William Boyd is the author of eighteen novels, five short story collections and numerous screenplays. His first published novel, A Good Man in Africa, was inspired by his childhood in West Africa. He is well known for writing ‘whole life' novels including Any Human Heart which he adapted as a BAFTA-winning television series. He was born in Accra in Ghana where his Scottish father worked as a doctor, specialising in tropical medicine. In 1964 the family moved to Ibadan, Nigeria where he witnessed the Nigerian Civil War – the Biafran War – which had a profound effect on him both personally and professionally.He read English Literature and Philosophy at the University of Glasgow and became a lecturer in English at St Hilda's College, Oxford. During this period he wrote novels and short stories on the side until his breakthrough novel, A Good Man in Africa, was published in 1981. Fredrik Ekdahl is leader of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's bassoon section and held the same position in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with orchestras including London Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. New works have also been composed especially for Ekdahl, such as Jesper Nordin's bassoon concerto, Vicinities. Fredrik Ekdahl is a dedicated chamber musician and regularly performs in festivals all over the world. He has collaborated with world-class musicians such as violinist Janine Jansen and clarinettist Martin Fröst. French-German cellist Nicolas Altstaedt is one of the most sought after and versatile musicians today, performing repertoire spanning early music to the contemporary, as a soloist, conductor and artistic director. He's performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic, to name only a few. Alexandra Knight is the founder and CEO of classical music agency Knight Classical. After reading Music and then Law at Oxford University, Alexandra joined the artist management world, working first at Harrison Parrott, then at International Classical Artists - where she later became a Director at the age of 28 - before launching Knight Classical in January 2020. In her career so far, Alexandra has worked for renowned artists such as Janine Jansen, Neeme Järvi and Sir James Galway; built swiftly rising careers for artists including Alena Baeva and Joseph Bastian; and signed young prize-winning talents such as Anna Tsybuleva, amongst others.In this episode, Alexandra talks about the role of an artist manager, and how the manager-artist partnership is much like a marriage; she reflects on the moment she realised she'd taken her first client from day one through to their debut with the New York Philharmonic; and she shares some thoughts on the psychological models that can often be found in high-level performers. Als het aan de grote winnaar (PVV) van de verkiezingen ligt, worden alle subsidies voor de culturele sector stopgezet. Ook het voornemen van de VVD om de btw. verhoging naar 21% op ticketprijzen door te voeren baart veel zorgen. We gaan in de rubriek “nu even serieus” zo dicht mogelijk naar het vuur met niemand minder dan de voorzitter van de Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal dhr. Jan Anthonie Bruijn.
