Send Kris and Rob a Text Message! The Deadly Obsession of Christa Pike: The Devil in the DetailsBorn on March 10, 1976, Christa Pike grew up with a difficult family life. Her troubled upbringing involved abuse, neglect, and struggles with mental health—factors that, while tragic, would never justify the choices she made as a young woman. By her late teens, Christa found herself at Job Corps, a program designed to help troubled young adults get back on track by providing them with education and training. Here, she met and quickly fell for 17-year-old Tadaryl Shipp, a charismatic young man who would become more than just a boyfriend. Together, they would ignite a deadly obsession. The Backstory: Love, Obsession, and Dark BeliefsChrista Pike and Tadaryl Shipp's relationship was intense and volatile. They were both drawn to the occult, dabbling in devil worship and dark rituals, something that set them apart and fed their shared intensity. Pike's obsession with Shipp was fierce, almost possessive, and she was jealous of anyone she thought might interfere. | One person, in particular, fueled Christa's jealousy: Colleen Slemmer. Colleen, a fellow Job Corps student, had reportedly irritated Christa with minor slights. Pike became convinced that Colleen was trying to seduce Tadaryl, a suspicion that spiraled quickly in her mind. The Crime: A Night of HorrorOn January 12, 1995, Christa Pike, Tadaryl Shipp, and a mutual friend named Shadolla Peterson lured Colleen Slemmer into a secluded, wooded area on the University of Tennessee's agricultural campus in Knoxville. Colleen thought they were going for a walk, perhaps to resolve whatever tension had built up between them. But what awaited her was no peace talk—it was a nightmare. | For the next thirty minutes, Colleen endured torture at the hands of Christa and Tadaryl. Christa Pike smashed Colleen's skull with a large chunk of asphalt, ultimately killing her. But Pike wasn't finished. As a final, chilling souvenir, she kept a piece of Colleen's skull, carrying it with her as if it were a trophy of her conquest. The Aftermath: An Unraveled CrimeChrista Pike's arrogance proved to be her undoing. Bragging about the murder to friends, she showed off the fragment of Colleen's skull as though it were a badge of honor. News of her boasting quickly spread through the Job Corps community and reached the ears of authorities. Within 36 hours, Christa Pike and Tadaryl Shipp were arrested. | During questioning, Pike showed no remorse, relaying the horrific details of the murder with chilling indifference. The physical evidence against her was overwhelming, including Colleen's blood on her clothes and the skull fragment she had so brazenly kept as a memento. | In 1996, Christa Pike was found guilty of first-degree murder. The court, clearly appalled by the brutality of the crime, sentenced her to death. She was just 20 years old, making her the youngest woman on death row in the United States at the time.sources used for this podcastSupport the showJOIN THE HITCHED 2 HOMICIDE IN-LAWS AND OUTLAWSSTART KRIS CALVERT'S BOOKS TODAY FOR FREEH2H WEBSITEH2H on TWITTERH2H on INSTA

When Rachel Barber failed to return home from dance practice one evening in 1999, her family reported her missing and launched a desperate search. They plastered Melbourne with over 2,000 posters, hoping for any news of her whereabouts. After days of searching, their hopes shattered on day 12 when they learned Rachel had been murdered. Her killer was a 19-year-old former babysitter and family friend who had been consumed by jealousy and obsession with Rachel, stalking her for years. Criminal court reporter Megan Norris co-wrote a book with Rachel's mother, Elizabeth, titled Perfect Victim, detailing the families tragic loss and the details of the case. The fantastically dressed man held his hands up, inviting the audience to cheer even louder. They roared their approval, and the man reveled in it. He turned in place, allowing himself to bask in the noise. When he had his fill, he motioned for the crowd to silence themselves. He waited for the noise to recede, and began to speak. He played to the crowd, speaking promises of action and bloodshed. The crowd reacted to each statement with a cheer. He excitedly proclaimed that the combatants would be fighting for glory, as well as the potential to win the grand prize. He pointed directly toward the large red jewel. He explained that the jewel was straight from the treasures of the King, and would make any fighter wealthy enough to live a life of pleasure. The Heroes knew they needed to make it theirs. While some look for companionship on dating sites, others have turned to self help books, life coaches, and relationship experts to learn how to attract a partner. Working on yourself is a good thing, but some people believe that two of these so-called “experts” are taking advantage of others' loneliness and vulnerability. These self proclaimed gurus guarantee that by joining their group called “Twin Flame Universe”, they can help people grow spiritually and find “the one”. The problem is, some former members claim that the group is actually a dangerous undercover cult, using shady MLM style recruitment and stripping people of their identities, all in the name of love. In today's deep dive with 'Emma Kenny Crime Time,' we venture into a haunting tale of adolescent love turned deadly—the chilling story of Jamie Fuller. This case, which unfolded in the 1990s, stands as a somber testament to how young infatuation can spiral into lethal aggression. At just 16, Jamie Fuller murdered his 14-year-old girlfriend, Amy Carnevale, after she attempted to end their tumultuous relationship. The violent act was shocking, but the events leading up to it revealed a web of teenage angst, possessiveness, and toxic masculinity.

Michael's conversation with David Grann, author of "The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon." Original air date 4 March 2009. The book was published on 24 February 2009
We spoke with David Grann, author of non-fiction page-turners including The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon and Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, to say nothing of his many incredible articles about crime and adventure that he's written over the past twenty years for The New Yorker. And he has a new book, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder. It's about seafaring, nautical battles, castaways on the brink of starvation, but it's also about the very fabric of society. David Grann on the brutal truths revealed in The Wager

While all your favorite retailers are busy hanging their decorations in preparation for the arrival of the big man in the red suit, The Cult Boys are still firmly fixated on frights! This week we pour y'all a little extra scare juice to get over that Halloween hangover in the form of 3 more terrifying tales of terror. Firstly, we end our 80s V-Cinema run with possibly the biggest, baddest entry of all in the form of Gakidama aka Demon Within (1985). Then we pop on the Australian boob tube and check out the made for TV Halloween knockoff, Coda aka Deadly Obsession (1987). Finally, we bring the lunkheaded trash genius, James Bryan back to the show for one of THE dumbest entries in one of the dumbest horror subgenres, the Slasherific backwoods romp, Don't Go in the Woods... Alone! (1981) Feedback: cultofmuscle@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/groups/cultofmuscle Merch: redbubble.com/people/cultofmuscle/shop

Leslie Rule's true crime debut, A Tangled Web, covers a frightening Omaha love triangle murder. "I chose this case because I want to warn readers that the female sadistic sociopath may be the most dangerous killer of all." A veteran author for over three decades, Rule's other works include two suspense novels and five nonfiction books on the paranormal, including Coast to Coast Ghosts—True Stories of Hauntings Across America. Rule was only seventeen when she started attending murder trials with her mother, author Ann Rule. "It was my job to shoot the killers—not with a gun, but with my camera," says Leslie. Many of her courtroom photographs have appeared in her A books. In addition to her bestselling books, Leslie has published dozens of articles in national magazines, including First for Women, Woman's World and Reader's Digest. Leslie became interested in the study of ghosts while growing up in what was known to locals as a "haunted house" located on a Native American burial ground on Puget Sound. She has written five non-fiction books featuring paranormal stories, based on historical research and interviews of people who say they've witnessed ghost sightings. She has also written two novels and a travel book. It was the summer of 2004, and Charlie and Teri Brandt needed to get someplace safe. With Hurricane Ivan headed for their home in Big Pine Key, the couple went to Orlando to stay with their niece, Michelle Jones. Michelle was thrilled to have them, but toward what should have been the end of their visit, she stopped returning phone calls. So did Teri and Charlie. Finally, one of Michelle's friends went to the house to check on everyone. She was horrified by what she discovered. Then Kristin tells us about the evening of February 17, 2007. Melissa Lucio was in a panic. Her two-year-old daughter Mariah had fallen asleep, but wasn't waking up. Paramedics arrived at Lucio's apartment, and attempted to revive the little girl. But she remained unresponsive. As moments ticked by, the paramedics grew more and more concerned. The girl's body was covered in bruises. It looked like she'd been badly beaten. Melissa's other children told the EMT's that Mariah had recently fallen down the stairs, but medical personnel feared something much more sinister had occurred. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The documentary, “State of Texas vs. Melissa” Wrongful Conviction podcast episode, “Melissa Lucio” “Divided Federal Appeals Court Reinstates Death Sentence for Texas Mother of Child Who May Have Died in Accidental Fall,” Death Penalty Information Center “Did Melissa Lucio, the First Hispanic Woman on Death Row in Texas, Kill Her Daughter? The life of Percy Harrison Fawcett was never short of adventure. An amateur explorer who obtained a gold medal for his services to the Royal Geographical Society, in a time long before planes, GPS and radio communication. He was a man with a story and a character so much larger than life, that popular fiction has drawn influence on them for years, from Arthur Conan Doyle's “The Lost World” to the Hollywood archeology of Indiana Jones, even making an appearance in TinTin & The Broken Ear as a blowpipe wielding hermit. For over twenty years his career saw him delve deep into the Amazon, until, in 1925, just months before newspapers printed their headlines that the city of Atlantis had been found, he set off into the forest in search of a lost city he had christened simply “Z”. All of us have rubber-necked at one point or another. Maybe when we pass an ambulance lit up at a residence, or open a clickbait title that's too juicy to pass up. But at what point does this passing interest in tragedy become problematic? Find out the duo’s opinions on those fixated with the macabre.
After a year of pandemic, we're all itching to break from the restrictions of the pandemic. We want to travel and explore. It makes sense; we're hard-wired to explore. Our ancestors would not have survived absent the drive to seek food and safety from the dangers of the day. Safe and satiated, they later sought new lands to conquer and later still, to escape the constraints and cruelties of rapid industrialization. If the recent pandemic left you yearning to explore, you might be inspired by this show we first aired in 2017. What a Creep: Joey Buttafuoco & John Wayne Bobbitt Season 10, Episode 1 90s Tabloid Creeps Joey Buttafuoco The name alone became a punchline—Buttafuoco! In the summer of 1992, America was obsessed with this trashy tale from Long Island about a murderous teenager and her dumb, muscle pants-wearing lover. This scandal had everything, sex, escort services, autobody shops, a Howard Stern interview, and secret videotapes which the tabloid media covered breathlessly for over a year. Native Americans have been getting forced off their land for a long time. Although Thomas Jefferson promised they shall know the United States as only "friends and benefactors," he forced them from their ancestral home in 1804 after he signed the Louisiana Purchase. Assured by the government that Kansas territory would be theirs forever, they were soon forced from their new home by white settlers (including the Wilder family of Little House fame) who plundered their burial sites and squatted on their land until they felt little choice but to sell to them. The Osage finally settled on territory in Oklahoma that most whites found "unfit for cultivation," at least until they found oil underneath those rocks. Then it became attractive to powerful white men who hatched a plot to kill the Osage obtain and obtain mineral rights to the land. This is the chilling story of the systematic murder of one group of native people. It's the bigger story of how the United States government has betrayed and controlled the sovereignty of a nation of people who lived here first. This story never seems to end. In 2019, Attorney General William Barr announced a plan to address the crisis of missing and murdered Native Americans. I wonder whether anything has changed. Last week, I spoke with Leslie Rule, whose new book, A TANGLED WEB: A Cyberstalker, a Deadly Obsession, and the Twisting Path to Justice, chronicles the investigation into the death of Cari Farver in Omaha, Nebraska, and the ensuing first-degree murder prosecution of Shanna Golyar by the Douglas County Attorney’s Office. Sioux City native James […] The post JAMES MASTELLER: Co-Prosecutor in State of Nebraska vs. Shanna Golyar appeared first on KSCJ 1360.
It was a bleak November in 2012 when Cari Lea Farver vanished from Omaha, Nebraska. Cari, thirty-seven, was a devoted mother, reliable employee, and loyal friend—not the type to shirk responsibilities, abandon her son, and run off on an adventure while her dying father took his last breaths. Yet, the many texts from her phone indicated she had done just that.It appeared that Cari had dumped her new boyfriend, quit her job, and relinquished custody of her son to her mother—all by text. While Cari’s boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, and her supervisor were bewildered by her abrupt disappearance, they accepted the texts at face value. Her mother, Nancy Raney, however, was alarmed and reported Cari missing. Police were skeptical of her claims that a cyber impostor had commandeered her daughter’s phone and online identity. While Nancy was afraid for Cari, Dave Kroupa was growing afraid of her, for he believed Cari was stalking him. Never seen or heard, the stalker was aware of his every move and seemed obsessed with his casual girlfriend, Shanna “Liz” Golyar, often calling her “a fat whore” in the twelve thousand emails and texts he received in a disturbing three-year deluge. How did the stalker know Dave’s phone numbers immediately after he changed them, the names of his lady friends, even what he wore as he watched TV? He and Liz reported death threats, vandalism, and burglaries, but the stalker remained at large. The threats were vicious, vile and often obscene, sent mostly via text and always in Cari’s name. There was some truth in the messages, but all of them contained one big lie. "Grann himself inspires a devotion in readers that can border on the obsessive,” writes a Slate journalist describing the work of New Yorker reporter David Grann. We can understand why. Grann’s work is obsessively researched and crafted until he produces journalism so exquisitely wrought that you found yourself obsessively talking about it with anyone who will listen. Fittingly enough, Grann’s favorite topic to write about is obsession—the obsession of explorers, detectives, murderers, con artists or anyone. In his first book, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, Grann tells the story of Percy Fawcett a once world famous explorer’s search for El Dorado, a legendary city Fawcett believed to be in the Amazon. Through penis-parasitizing fish, terrifying parasites and much more, Fawcett’s expedition endured a harrowing journey through one of the most potentially deadly places on the planet. In his second book, The Devil and Sherlock Holmes: Tales of Murder, Madness, and Obsession Grann brings together his finest articles for The New Yorker in one place. You might as well buy them both, because once you read one you’ll want to obsessively read the other. Be sure to Rate and Comment on iTunes.
