Hoy vamos a recorrer la historia de un grupo mítico a través de sus singles, grabaciones que van desde 1964 a 2007 y que comprimen la historia del rock en esas pequeñas joyas que son los discos. El grupo, un clásico: The Kinks. Este grupo londinense lo fundaron los hermanos Ray y Dave Davies en 1963 y formó parte de la llamada invasión británica de los EEUU. The Kinks está reconocido como uno de los grupos de rock más importantes e influyentes de todos los tiempos. Su música se alimenta de una amplia gama de géneros, entre los que se cuentan el R&B, el music hall británico, la música folclórica y el country. La canción fue escrita por Ray Davies, que por entonces estaba pasando por un momento muy difícil. Los Kinks estaban en la cresta de la ola, pero las tensiones internas, las demandas, y una carga desmesurada de trabajo les habían convertido en unos pequeños miserables. Davies también estaba lidiando con la paternidad, e incluso dejó la banda por un tiempo. Mientras se recuperaba, Davies escribió "Sunny Afternoon", creando un alter ego para expresar sus sentimientos. En el libro The Kinks: The Official Biography, Ray Davies dice que escribió esta canción después de que el mánager del grupo, Robert Wace, hubiese pasado la noche bailando con un travesti. Dice Ray: Recuerdo un incidente en una discoteca. Robert Wace había estado bailando con una guapísima chica negra y dijo: "Creo que me estoy enamorando". Y nos pareció bien hasta que nos fuimos a las 6 de la mañana, y entonces le dije: "Pero… ¿Has visto su barba?" y él dijo "Sí, pero con la borrachera que llevo, no estoy para minucias…” La canción fue vetada por la BBC aduciendo publicidad encubierta de Coca-Cola. La cadena no permitía ningún tipo de referencia corporativa o patrocinio. Así que, tuvieron que cambiar la primer versión en la que se citaba a Coca Cola por una segunda en la la cita es “cherry cola”, algo más genérica. En 1969, los Kinks publicaron un magnifico single titulado “Plastic Man” en el que Ray Davis, nuevamente, criticaba la vacuidad de todos esos “Hombres de plástico” que nos rodean. Una magnifica canción que no entró en las listas de éxitos de su país porque la BBC, nuevamente la BBC, prohibió su difusión debido a que el primer estribillo terminaba con las palabras “plastic bum”, una frase que en argot viene a significar “culo”. Demasiado atrevido, al parecer, para los muy educados responsables de la cadena pública británica. Victoria es el tema que abre el álbum Arthur (O la decadencia del Imperio Británico), y que hoy cerrará nuestro programa. En el más puro estilo satírico, Ray Davies, como no, yuxtapone la dura realidad de la vida en Gran Bretaña durante el siglo 19 con las paternalistas aspiraciones del Imperio Británico en la época victoriana ( "Desde el Oeste al Este / desde los más ricos a los más pobres / La reina Victoria los amaba a todos"), y pone de manifiesto el cinismo de la corono británica cuando adula a la oprimida clase obrera haciéndoles parecer idiotas: "Aunque soy pobre, soy libre / Cuando sea grande voy a luchar / Por esta tierra moriré", Por la corona moriré”. Pues nada. Bueno amigos, hemos llegado al final. Hemos repasado una selección de sencillos que hicieron de The Kinks un gran grupo. Como el tiempo nos persigue, otra vez…, nos despedimos hasta la semana que viene, y como siempre… ¡¡¡Buenas vibraciones!!!

La banda tuvo numerosos vocalistas, entre ellos Rod Stewart, otro estudiante de la misma escuela que cantó con el grupo en varias ocasiones a principios de 1962 hasta que éste formó su propio grupo. You Really Got Me» fue escrita por Ray Davies. Se publicó en un sencillo en agosto de 1964, y al mes siguiente llegó al núm. 1 del UK singles chart y permaneció en ese puesto durante dos semanas. Este gran éxito los llevó en volandas a la fama y a ser una de las bandas británicas más representativas. La canción, que se basa principalmente en un riff ejecutado con acordes de quinta, es clave para los posteriores géneros del rock and roll, en particular en el hard rock y el punk rock porque los nuevos ritmos se basarían en estos acordes. All Day and All of the Night" fue escrita por Ray Davies. Esta canción tiene una estructura muy parecida a la de otros éxitos de la banda pero es más compleja en cuanto al riff y el solo de guitarra. Se publicó el año 1964 y alcanzó el puesto nº 2 en UK Singles Chart y el nº 7 en los Estados Unidos. Y otra vez con las demandas. Ray Davies demandó a la banda californiana The Doors por la canción "Hello, I Love You", la cual tiene un riff muy parecido. Finalmente la demanda fue ganada por The Kinks. Esta es pues la genuina All Day and all of the night. A pesar del título, Suuny Afternoon, no nos hace la crónica despreocupada de una tarde de verano. Lo que nos cuenta es la historia de un tipo que vivía la vida a todo trapo hasta que hacienda le quitó su dinero, su casa y el yate y que, su nuevo estado, solo le permite disfrutar de una tarde soleada. La canción fue escrita por Ray Davies, que por entonces estaba pasando por un momento muy difícil. Los Kinks estaban en la cresta de la ola, pero las tensiones internas, las demandas, y una carga desmesurada de trabajo les habían convertido en unos pequeños miserables. Davies también estaba lidiando con la paternidad, e incluso dejó la banda por un tiempo. Mientras se recuperaba, Davies escribió "Sunny Afternoon", creando un alter ego para expresar sus sentimientos. "La única manera en que podía interpretar cómo me sentía era a través de un aristócrata polvoriento y caído en desgracia, triste y decadente, y convertido finalmente en un canalla. Waterloo Sunset (en español «Anochecer de Waterloo») fue lanzada como sencillo por primera vez en mayo de 1967. Compuesta también por Ray Davies, es una de las canciones más conocidas del grupo. Fue interpretada en vivo por Ray Davies en la ceremonia de clausura de los Juegos Olímpicos Londres 2012. La letra, escrita en tercera persona, describe a dos amantes pasando por un puente sobre el Támesis y dirigiéndose a la Estación de Waterloo. Pese a su complejo arreglo, las sesiones para «Waterloo Sunset» duraron solamente diez horas; Dave Davies comentó luego sobre la grabación: “Pasamos mucho tiempo tratando de obtener un nuevo sonido de guitarra, para dar una sensación única al tema. Al final usamos un efecto de eco, que sonaba novedoso porque nadie lo había hecho desde la década de 1950.” El sencillo fue uno de los éxitos más grandes del grupo en el Reino Unido, alcanzando el número dos en las listas. “Lola”, otro gran éxito de The Kinks, también fue escrita por Ray Davies. En esta ocasión nos cuenta un encuentro romántico entre un chico y un travesti en una discoteca del Soho Londinense. Lanzado en junio de 1970, el sencillo fue un éxito inmediato. En el libro The Kinks: The Official Biography, Ray Davies dice que escribió esta canción después de que el mánager del grupo, Robert Wace, hubiese pasado la noche bailando con un travesti. Dice Ray: Recuerdo un incidente en una discoteca. Robert Wace había estado bailando con una guapísima chica negra y dijo: "Creo que me estoy enamorando". Y nos pareció bien hasta que nos fuimos a las 6 de la mañana, y entonces le dije: "Pero… ¿Has visto su barba?" y él dijo "Sí, pero con la borrachera que llevo, no estoy para minucias…” La canción fue vetada por la BBC aduciendo publicidad encubierta de Coca-Cola. La cadena no permitía ningún tipo de referencia corporativa o patrocinio. Así que, tuvieron que cambiar la primer versión en la que se citaba a Coca Cola por una segunda en la la cita es “cherry cola”, algo más genérica. En 1969, los Kinks publicaron un magnifico single titulado “Plastic Man” en el que Ray Davis, nuevamente, criticaba la vacuidad de todos esos “Hombres de plástico” que nos rodean. Una magnifica canción que no entró en las listas de éxitos de su país porque la BBC, nuevamente la BBC, prohibió su difusión debido a que el primer estribillo terminaba con las palabras “plastic bum”, una frase que en argot viene a significar “culo”. Demasiado atrevido, al parecer, para los muy educados responsables de la cadena pública británica. Victoria es el tema que abre el álbum Arthur (O la decadencia del Imperio Británico), y que hoy cerrará nuestro programa. En el más puro estilo satírico, Ray Davies, como no, yuxtapone la dura realidad de la vida en Gran Bretaña durante el siglo 19 con las paternalistas aspiraciones del Imperio Británico en la época victoriana ( "Desde el Oeste al Este / desde los más ricos a los más pobres / La reina Victoria los amaba a todos"), y pone de manifiesto el cinismo de la corono británica cuando adula a la oprimida clase obrera haciéndoles parecer idiotas: "Aunque soy pobre, soy libre / Cuando sea grande voy a luchar / Por esta tierra moriré", Por la corona moriré”. Pues nada. Bueno amigos, hemos llegado al final. Hemos repasado una selección de sencillos que hicieron de The Kinks un gran grupo. Como el tiempo nos persigue, otra vez…, nos despedimos hasta la semana que viene, y como siempre… ¡¡¡Buenas vibraciones!!!
