Die ehemalige Tänzerin Paloma Selma musste ihre Karriere wegen eines Bühnenunfalls vorzeitig beenden. Seither setzt sich dafür ein, Kultur und soziale Arbeit zu verbinden: als Gründerin des Surprise-Strassenchors ebenso wie als Leiterin des Basler Tanzfests. Wer aus eigener Erfahrung weiss, wie sich Brüche im Leben anfühlen, hat mehr Verständnis für Menschen in schwierigen Situationen, sagt Paloma Selma. Sie wuchs in der spanischen Hafenstadt Valencia auf und verliess ihre Heimat schon in jungen Jahren, um professionelle Tänzerin zu werden. Nach ersten Engagements in Bonn und Berlin kam sie 2001 nach Basel, um in der Compagnie von Richard Wherlock zu tanzen. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere riss während einer Vorstellung eine Sehne in ihrem Fuss. Danach sei sie nicht nur körperlich, sondern auch seelisch eine Weile verletzt gewesen, sagt Paloma Selma im Rückblick. Wenn sie tanzte, kamen dem Publikum die Tränen. 23 Jahre lang war Katja Wünsche professionelle Balletttänzerin, zuletzt Erste Solistin am Ballett Zürich. Ein lang gehegter Traum, der in Erfüllung ging? Nicht unbedingt. Sie habe sich nämlich gar nie bewusst dazu entschieden, Tänzerin zu werden. Als Katja Wünsche acht Jahre alt ist, stossen ihre Eltern in der Zeitung auf ein Inserat für eine Ballettschule. Und denken sich: Ballett, das würde diesem Mädchen mit dem grossen Bewegungsdrang doch guttun. Damit fängt alles an. Acht Jahre später belegt Katja Wünsche am «Prix de Lausanne», dem berühmten Tanzpreis, den dritten Platz, im Jahr darauf den zweiten. Wird nach Abschluss der Ausbildung in Stuttgart in die Kompagnie aufgenommen. Wechselt 2012 nach Zürich – und wird schliesslich Erste Solistin. Ein Publikumsliebling sei sie, schreibt die Kritik, ein «Popstar des Balletts» mit unwahrscheinlichem Talent. «Mir war immer wichtig, dass ich auf der Bühne authentisch rüberkomme, dass ich die Menschen berühre», sagt Katja Wünsche selbst. Doch irgendwann kommt der Zeitpunkt, an dem sie merkt: Es ist Zeit, aufzuhören. Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi is one of the most in-demand maestros in the world, and one of Alec’s favorite conductors. Järvi is currently the chief conductor of the NHK symphony orchestra in Tokyo and the Tonhalle Orchester-Zürich. Over his career, he’s led orchestras in Paris, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Malmö, and, for the decade between 2001 and 2011, here in the United States, as the musical director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He and his musical family are pillars of the thriving classical music scene in his home country of Estonia. The real fear behind longevity isn't aging or death, but the possibility of living longer without meaning, connection or purpose. It's good stuff, I guess, even if we've heard these existential warnings many times before. The problem is what to do about it.
