SynopsisOn today's date in 1932, an all-Maurice Ravel concert was given in Paris by the Lamoureux Orchestra at the Salle Erard. Ravel was on hand, conducting some of his works, including the premiere of his new Piano Concerto in G with pianist Marguerite Long the soloist. The critics were enthusiastic about the music, but less so about Ravel's conducting skills.“Once again,” one wrote, “I wish to protest against the habit, more and more frequently indulged in, of attempting at all costs to bring a composer before the public in a part which he is incapable of filling. Monsieur Ravel is continually brought out as a pianist or as a conductor, whilst he cannot shine in either of these two specialties. ... His Pavane was unutterably slow, his Bolero dry and badly timed, and the accompaniment of the concerto lacked clarity and elasticity. ... But there can only be praise for the composer of all these delicate, subtle works, the orchestration of which abounds in amusing and profound inventions. ... The new concerto,” the review concludes, “is worthy of the other masterpieces we owe to Ravel.”Music Played in Today's ProgramMaurice Ravel (1875-1937) Piano Concerto in G; Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano; Montréal Symphony; Charles Dutoit, cond. This week's guest is an Emmy winner, a Grammy winner, and a nine-time Oscar nominee, whose scores have graced the big and small screens since the 1980s. James Newton Howard is the voice of many of your favorite scores, from co-scoring the Dark Knight Trilogy with Hans Zimmer to his Oscar-nominated score for Paul Greengrass' News of the World. Now, he's back with several new projects, some of which hearken back to music he has written in the past.   Howard's latest solo album, Night After Night, is a beautiful look back at his eight-film partnership with filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, recontextualizing some of his most intriguing melodies from that longtime collaboration into piano-driven suites performed by virtuoso musicians, including concert pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.   On the small screen, Howard recently completed a lush, yearning score for Netflix's new miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, based on the acclaimed novel by Anthony Doerr and directed by Shawn Levy. Plus, after nearly a decade away from Panem, Howard resumes his collaboration with director Francis Lawrence for the Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Now, Howard is here on the pod to talk about all of these projects and more.   You can find James Newton Howard at his official website here.   Night After Night is currently available on vinyl or your preferred streaming service, courtesy of Sony Masterworks.  Same with All the Light You Cannot See, courtesy of Netflix Music, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, care of Sony Music.

New Classical Tracks - James Newton Howard by James Newton Howard – Night After Night (Sony Classical), featuring pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Hilary Hahn and cellist Maya Beiser“I've been so lucky,” composer James Newton Howard says. “I've done over 140 movies at this point. Things for television, record and producing. I've been so lucky to get all these ideas writing concert music. I may have checked all the boxes that go on a bucket list with music, and I just want to keep going. I guess that's my bucket list: It's to have remaining and continuing passion for what I do.”Newton Howard is a composer and pianist who made a name for himself in the late ‘70s by touring with and orchestrating for Elton John. He made his way into film score composition at a time when the field was wide open. He's scored more than 140 movies, from Pretty Woman to the Hunger Games franchise. His latest passion project features eight suites from all the films he's scored for M. Night Shyamalan, a director known for his emotional thrillers. How would you describe your signature style?“Strong melody is part of my signature. But I think also, and I say this with tremendous humility — although it may not sound like humility — that I'm very versatile. I think I've done a lot of successful romantic comedies, from Pretty Woman to My Best Friend's Wedding to Dave and all that. So when you do that, you become the ‘rom-com' guy. And then I did The Fugitive, and I became the action guy. I suppose the clearest thing that I get back from people is my more emotional interior music.”In an interview that you did a few years ago you admitted to being a little arrogant on occasion early in your career, and then you said you became a good listener. What happened that allowed you to become a good listener?“Yeah, I was arrogant because I was always coming up with ideas and then I was just running into situations where I was getting a lot of rewriting requests from the director. And some of the rewrites that were getting made were really good ideas. And then it just occurred to me that the director might actually have important things to say to me. I'm much more collaborative now, and that's really the nature of the game; it's all down to being part of a team.”You've collaborated with director M. Night Shyamalan on at least eight films, and you've now taken music from those films and turned them into suites.“Night makes films that are about things that really interest me, such as revelation, catharsis, love, courage and triumph. There's always an element of these very strong emotions. That's what really appealed to me. But, surprisingly, all these ideas and feelings took place in movies that were somewhat creepy. But then there's a very emotional core to it. I had never encountered that before.“And so, I took the scores, I took out all the scary bits and made it quite meditative. I got Jean-Yves Thibaudet to play the piano on every track. Hilary Hahn came in and revisited my score for The Village and played the beautiful violin solos throughout that piece.“But what I love about Night was the closeness of our collaboration and his appreciation for what I was doing. We just ended up having this connection from the very beginning where I felt challenged and I felt inspired and he felt inspired, and we worked so closely together that it just was kind of a dream relationship.” Listen on YouTubeTo hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.ResourcesJames Newton Howard – Night After Night (Amazon)James Newton Howard – Night After Night (Sony Classical)James Newton Howard (official site) Related Items Listen: Acclaimed classical pianist surprises with Elton John

Synopsis The Russian émigré composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff was himself the soloist on today's date in 1927 in the first performance of his Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Rachmaninoff had premiered his Third Concerto in New York in 1909, and he'd been thinking about writing another one for over a decade. In the meantime, his life had been disrupted by both the Russian Revolution and the exhausting business of earning a living as a touring virtuoso pianist. In 1926, Rachmaninoff finally felt he could afford to take some time off and put a Fourth Piano Concerto down on paper. In its original form, it turned out to be a much longer work than even Rachmaninoff thought practical. He joked to a friend that its movements would have to be "performed on successive nights, like Wagner's Ring operas." Rachmaninoff made a number of cuts before the Philadelphia premiere, but even so, the new work was not well received, and so Rachmaninoff kept cutting. Audiences and critics still remained cool, and Rachmaninoff eventually shelved the work for a time—quite a time. In 1941 he prepared a "final cut" version, which ended up considerably shorter than his other three Piano Concertos, and recorded it with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. To mark a milestone birthday and celebrate a new chapter in his relationship with the label, French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet was given “carte blanche” by the Decca classical label to choose personal music that he has never recorded before—a selection that reflects on the people and pieces that have impacted his life as an artist while expanding his already diverse repertoire in new directions. Mr. Thibaudet's choices on his disc each have a unique story, and he shares the best with host John Pitman in the recorded conversation, which includes brief musical samples. Some pieces were specially arranged for the pianist, such as “Pride and Prejudice” by Dario Marianelli; others arranged by Thibaudet's teachers (Elgar's Salut d'amour one example); and still others were arranged by the pianist himself, including an astounding piano version of Barber's Adagio. Thibaudet's recording is as much a gift to us as it is to himself and will enhance playlists for years to come.

Jean-Yves Thibaudet – Carte Blanche (Decca) Jump to giveaway form French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet celebrated his 60th birthday with a trip to Hawaii in September. He also marked the occasion with the release of his new recording, Carte Blanche. “This was an album where I was given literally carte blanche,” Thibaudet said. “I could choose whatever. It might not have happened without the pandemic, and I did it with the greatest love and joy. I had such a good time doing it. The variety and choice of pieces on this album shows my personality.” The recording opens with the suite from Pride and Prejudice, and it features important moments. How did you decide which ones to highlight? “This is something I did with Dario Marianelli. He is an extraordinary composer, and that score is very important and special in my life. That is why I wanted it not only to be on the record, but also start it. “That piece has opened many doors in my life. It has reached so many people in the world, and I cannot tell you how many people still go to my concerts because of it. I also have people coming to me at the end of the concert to say hi and tell me that that was their first concert. They would say, ‘I just came because I saw your name and your the guy from Pride and Prejudice. I love that score so much.'” Why did you choose The Lady and the Nightingale, by Enrique Granados, to honor Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha? “She owned that repertoire completely. It's such beautiful music. The chords are so wonderful. I love the effects of trills mimicking birds. I think it's really beautiful and fun to play. I had to do something from Larrocha because I have such great admiration for her.” Did you dedicate a piece to Renée Fleming? “My playing is in honor of her, because I've learned so much as a an artist from Fleming. It has been the greatest lesson playing with all the other wonderful singers. She has beautiful control of breathing, the legato and of phrasing. “There is a little story to one of the pieces — my transcription of ‘When You Wish Upon a Star' from Disney's Pinocchio. We actually did a PBS program for New Year's Eve, United in Song: The Resilience of American People. She chose to do ‘When You Wish Upon a Star,' which has the most touching and beautiful theme. “I just adore that piece so much. I was thinking, ‘God, I need to play it just for my own pleasure.' I started incorporating, yet again, the singing line into the piano. I was making progress and I finally came up with the arrangement on this album. It gave me so much joy that I wanted to share it, and that certainly is a special gift for Fleming.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. French born pianist Jean Yves Thibaudet has performed in Pittsburgh in at least three visits with Mariss Jansons, Charles Dutoit and Marek Janowsky.   He was scheduled for a return when the pandemic hit but promises to back soon. Fom his home in LA, he spoke with Jim Cunningham about his new cd Carte Blanche with 24 tracks of very personal favorites, arrangements, encores, music from the film score for Pride and Prejudice, Pierre Sancan, Morton Gould, Chopin, Couperin.  He's done 50 cds for Decca, so the company said you've got Carte Blanche to record what you like and he went to work just this past May at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. Renee Fleming interviewed Jean Yves for the notes and he discusses their work together on a PBS special broadcast just this past New Year's Eve 2020.  Jean Yves has a special memory of playing an encore for Mariss Jansons and he had to include something for his Mom on the play list.

Ep 5: Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt - Violist of the Dover Quartet

So This Is My Why

Being in a quartet is like being in a marriage, says Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, violist and founding member of the world renowned award-winning Dover Quartet & our guest for Episode 5 of the So This Is My Why Podcast. Holding dual citizenship in the US and the Netherlands, Milena considers herself to have grown up “a little bit of everywhere” including in Oxford (UK), Baltimore and Jacksonville. Her father taught her the piano before, feeling fed up with the instrument, she chose the violin as her next musical endeavour. An instrument she picked up after hearing a musician busk on the streets of Oxford. At the age of 10 years old, having moved back to Jacksonville by then, she picked up the trombone and also (eagerly!) volunteered to play the viola when her younger brother wanted to form a quartet. We explore all that including a pivotal moment in the summer of 2005, where she met and learned from Michael Klotz, violist of Amernet Quartet & her first viola teacher, at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. A meeting that resulted in her “ sudden immersion in the viola world ”. *Curtis Institute of Music* We also discuss the considerations she had in place when applying for music schools and how she dropped all other applications the moment she got into her dream school - the Curtis Institute of Music! There, she studied with the likes of Michael Tree (of the Guarneri Quartet) & Roberto Diaz (President & CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music). It was also at Curtis that the members of what would be the Dover Quartet came together - not unlike the tentative start of a budding relationship! They bonded so well, one of their teachers, Shmuel Ashkenasi (Vermeer Quartet) asked them, “Have you considered getting married (to each other)?” because you're always together. To which Milena said: We could not have been more giddy than when he said that to us because we had looked up to him so much and he notoriously is one of the most demanding coaches we've ever had. And so to get that kind of encouragement from someone we looked up to… I think that definitely had a huge thing to do with our morale and decision to be kind of brave enough to commit to one another. From there, they decided to show “commitment” to each other by attending the graduate residency program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music as a quartet. *Realities of Life As a String Quartet Member* The life of a string quartet member is so very unique & some of the things we explore include: * What is your schedule like as a string quartet? How often are you on the road? * What was it like participating in competitions (e.g. Fischoff Competition) and in particular, your memories of those incredible wins at the Banff Competition 2013 which launched the Dover Quartet into the spotlight? * Importance of competitions to the careers of string quartets * Ways of dealing with disagreements between quartet members, particularly in musical interpretations of pieces * Managing personal space while on the road; * Staying in touch with loved ones while on the road * Collaborations with other musicians & how that comes about * Giving live performances versus making studio recordings; * The role of social media & the power of collaborations - e.g. with Avi Avital, Edgar Meyer, Ray Chen, Roomful of Teeth & the Brooklyn Duo; * The Importance of public speaking as a means of connecting with the audience; * Dealing with concert reviews * Giving back to the community through Music For Food ( https://musicforfood.net/index.php/artist/dover-quartet/ ) ; and * “Balancing” a solo career with being in a quartet. *String Instruments* As the instrument itself is so important to a musician, we talk about: * The two violas she plays on & their different purposes * Modern v old instruments - which is better? Does it even matter? * How do you choose your violin? * Are violins with an unknown maker a good investment? * Impact of COVID-19 on her personal life & the life of the Dover Quartet *Role of Parents in a Child's Education* For parents with young kids or those thinking of pursuing music, we also deal with questions on: * Should all children be exposed to music / have music lessons? * How should parents handle children who don't want to practice, especially if they want to just quit after trying it for a short while? * At what age should a child learn a musical instrument? * What should people looking to pursue music think about & do? *Show notes:* https://www.sothisismywhy.com/5/ ** *Official Bio of the Dover Quartet* The phenomenal Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff Competition, at which they won every prize. Named the Cleveland Quartet Award-winner, and honored with the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Dover has become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. The Quartet's rise from up-and-coming young ensemble to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” ( Strings ). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet's distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” ( New Yorker ). The Quartet serves as the quartet-in-residence for the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, Chamber Music Northwest, Artosphere, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, and Peoples' Symphony in New York, and was recently named the first-ever quartet-in-residence for the Kennedy Center. In 2018-19 the Dover Quartet performs more than a hundred concerts around North America, including performances at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Performances, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Spivey Hall, Boston's Celebrity Series, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and Carnegie Hall. In addition, the Dover's season features tours of Hong Kong, Europe, and Australia, collaborations with Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Peter Serkin, Anthony McGill, and Roomful of Teeth, and premieres of new works by Caroline Shaw and Matan Porat. The Quartet was thrilled to be invited by the maverick filmmaker and cultural icon David Lynch to be featured at his Los Angeles Festival of Disruption. Cedille Records released the Quartet's sophomore album, entitled Voices of Defiance: 1943, 1944, 1945 in October 2017. The recording takes listeners on a powerful journey through works written during World War II by Viktor Ullmann, Dimitri Shostakovich, and Simon Laks. The 2016-17 season saw the release of its all-Mozart debut recording on the Cedille label, a nod to the 1965 debut album of the Guarneri Quartet, whose founding violist, the late Michael Tree, joined the Dover Quartet on the recording. In addition, the group has participated in three complete Beethoven quartet cycles, including the University at Buffalo's famous “Slee Cycle” – which has presented annual Beethoven quartet cycles since 1955 and has featured the likes of the Budapest, Guarneri, and Cleveland Quartets – and will record the cycle over the next three seasons. The group's world-class collaborators have included pianists Anne-Marie McDermott, Emanuel Ax, Marc-André Hamelin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Peter Serkin, and Jon Kimura Parker; violists Roberto Díaz and Cynthia Phelps; bassist Edgar Meyer; and the Pacifica and Escher Quartets. In the spring of 2016, the Dover Quartet was recognized with the Hunt Family Award, one of the inaugural Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Awards, and in past years has taken top prizes at the Fischoff Competition and the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. All four Quartet members are consummate solo artists: first violinist Joel Link took first prize at the Menuhin Competition; violinist Bryan Lee and violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt have appeared as soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Tokyo Philharmonic, respectively; and cellist Camden Shaw released a solo album debut on the Unipheye Music label. As Strad observes, “With their exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement, and taut ensemble,” the Dover Quartet is “pulling away from their peers.” Hailed as “the next Guarneri Quartet” ( Chicago Tribune ), the Dover Quartet draws from the lineage of that distinguished ensemble, as well that of the Cleveland and Vermeer Quartets; its members studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where they were mentored extensively by Shmuel Ashkenasi, James Dunham, Norman Fischer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Joseph Silverstein, Arnold Steinhardt, Michael Tree, and Peter Wiley. It was at Curtis that the Quartet first formed, and its name pays tribute to Dover Beach by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber. The group has since returned for residencies to Rice in 2011-13, and to Curtis, where it became the conservatory's first Quartet-in-Residence, in 2013-14. In addition, in 2015 the Dover was appointed the first Resident Ensemble of Peoples' Symphony Concerts in the 116-year history of New York City's oldest concert series. The Dover Quartet is dedicated to sharing its music with under-served communities and is actively involved with Music for Food, an initiative enabling musicians to raise resources and awareness in the fight against hunger. The Dover Quartet plays on the following instruments: *Joel Link* : Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, Paris circa 1857, on loan by Desirée Ruhstrat *Bryan Lee* : Riccardo Antoniazzi, Milan 1904 *Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt* : Michele Deconet, Venice, 1780, the ‘Kroyt,' generously on loan from the grandson of Boris Kroyt of the Budapest Quartet *Camden Shaw:* Frank Ravatin, France, 2010

I’m excited to share a new mix I’ve curated with dublab for the organization’s upcoming event Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. This set traverses many eras, weaving together decades in an exhibition of classical ambient music’s various roots and branches. From the awesome folks at dublab: “Travel through the Light Lock corridor as it is transformed by a dublab produced soundtrack of “furniture music.” Considered as the origins of ambient music and coined by French composer Erik Satie, this soundtrack along with lighting inspired by the work of James Turrell will be the perfect passage between the Grand Stern Hall and the Founders Room.” Tracklist below.
