Synopsis:  On this month's “Meet the BIPOC Press,” award-winning journalists Maria Hinojosa & Chenjerai Kumanyika lay out the constitutional crisis before us and ask what the media's role is in this moment. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description:  In the US today, immigrants, students, visitors and even U.S. residents — are facing exclusion, militarization, detention, rendition, and elimination of basic due process rights. Are our media doing enough to sound the alarm? In recent weeks, the government has detained students like Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi, apparently over their support for Palestine. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was wrongfully exported to El Salvador, is being held at the notorious CECOT mega prison. We've also seen widespread ICE operations, random visas revoked and ideologically-driven attacks on the funding and functioning of our institutions of higher education. Our guests on this month's Meet the BIPOC Press live and work at the intersection of these issues: Maria Hinojosa is the co-anchor and Executive Producer of Latino USA, and producer of the Pulitzer-prize winning podcast, Suave — which is just out with a second season. She is a Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence at Barnard College. Chenjerai Kumanyika is a Peabody Award-winner, creator and co-host of Uncivil, and creator and host of the podcast series Empire City: The Untold Origin Story of the NYPD. He is also an Assistant Professor of Journalism at New York University. As the Republican regime moves towards authoritarianism, will the media stand for democracy before it's too late?“What's being taken advantage of in this moment is the painting of a picture of people who are, to use that 1990s term, ‘super predators,' therefore, they deserve nothing, no due process. It's not true. But if you only consume media that is coming from the Trump administration, you are convinced that all of these people who are being taken out of the country are terrifying.” - Maria HinojosaGuests:•  Maria Hinojosa: Pulitzer-Prize Winning Journalist & Founder, Futuro Media; Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence, Barnard College.•  Chenjerai Kumanyika: Peabody-Prize Winning Audio Journalist, Uncivil & Empire City: The Untold Origin Story of the NYPD; Assistant Professor Journalism, NYU Music Credit: “Present Past” by Mark De Clive Lowe from his album Past Present (tones poems across time) released on BBE Records..  "Steppin" by Podington Bear. Video version: https://youtu.be/fJWJgieaZN4 From hosting parties as kids on two home hifis in a small west country town to playing some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world, schooldays best friends Nick Halkes and Andy Smith have enjoyed amazing careers both individually and together. Here they talk about remixing , touring and so much more as they prepare for the release of the third instalment of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation series on BBE that Andy compiles. As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UK mst respected dance and electronic music industry executives. Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox's night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham's South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building). Following the 2017 release of the Reach Up Disco Wonderland compilation on the renowned BBE Records, Volume 2 was released in 2019. Andy and Nick's re-edits of two tracks on the 2017 Reach Up Disco Wonderland comp were just the start. Nick's collaboration with Full Intention, both to release original music on Midnight Riot and remix State of the Nation feat the Jungle Brothers, gained support from Purple Disco Machine, Dimitri from Paris and Roger Sanchez. From there a chart topping Nick Reach Up remix of Hideaway by De'lacey followed and a Nick Reach Up collab with Birdee and vocal legend Barbara Tucker that scored coveted daytime Radio One play in the UK whilst hitting top 3 on Traxsource. An invitation to remix Mel C took the Nick Reach Up sound into new territory whilst a rework of Body Work by Hot Streak also took off. Most recently Nick was approached to remix the Kylie single Magic taken from her album appropriately entitled ‘Disco' and in October 2020 had 4 remixes of his simultaneously in the Music Week Upfront Top 20. In the time that all this was happening amongst other achievements Andys re-edit of Will Sessions & Amp Fiddler feat. Dames Brown – Lost Without You notched up a tune of the month accolade in Mixmag. Despite having much to look back on Reach Up's monthly radio show on the award-winning Soho Radio features regular guest mixes from the likes of Full Intention, Jumpin' Jack Frost, Young Pulse, Danny Rampling and more showcasing the hottest new music along with classic and more hidden gems from back in the day. Despite knowing each other for decades maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on Okayplayer's message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship were born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called The Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights Vol. 1.5 first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. Hello Decisive Series Subscribers,Roberto Ingram your podcast host and producer here, I'm thrilled to bring you yet another insightful conversation with a remarkable artist shaping the landscape of electronic music. Today, we have the privilege of delving into the world of Jan Kincl, a Croatian DJ, record producer, remixer, engineer, and live performer whose work has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide. International media placed Jan among "the most interesting voices coming from the region", and his debut album, a deeply jazz-informed house record "In Plain Sight" recorded with a French keyboard player Regis Kattie, got described as “one of the most significant pieces of regional contemporary dance music” with support from Laurent Garnier, Derrick Carter, Alton Miller, Jazzanova, Volcov, Tony Humphries, Lefto, Claude Young, Jimpster, DJ Bone, Mark Grusane, Kai Alcé and many more.“An amazingly beautiful album! Very deep.” - Claude Young“The funk's all over this project!” - Kai Alcé“Superb deepness!” - Laurent GarnierBorn and raised in Zagreb, Jan is a product of the late 90s clubbing scene emerging in Croatia. A then-teenager, who embraced the music of the Motor City as a teacher has grown into a recognizable presence in the regional music life. Today, Jan is equally recognized for the music crafted in his Cycle studio, and life-long dedication to the art of DJing. Influenced equally by jazz and hi-tech jazz, he is devoted to a more traditional way of presenting music and feels more aligned with artists not limited by genres or eras. New, old, fast, slow, soulful, or rough. For Jan, the juxtaposition of all this is what DJing is about.Even though the majority of his work is dance music, this broad approach allowed him to operate in different scenes. Remix for a Brazilian legend Ivan Mamão Conti (Azymuth) on the legendary Far Out Recordings, remixes for a German jazz-funk band Key Elements on Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv label, a solo 12” under CVER alias on Oye Black Label, and a track on Deep Inspiration Show Records' ‘Family Things Volume 1' all came out in a period of a single year. The last project to hit 2020, though, were reinterpretations of Radojka Sverko's ‘Kud Plovi Ovaj Brod', a special 50th-anniversary re-release of a 1970 chanson classic which holds a unique place in Croatian music folklore. In 2021, Jan is continuing the string of releases for BBE Records, PDV Records, Get Physical, and Deep Inspiration Show Records. On top of that, a debut record from Cycle Records, his recently launched label, is coming out. Titled "For A Minute", a 12" features two of Jan's original versions, and two remixes from a Chicago house legend Gene Hunt.In parallel with working on his own music, Jan's had a decade-long run lecturing on the subject of ‘History of Electronic Music' at the Music & Sound department of United Pop Academy, still ongoing, and is running CYCLE - a studio, and music production company based in Zagreb.Contact us here to book Jan for a DJ show, live performance, or lecture/workshopJoin us next time for another episode of the Decisive podcast series, where we'll continue to explore the stories and sounds shaping the world of music today. Until then, stay tuned and stay inspired."

Show Time, enjoy this week's episode hosted by Spanish DJ & Producer KIKO NAVARRO. Carving out an enviable reputation across the globe for his distinctive and highly personal brand of House music, Kiko Navarro's voyage of sonic discovery has been going strong for almost three decades now. Born in Mallorca, Kiko's sound reflects the sun-drenched, slow living atmosphere of the Balearic island he still calls home. Obsessed from an early age with the more soulful side of US House music, Navarro's DJ skills soon attracted the attention of nightlife behemoth Pacha who offered him club residencies both in Palma and in Ibiza. Next came a monthly gig at Space Ibiza and the rest, as they say, is history. Despite having been DJing for more than a quarter of a century, Kiko Navarro is constantly growing and developing his style; it's an approach that keeps him in constant demand at some of the most prestigious nightclubs on the planet. From London to the Far East, Kiko has travelled the far and wide with his music, embracing sounds from each continent as he goes. Equally at home on festival stages at Southport Weekender and Southern Soul Festival or in some dark, underground sweat-box, Kiko's passion is palpable; his music selection is impeccable. Inspired by his experiences as a DJ, Kiko Navarro brought a multitude of influences into the studio as he began to master the art of production. Underpinned by his obvious devotion to House music, Kiko's love of afro-latin sounds has been evident in his feel-good, dance-floor oriented productions since the very beginning. His connection to Pacha led to several releases on the label as well as a mixed compilation ‘The Latin Sound Of Pacha' which was issued on Tommy Boy records in 2001. Working with many of the world's most respected imprints such as Local Talk, King Street Sounds and Osunlade's Yoruba Records attracted an impressive list of top flight DJs to Kiko's music, ranging all the way from Gilles Peterson on one end of the musical spectrum to Jeff Mills on the other. Following several busy years spent touring the world as the official DJ for the Ducati Marlboro Moto GP Team, Kiko locked himself away in the studio, emerging in 2017 with a new solo album: ‘Everything Happens For A Reason'. Released on BBE Records, a label renowned for quality music of all shades, the album is gaining plaudits from across the musical community thanks to its warmth, originality and soul. Ten years on from his debut LP ‘Perceptions', Kiko revisited its biggest hit ‘Soñando Contigo', creating a brand new ‘Orchestral' version for 2017 and in the process paying homage to the track that made him famous. Featuring special guest appearances from DJ Spen, Concha Buika, Boris Dlugosch and Julie McKnight, ‘Everything Happens For A Reason' displays each shade of Kiko's musical palette in vivid Technicolor. A true Renaissance Man; now also a family man, today's Kiko Navarro is perhaps even more focused and dedicated to his life in music than ever before. An album tour this year will see him play DJ sets in Italy, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Japan, South Korea, China with many more to be confirmed. Whether in the studio crafting records or in the club controlling the dance-floor, Kiko's musical mission has become the habit of a lifetime. Enjoy this Afro House special journey with the one & only KIKO NAVARRO live from Tel Aviv! N/A This show is syndicated & distributed exclusively by Syndicast. Intro : - Lion Babe : Treat Me Like Fire 2. Passerelle radiophonique : - Little Dragon : Klapp Klapp (Swindle remix) - Action Bronson : Actin Crazy - Haute : Down - La Méthode : The Same Thing - Julio Bashmore feat. J'Danna : Rythm Of Auld   3. Interview DJ Oil : - DJ Oil : Afrotress - DJ Oil : Drop Out - DJ Oil : Le Rythme de la Vie - DJ Oil : Paolo 4. La Muzulière : - Osaka Monaurail : (She's A) Riptide
