We take a look back at what happened while the heroes were "dead' during Heroes Reborn and we learn a lot of secrets. Characters who have been missing for years turn up and the biggest mystery surrounding Jarvis is finally solved!
Episode 24 - Murdock and Marvel: 1986 Part 2 If you are every arguing with friends about what was the best year in the history of comics, you could do worse than arguing for 1986. With a ton of interesting independent books, vibrant small-press publishers popping up everywhere, and four of the most beloved stories in the history of comics, '86 was definitely a banner year! This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1986. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #226-237, Spectacular Spider-Man #110, Amazing Spider-Man #277, Marvel Age Annual #2, Avengers Annual #15, Marvel Fanfare #27, Elektra: Assassin #1 and 4, Marvel Saga the Official History #13, and Marvel Graphic Novel: Daredevil Love and War Writing credits: Frank Miller and Denny O'Neil (226), Frank Miller (227-233), Mark Gruenwald (234), Danny Fingeroth (235), Ann Nocenti (236), “John Harkness” (237) Pencilers: David Mazzucchelli (226-233), Steve Ditko (234-235), Barry Windsor-Smith (236), Lois Williams (237) Inks: Dennis Janke (226), David Mazzucchelli (227-233), Klaus Jansen (234), Danny Bulanadi (235), Windsor-Smith and Bob Wiacek (236), Al Williamson and Bulandi (237) The year begins Frank Miller returning to the title and a story where Daredevil helps Gladiator save Betsy Beatty after confronting him stealing from a museum Next, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli start an iconic run of books that you've probably heard of “Born Again” that starts with book 227 and finishes with 233. This incredible will be the spotlight for this week. After Born Again, we get four stand-alone stories by four different writers to finish out the year. The first against a weird “hero” named Mad Cap who spouts nonsense and seemly can't be killed. Next Daredevil takes on Mr. Hyde yet again. Then Daredevil and the Black Widow team up to track down another deranged member of the Super Soldier Project. Finally, Daredevil takes on the Klaw who's looking to re-establish himself by taking him down. Issue #237 was initially going to be the start of Steve Engelhart's run on DD, but he was replaced by Ann Nocenti after writing just one issue, which he had his name taken off of, and the pen name “John Harkness” was credited Daredevil: Love and War GN told the story of how the Kingpin kidnapped a psychiatrist's wife to coerce him to help his wife, who was not recovering well from her accident and her captivity in the sewers. By the end of the story we find out Vanessa only wants to escape from Fisk, and he sends her away to Europe with the doctor and his wife so she can heal and start a new life. Elektra: Assassin is completely batshit. Fully painted by Bill S., it is wildly experimental and confusing. Elektra and a cyborg who is obsessed with her try to stop a presidential candidate who looks kind of like Dan Quayle from doing the will of “the beast” and causing a nuclear holocaust. New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #227 February 1986 “Apocalypse” through Daredevil #233 August 1986 “Armageddon” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway It was the Best of Times, but it led to the Worst of Times. Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Rogue is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, commonly in association with the X-Men. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Michael Golden, she first appeared in Avengers Annual #10 (1981). In her comic book appearances, Rogue is depicted as a mutant, a subspecies of humans born with an "X-gene" that grants superhuman abilities. She is capable of absorbing the life force, attributes, memories, and superpowers of anyone through physical touch. Rogue is initially portrayed as a reluctant supervillain, but she soon joins the X-Men as a superhero and has since endured as one of its most prominent members. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message
It's the Avengers teamed with their thinly veiled DC counterparts, the Squadron Supreme! We're finally finishing up the plotline from the main title, as we see the two teams join together to fight the main villain behind this storyline, Imus Champion! Who? Go back and listen to one of our early 70's episodes and you'll hear all about him. But can he take our two teams of two Earth's Mightiest Heroes?

Episode 66 - Captain Marvel - Death and Indignity be Damned This week's topic is the early years of Carol Danvers in the comics as we prepare for a re-watch of 2018's Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson. Unusual for the time. Ends up as a potential love interest of Mar-Vell, much like Lois Lane was to Superman at the time. Ms. Marvel #1 Carol's new look and attitude very much based on Gloria Steinem, who also co-founded Ms. Magazine (featuring Wonder Woman on the first issue). The callback to 1940s Captain Marvel was a nice touch Quickly got her memory issues sorted out. Changed costume in #19. Series ended with #23. Spider-Man and Mary Jane cameos Duane is not a fan of the black-outs and how this story hints at what is obviously going on. Avengers #200 Lots of writers and yet... Super messed up. Very weird and sexist. No idea what the writers were trying to accomplish, but nothing about this story sat right. Almost immediately this story was recognized to be super messed up. Chris Claremont tried to fix things a bit in Avengers Annual #10 by giving Carol a chance to lay into the team Uncanny X-Men #164 The Brood are the worst. Look very much like the alien from Alien or the Gorn on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds New powers are radiation based, and are top-notch. Makes her one of the most powerful people in the Marvel Universe. Had been with the X-Men since Prof X helped her get her memories back Captain Marvel (2012) #1-6 Saved the best for last Standing on the shoulders of two giants - the previous Captain Marvels and earlier female pilots Ultimately Danvers herself gets to decide if she wants to keep the life she has (with powers) or change her fate and go without. DARY FROM THE X-FACTOR FILES IS BACK!!! Sorry, but Jason and John are so excited to bring Daryl back as we look at the first of the 1993 annuals. But he was kind enough to join us to start with the Avengers Annual, where we meet Bloodwraith!
The exciting conclusion to the Evolutionary War! Just kidding. It sucked.

STREEPS OF FIRE: THE RIVER WILD (1994) WITH BLOOD AND POPCORN'S ERIK! Following Streep's break from heavy roles after 1988's A CRY IN THE DARK, 4 out of 5 of Streep's next movies were sharp-ish turns to comedy (SHE-DEVIL, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE & DEATH BECOMES HER), with one prestige drama (THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS) before she decided it was time for becoming an... action hero? We are still in the midst of Streep's most fascinating period (she would next romance Clint Eastwood in the brilliant BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY). Curtis Hanson (director of LA CONFIDENTIAL) was a master of the mid-budget studio thriller at the time of The River Wild. Once Streep was on board with Hanson, a crack cast around her quickly followed (Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, David Strathairn, that one kid from Jurassic Park, a heroic dog, and Benjamin Bratt). It all makes for a relatively satisfying early 90s mid-budget studio thriller about a couple of convicts taking a river guide (Streep) and her family hostage on a river-bound getaway through some gnarly rapids she has a deadly history with. It IS a ridiculous premise but Hanson, to his credit, along with Streep giving more than a script like this deserves, make it work. The River Wild was filmed in a few different location but most of the sedate or passable rapid river scenes were shot in Southern Oregon on the wild and scenic portion of the Rogue River. Co-host Ken and special guest Erik (of the pod Blood and Popcorn) lived in the area at the time and discuss both the river and working at a movie theater when the film was being made AND having most of the stars come through at one point or another. It is always a peculiar thing when Hollywood invades a small town. There is also a quiz about the movie! Usually we do two movies in an episode but we didn't have any Streep-as-action-hero movies to pair this with. We all eagerly await Streep to show up as Commander Azmatron Eleven (first introduced in the classic Kree-Skrull War, Avengers Annual #6 to be exact) in the MCU so she can be in another action movie and we can have a Streep action figure!*THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096*there is no such character and we all pray Streep never steps into a green closet to shoot a cameo in a shitty superhero movie, It would tarnish her crown

Before she was Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was Miss Marvel. We take a look at the entirety of her 1970s run in the Essential Miss Marvel, Volume 1Affiliate link included.Transcriopt below:Graham: Before Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers hits the big screen next year, learn about her heroic origins as we discuss the essential Miss Marvel Volume one straight ahead.[Intro Music] Announcer:Welcome to the Classic Comics podcast where we search for the best Comics in the universe from Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham. Graham: This year actually marks the 50th anniversary of Carol Danvers' first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes #13. She was introduced as the Security Chief of a secret Air Force base; however, she was mostly a supporting character in the story and the future series starring Captain Marvel, i.e, Mar-vell of the Kree. She was a rival for Mar-vell's girlfriend and served to motivate that jealousy. Once that plot was played out, Carol Danvers pretty much disappeared from the comics until the 1970s. The Essential Ms. Marvel Volume 1 collects Ms. Marvel Issues 1 through 23 along with Marvel Super-Heroes Issues 10 and 11 from the 1990s and Avengers Annual number 10. You can also get these stories in full color if you get the Ms. Marvel Masterworks Volume 1 and Volume 2. With the Ms Marvel series, the book actually opens with her being hired by Jameson to edit the magazine “Woman” and at the beginning of the series, Carol is not actually aware that she is changing into Ms. Marvel. I will somewhat revise what I said in the Noble review when I kind of poo-pooed the idea of having a hero with amnesia or in this case memory problems. Here it works because as readers we know what's going on and it doesn't take Carol too long to figure out for herself. It's revealed that in an issue where Captain Marvel rescued her, she was exposed to rays from a Kree device known as the Psyche-Magnetron. The Kree, of course I should note, are an alien species in the Marvel Universe with blue-skinned Kree as well as pink-skinned Kree, who could, and often do pass for white people, at least in the Marvel Universe and so in times of danger Carol changes into Ms Marvel who is a Kree warrior with amazing fighting powers. Now throughout the first dozen issues Carol believes that Carol Danvers and Ms Marvel are two separate people but then she realizes in the issue 12 that that's not the case, that as a result of this ray her mind was filled with the memories and the training of a Kree warrior and she just could not really process that so she created this second identity that she realizes that she's not two different people. She is the same person whether she's Ms Marvel or Carol Danvers. This kind of feels like they divided her personalities at the start of the book which would bear some semblance to what had gone on for a while in the Captain Marvel book with Captain Marvel and Rick Jones trading out existence in this universe but didn't really have an idea how that would work. It's worth noting that Gerry Conway wrote the first 3 issues of the book and then after that Chris Claremont of X-Men fame came aboard and so that may have been the reason for the discrepancy. In terms of notable stories in the book I think issues 12 and 13 are interesting because not only does she have that realisation about her power but we get a little bit of insight into her past and her finding out that her dad is in trouble and trying to help out. Her dad shoos her away as Carol Danvers and when she intervenes as Ms Marvel her dad doesn't even say thank you. He's very condescending to her and just kind of acts like she's just a little girl and really doesn't want to have a relationship with her as an adult and it's something that clearly bothers her. It's a relationship she wants to have and...
