Inside this Episode with host, Mitch Hampton Christoph Schülren, one of the guests to whom I was so kindly introduced by pianist Beth Levin, will be the first time on our podcast that a musician whose professional career is devoted to the art and practice of conducting has been featured.  I thought it indispensable for many reasons to feature him: musical conducting is ubiquitous in many styles of music yet is perhaps little understood or appreciated outside of the worlds of music.  I was most happy with our discussion: he is quite articulate and able to get into the details of his craft in a relatable way to a most general audience and he has quite an intriguing biography as can be gleamed from our episode. Christoph Schlüren's Biography  “Uniting the well-known with the unknown” Conductor, Music Researcher,Musical Mentor, Music Editor, Program Adviser, Chamber Music, Coach  Christoph Schlüren studied with the late Sergiu Celibidache from 1981 to 1996. Other strong influences were the composers Anders Eliasson, Pehr Henrik Nordgren, and Per Nørgård, the musicians Paul Zukofsky, Sándor Végh, Murray Perahia, Juha Kangas, and many more.  As a conductor (Symphonia Momentum, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein, St Michel Strings Mikkeli) Christoph Schlüren led first performances of works by Peter Michael Hamel and Anders Eliasson. Some of the lesser established composers he particularly favors are:Heinz Tiessen, Eduard Erdmann, Anders Eliasson, Jean-Louis Florentz, Paul Büttner, John Foulds, Vittorio Giannini, Nicolas Flagello, Giorgio Federico Ghedini, Peter Mennin, Bernard Stevens, Felix Draeseke, Heinrich Kaminski, Max Butting, Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling , Heinz Schubert, Philipp Jarnach,  Emil Bohnke, Matthijs Vermeulen, Harald Sæverud, Georges Migot, Eduard Tubin, Vagn Holmboe, Douglas Lilburn, Robert Simpson, Per Nørgård, Boris Tishchenko, Ketil Hvoslef, Pehr Henrik Nordgren, Tristan Keuris, Halvor Haug, Peter Michael Hamel, John Pickard, Håkan Larsson, and Juan José Chuquisengo.  He combines their works in dramaturgically correlated programs with the established great composers. Read more about conducting He is a music researcher, author and journalist as well (Frankfurter Rundschau, Gramophone, Tempo, Fono Forum, Crescendo, Neue Musikzeitung, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutschland Radio, etc.) and works as main editor and researcher on the rare music scores series Repertoire Explorer. Christoph Schlüren wrote the first basic introduction into Musical Phenomenology as it was created as a universal approach to music by Sergiu Celibidache developing further on. As a program adviser he collaborates with orchestras and conductors (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Münchner Philharmoniker, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, Arcos Orchestra, Münchener Kammerorchester, etc.; Lavard Skou Larsen, Juha Kangas, José Serebrier , Mario Venzago, Christoph Poppen, Israel Yinon, etc.), and created commissions for the Musica Viva series of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Anders Eliasson's Fourth Symphony, Cynthia Lee Wong, and Onute Narbutaite, as well as arranging the world première of Artur Schnabel's Third Symphony). Read more essays and evaluations Christoph Schlüren works as a musical mentor with soloists and  chamber ensembles (Rebekka  Hartmann, Ottavia Maria Maceratini, David Frühwirth, Masha Dimitrieva, Omar Rahbany, Margarita Oganesjan, etc.). Professor Patricia Wiltshire is a forensic ecologist who specialises in palynology – the study of pollen. Her expertise has led her to work with every police force in Britain and helped solve some of the country's most notorious crimes including the Soham murder case in which two young girls were killed by school caretaker Ian Huntley.Patricia was born in Cefn Fforest, a mining village in the Sirhowy Valley, north of Cardiff. She studied botany at King's College London as a mature student and later worked as an environmental archaeologist, helping to reconstruct ancient environments by analysing the pollen and other remains in the soil.In 1994 Hertfordshire police asked her to help them with a murder case. A man had been found dead in a ditch and the police had tyre tracks and a vehicle and they needed to prove that the car in question had made the tracks. Patricia's analysis of the pollen and spores found in the car helped to convict the killers and started her career as a forensic ecologist. Patricia is married to Professor David Hawksworth, a renowned mycologist, and they sometimes work on criminal investigations together. DISC ONE: Nocturnes, Op. 27: No. 2 in D-Flat Major. He has recorded great orchestras around the world and is known for his recordings of the Mahler Symphonies with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, his work with Baroque and Renaissance ensembles, and piano soloists Murray Perahia and Igor Levit.Andreas begins Part 1 talking about how he first came to work with Michael Tilson Thomas in London and his recordings of the Mahler cycle with the San Francisco Symphony. Using those sessions, Andreas gives an overview of how recordings are made, from the initial shipping of equipment and set-up, how live concerts are recorded, what a patch session is and how they're run (...and how much money each minute of the session costs!) Andreas also mentions some background of recording tech specifics, including how the human mind perceives stereo sound (and the difficulty of implementing 5.1 surround sound in an orchestral setting.) The first stone was laid in 923.Then he went to Colleville-Montgomery – the site of the D-Day landings 79 years ago, which was the turning point in World War Two. At Colleville-Montgomery, Macron met a soldier … and you were to send in the answer to these three questions: what is the soldier's name, how old is he, and what is the name of the regiment in which he served? He was the last living Frenchman to have taken part in the D-Day landings – one of the 177 Frenchmen who landed on 6 June 1944, as part of the Kieffer Commando Unit, alongside 132 thousand Allied Forces.  Sadly, Léon Gautier died just this past Monday, 3 July. Rest in peace, Monsieur Gautier. Synopsis On today's date in 1784, in the city of Vienna, Wolfgang Mozart finished one bit of work and started another—which he would continue until the end of his life. After Mozart put the finishing touches to his Piano Concerto No. 14 in E flat, he entered this work as the first item in a ledger, which he titled, "A List of all my works from the month of February, 1784 to the month of..." Mozart then left a blank space on his title page for the concluding month and wrote just the number "1" in the space left for the concluding year of his catalog—with the reasonable expectation that he would live long enough to see the turn of the new century. He then signed his title page: "Wolfgang Amadé Mozart by my own hand." On the catalog's unruled left-hand pages Mozart wrote the date and description of his subsequent works, and occasionally, in the case of his operas and vocal pieces, the names of the singers who premiered them. The right-hand side of the page was lined with music staves, and here Mozart would write the opening measure of each piece. The very last entry in Mozart's ledger book is dated November 15, 1791, just one month before his death. This final entry notes the completion of a cantata written for Vienna's "New-Crowned Hope" Masonic Lodge. Music Played in Today's Program Wolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 14, K. 415 Murray Perahia, piano and conductor.; English Chamber Orchestra CBS/Sony 415 Freemason Cantata, K. 623 Boston Early Music Festival; Andrew Parrott, conductor. Hello and welcome to the heart of the piano podcast where we are exploring the world of piano. In this episode, I'll be bringing you my experience of the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition, known informally as ‘The Leeds', and exploring some of the wider issues that competition in music brings up. Some of my favourite pianists have been finalists of The Leeds in past years, and in fact the competition was one of the main factors in launching the careers of famous names such as: Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Dmitri Alexeev, Ilya Itin, Artur Pizarro, Kathryn Stott, Noriko Ogawa, Louis Lortie, Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, and many more household names in the world of classical pianists. It seems to come as a huge shock to most people in Leeds that there is a regular local event happening every 3 years that is regarded as one of the most important events in the international world of professional piano- but don't just take my word for it- during the competition I asked some of the competitors why they had entered The Leeds- this is what Alim Beisembayev said who went on to become the winner: Clip And Elizaveta Kliuchereva who was in the semifinals: Clip And Ariel Lanyi who was the 3rd prize winner: Clip And semifinalist Priscilla Navarro: Clip A topic that's bound to come up in a review of a major music competition is about the controversy of whether musicians should take part in competitions and about whether we should take them seriously. There are plenty of people who very rigidly think that competitions for musicians are a very bad thing to be avoided. I personally think they can be a useful challenge for musicians, as long as the challenge is how to be deeply musical under pressure rather than get caught up in being too serious about competition and ego- this is a skill all professional musicians need to learn at some point or another! Ultimately, we can't really say that one amazing musician is better than another one- and personal subjective taste is going to vary enormously. I enjoyed chatting to people sitting near to me at every stage of the competiti...

(Linn)

Another chance to hear Monica Grady, Professor of Planetary and Space Sciences at the Open University, interviewed by Kirsty Young in July 2015. Well-known in scientific circles, at NASA and the European Space Agency, she came to the attention of the general public with her enthusiastic celebration when, as part of the Rosetta project, the probe Philae became the first-ever spacecraft to land on a comet - 67P - in November 2014. The spacecraft had taken ten years to journey through space and a decade was spent on the preparations. She was born in 1958 in Leeds as the eldest of eight children. She studied chemistry and geology at Durham University and did her PhD on carbon in meteorites at Cambridge, where she worked closely with Professor Colin Pillinger on the Beagle 2 project to Mars. She first worked at the OU in 1983 before joining the Department of Mineralogy of the Natural History Museum, becoming Head of the Meteorites and Cosmic Mineralogy Division. She is married to Professor Ian Wright who is one of the lead scientists on the Rosetta cometary mission and they have one son. She was awarded a CBE in 2012 for services to space sciences and asteroid (4731) was named "Monicagrady" in her honour. Birgitta Tollan gör självsvåldiga nedslag i musiklivet i sex städer: Reykjavik, New York, Oslo, Helsingfors, Berlin och Köpenhamn. Låtlista: Untitled In CoF Minor A Valentine To Sherwood Anderson Mikhail/Gertrude Stein Mikhail. This free-ranging conversation between one of the world’s greatest pianists Murray Perahia and the renowned Chopin scholar John Rink will explore some of the reasons why Chopin’s music continues to have such a hold over musicians and listeners alike. They will begin by discussing a musical depiction of the composer by one of his contemporaries, after which they will turn to some of the principal genres in which Chopin worked, including the Etudes and Nocturnes. Issues of technique and interpretation will be broached along the way. The conversation will also focus on Chopin’s own playing as well as the approaches of legendary pianists over the ages. It will end with an investigation of two large- scale pieces which pose particular conceptual as well as technical challenges. Passages from the repertoire will be illustrated at the piano by Mr Perahia throughout the conversation, laced with spirited commentary and debate. John Rink is Professor of Musical Performance Studies in the Cambridge Faculty of Music. He has published extensively on Chopin’s music and its performance history.

Much of his commentary will focus in addition on the reflections of these composers on their own music and on the works of others.
