Hosted on Acast. In this conversation with the Review of Democracy, Ho-fung Hung shares his eye-opening analysis of the internal contradictions and external limitations plaguing China's export-led development model and offers novel insights into the difficulties its political leadership is encountering in challenging US hegemony and extending its global sphere of influence. While acknowledging China's impressive achievements, Hung emphasizes China's technological dependency and chronic industrial overcapacity, the impact of the rise of protectionism, the hegemony of the US dollar, and China's lack of confidence in its military capabilities. At the same time, he forecasts the intensification of US-Chinese rivalry in connection with the gradual decoupling of the US and Chinese economies.   Ho-fung Hung is Henry M. and Elizabeth P. Wiesenfeld Professor in Political Economy at the Sociology Department of the Johns Hopkins University. His scholarly interests include global political economy, protest, nation-state formation, social theory, and East Asian Development. He is the author of the award-winning Protest with Chinese Characteristics (2011, Columbia UP), The China Boom: Why China Will not Rule the World (2016, Columbia UP) and the Clash of Empires: From “Chimerica” to the “New Cold War” (2022, Cambridge UP).

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibition is now the standard of care for metastatic breast cancer harboring a germline BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, and studies continue to investigate PARP inhibitors as monotherapies or in rational combinations. Most recently, exciting results have revealed a potential role for PARP inhibitor therapy in earlier disease settings where there is a possibility for cure, heralding a new era of targeted therapy for patients with breast cancer. In order to maximize the benefits of these advances, it is crucial for the multidisciplinary breast cancer care team to keep current with the latest data and expert recommendations to effectively integrate PARP inhibitor therapy into clinical practice, as well as genetic counseling and biomarker testing to refine individualized therapy selection. This PeerView educational activity, based on a recent live event, provides essential information on the biologic rationale for targeting PARP, the latest data and their practical implications, guidance for optimizing biomarker testing, and strategies for improving multidisciplinary collaboration so that patients with breast cancer can make the most of the recent advances with PARP inhibitor therapy. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Describe DNA damage response (DDR) pathways and the rationale for therapeutic targeting of DDR with PARP inhibitors in early and advanced breast cancer, Identify patients with breast cancer who might benefit from treatment with PARP inhibitors based on current evidence and best practices for biomarker testing, Integrate PARP inhibitors into evidence-based, individualized treatment plans for eligible patients with early and advanced breast cancer considering latest efficacy and safety data in the context of clinical practice or clinical trials, Manage treatment-related adverse events in patients receiving PARP inhibitors for breast cancer treatment.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is known as an aggressive, rapidly progressing, and challenging thoracic malignancy. After lacking progress for decades, recent advances have finally led to approvals of new therapies that can improve outcomes and quality of life of patients with SCLC. Chemoimmunotherapy has become the new standard of care in the first-line setting, a novel transcription inhibitor has expanded very limited options in the second-line setting, and many ongoing trials and innovative approaches are anticipated to further escalate progress in this challenging subtype of lung cancer. These developments have also provided new hope to patients with SCLC, which makes it important to ensure that all patients have access to these therapies and have the opportunity to benefit from them, as well as being encouraged to consider clinical trial participation. This activity focuses on evidence and practical guidance to help clinicians make the most of the latest treatment advances in SCLC. Essential data and best-practice recommendations are framed with cases to illustrate how to integrate the new therapeutic options into clinical practice. Investigational therapies and key ongoing trials are also highlighted to continue to better understand the biology of SCLC and the expanding the treatment options. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Apply the latest efficacy and safety data on novel systemic therapeutic options for SCLC taking into consideration their characteristics, mechanism of action, most recent treatment guidelines, clinical activity, and adverse event profile, Integrate the latest therapies into preferred prescribing protocols and formularies accounting for prior treatment history, duration of chemotherapy-free interval, disease presentation, sites of recurrence, comorbidities, and other treatment- and patient-specific features for patients with SCLC, particularly in the second-line setting, Implement individualized treatment plans for patients with SCLC that leverage team-based approaches to shared decision-making, patient education and counseling, and adverse event management and monitoring.

In addition, they discuss available treatment options, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, and other emerging systemic agents being used as components of multimodal management strategies for TNBC. Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: Describe the biologic rationale, clinical characteristics, and current therapeutic options for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), including immunotherapies and targeted therapies, Apply the most up-to-date safety, efficacy, and biomarker data from clinical trials evaluating established and emerging therapies, including immunotherapies and targeted approaches, in the treatment of patients with TNBC, Integrate optimized and individualized approaches to biomarker testing, immunotherapeutic and targeted treatment selection and sequencing, adverse event monitoring and management, and team-based care into management plans for patients with TNBC.

LAW 2 — CHAPTER 2: The Law of AwarenessYou Must Know Yourself To Grow YourselfLEARN IT“Who Are You?”I. Do You Have A Sense Of Direction? (You have to know who you are)A. Recount the story of Henry M.1. While this is an extreme story, is it possible that many live their lives as if what they just experienced didn't really matter?B. To grow yourself, you must know the following:1. Your Strengths2. Your Weaknesses3. Your Interests4. Your OpportunitiesC. Knowing these four critical areas of your life tells you “Where you are”D. To reach your full potential, you MUST know where you are, and where you want to be.II. There are three kinds of people when it comes to finding direction:A. People who don't know what they would like to do1. They are confusedB. People who know what they want to do, but don't do it.1. They are frustratedC. People who know what they want to do, and do it.1. These people are fulfilled.LIVE IT“Becoming Aware Of Your Own Identity”III. How To Find Your Passion and PurposeA. Discuss the need for personal “awareness”1. What does it mean to be personally aware?Explore these following questions regarding finding your passion and purpose.B. Do you like what you are doing now?1. If you are not enjoying what you do for a living, you need to take some time to explore why?2. Consider this example: If a person sets out to run a mile, and three quarters of a mile ahead there is a cliff, should that person try to finish running the mile just because he started out to do so?a. What is what we are doing right now is simply the wrong direction?3. Changing what you are doing is a risk, but what if you don't change? Which risk would you rather live with?C. What would you like to do?1. This is the question of direct passion.2. There is a definite connection between finding your passion and reaching your potential.a. Discuss the reasons passion helps one reach their potential1. You can't go where you hate going2. Passion gives you an advantage over those who have none.3. Passion gives you energy3. Finding your passion requires listening to your heart. Feelings matter!D. Can you do what you would like to do?1. Dreams are necessary for success. But not every dream is possible due to natural limits.a. Do you know the difference between what you want and what you are good at?b. Do you know what drives you and gives you satisfaction?c. Do you know what your values and priorities are, and what are your organization's values and priorities are?d. What happens when your values and priorities differ with the organization of which you are a part? Are you willing to change yours?2. Discuss this quote by Samuel Johnson: “Almost every man wastes part of his life in attempts to display qualities which he does not possess.”a. What are your unique talents and gifts?E. Do you know why you want to do what you would like to do?This is the Motives question.1. Even good things done with the wrong motive can become a disaster.F. Do you know what to do so you can do what you want to do?This is the “What now?” question1. Awareness – Becoming very conscious of every choice you make.2. Action – The major difference between those who do it and those who don't do it, is those who do it, do it.3. Accountability – This can be shared accountability with a friend or coach, or personal accountabilityG. Do you know people who do what you'd like to do?This is the question of mentors and coaches – do you have one or more?Discuss these “BE” Principles:1. Get Committed – if you have to, pay people for their time and advise2. Be consistent – Meet regularly with someone who can help you.3. Be creative – Learn from people even if you can't meet them.4. Be purposeful – Prepare for every interaction: don't wing it!5. Be reflective – Reflect on each encounter and discover what you are learning6. Be grateful – ALWAYS show appreciation for what you are learning from others. H. Should you do what you would like to do with them?If you find a mentor, you have some responsibilities to this relationship:1. Possess a teachable spirit2. Always be prepared3. Ask questions4. Demonstrate learning from them5. Be accountableIf you are a mentor, you should focus your teaching on the following areas:1. Strengths2. Temperament3. Track Record4. Passion5. Choices6. Advice7. Support and resources8. Feedback9. EncouragementIn the mentoring relationship, it is important for the mentee to explore his/her own learning by observing this process:Here is what I asked you…Here is what I heard you share with me…Here is what I didNow, can I ask your more questions? The goal is to find a mentoring relationship that is mutually beneficial.I. Will you pay the price to do what you want to do?1. Explore this notion: “What will it cost to change? It will cost everything.”2. Read the poetic quote on page 30-31 – Remember, most people are not willing to pay the price for change.J. When can you start doing what you'd like to do?1. Talk about the idea of starting scared and unprepared.2. Ask your group this question: When will you start doing what you want to do? Look at your watch and tell me when it strikes “Someday”?K. What will it be like when you get to do what you want to do?This is the question of defining success1. What does success look like?2. Explore this statement: “The two greatest days in your life are when you are born and the day you discover why.”LEAD IT“When you live this law, you will show others the way and they empower them to learn it and live it too.”IV. Meet the Ingrams – a “typical” American family who documented their journey to become expats living abroad in London, Singapore, and Taiwan. Their new reality TV show, “The Expats International Ingrams,” has been streamed more than 2.3 million times on Amazon Prime, but it wasn't always that way… Series Creator and Producer, Juanita Ingram, sits down with Kristin from her home in Taipei to share her advice (learned the hard way) of overcoming the many challenges of moving to a new country. It took months of “sitting on the couch, eating chips,” before Juanita was able to pull herself out of the “trailing spouse depression” and health challenges she experienced after quitting her job in support her husband's career move to London. Find out her tips for adapting to a new culture and how to relate with locals while managing the stereotype of being an American abroad. You'll also learn about the cost-of-living and housing prices in Taiwan, the cost of local healthcare, safety rankings, top things to see and do, and what to expect in Season 2 of The Expats International Ingrams when they head to Singapore. EPISODE 128 TOPICS DISCUSSED: The #1 reason why executive expats and their families don't succeed at living abroad. How an expat BBQ at Windsor Castle inspired Juanita to create a reality TV show about living abroad.  How The Expats International Ingrams is challenging typical expat stereotypes and why African American women and families are under-represented in the media.  How to deal with major life changes like quitting your job and moving to a new country.  How to adjust to life as a foreigner abroad.  How to cope with depression and feeling lost after moving abroad. How Juanita was able to re-invent herself in her career after changing jobs multiple times.  Moving to Singapore during COVID and the surreal situation of filming of Season 2 of their show there.  Life in Taiwan, how the Taiwanese healthcare system works, and the cost of living. Top travel destinations, excursions, and places to get food in Taiwan. QUESTIONS ANSWERED: Who are The Expats International Ingrams? Why create a TV show about living abroad?  What is "trailing spouse syndrome" or depression and how to overcome it?  What was it like to go on Sky News London as an expat to discuss US policy in front of a British audience?  Why does Taiwan rank #1 for the best places to live abroad?  Are locals in Taiwan worried about an invasion from China? What do you wish people from the US knew about living abroad? And much more! RESOURCES Do you want to move abroad in the next year?
