his horde of technological warriors. New episodes every Monday.
We talk about Guardians of the Galaxy and the things you missed if you never read the comics. Learn about Starlord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax, Ronan, Yondu, and more! Talk with us on Twitter. Links from the discussion… Peter Quill was an orphan that wanted to be an astronaut before he stole a Kree ship from NASA and fled Earth. Gamora is fairly consistent with the movie except it isn't clear if her body is mechanically improved. Nebula in the MCU looks very much like she does in the comics. I am Groot. Rocket is a genetically and cybernetically enhanced raccoon with a very convoluted origin story. A comic issue where Drax battles Hulk and plays a saxophone. Yondu's "whistle arrow" is not in the comics. He was in the original Guardians of the Galaxy. The Nova Corps are Xandar's space force and explorers. Nova was a Nova Prime like Glenn Close in this movie. The Collector once kidnapped Howard the Duck who escaped with the help of escapee Rocket Raccoon and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The original Guardians of the Galaxy and the new Guardians of the Galaxy. The Annihilation: Conquest comic series pits Ronan the Accuser against many of the heroes in this movie.
The ANNIHILATION SAGA rages on! Though the war with the bugs has been fought and won, the war with the machines has just begun. Actually, that's a shorter war than the last one, and today's episode will bring us to the end of it. We are talking the second half of "Annihilation Conquest." That means discussion on "Nova" #4-12 and Annual #1, "Wraith" #1-4, and "Annihilation: Conquest" #1-6. But this is the far off galaxy in a Marvel book! This war may be wrapping up soon, but the next space war is right around the corner.Next time, peace! Sort of. We'll be reading the first six issues of "Guardians of the Galaxy" by Abnett and Lanning, and "Nova" #13-22, also by Abnett and Lanning. As far as reading orders go, it doesn't get more straightforward than this. Seriously, keep an eye on this space, reading orders are going to get complicated. But for now, enjoy the origins of everyone's favorite superhero team that features a tree and a raccoon.
Our coverage of the massive, mammoth ANNIHILATION SAGA continues. We're four episodes in, and the end is nowhere in sight! We've left the Annihilation War behind us. The bugs are gone. Kree space is pretty swiss cheesed and it's time for some well earned R&R...or at least it would be if the universe weren't instantly threatened by ANOTHER force in the pages of "Annihilation: Conquest: Prologue." Jake and Elias take a good look at that one-shot and, much like the last Annihilation conflict, dive right into a couple tangential but vital mini-series "Annihilation Conquest: Quasar" #1-4 and "Annihilation: Conquest: Starlord" #1-4. Reading in trade? All are found in the first trade, "Annihilation: Conquest: Book 1."Next time, the conquest comes to an end, but the Saga does not. We'll be reading, in this order, "Nova" #4-7, "Annihilation Conquest: Wraith" #1-4, "Annihilation: Conquest" #1 & 2, "Nova" #8-10, "Nova" Annual #1, "Annihilation: Conquest" #3-5, "Nova" #11-12, "Annihilation: Conquest" #6. If you're reading in trade, "Nova" #4-7, "Conquest" and "Wraith" are all in "Annihilation: Conquest: Book Two" while the other "Nova" issues are found in "Nova" Vol. 2: Knowhere.
Tune in today as we continue our coverage of the ANNIHILATION SAGA. We're three episodes in, and the end is nowhere in sight! It all comes to a head this week as our heroes come together for the first time and battle the Negative Zone hordes in earnest. We are looking at "Annihilation" #1-6, as well as the all the issues from "Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus" and the first three issues of "Nova." After so much preamble, it is fun to finally be reading about wars in the stars. Thanks for listening! The space battles don't stop here though, next time we will continue this epic run with the beginnings of "Annihilation: Conquest." We will be covering the "Annihilation: Conquest Prologue #1" one shot, as well as the miniseries "Annihilation: Conquest: Starlord" #1 – #4, and "Annihilation: Conquest: Quasar" #1 – #4. Those issues can be found in the front half of the big 'ol "Annihilation: Conquest" omnibus or if you prefer trades that weigh less than a medium sized baby, you can get all those issues in the "Annihilation: Conquest Part 1" paperback.

Time to head back to outer space! After the events of Annihilation, Marvel’s reinvigorated galactic universe gets taken over by robots. Sequel time! Annihilation: Conquest brings back Nova, Quasar, Moondragon, Star-Lord and a whole slew of outer space favorites. Rocket and Groot make their modern debuts too. We say modern because Groot’s 1st appearance was back in Tales to Astonish #13 from 1960. But he was a little… different. If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that trees will always be popular in comic books. Next Time: Action Comics #1000, Crisis on Infinite Earths #1, Free Comic Book Day 2018 selections!
