Magician, Swiss Watchmaker, Aloof, Elegant, Precise, Soulful, Childlike, Naive, Warm: these are all words that have been used to describe Maurice Ravel, a man of elegant contradictions. But perhaps these contradictions are why his music remains so beloved and universally appealing to so many musicians and audience members. Ravel has long been one of my favorite composers, and I always adore listening to his music and performing it. For the 150th anniversary of his birth, the legendary publishing house of G Henle has decided to focus on Ravel and his circle this year, calling this series Ravel and Friends. A few months ago, the Henle office contacted me to ask if I would be willing to collaborate with them on a series of Sticky Notes episodes about Ravel, each one focusing on the relationship between Ravel and another composer who was in his circle. This sounded like an amazing idea, and so I jumped at the chance to work with them. So, over the course of the next 5-6 months, you will be seeing 5 episodes under the Ravel and Friends theme. Today's episode will be a chance to do an overview on Ravel himself and to take a look at some major works that I haven't gotten around to covering on the show yet. We'll then finish the show with an interview with the great pianist Boris Giltburg, as we discuss the solo piano verison of Ravel's La Valse, one of the most challenging pieces in the entire repertoire. Later episodes will include a look at Ravel's relationships with Debussy, Gershwin, and De Falla, and much more! This is such an exciting chance to take a deeper look at one of the greatest 19th and 20th century composers, as well as take a look at the broader musical and social trends of that era, something I've always been deeply interested in.
The complete piano trios of Dvořák is the topic this week, as Editor Martin Cullingford catches up with pianist Boris Giltburg, violinist Veronika Jarůšková and the cellist Petre Jarůšek, who have just recorded them for Supraphon.
Kate Molleson marks the 150 anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninov's birth. She visits his home in Switzerland - after years of renovation, the beautiful Villa Senar, on the banks of Lake Lucerne, is reopening to the public. This is the peaceful summer residence where Rachmaninov lived in in the 1930s and where he composed the Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini and the Third symphony. Kate is shown around the Villa by its director Andrea Loetscher. They are joined by pianist Boris Giltburg, who is about to release his new Rachmaninov piano concertos disc, and who performs specially for Music Matters on Rachmaninov's original Steinway grand piano in the Villa's studio. Also joining Kate at the Villa is Fiona Maddocks: music critic and author of the upcoming book 'Goodbye Russia: Rachmaninoff in Exile'. Together they discuss Rachmaninov's life, work and his time spent at Villa Senar.

Raymond Bisha presents an overview of Boris Giltburg's project to learn and record all of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, which are now released in a 9-CD box set edition following their inception as critically acclaimed digital releases. The recordings reflect only one facet of Giltburg's gem of an undertaking, in that performances were also filmed and subsequently fleshed out by his extended and informative notes that accompany the albums. Giltburg's personal exploration and Beethoven's panoply of expression unite in a cycle that runs the full gamut of human emotion.

Also, there's beautiful live performances from vocal quintet Papagena, cellist Nicolas Alstead plays Bach and it's an In Tune Highlights return for pianist Boris Giltburg as he embarks on his stunningly ambitious Beethoven 32 project, a ground-breaking Beethoven Sonatas journey to mark 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
The pianist Boris Giltburg is recording Beethoven's five piano concertos for Naxos with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko. The first album is out with the first two piano concertos and the early Rondo, WoO6 from 1793. James Jolly met up with Boris Giltburg after a performance of the First Piano Concerto and the day before the recording sessions.
The internationally respected artists on this release are well known to Naxos followers: pianist Boris Giltburg (whose recordings of Beethoven, Liszt, Schumann and Rachmaninov have been universally acclaimed); and conductor Vasily Petrenko (whose edition of the complete Shostakovich symphonies has been recognised as a historic recording milestone). They come together now in Beethoven’s first two piano concertos with their exuberant energy and abundance of lyric and virtuosic qualities. Raymond Bisha presents.

Franz Liszt was one of music history’s first superstars, whose stunning technique and charismatic stage presence facilitated his development of the solo piano concert format. This release puts his 12 Transcendental Studies centre stage, where they share the spotlight with award-winning pianist Boris Giltburg, an emerging superstar in his own right whose pianism clothes Liszt’s music with impeccable artistry. While many series of studies succeed in developing technique, they are rarely very exciting musically. Liszt’s works, however, embody rich, alluring worlds that can be accessed only by a performer with outstanding technical expertise and penetrating musical vision. Raymond Bisha presents Boris Giltburg’s latest Naxos release.
Raymond Bisha helps turn the pages of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, following the release of Boris Giltburg’s fine performance of the work with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto. Noted for its length and technical difficulty, ‘Rach 3’ (its popular moniker) is reckoned to have more notes than all of Mozart’s piano concertos put together. Boris Giltburg shows how Rachmaninov’s gift as a story-teller in music reaches a high point in the work, unfolding a narrative tapestry equal to that of a great novel.

Your hosts Jean-Jacques van Vlasselaer and Marjolaine Fournier talk about Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77, which will be performed by Guy Braunstein with the NAC Orchestra in January 2018. This work in four movements is technically and emotionally challenging for the soloist. It’s been termed “probing” and “sarcastic” – which may be why it spent time on the shelf after being completed in 1947-48, before seeing the light of day after Stalin’s death in 1953. Jean-Jacques and Marjolaine also talk about Shostakovich’s second piano concerto, which appears in the NAC Orchestra program in March 2018 and sees Russia-born Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg at the keyboard. This work was born after Stalin’s death, and was written for the composer’s 19-year-old son, Maxim, a detail that upholds what some have said was the youthful character of the final movement.
On episode 1.4 we talk to pianist Boris Giltburg about his newest release on Naxos Records, a recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, and about what it's like to be a top-level pianist. Our Deep Cut is the Piano Concerto in G Minor by Croatia's Dora Pejacevic, composed in 1913.
Raymond Bisha introduces Boris Giltburg’s latest album of music by Sergei Rachmaninov that features the Études-tableaux Op. 33 and his ever-popular Piano Concerto No. 2. The latter charts a dramatic course: from the passion, darkness and pain of the first movement, through the dreamy idyll of the second, to the unequivocal victory of the finale. This overview might indeed reflect the path of Rachmaninov’s own life: his depression and inability to continue composing following the disastrous première of his First Symphony (ruined by an apparently drunken Glazunov on the conductor’s podium) and his fight to overcome it with the help of a hypnotherapist, one Dr Dahl, to whom the Second Piano Concerto was dedicated.

Time and again, Dmitri Shostakovich deftly managed to dodge the artistic bullet when it came to the expected political conformity of the day. His two piano concertos bear his distinctive musical voice, despite Soviet diktats. Cheeky banter and effervescence characterise the works, offset by a sublime movement in the second concerto that soloist Boris Giltburg describes as “a rare instance of Shostakovich without a mask.” Giltburg’s own transcription for piano of Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet adds a beautiful bonus to the programme.
