If you, or someone you love, struggles with finding the ideal balance between these two poles, you're not alone. Given society's tendency to foster the ideal of independence (or hyper-independence), many individuals, couples, and families struggle with discovering the ideal level of interdependence that fosters safety and the ability to individuate, bloom, and grow. Join Dr. Carla and mental health expert Manami Yamamoto, LMFT, for a gentle conversation about the art of creating healthy interdependence. Tokyo Vampire Hotel Review: A Fang-tastic Flop That's Hard to Sink Your Teeth IntoWhen you check into Tokyo Vampire Hotel, you might expect a thrilling, blood-soaked horror fest that lives up to its dramatic name. Instead, you'll find a chaotic, over-the-top mess that's more draining than it is exciting. Directed by Sion Sono, known for his daring and unique style, this series somehow manages to be both visually striking and narratively disappointing. Despite its flashes of brilliance, Tokyo Vampire Hotel fails to deliver a cohesive or engaging story, leaving viewers lost in a labyrinth of uninteresting plotlines and hollow characters. The Story: A Chaotic BiteTokyo Vampire Hotel centers around a battle between two ancient vampire clans, with the fate of humanity hanging in the balance. The concept had potential, especially with the eerie, gothic atmosphere that the series tries to cultivate. Unfortunately, the execution falls flat. The plot quickly becomes a confusing jumble of subplots, time jumps, and dramatic set pieces that fail to connect. Instead of a compelling narrative, viewers are served a chaotic buffet of violence, gore, and supernatural theatrics, none of which feel earned or meaningful. The series never quite decides whether it wants to be a dark fantasy, a survival thriller, or an action horror, resulting in a tonal mess.Uninteresting Protagonists: All Bite, No CharmOne of the most significant weaknesses of Tokyo Vampire Hotel is its lackluster characters. Despite strong performances from the cast, particularly Ami Tomite as Manami and Kaho as the enigmatic K, the protagonists feel more like props than people. Their motivations are murky, and their development is practically nonexistent, making it hard for viewers to care about their fates. Shinnosuke Mitsushima and Megumi Kagurazaka bring intensity to their roles, but the script gives them little to work with. Even in the midst of chaos, the characters' reactions feel strangely muted, as if they're going through the motions rather than truly living in this world.Visually Striking, But Style Over SubstanceCredit where it's due: Sion Sono brings his signature style to the series, filling it with bold, colorful visuals and moments of surreal beauty. The set design of the hotel, with its gothic grandeur and claustrophobic corridors, creates a sense of dread that almost makes you want to see what's around the next corner. Yet, this aesthetic flair can't hide the lack of substance underneath. The endless stylized violence and frantic editing become exhausting rather than thrilling, and the series often feels like it's trying too hard to shock rather than to tell a coherent story.Verdict: Not Worth the StayTokyo Vampire Hotel could have been a stylish, adrenaline-pumping addition to the vampire genre. Instead, it ends up feeling like a missed opportunity—a series with a striking visual palette but no real heart. With a convoluted story, uninteresting protagonists, and a style that prioritizes spectacle over storytelling, it's a show that ultimately bites off more than it can chew. Unless you're a die-hard Sion Sono fan or in desperate need of something to watch, this is one hotel you might want to skip.Stick around until the end for a round of Movie 20 Questions!Safe travels, nomads.

GOOD TROUBLE—Troublemakers is a magazine about society's misfits. At least from the Japanese point of view. A bilingual, English/Japanese magazine, Troublemakers came about as a way to showcase people who were different, who stayed true to themselves, or about the long road those people had taken to self-acceptance.The founders, Editor Yuto Miyamoto and art director Manami Inoue, were inspired by a notion that Japanese culture perhaps did not value those who strayed too far from the herd. The magazine has been a success not just in Japan but globally, and perhaps mirrors a trend we see in streaming, for example, of a general public acceptance of universal stories from different places—gengo nanté kinishee ni (language be damned). Think, especially, of the success of Japanese television and movies like Shogun or Tokyo Vice or Godzilla Minus One. Of Japanese Pop, and anime, and food. It's an endless list. But Troublemakers is more than just a cultural document. It is proof of something shared, a commonality of human experience that exists everywhere. Speaking to Yuto and Manami, you sense a desire—and an invitation—to connect. With everyone. And that's, ultimately, what Troublemakers tries to do. ©2024 The Full-Bleed Podcast is a production of Magazeum LLC. Visit magazeum.co for more information.

A member of the Feel My Bicep crew alongside the likes of Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson (who'd go on to form the duo Bicep), Rory Hamilton aka Hammer isn't just someone who has a sense for discovering interesting electronica works. After decades of hosting parties in Glasgow and later London, as well as spinning records the world over, the Belfast-born talent knows how to stitch together those records to create moments of passionate revelry. India has bore witness to that skill multiple times at this point as Hamilton returned to the country earlier this year after half a decade, adding dates in Goa and Kolkata alongside Delhi and Mumbai before jetting off to Sri Lanka for further performances with Tropical Wax for an 8-show tour of India and Sri Lanka. He recorded a mix for Wild City in Sri Lanka at the end of his tour to look back at his time in the region, which also included signing on Kolkata's 8-bit culprit – the second artist from India to work with the label after New Delhi Anhad Khanna aka Sublime Sound. "From the first ever gig I played in Auro in New Delhi, I learnt that the dance floor in India is special in that the sense of excitement is genuinely palpable. Taking risks pays off," says Hamilton. "I've also learnt that like every country, each city is different and you need to be ready to fit into it." Consequently, while often operating close to house, disco and some techno, how Hammer uses a particular style can vary. Recorded at The Luna Terrace of Galle's Closenburg Hotel, the HQ of Tropical Wax, the Wild City mix goes from an unreleased remix of Syreeta Wright's chants on 'Shanti', to the disco-inspired Baldo Remix of Demi Riquísimo & Manami's 'Sugar Snap'. Testifying Hammer's abilities to create notable moments in his sets, the mix offers several instances – from the melody-led energy of Two Mamarrachos to the respite of the laidback chords of Madvilla's 'Galactic Banana'. The best, however, is the house-meets-pop euphoria that comes almost as a cinematic euphoric climax to the mix with an unreleased track featuring the voice of Lili Chan. ----------------------------------- SEGUICI SU: - Web Page: https://www.nippop.it - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nippopbologna - Twitter: https://twitter.com/NipPopOfficial - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nippopofficial - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/nippopbologna

Manami Iijima Martin is a professional triathlete from Guam who is making a name for herself in the sport as she represents the island she loves. A swimmer from a very young age, Manami has carried her competitiveness in the water to her professional career as a triathlete. She was first out of the water in Oceanside just a few months ago, where she finished 8th on the day and second out of the water at Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells. She moved up the PTO ranks in 2021 and holds a goal to crack the top 100 in 2022 amongst a field of top-notch females. She is passionate about putting Guam on the map in the triathlon world, and we believe that she is a woman to watch in these coming years. On this week's episode Haley and Alyssa catch up with professional triathlete Manami Iijima. Manami was born in Japan, but has spent most of her life on the island of Guam. After two years without racing, Manami traveled to the US in the fall of 2021 to race 70.3 Oceanside and 70.3 Indian Wells, finishing 8th and 15th respectively. In between the two races Manami had to make the long trip back to Guam, but for a worthy reason; to attend a ceremony that granted her naturalized citizenship in Guam. Manami is hoping to be the first person ever to represent Guam in triathlon at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, and becoming a citizen was one of the first steps in this process. This year she also plans to compete on the Continental Cup and WTS circuits to earn points toward her Olympic qualification.  A veteran of the 70.3 distance, Manami talks about how her training is adapting toward getting ready to take on short course racing. She tells us what she likes about the short course format, but also that she does have her sights set on 140.6 some day as well. She loves racing all distances and is encouraging more women to do the same.  Follow Manami on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/manamitris/ (@manamitris) and you can also find the link to her Strava profile in her bio. **Support the Podcast** Sign up for the Feisty Triathlon Team at https://live-feisty.mn.co/ (feistyteam.com ) https://teamzealios.com/ (Zealios Skincare:) Code - ironwomen = 15% off https://info.insidetracker.com/ironwomen (InsideTracker): 25% off at https://info.insidetracker.com/feisty (insidetracker.com/feisty)  https://nuunlife.com/ (Nuun Hydration:) code StayFeisty for 30% off at nuunlife.com This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podsights - https://podsights.com/privacy Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Today's guest is Manami Tamaoki, Director of Tuttle-Mori Agency, Inc in Tokyo. We recorded this interview a little while ago, when Manami just got out of a true virtual meeting marathon that took place before, during and after the Frankfurt Book Fair. I did not envy her! I just wanted to mention that at some point during the interview, Manami talks about the Swedish bestseller titled Smart Phone Brain, which was indeed as she indicates the bestselling book of the year in Japan, and topped several year-end lists. However, Manami would like to correct that it has won one award, and not three awards as she mentions during the interview. Show Notes A selection of Manami's book recommendations: - The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity - The New Long Life: A Framework for Flourishing in a Changing World - The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It - The Joy Of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage - Lost in Translation: An Illustrated Compendium of Untranslatable Words About Manami Manami is Director for Tuttle-Mori Agency, the leading literary agency based in Tokyo, Japan. She oversees the publishing business and relationships for the agency between the US, UK, Europe, Scandinavia and other territories around the world. Prior to becoming a Director, she was General Manager of the agency, as well as Head of the Nonfiction Department. As a co-agent selling into Japan, she works on numerous best-selling authors including Carlo Rovelli, Spencer Johnson, Adam Grant, Angela Duckworth, Susan Cain, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, Kelly McGonigal, Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott, Yanis Varoufakis, Muhammad Yunus, Thomas Friedman, John Carreyrou. She has been a featured speaker and panelist at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Japan Audiobook Association, and interviewed by an award winning author for his book about publishing professionals behind the scene, as well as prominent business magazines on being a Japanese agent in the international publishing market for twenty-nine years.

Hopefully this makes it easy to follow. The music is captured from Alex's copy of Smash Bros, so hopefully it's fair use! Radio edit aired 14th October 2019. I've never been starstruck with musicians or singers (well...except seeing Neutral Milk Hotel or Mineral or The Roots live). Although I AM awestruck meeting people with intense passion, integrity and sincerity.  Here we have Manami who is a Japanese singer that embodies all three characteristics in her life.  We haven't met in at least a decade but I'm proud to have her as a student and as a friend.   Her career rocketed when she won a singing contest organized by @nigo and @pharrell which resulted in two tracks produced by the N.E.R.D. legend himself.  This paved her way to a career spanning seven years in Okinawa with all sorts of local sponsors and collaborations.  She then had the chance to perform at various  overseas venues.  Meanwhile, I would happen glance at her promotional videos that blanketed from the big LED screens of Shibuya to the local television sets in Okinawa homes and to the Japanese youth grasping their smartphones and gawking at her dance routines in her youtube channel.  After all this, she returned to Tokyo this year with renewed vigor and purpose; poised to bring her fans a new sound that I'm sure they will embrace.  I was excited to see her and catch up again but I'm thrilled to watch her talent mature on a new level.  That's just how she rolls.
