In honor of Bodhi Day—commemorating the Buddha's awakening—this episode challenges the conventional notion of enlightenment as a distant finish line. Instead, I explore how awakening emerges naturally in the everyday moments of our lives. Drawing on the Buddha's story and reflecting on personal experiences, I'll discuss how to recognize the sacredness of ordinary life, embrace change with grace, and deepen our responsibility for our own happiness. Join me as we discover that enlightenment isn't something to chase, but something to live—right here, right now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jody Hojin Kimmel, Sensei - ZCNYC - 12/08/24 - Today is Bodhi Day, the commemoration of the enlightenment of Siddhartha; a day in which the possibility of not just spinning in confusion, reactivity and fathomless separation is celebrated. Hear about Siddhartha's resolve to discover the root of why we suffer and the nature of existence. Hear about the key figures who supported him at crucial moments on a path without which he most likely would not have made it to Buddhahood. Who has been significant in our journey? We are able to receive training and practice the Dharma today from what he realized. We all walk alone in one sense and together in every way.
While sitting under the bodhi tree through the night, Shakyamuni Buddha saw the morning star, was enlightened and said:I, together with the great earth and all sentient beings, simultaneously attain the way.In the Zen tradition today is Bodhi day. The day that we commemorate the Buddha's awakening and celebrate our buddha nature. Last night, locally, people from the Zen Columbus Sangha, Mud Lotus Sangha and Grove City Zen held a meditation vigil and sat into the dark of the night at the Pragmatic Buddhist Center. It was moving to join together across local sanghas here in Columbus, and sit with so many other practitioners across the globe.I've been reflecting on the Buddha's life this week, the story I keep coming back to is when in the midst of exhaustion he has this memory from childhood arise of sitting in contentment and ease under the shade of a rose apple tree watching the plowing of the golden grain. Here's an excerpt from the Pali Cannon.I thought: 'I recall once, when my father the Sakyan was working, and I was sitting in the cool shade of a rose-apple tree, then — quite withdrawn from sensuality, withdrawn from unskillful mental qualities — I entered & remained in the first jhana: rapture & pleasure born from withdrawal, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. Could that be the path to Awakening?' Then, following on that memory, came the realization: 'That is the path to Awakening.' I thought: 'So why am I afraid of that pleasure that has nothing to do with sensuality, nothing to do with unskillful mental qualities?' I thought: 'I am no longer afraid of that pleasure that has nothing to do with sensuality, nothing to do with unskillful mental qualities, but it is not easy to achieve that pleasure with a body so extremely emaciated. Suppose I were to take some solid food: some rice & porridge.' So I took some solid food: some rice & porridge. Now five monks had been attending on me, thinking, 'If Gotama, our contemplative, achieves some higher state, he will tell us.' But when they saw me taking some solid food — some rice & porridge — they were disgusted and left me, thinking, 'Gotama the contemplative is living luxuriously. He has abandoned his exertion and is backsliding into abundance.'I love the reflection, could this be the path to awakening, this is the path to awakening. My teacher used to quote the bible saying, that to enter the kingdom of heaven, one must become like a child. Is it possible, that recovering something basic that we all knew as children is the path to awakening? To reclaim wonderment, to reconnect with innocence, to allow that innate curiosity and joy of just being you, alive together with the world.Today, on Bodhi Day, I wish that for us.…I'm Amy Kisei. In this special "best of" episode, we celebrate Bodhi Day, the traditional celebration of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni's enlightenment. Yet, listen as we discover how it is a celebration of our enlightenment, too. The message of the December darkness is a messenger of our own enlightenment. Without darkness, we couldn't know light. Shakyamuni's enlightenment experience is ours. He proclaimed, "I and the great earth, and all beings are naturally and simultaneously awakened." We don't chase the darkness away through external ritual or stringing lights, but by looking inside to find our own light. ****************** Support the podcast through the affiliate link to buy the book, Everyday Buddhism: Real-Life Buddhist Teachings & Practices for Real Change: Buy the book, "Everyday Buddhism" Check out my Substack posts for more everyday Buddhism: https://wendyshinyohaylett.substack.com/ If this podcast has helped you understand Buddhism or help in your everyday life, consider making a one-time donation here: https://donorbox.org/podcast-donations Become a patron to support this podcast and get special member benefits! https://www.patreon.com/EverydayBuddhism Or say "Hi, I enjoy your podcast by buying me a coffee!" This morning when I woke up to meditate, 10 days after completing a 10-day Vipassana course, my app told me that it's Bodhi Day. According to Buddhists this day celebrates the day that the Buddha became enlightened whilst sitting under the Bodhi Tree (the tree of awakening). It's also a Gemini Full Moon today - the sign closely associated with the beginner's mind, opposite the Sun in Sagittarius, the sign of Spiritual Discipline. And so, as we float along this river of synchronicities together, episode 33 of the podcast is a conversation with Passi. Passi is a man from Delhi, India, who has sat in 29 Vipassana courses ranging from 10 to 30 days in length. He has also served on a further 13 courses. He's now preparing himself to sit for 45 days on January 1st. We discuss the practice of Vipassana Mediation, how it entered his life (at the end of a decade of Silicon Valley life and in the midst of his arranged marriage troubles), and in what ways and on what levels it has impacted his way of being in the world. Enjoy! And a happy Bodhi Day to all. Music by Marlia Coeur on Spotify. Please consider becoming a Patron to support the show!Go to OnTheSoulsTerms.com for more.

In this episode, we celebrate the Winter Solstice, Bodhi Day, and the light of the Buddha's Promise, meaning our enlightenment, too. The message of the December darkness is a messenger of our own enlightenment. As Bhikkhu Bodhi wrote, "having discovered for himself the perfect peace of liberation, he kindles for us the light of knowledge, which reveals both the truths that we must see for ourselves and the path of practice that culminates in this liberating vision." We don't chase the darkness away through external ritual or stringing lights, but by looking inside to find our own light.

December 8 was Bodhi Day, the celebration of Buddha's Enlightenment. In this talk, which brings a weekend sesshin to a close, Zuisei speaks of the Buddha's life of practice and realization, focusing specifically on the aspiration, courage and determination that supported his vow to awaken. Most importantly, she links his aspiration to our own, stressing the point that we have everything that the Buddha had, which means that we too can awaken; we too can reach “the Unbinding.” The Buddha may have had to walk the path on his own, but we have his inimitable example, which can always be a source of inspiration.
The Buddha was once asked, "Are you a god?" And he answered, "I am awake." In this talk, Sensei Morris Doshin Sullivan discusses how a human being just like us became the awakened one, and what it means to us and our spiritual lives. This talk was given a few days before Bodhi Day, 2021. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/morris-sullivan/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morris-sullivan/support

The Mahayana Buddhist holiday of "Bodhi Day" celebrates the Buddha's enlightenment. Bodhi, meaning awakened or enlightened, is the goal of all Buddhists so they can emulate what the Buddha achieved: cutting through delusion and ignorance, realizing the truth, becoming enlightened (Bodhi), blowing out the three fires of greed, anger, and delusion, which then allows us to reside in our true, peaceful, calm, natural state of Nirvana. Learn how we celebrate this holiday from a Western perspective to including how to repurpose a Christmas tree and lights into a "Bodhi Tree"! Upon his awakening, looking up at the morning star, Siddhartha said, “All things and I awaken together.” Our Guanyin Sutra says we are born with awakening and we grow with awakening. We take up a koan and find shining forth in our very lives now, intimately, the awakening experience of the person in the original koan encounter. Rev. Jon Turner speaks about what it is to be a Buddha. December 8th is Bodhi Day: the day during when Siddhartha Gautama (the historical Buddha) realized Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya at age 35. This date is known as "Nirvana Day" and marks the beginning of his 45 years of teaching the Dharma to the masses.
Thoughts on Talks: Deep Dives and Digressions is a new series from Rev. Mike and his co-host, Malayna Dawn, where they explore tangents and explore ideas from the Sunday Service talks at CSLGH. In episode 1, they digress from the Dec 1, 2019 talk entitled "Science of Mind and Rohatsu" a Japanese word for Bodhi Day -- the day celebrating Siddharta Gautama's enlightenment, and how light connects us all at any holiday season. Their digressions take them to explore Vesak in Sri Lanka, and they share a video in which Bodhi Day is explained by children.

/*What does Dongshan teach? The dark way, the bird path, and the open hand.*/ At the edge of the sea, the rumble and roll of the waters pull on some deep memory of our first, floating home, when we were diaphanous, barely matter, aeons before the empires of thought and industry were built upon the land. Wind pours through the coastal forest, joining the boom of the waves, and the world is a unity of impersonal and completely consoling roar. (Bodhi Day, December 2018)

Join me for a special episode in honor of Bodhi Day, celebrating Shakyamuni Buddha's enlightenment. The long nights of December are marked by numerous celebrations using light as a symbol. Bodhi Day can be adopted as a holiday for your own personal or family "culture." Light symbolizes a rekindling of the spiritual impulse and a turning toward awakening, toward enlightenment. Bodhi Day is a time to celebrate our own awakening to the spirit of our Buddha Nature that is lighting our path with wisdom and embracing us with compassion. Happy Bodhi Day!

Today is Bodhi Day, the day that Shakyamuni Buddha obtained enlightenment. Unlike Buddhist teachings of Shakyamuni's time, Shinran Shonin taught that you can attain enlightenment without the discipline of lifelong meditation or being part of the privileged class. Sensei talks a little about the history of our tradition, the Pureland sect of Buddhism, and how we came to being. Sensei also tells about the historical relationship between the Midwest Buddhist Temple and the Buddhist Temple of Chicago. Another interesting fact is the historical relationship between Nichiren and Shin-Buddhists. This is a must listen for people who are curious about the history of Shin-Buddhism. You can also access an archive of several years of past talks from iTunes. Search for "Midwest Buddhist Temple" in iTunes and you should be able to locate our archive.
