Grammy-nominated pianist Simone Dinnerstein has a wide variety of musical passions, but music by Johann Sebastian Bach is an important part of her foundation. She believes Bach's music has it all – intelligence and heart – and her expertise inspired The New York Times to describe her as "an utterly distinctive voice in the forest of Bach interpretation." Simone Dinnerstein joined Suzanne to talk about what makes Bach's music so important, her ensemble Baroklyn, and her longstanding Bach Concert Series at Miller Theatre at Columbia University, which begins in late March 2024.

The pianist Simone Dinnerstein joins us for a conversation about her second album recorded at home during the pandemic: An American Mosaic by Richard Danielpour. A 15-movement cycle of character shorts inspired by the heroes of the pandemic (Doctors and Interns, Teachers and Students, Rabbis and Ministers - to name but a few), An American Mosaic was written for Simone after the composer's own experience as an asthmatic at risk from Covid-19. To help alleviate his anxiety during this time, Danielpour listened to Simone's recording of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, which not only inspired the work as a whole, but also his three Bach transcriptions which also appear on the disc.

In her album Undersong, Simone Dinnerstein explores what it means to go to the same place again and again and to return home. The recording takes its name from the archaic word for a piece of music with a refrain, a passage of music that periodically repeats amid sections of contrasting music. It features musical works with refrains by Schumann, Couperin, Satie, and Philip Glass.

Simone Dinnerstein — Undersong (Orange Mountain Music) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Simone Dinnerstein by “It was a very funny afternoon because I was lying on my bed with my dog, Daisy, watching it on my phone,” pianist Simone Dinnerstein said about learning her recording American Mosaic received a recent Grammy Nomination for ‘Best Classical Instrumental Solo recording.' “When they announced my name, I couldn't believe it. I almost fell off the bed. It was a hysterical moment”. American Mosaic was one of two recordings Dinnerstein released last year. Now she's releasing her third album composed during the pandemic, the final in an inspired trilogy of recordings titled Undersong. “Undersong is a beautiful word that I discovered. I was looking around for words that would speak to the idea of a refrain, because every piece of music on this album has a refrain,” said Dinnerstein. “The has an almost rondeau form to it with its returning theme. “I also thought that under song has also been used as the underlying thread that holds together our world. I think that's why composers and people are drawn to refrains. It connects us to something quite deep. We like to return. We like to go home. We like to revisit things and this music is doing that.” Can you talk more about the overall cohesion of the album? “I think a lot about how pieces of music from different time periods can speak to each other, and this particular program is one that I conceived a few years ago. I was touring it before the pandemic started. It has Couperin, Schumann, Glass and Satie on it. “One part that I find particularly striking is I have performed Schumann's ‘Arabesque' and then I go into Philip Glass's ‘Mad Rush.' In this ‘Arabesque',' that final epilogue is like Schuman stepping out of time and writing something that we could hear composed today. The way it flows into ‘Mad Rush' feels like it could have been the same person who composed both of those pieces.” What is the importance of François Couperin's tracks on the album? “‘Les Barricades Mysterieuses,' is a piece that I first discovered in a film that I really love called The Tree of Life. That film is all about family. The music is used loosely as a theme throughout the film and I associated that piece with family. “The under song for me is my connection with my family, husband, son, parents and my roots here.” To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. The title is for the multi-movement piece written for her by Richard Danielpour who, finding himself isolated during lockdown, found solace in Ms. Dinnerstein's recordings. Each movement is a portrait of groups of people who responded to the pandemic, both in helpful and obstructive ways. An American Mosaic was commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival and debuted (online, understandably), by Dinnerstein, and is now available on disc. Tim has performed all over the world as a soloist with orchestra, chamber musician with Simone Dinnerstein, in a duet with Philip Glass, been our Artist-in-Residence in Chappaqua, recorded my Peace Variations and Second Sonata for violin and piano with the equally incredible pianist Steven Beck, and played in three Oscar-winning films (The Black Swan, Moonlight, and Twelve Years a Slave). In addition to unique playing and film making, he is a composer and a prophet with a searing artistic vision. I even wrote a new violin concerto for him called 'At the Shore of the Sea' which will be premiered and recorded in coming seasons. Please welcome Tim Fain to this new episode of INTERPLAY, Conversations In Music! www.michaelshapiro.com www.timfain.com

The pandemic has disrupted the lives and professional routines of artists all over the world. In the realm of classical music, it has been a huge adjustment as musicians wait at home for concert halls to once again fill with audiences who can safely hear them. New York City-based pianist Simone Dinnerstein, having had to cancel her concert season, found herself at home like so many. In June, with encouragement from her audio producer, Simone recorded on her Hamburg Steinway several etudes by Philip Glass, and the final piano sonata of Franz Schubert. They work wonderfully together, conveying "A Character of Quiet" that has become a part of our lives. It's a welcome sound to fill that space.

Life has changed for many, with the Coronavirus shifting the way we live and work. The arts community has grinded to a halt. But, with any difficulty comes innovation, bringing new ways to connect with music fans and patrons from home using the internet, social media and streaming options. It's a little more complicated for recording and performing artists like pianist Simone Dinnerstein . Her career of recording and performing piano works was paused, and the idea of recording in a concert hall was out of the question. But after some time, Simone returned to the idea of recording, presenting A Character of Quiet , a new album with music of Franz Schubert and Philip Glass. Simone spoke with Classiclectic host Kurt Hauswirth about the struggles to find motivation to create, the difficulties to overcome from recording from home and more:

When the stay-at-home orders in New York began in March, pianist Simone Dinnerstein found herself unable to sit down at the piano. So, she took to reading and going on walks in Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery with her family. In June, her producer, Adam Abeshouse, convinced her to return to the piano through recording in her home. The results of those sessions, the album A Character of Quiet, featuring works by Schubert and Glass, is out now. Zev Kane talks with her about coping with lockdown, recording the album in her house, and what Glass and Schubert have in common (besides a birthday).  Zev Kane, HostMax Fine, ProducerGeorge Wellington, Technical Producer

Simone Dinnerstein avoided the child prodigy route in her career – taking her time to mature and avoiding the "competition circuit" - catching the ears of many by playing the works of J.S. Bach, including The Goldberg Variations. The Brooklyn-based concert pianist returns to the studio to perform selected Bach compositions, specifically the Inventions and Sinfonias. Those pieces were originally written in 1723 as a musical guide for keyboard players and remain part of the core repertoire for students, amateurs, and professional musicians. Dinnerstein says the first Bach pieces she ever heard were the Inventions and has had a connection to this music ever since. Recorded at the Academy of Arts and Letters in New York with Grammy-winning producer Adam Abeshouse, Dinnerstein not only demonstrates her stunning music prowess, but highlights why these small masterpieces have endured for so long. The orchestra also plans to re-record the Bach transcriptions of Leopold Stokowski – those sumptuous, technicolor arrangements that had been considered passé (if enjoyably so). "There's been a weird phenomenon for a long time that has made it pretty rare to see Bach on symphony orchestra programs," said New York Philharmonic music director Alan Gilbert in a recent video explaining the orchestra's project. He goes on to question the "exclusivity" of suggesting "there was one only one right way to play Bach." All of this is a far cry from the period-instrument movement's expressed goals to rediscover how Baroque music might have sounded using original instruments and performance practices. For years, if not decades, period-instrument players had gained the upper hand by researching appropriate tempos, ornamentation and instruments. In this podcast, host Naomi Lewin asks three guests about this phenomenon. "I think [orchestras] are panicking," said Monica Huggett, a leading baroque violinist and conductor. "In London, where I worked most of my career, the big orchestras stopped playing Bach because in the end, there was so much good historical performance that they really didn't need to do it any more and people really didn't want to hear it any more." James Oestreich, the consulting classical music editor at the New York Times, sees things differently. "I wouldn't agree that the large orchestras are panicking," he said. "I think they've lost their balance to some extent. I think they've lost confidence in the repertory to some extent. To hold up the music scene in a world capital like London or New York and say this should set standards for who performs what, I don't think is fair." Oestreich adds that the New York Philharmonic played lots of Bach in the 1990s, and the orchestra is "perhaps overselling" the novelty of its current festival. Lewin also asks a prominent New York pianist whether she's trying to reclaim Bach for the modern instrument. "I'm not doing anything unique by playing Bach on the piano," said the pianist Simone Dinnerstein. "I think that I just have more omnivorous tastes and think that Bach sounds very interesting and different when played in many different ways on many different instruments with modern orchestras, on authentic instruments." Weigh in: Do you enjoy the sound of Bach played on modern or on period instruments? Please leave your comments below. Guests: James Oestreich, the consulting classical music editor and a freelance writer for the New York Times. Monica Huggett, a leading baroque violinist and conductor who teaches at Juilliard. Simone Dinnerstein, a pianist who has made a number of Bach recordings. Her latest, called “Night,” with the singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, features a modern rendering of Bach. .chart_div { width: 600px; height: 300px; } loadSurvey( "bach-period-instruments", "survey_bach-period-instruments");
