The purpose of the short-lived Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), established in 1937, was to distribute and market power generated by the Columbia River's Bonneville Dam. Supporters anticipated that it would soon be superseded by an organization dedicated to comprehensive planning, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority. Both the repeated attempts to create a Columbia Valley Authority and the subsequent attempts to demolish BPA were unsuccessful. The organization encouraged consumers to use electricity liberally while selling it at absurdly low costs. In an attempt to meet the demand it had helped create, it encouraged the building of further dams. Later, when the river was almost completely blocked, it placed a disastrous multibillion-dollar wager on nuclear power. It was forced to save energy and restore fish runs that the dams had destroyed by congressional mandates in the 1980s.Listen now to learn more about this controversial venture in the Evergreen State and beyond!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

Commercial fishermen and longtime friends Paul Blaylock and Geoff Hylton join me for a wild podcast where we discuss the many factors involved with living in the Pacific Northwest and working in the Natural Resources industry. We talk about the many obstacles facing the Pacific Salmon fisheries, explain some common misconceptions, and provide our best ideas for how to fix everything. We also clear up misconceptions about the aliens that are often called "The Grays" and their support of local salmon fisheries. As fishermen and local residents, these young men have a uniquely privileged perspective into the world of fishing and fish management. It is very interesting to hear their opinions and the ways that they can clash with the common narrative. We also talk about: Fish Hatcheries, what are they? Do they work? After an extended visit in the beautiful town of St. Helens, Oregon, I ended up having to switch gears due to excessive flooding and debris and bicycled 75 miles through Portland to the town of Cascade Locks just above the Bonneville Dam. This ultimately ended up being a blessing in disguise as I was able to explore Portland, Oregon much more extensively on a bicycle as well as riding high up on the bluffs overlooking the beginnings of the Columbia River Gorge. This will be the next chapter of paddling after weeks on the tidal, lower river.  The people on this journey so far have been amazing. I was fortunate to have made some incredible friends in St. Helens who lent me a bicycle for my portage and helped with the Portage of my canoe to the Cascade Locks Marina.    From here I started paddling again towards Hood River through the Columbia River Gorge, which is one of the consistently windiest places in the world and is known for its world class Kite boarding and wind sport activities. Due to this, I have to be very careful in an open expedition canoe how and when I am out on the water, but fortunately westerly winds often significantly help me with paddling, along with my canoe kite which has been remarkable in how much speed I can attain in the right conditions.  The following is a conversation with Danielle Katz, a world traveler, source to sea paddling adventurer, and the founder of an NGO called Rivers for Change which enhances the medium of source to sea river adventures to advocate for wilderness conservation and ecosystem revitalization efforts. I met her and the crew of kayakers she has been supporting in Hood River. They have made their way paddling from the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho and plan to end their journey where I began mine: the mouth of the Columbia River.  It was amazing to meet these kindred souls and have an in depth talk with Danielle about her origins, source to sea adventures, conservation, and perspectives on life. Hope you enjoy and see you all back on the river road.

The United States Navy arrived in the Jim Creek Valley in Snohomish County in late 1953 and began construction on the world's most powerful radio transmitter, which was completed the following year. In its original form, it was designed by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and was capable of transmitting messages instantly to every one of the navy's installations, ships, and aircraft all over the world, including submarines traveling beneath the ocean's surface. Six steel towers on the summit of Blue Mountain and six on Wheeler Mountain to the north were connected by cables with lengths varying from 5,640 to 8,700 feet. The result was a massive dish formed by the zig-zag pattern of ten cables strung between the towers in a zig-zag pattern over the valley. Additional towers that rise from the valley floor provide the necessary support for the cables' midpoint energization through vertical cables carried by these towers. It is powered by a direct transmission line from Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River, and a 2,500-kilowatt Worthington diesel-powered standby generator was constructed in 1957 as a backup power source. Many features of the complex, including the Worthington generator, were determined to be suitable for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. The generator, which has been in service for more than 60 years, was scheduled to be removed and replaced in 2019.Listen now to learn more!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

The families eldest sone, Donald Martin, was in the Navy and stationed in New York during this time. The Martin family decided to take a day trip to gather some Christmas decorations. They were seen getting gas around 4 pm in Cascade Locks. The gas station owner, Dean Baxter, stated he saw the Martin family continue East after filling up their 1954 Ford Country Squire. The family was spotted again at a restaurant about 20 miles from Cascade Locks. This was the last time anyone has seen or heard from the Martin family. It was later reported that two ex convicts were seen leaving the restaurant at the same time as the Martin family. In February 1959 a volunteer searcher found tire tracks leading off of a cliff near The Dalles. The tire tracks that were found were reported to have matched the tires on the Martin family vehicle. On May 3rd Susan Martins body was found in the river near Camas, Washington. This was about 70 miles West of The Dalles where the tire tracks were found. One day later they located Virginia's body near the Bonneville Dam which is roughly 46 miles from The Dalles. In the 1800’s over 10 million salmon would return to the Columbia River that borders Washington and Oregon. Today that number is closer to two million. Many factors account for this change including lower water quality, a warmer climate and sea lions. Hundreds of sea lions gather at the base of the Bonneville Dam eating salmon that are trying to make their way up river to spawn. Humans are going to great lengths to scare off the sea lions in hopes of preserving the salmon run. Chris examines the tensions between man and animal, telling the story from the point of view of the sea lion.

All Selling Aside with Alex Mandossian |

Henry J. Kaiser isn’t talked about in modern business books, the way Elon Musk, Sir Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, and J.K. Rowling are. In fact, many (even most) people have never heard of him. This remarkable man, however, deserves acknowledgement and recognition for the incredible things that he accomplished during his lifetime. He was a larger-than-life man with big ideas who created industries that have yet to be matched in any American business endeavor. Henry’s building career began in 1914 with a road construction project in British Columbia. By 1930, he had completed several highway projects in California and Cuba. As his career progressed, he had many incredible accomplishments: He led the contracting consortium commission to build the Hoover Dam, which was completed two years early under his powerful leadership. Kaiser also led the construction of the Bonneville Dam and the Grand Coulee Dam. During World War II, Kaiser’s Pacific Coast shipyards built the famous Liberty Ships, which Winston Churchill credited as the main reason that the tides were turned in the Pacific Theatre. Henry went into the automobile business, and his corporation became the fourth-largest car-maker in the United States. It also kicked off the car industry in Argentina and Brazil. This remarkable man also went into home construction, building thousands of homes in California and Hawaii. Perhaps Henry’s most remarkable achievement involves medical care and hospitals. He created a health maintenance organization (or HMO) for his shipyard employees; today, it’s a major healthcare system servicing almost 12 million people. Isn’t it incredible that he accomplished so much, and across such dramatically different fields? Tune into the episode to learn about how being a “happy elephant” helped him accomplish these remarkable feats. You’ll also discover the relationship between Kaiser’s success and today’s Alexism: “The cost of doing the same thing without getting different results is higher than the risk of making change.” Finally, I’ll explore these three key insights: Why vision is not about the past or present; it’s about the future. How to transform big ideas into profitable, innovative achievements. How success parlays more success utilizing relationship capital. In This Episode: [03:05] - Alex lists the three main insights into becoming a highly skilled ethical influencer that he’ll cover in today’s episode. [04:16] - We hear about the life and accomplishments of Henry J. Kaiser, a larger-than-life entrepreneur who was all about the future. [08:21] - How did Henry Kaiser do so much in one lifetime across so many different industries? [09:35] - The Alexism for this episode is this: “The cost of doing the same thing without getting different results is higher than the risk of making change.” [11:31] - There are three types of fear. The first is the fear of trying (or being embarrassed in public). [13:11] - The second type of fear is the the fear of failing despite making your best efforts. [13:38] - The first two fears don’t even hold a candle to the third fear: the fear of being wildly successful and no longer relying on excuses. [16:16] - Alex digs into the principle of parlaying, and talks about how it relates to Henry Kaiser’s success. [18:45] - How can you apply all of this into your everyday work, rituals, and routines? [19:28] - We hear a quick recap of the main points and key insights that Alex has explored in today’s episode. [21:12] - Alex talks about why Dr. Robert Cialdini originally wrote his book Influence for the consumer. [23:37] - Please take a moment to write down your biggest takeaway from this episode. He singularly changed the landscape of a large portion of America with the Hoover Dam, Grand Coulee and Bonneville Dam as well as roads in Washington State, Cuba and Hawaii. Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk have a long way to go to be close to the diversity of interests, success or enduring legacy that Henry J. Kaiser left on America. Henry J’s legacy as the founder of Kaiser Permanente should be seen as his most significant achievement.  With Dr. Sydney Garfield, he created an enduring legacy with a method and practice of care that has stood the test of time and offers a series of significant lessons that can help America define part of its healthcare future. New Helicopter Flight Models from Hovercontrol Helicopter Total Realism ver. 1.0 - HTR is a physics library that replaces FSX helicopter physics. You can create your own configuration files for your favorite helicopters. Helicopter Total Realism (HTR) is a program that overrides FSX FS9 flight model with a more realistic model. All the helicopter reactions are calculated using formulas taken from different aerodynamic books. Every helicopter can be configured using a .cfg file similar to the aircraft.cfg but with custom parameters used by the application to model the physics profile. I have included a full manual with samples on how to create your own configurations. Data is passed to and from FS using FSUIPC, so it works on FSX and FS9. Original Story... I've been simming since the days of FS98 but generally I've always been running behind in terms of hardware - low budget and lack of research on my part to blame. This time I've commited to get a decent spec geared entirely around FSX, but it will also run other applications as it will be a main computer. My current Core 2 Duo at 2.4Ghz and 2gb ram fails miserably and even at base settings with sparse terrain I get un-flyable frame rates. So what is the best way to tackle this? Perhaps I could fire a few questions at you guys?   1. Core i7 or Quad (Q9650 e.g)? 2. Does FSX benefit from the "8" cores of the i7? 3. I don't want to overclock as I don't know how so what speed should I look for? 4. What RAM? I intend to run Windows 7 64 bit, does this benefit FSX? If not which OS? 5. Which graphics card? I read somewhere that nVidia seem to work best. 6. I know little to nothing about motherboards. Do they actually make a difference in terms of visual performance if all other elements are kept the same? Incidentally, I learned to fly (back in '92) before I owned a PC but since since FS9 and latterly FSX I'm amazed at the levels of realism being replicated. Thanks guys, much obliged. Regards, Dan St. Barts Landing with Fly Tampa scenery Hey Guy's, I just wanted to share with you my first attemt at making a video. I've been putting this off a long time always afraid it would just be to hard and require a lot of expensive equipment. But I discovered it's really not that hard. I downloaded the free version of Frapps, and used the built in Windows Live Moviemaker. Since this was a Carribean setting, I chose what I thought was a catchey tune for the background. And was pretty amazed how it turned out. Mabe you can urge some of your viewers / listeners who are putting it off to give it a try. I have attached a link to my video. Thanks and keep up the great work. Phil Raulston ( BigDBlue ) http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=100935443275639&ref=nf
