Starfighter squadron in the Star Wars science fiction saga
POPULARITY
SHOW NOTES: Because Miles' schedule sometimes means he has to prioritise other shows, even shows that aren't ours, we decide to do something quick and off the cuff and we end up with one of our longest episodes, go figure. Of course, we got Miles to talk about Doctor Who, what did we think would happen because that boy goes feral pretty quickly! Mainly talking about the four recent Doctor Who specials put on in the last few months, the boys talk toot about Star Beast's, body horror and Ncuti Gatwa's energy before Charlie asks Miles a lot of strange and stupid questions about Doctor Who and we lose the plot and our remaining sanity really damn quickly! The Star Beast (08:19) Wild Blue Yonder (25:57) The Giggle (45:00) The Church on Ruby Road (53:10) Silly and Insane Questions (1:15:11) The music for the opening and closing is ‘Who is the Doctor' by Jon Pertwee. Yes. Him. TALKING POINTS INCLUDE: Why Miles doesn't want to host a Doctor Who podcast. Miles' application of ‘Get it done and go to the pub' theory of how to deal with any job as applied to TV Production. The struggle of ongoing media to maintain a schedule. The theatrical camp charm of Classic Who. The number of actors from the era of Television we're talking about whose Wiki articles usually end with ‘Death from complications due to Alcoholism' is incredibly large and no joke. The curse of Doctor Who being that Modern Doctor Who can never look cheap ever again.Drinking Game Rules for this episode: Take a shot every time Charlie says Disney Money. Two shots if he sounds vaguely contemptuous. Watching the BBC have to learn how to do effects heavy shows. Red Dwarf. Differences between ‘Doctor Who and the Star Beast' (Doctor Who Weekly) and ‘The Star Beast' the TV Special. The different looks about the Meep, Miles' wife's massive Pokemon Plushie collection (which Miles doesn't have a problem with). Traditional 2005-2009 Who. Miles doesn't like the 10th Doctor (SHOCK), the alien-ness of the Doctor, Capaldi and the guitar, Charlie's inability to watch the 90s X-Men cartoon, Miles' issues with the Whittaker-era and what they could have done, Wild Blue Yonder, Event Horizon, Sunshine, Honestly, another drinking game rule at this point, if we mention Video Box and the 90s, take a shot, what parts of Doctor Who Miles finds scary, Silent Hill 2 (a game Miles wants to play) Body Horror for Kids. Miles compliments David Tennant's acting. Mean Monsters, Neil Gaiman-y ways of looking at the world. Miles admits Logopolis' hard SF and entropy is silly to him. Is magic real in Doctor Who? Magic being turned into a skill tree, Brandon Sanderson, Miles goes on FAR TOO LONG about Dragonball Z Power Levels. The Giggle and how Neil Patrick Harris has ruined the name AH-MEE POND for Miles and Reanna. The Bi-Generation as a way of tying up all our baggage before new baggage, Ncuti Gatwa's incredible energy from the word GO, The Church on Ruby Road, the Doctor's mental health, RTD taking notes from Moffat's beats, Charlie always has time for The Leftovers, Christopher Eccleston's American accent game is strong both here and in Night Country, Miles' generally aparthy towards Star Wars: Ahsoka made him start crawling back to Doctor Who, Planet of the Daleks isn't great, but it's fun, Charlie's old rewatch and Morris Men ARE Evil, Miles' own rewatch and where he's at (FUTURE MILES here, The Myth Makers… not great) Miles and Charlie will never escape Blackface, Series 3 follies and the shows stumbling blocks that'll never really go away until Troughton, the show's changes for better and worse, Charlie was asked to provide insane, stupid questions and HE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. Miles loves ‘The Mutants' (although it turns out Charlie was actually going to be watching ‘The Sea Devils.' Biggs Darklighter sans Porn Stache. PEDANT CORNER: The video Miles mentions that posits 50 years of American Doctor Who is here: https://youtu.be/bCv5o7n_mtk?si=gOy1bZTJ0eDp0Kn6 and watch it, it's great.
Ok, this is another one from the archives, but as with the Robert Watts recording, I've been wanting to put this one out in podcast form for a while too. This is a conversation I had with actor Garrick Hagon back in 2015. If that name doesn't ring a bell, how about Biggs Darklighter.Yes, Garrick is well known for his mostly deleted scenes from Star Wars in which he plays Luke's best pal. I'd met Garrick in the green room at a Star Wars Trilogy day at the BFI southbank earlier that year. I'd been invited there by my old mate Toby Phlipott, Jabba puppeteer and all round good guy.Garrick and I got chatting about how I'd done an interview with Toby and created what turned out to be a very popular video from it. So I suggested we do the same. In fact both of those videos are still on my vimeo channel. So I'll also link to that in the show notes. As with all interviews, when making a video you often cut out certain bits that you don't need. But with a podcast you can make it more long form. So that's what I've done here. The interview was done over the phone, so it won't sound as good as some of my more recent episodes. But it's still definitely very listenable. All the links
On Episode 100 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th anniversary of STAR WARS, the first film (now known as Episode IV: A New Hope) as well as the franchise in general. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is very special guest Garrick Hagon, the actor who portrayed Luke Skywalker's best friend (and the ill-fated X-Wing pilot Red 3) Biggs Darklighter in the 1977 film. Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this week's Retro News segment, including a review of Coney Hatch's debut album by Aaron Martel of the Ridiculous Rock Record Reviews (R4) Podcast. A great track-by-track analysis of that album is available via episodes #93 (side 1) and #103 (side 2) of the R4 Podcast. Welcome to the place where we get to let our geek flags fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This is a look into the world of geekdom and some geek news, comics, The Simpsons, Star Wars, and whatever randomness finds its way onto the recording. This level of the podcast is another one of those fuzzy trio tackle an interesting premise and for this one, we attempt to discourse on building a better (or at least slightly different) Star Wars franchise all by just changing a thing or two. Completely a discussion born out of love for most of the movies but join as as we contemplate potential different things in a very fun dialogue between friends. Our ideas are cliff-noted (aka listed lazily) below. Congrats on completing Level 270 of the podcast! Think positive, test negative, stay safe, wash your hands, wear a mask, and good luck out there. Feel free to contact me on Twitter and/or Instagram (@wookieeriot). You can also reach the show by e-mail, laughitupfuzzballpodcast@gmail.com., or by joining the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1879505335626093). I'd love to hear from you. Tell your friends, geekery is always better with peers. Thank YOU for being a part of this hilarity! There's a plethora of ways to comment about the show and I look forward to seeing your thoughts, comments, and ideas. May the force be with us all, thanks for stopping by, you stay classy, be excellent to each other and party on dudes! TTFN… Wookiee out! This week Mike is doing a book review on Charles Soule's Light Of The Jedi as well as giving an overview in the new era of Star Wars; The High Republic! For more detail, for the first 20 minutes, Mike gives some information on The High Republic era (set 200 years before The Phantom Menace) before delving into the review - his reviews are split into 3 parts; the first is completely spoiler free, with some vague information on the book's themes, vehicles & etc while the second will have some very light spoilers, plot details and character information with the last part giving more information about certain aspects and Mike reads out a single page that he believes give a good insight into the book as a whole, but for clarity, he does not spoil the story or what happens to any characters in this recording. Light Of The Jedi was released January 5th 2021 by Charles Soule who has also written Star Wars comics including; The Rise Of Kylo Ren mini-series (ep 1 of SWCIC) the Obi-Wan & Anakin mini-series (ep 11 of SWCIC), the Lando mini-series (ep 18 of SWCIC), as well as the 31-issue run of Poe Dameron and 25-issue run of Darth Vader comics (2017) – Mike will be tackling the Poe & Vader series in the future too! Other High Republic content currently available includes; A Test Of Courage – a young reader novel by Justina Ireland, Into The Dark – a young adult novel by Claudia Gray (who Mike spoke with on SWCIC on December 12th), The High Republic comics by Cavan Scott and High Republic Adventures comics by Daniel José Older, plus Cavan Scott has the “sequel” novel to Light Of The Jedi coming out on July 6th 2021. In the last episode of SWCIC (episode 47), Mike tackled the 6 Heroes stories in the Age Of Rebellion one-shot comic series (from original trilogy); Leia in “Princess Scoundrel”, Han (& Chewie) in “Running From The Rebellion”, Lando in “Cloud City Blues”, Luke in “Fight Or Flight”, Yoda in “The Trial Of Dagobah” and Biggs Darklighter & Porkins in “Stolen Valor”, plus Mike also gives additional information about each of the characters, connections, species and more!! Mike now has a Patreon, where this review was released a day early and there's an exclusive new show “Afterthoughts”, with 2 episodes being *FREE* to anyone – one of which is S1 of the Witcher series and the other is The Phantom Menace, as Mike & Megan have started a full Star Wars run-through! Plus there are unsplit full-length episodes of his other show, Genuine Chit-Chat, additional photos (including early access to photos of comics for this show) and more, so if you want to support the show and get more content, check it out at http://patreon.com/genuinechitchat Mike was recently on Podcasts We Listen To, speaking about his show Genuine Chit-Chat and next week he talks all about this show and his love of Star Wars: http://spoti.fi/3uus0PT Mike appeared on episode 76 Frank Burton's Ragbag podcast: http://spoti.fi/3aLgx5e Mike & Megan were on the Batman retrospective on 20th Century Geek, all parts are out where they discuss Batman '66, the Burtonverse movies, Mask Of The Phantasm & the Dark Knight trilogy, part 1 here: https://spoti.fi/3sTeN2m Find Mike @GenuineChitChat on Twitter, @Genuine_ChitChat on Instagram & /GenuineChitChat on Facebook! This week features the 6 Heroes stories in the Age Of Rebellion one-shot comic series (from original trilogy); Leia in “Princess Scoundrel”, Han (& Chewie) in “Running From The Rebellion”, Lando in “Cloud City Blues”, Luke in “Fight Or Flight”, Yoda in “The Trial Of Dagobah” and Biggs Darklighter & Porkins in “Stolen Valor”, plus Mike also gives additional information about each of the characters, connections, species and more! The 4 main Age Of Republic comics were written by Greg Pak with Tamra Bonvillain as colourist and the following artists did artwork for these stories; Marc Deering, Chris Spouse, Karl Story, Will Sliney, Matteo Buffagni, Scott Koblish and Stefano Landini. The Yoda story (in AoR special) was written by Marc Guggenheim, with Andrea Broccardo as artist and Dono Sánchez-Almara as the colour artist, while the Biggs Darklighter/Porkins story was written & drawn by Jon Adams while Chris O'Halloran did the colours. Leias's comic and the AoR Special were released in April 2019, with Luke Skywalker's released June 2019 (with the other stories released in-between). The AoR Heroes trade paperback was released in August 2019 while the AoR hardcover (with heroes & villains) was released June 2020. The characters in this episode have also had a variety of mini-series between them so check out episodes; 14 for Leia, 24 & 40 for Han, 18 & 37 for Lando, 33 for Yoda and 22 for Chewbacca, as well as the variety of the main run of Star Wars comics for the usual trio! For the AoR villains, check out episode 43 of SWCIC and for the prequel-era Age Of Republic stories, check out episodes; 2 for Maul, 26 for Dooku, 31 for Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon, 35 for Jango Fett, Grievous & Asajj Ventress and 39 for the Padmé, Anakin, Mace Windu and Jar Jar & Rex stories. Mike will be tackling the Age Of Resistance Heroes & Villains shortly too, so be sure to subscribe for that! The short animated Leia story about her obtaining Boushh's armor is an episode of Forces Of Destiny called Bounty Hunted. In the last episode of SWCIC (episode 46), Mike tackled the weirdest (& potentially the best) instalment of Doctor Aphra so far, where Aphra has been enslaved by the homicidal protocol droid Triple-Zero to assemble a crew to steal his lost memories from some of the most secure imperial archive facilities, causing further entanglement with imperial Magna Tolvan, the capture of rebel general Hera Syndulla, setting imperial experiments free and much more! Mike now has a Patreon, where there's an exclusive new show “Afterthoughts” (with 2 episodes being *FREE* to anyone – one of which is S1 of the Witcher series and the other is The Phantom Menace, as Mike & Megan have started a full Star Wars run-through), plus there are unsplit full-length episodes of GCC, additional photos (including early access to photos of comics for this show) and more, so if you want to support the show and get more content, check it out at http://patreon.com/genuinechitchat Mike was recently on Podcasts We Listen To, speaking about his show Genuine Chit-Chat and next week he talks all about this show and his love of Star Wars: http://spoti.fi/3uus0PT Mike appeared on episode 76 Frank Burton's Ragbag podcast: http://spoti.fi/3aLgx5e Mike & Megan were on the Batman retrospective on 20th Century Geek, all parts are out where they discuss Batman '66, the Burtonverse movies, Mask Of The Phantasm & the Dark Knight trilogy, part 1 here: https://spoti.fi/3sTeN2m Find Mike @GenuineChitChat on Twitter, @Genuine_ChitChat on Instagram & /GenuineChitChat on Facebook! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/support
