We're kicking off 2025 with a special bonus episode of The Piano Pod—coming your way on Tuesday, January 7!
American classical pianist and educator Christopher O'Riley has spent his career gleefully ignoring musical boundaries and playing whatever turned him on. In addition to playing Beethoven, Busoni, Ravel, Scriabin, and Liszt, he's also arranged music by Nick Drake, Nirvana, Elliot Smith, and Radiohead; he leads masterclasses covering nearly every aspect of piano playing and repertoire from 1600 to 2020. Christopher O'Riley's latest album is of J.S. Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, done in a distinctly personal, even idiosyncratic style. He presents his years-long study of the Preludes & Fugues by Bach and a recent arrangement of a classic popular song, in-studio. Set list: 1. Bach: Prelude & Fugue #1 in C major, BWV 846 2. Bach: Prelude & Fugue #4 in C# minor, BWV 849 3."Over the Rainbow"
The beloved Irish soprano Heather Harper died at the age of 88 on 22 April 2019 in London. In music ranging from the Baroque through the modern eras, she displayed an easy mastery as did very few others, as well as a radiant voice and demeanor that made her a favorite collaborator of some of the greatest conductors and composers of the Twentieth Century. Perhaps no other singer matched her accomplishment within such a wide range of styles. This episode was originally published as an addendum to an episode I published in the second season of Countermelody. It highlights Heather Harper in two Richard Strauss roles, Ariadne and the Kaiserin; and features two works which she created, Elizabeth Maconchy's setting of Cecil Day-Lewis's dramatic monologue Ariadne, premiered in 1971, and Michael Berkeley and Ian McEwan's searing 1983 oratorio Or Shall We Die? Harper is also featured in rare recordings of repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Busoni; Offenbach to Dallapiccola. A forgotten 1964 recording of Harper's transcendent reading of “Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben” from Bach's St. Matthew Passion rounds off the episode. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

This week I present a Countermelody mini-series paying tribute to three great African American artists who were born in Baltimore. First up is the eclectic, versatile, and prodigiously talented Damon Evans, who introduces the latest Listeners' Favorites episode, a tribute to an idol we both treasure, the phenomenal and pathbreaking George Shirley, who on April 18 will celebrate his 90th birthday. Damon chose to do his introduction as an interview, so as a prelude to the main episode, my listeners get to hear one amazing tenor sing the praises of another one! George Shirley is one of the most versatile tenors of the second half of the twentieth century, and a pathbreaker as the first African American tenor to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. I first encountered him through his matchless portrayal of Pelléas in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande opposite Elisabeth Söderström. But his Mozart is equally celebrated: the podcast also features live and studio recordings of George Shirley as Tamino (opposite Judith Raskin), Don Ottavio, Ferrando (opposite Leontyne Price), as well as his extraordinary Idomeneo. Extant live performances of George Shirley including assumptions of roles as diverse as Don José (opposite Shirley Verrett), David in Die Meistersinger, Pinkerton (opposite the late Renata Scotto in an incandescent early performance of one of her greatest roles), Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust, and even Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos. All of these are included in the episode, as are rare recordings of art songs and spirituals from throughout his career. Raise a glass to the great George Shirley and join me in thanking him for having shared so generously with us his extraordinary artistic gifts!
Tom Service talks to composer Anna Meredith as her soundtrack to the poetic British film The End We Start From, and starring Jodie Comer, is featuring in cinemas across the UK. She talks in detail about the compositional process; from the very beginning as she hums a tune and records it onto her phone, to the workings required to produce music that is full of irresistible energy. Pianist Igor Levit talks to Tom about his new album featuring Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. He talks about his admiration for Busoni and the deep emotion and connection he feels when he plays music by Mahler.

Tiefste Musik!“ (mg)

Marc-André Hamelin is one of the world's greatest living pianists. He is known as a virtuoso of the highest order and has made nearly 100 recordings spanning the gamut of the piano repertoire. In this conversation we talk about how Marc fell in love with Gershwin, piano rolls, Busoni, Godowsky, the nature of virutosity, Haydn, CPE Bach, programming, nerves on stage, and much much more! This was such a fun and wide-ranging conversation and I certainly learned a lot speaking with Marc about the piano. Join us!!

Pianist-composer Bruce Wolosoff is a musical alchemist, organically mixing his multiple experiences in the worlds of jazz, rock, blues and classical music. His new solo album, Memento, melds the evolution of Wolosoff's performance and compositional style into a genre that is all his own and true to himself. Wolosoff is a “formidable pianist” (Gramophone) who can tackle the great romantics like Busoni and Liszt. He can improvise like Bach and Beethoven as well as today's jazz greats. His contemporary compositions are informed by his past whilst imbued with his current belief in “the primacy of lyricism and melody.” TRACKLIST:1. Siempre 4.492. Morning Song 4.213.

Bruce Wolosoff is a composer and pianist whose work has been recognized for the way it integrates modern, classical, jazz, and blues together into "an authentic American voice". In recent years, Wolosoff has been composing music in response to visual art. "Astronomer's Key", inspired by the artwork of Milton Resnick, was commissioned by the Roswell Artists in Residence Foundation for the Montage Music Society in celebration of the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program's 50th Anniversary. “The Loom”, inspired by the watercolors of Eric Fischl, was commissioned by the Eroica Trio and premiered at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. “for April” a work for cello and piano inspired by the charcoal drawings of April Gornik was recorded by Wolosoff with cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio and released as part of a book of Gornik's drawings. In July 2018, Bruce Wolosoff's “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra” was recorded in London by Sara Sant'Ambrogio and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Grzegorz Nowak. A frequent collaborator in the field of dance, Wolosoff has collaborated with choreographer Ann Reinking on two ballets for Thodos Dance Chicago. “The White City” was named "Best Dance of 2011" by the Chicago Sun-Times, and a film version of “A Light in the Dark”, based on the story of Helen Keller and Ann Sullivan, received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement for Arts Programming. Wolosoff's recording “Darkling, I Listen” is being used for a new Ann Reinking ballet based on the life of John Keats. An accomplished pianist as well, Bruce Wolosoff received early acclaim for a recording of piano music by Busoni. More recently, he has performed and recorded his own compositions, including "Shenandoah Variations", “Many Worlds", "Four Blues", and "Darkling, I Listen”. Wolosoff's discography also includes “Songs without Words” on Naxos American Classics. Mia sat down with Bruce in his home on Shelter Island to discuss his creative life and music.www.creativeprocess.info
