New York-based musician and America's Sweetheart Nick Miller joins to discuss the underseen 150-minute Extended Cut of Tom Hanks's directorial debut, 'That Thing You Do!'. It's a meandering, expansive version of the film that takes the original cut's effervescent (if slight) shot of pop nostalgia and, at its best, aims for comparisons to great surveyors of cinematic Americana like Robert Altman & Jonathan Demme (who serves as producer on this film). We discuss the two versions of the film, their differences, and how the Extended Cut showcases even further Tom Hanks's singular knowledge of the era and its musical landscape. Then, we talk about the eponymous tune, an infectious earworm written by the late Adam Schlesinger which took on a life of its own as a charting hit single and was nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar in 1997. We also discuss the film as part and parcel with Tom Hanks's decade-long fixation with postwar America and the Greatest Generation's sense of national purpose, how the movie gets right many of the intricacies of songwriting and band dynamics, and make a plea to the 300+ artists (including Squeeze and They Might Be Giants) who submitted versions of "That Thing You Do!" to finally release their recordings. The Academy's music branch made the nomination process for the Best Original Song Oscar a lot more interesting beginning in 1958. The new preliminary shortlist was started in this year, whittling down the many potential nominees down to 10 before another vote gave us the official five nominees. How will that affect the songs that make it through to the final five? Host Jeff Commings will let you know some of the songs that just missed the cut, and give his thoughts on why they didn't pass the first round. The hit musical Gigi had a chance to get two original songs nominated, but perhaps the preliminary ballot prevented history from being made that year.

All of these movies are now available on VOD, all of these songs deserved to be re-visited & listened to once more, and one of our mind’s have been changed since we reviewed the category last winter to create some re-rank drama. So we enjoyed this recap. Coco’s “Remember Me” involves much more than just some lyrics in a song. Mary J. Blige and her performance at the Oscars makes us wonder why an entire genre of music rarely wins this statuette. “Mystery of Love” by Sufjan Stevens is a perfect marriage between song and film while Common actually adds to what he sang in the Marshall credits to his award season performances. Then we have the snubbed “This is Me,” and as we do throughout this episode, we discuss how our perceptions of this song & performance have changed since Oscar Night. It’s a fast, fun, and surprisingly substantive look back. Go back & listen to our massive catalog of episodes. There are now 10 Best Original Song Oscar retrospectives. We’ve also reviewed many other categories of the Academy’s past from 1997’s Best Picture - the Year of Titanic all the way through 1989’s Best Original Screenplay where Spike Lee’s script for Do The Right Thing lost to Dead Poets Society, and even as far back as the 1974 Best Actor race where former TV star Art Carney somehow beat out Pacino, Hoffman, and Nicholson. It’s the 1983/84 Song category featuring three movies, Flashdance, Tender Mercies, and Yentl that we both want to watch and re-watch in the coming months after this review. Iconic performances from Jennifer Beales and Barbara Streisand, an Oscar winning performance from Robert Duvall, these films and all the youtube watching black holes involved are chuck full of serious acting, terrific songs, and great 1980-ness. Of course, we review these songs one by one, how they were used in the movies, how some were performed at the Oscars and on TV like The Johnny Carson Show. Again, they do help us a great deal on iTunes, where most of you are listening. Stay tuned for upcoming episodes. We’ll finish our 1991 Best Actress retrospective. Mike no 1 will reverse roles with Also Mike in another Devil and the Advocate quickisode where we’ll be discussing the Halloween trailer debuting on Friday (today… while I write this). Do please go back and enjoy our massive catalog of episodes. We covered the shit out of last award season, and all those Oscar nominees are currently on VOD for you to watch at home. There’s also a full review of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Netflix offerings, more retrospectives including six Best Original Song Oscar halfisodes, and all the Hollywood News, film festival updates, and 2018-19 Oscar previews you could want. Check them out! As always, when reality sucks, watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!!!
