Veterinary Advice, Animal News & Views with hosts, Dr. Roger Welton & Dr. Karen Louis
Dr. Roger pet owner concerns about the potential for the newest generation of flea and tick preventatives - in a class of compounds called isoxazolines - to cause seizures. While products Nextgard, Bravecto, and Simparica Trio have gained in popularity due to their effectiveness, there is a growing concern among pet owners for the potential of neurological side effects in the pets attributed to treatment with these products. Dr. Roger Welton is a practicing veterinarian and media personality, CEO/attending veterinarian at Premier Veterinary Care, and author of the top selling book, The Man In The White Coat. Dr. Roger selects listener emails to be addressed on the air, so if interested in having your voice heard on the podcast, email comments or questions to comments@web-dvm.net. The National Advertising Division (NAD) recently examined a TV ad by Bravecto, comparing its flea and tick prevention product with NexGard's. The ad suggested Bravecto's greater effectiveness, disputed by NexGard. NAD sided with NexGard, emphasizing the need for clear and conspicuous disclosures in comparative advertising. In a separate case, Google's ads for YouTube TV claimed a $600 cost savings over cable, leading to a dispute with a cable provider. NAD supported the cable provider, stressing the importance of clear definitions for comparable services to prevent consumer misinterpretation. These cases underscore the FTC's focus on addressing ambiguous and misleading comparative claims, particularly in drug product advertising—a realm already subject to FDA caution.

Listen Now ASPCA Fighting Predatory Lenders The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has filed a lawsuit in New Jersey on behalf of two sisters who unknowingly entered into a pet leasing agreement so they could purchase an 8-week-old Golden Retriever puppy from a pet store. Both the lender and the pet store are targeted in the lawsuit. Pet stores and online puppy sellers offer pet leasing schemes to make high priced puppies appear more affordable. Consumers may think they are opting for a standard payment plan, but many of these arrangements are actually leases where the consumers are required to make inflated monthly payments while the leasing company retains ownership of the dog. At the end of the lease, the consumer is required to make an additional payment if they want to keep the dog. For the sisters in this case, they will have paid a total of $5,300 at the end of the 24-month period to fully own their dog, now named Cooper, whose original purchase price was $3,500. In this sponsored podcast, brought to you in association with MSD Animal Health, makers of Bravecto, we speak to Richard Wall and Ian Wright about flea prevalence, and new data that offers vets fresh information about how to prevent it. ______________ Richard Wall is professor of zoology at the University of Bristol, with his areas of research including veterinary entomology, parasitology and ecology. Prof Wall’s research focuses on the ecology, behaviour and control of arthropod parasites and disease vectors of veterinary importance. He also has interests in pastureland ecology and the effects of insecticides on decomposition processes. A key feature of his approach has been the use of fundamental ecological and epidemiological principles to inform practical control applications. Topics of interest include ticks and tick-borne disease, myiasis and mange, essential oils for ectoparasite control and impacts of climate change on ectoparasites. Ian Wright is a practising veterinary surgeon and co-owner of the Mount Veterinary Practice in Fleetwood, Lancashire. He has a master’s degree in veterinary parasitology, and in addition to being head of the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP UK and Ireland), is guideline director for ESCCAP Europe. He is also an editorial board member for the Companion animal and Vet CPD journals. He has written widely on parasitology topics, and is a regular contributor to Vet Times. Check elsewhere on the channel for more from Ian Wright, including podcasts on exotic parasites on imported pets, cat and dog worming and flea control. ______________ This Podcast brought to you in association with MSD animal health, makers of Bravecto®. Bravecto® is the number one parasite product in the UK [1], with data showing both vets and owners prefer its 12 week duration [2,3]. A recent data analysis on more than 160,000 dogs and cats in the UK demonstrates 12 weekly Bravecto® can increase owner compliance by at least 62% over monthly products [4,5]. This data also demonstrates compliance with Bravecto comes with other important positive effects. Dogs treated with Bravecto® were given leading de-worming (milbemycin and praziquantel combination) products almost twice as frequently than the national average of 3.1 months protection [4]. This data is backed up by a client satisfaction survey with 96% of the Bravecto users prefer Bravecto and don’t want to go back to any monthly product [2,3]. The Big Flea Project research study found significantly different levels of flea infestation for pets treated with different (in-date) products. For both cats and dogs, flea infestation was significant highest in those treated with fipronil containing products, which can be bought over the counter, and lowest in pets treated with Bravecto, a vet prescribed treatment [6]. In preparation for the main spring planting season, I wanted to release this interview with resources on dog safety. Of course this year with the pandemic a lot has changed, but regardless most of what we cover is still relevant for having dogs on and off the block tree planting! Here is Céline's post on KKR from yesterday for ALL planters with dogs this season: For planters with dogs, here is a fairly exhaustive list of items to add to your first aid + emergency preparedness kits. We have all been warned to come to camp prepared for everything we will need for the duration of our contracts. Please think about what your animal may need in the event of an emergency while you're in the bush! -Veterinary-prescribed parasiticide for fleas/ticks/heartworm (such as Bravecto, Revolution, Nexguard Spectra etc.) -Deworming (such as Drontal, Strongid etc.) -Any prescription medication or pain killers (such as Metacam, Rheumocam, Meloxicam, Gabapentin etc.) -Probiotic (such as Fortiflora) -Benadryl *XYLITOL-FREE! (2mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours as necessary) -Gravol (4-8mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours as necessary) -Pepsid (0.11-0.22mg per kg of body weight) -Laxatives (such as Laxaday or Miralax, up to 1⁄4 teaspoon daily) -alcohol, hydrogen peroxide (0.22-0.45mL per kg of body weight to induce vomiting) -Health supplements (such as Omega 3's, CBD etc) -Manuka honey -polysporin -saline tears -booties for burnt/ripped paw pads -brush, flea comb, tick key, tweezers -vet wrap, bandage tape, burn pads, gauze wrap, gauze pads, cotton balls, moist pads, non-adherent padding -sanitizing scrub, epsom salts, chlorhex soap -q-tips -thermometer + lube -tongue depressors -25G needle, syringe cap, sterile syringes -urgent care canned food -high viz collar, extra leashes, collars, muzzle, carabiner, seat belt attachment, properly-fitted harness -toys, poop bags -portable kibble bag -cauterizing sticks or flour to stop minor bleeding and ripped nails -scissors, gloves, nail clippers -identification: microchipping/tattoo/provincial or municipal registration -food for the duration of the contract, towel, cone, food and water bowls Céline Rytz is a planter, foreman and Joint OH+S Committee member with Brinkman Reforestation. She earned a pre-veterinary animal science Bachelors of Science in 2015 and has worked in several veterinary clinics as a veterinarian's assistant since. She strives to educate and support dog owners in forestry workplaces and remote communities throughout Canada. Céline constructed a project last spring for Brinkman's dog owners, specifically safety protocols while living in bush camp. I spent a fair amount of time researching online for any sort of comprehensive safety manual for dogs owners in the backcountry - whether for employment or leisure - and found very little information that was legitimate and complete. A version of her work was shared at the WFCA annual conference this year in Victoria, BC during the "Dogs in Forestry Workplace" session. Through nearly a decade of planting, she has witnessed numerous emergencies involving dogs in the bush- dog fights, musculoskeletal injuries, marijuana ingestion, insect sting anaphylaxis, hit-by-car, heat stroke/hypothermia, etc. etc. etc... Given most planting camps are a lengthy distance from any veterinary clinic, educating yourself on proper first aid treatment may reduce an animal's suffering and even save its life. Bugs are Coming! Safe Products for Breeding Dogs + CoronavirusDr. Marty Greer brings her pragmatic Veterinary Voice to the topic of Coronavirus and what products are safe to use for flea, tick and heartworm prevention in breeding dogs. COVID-19 is not currently believed to be communicable between humans and dogs. Coronavirus is a general term for a *shape* of a virus and encompasses a variety of viral infections in many species. For more information on recommendations regarding veterinary care during this outbreak, click https://www.foxrothschild.com/publications/coronavirus-response-plans-for-veterinary-practices/ (here). As spring brings the reemergence of various creepy, crawly parasites that affect our dogs, Greer provides in-depth information about which products are safe for use on dogs in our breeding programs, including brood bitches and stud dogs over the course of time, as well as bitches in whelp. Greer said, “I think it's really appropriate for us to stick to the EPA and FDA approved drugs that we know have been tested and safe in breeding animals. So, for instance, Bravecto says there were no clinically relevant treatment-related effects on body weights, food consumption, reproductive performance, semen analysis, litter data, gross necropsy or Histology findings in adults and puppies. So we need to be looking for that kind of language on a label before we go slapping things on or popping things into our dogs … I just want to be perfectly clear for what products have or have not been tested. "So there's three basic categories of flea and tick medications. There's the collar, there's the topical, the oil that goes over the back of the neck or down the back and there's the tablets or the chewables. So there are the three general categories and of those three there's no collar …. labeled for that use in breeding dogs … the topicals, some are definitely labeled and some are not definitely labeled. …if it says like Frontline says safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and cats, then it's safe. If it doesn't say that you shouldn't use it. It needs to be clear. And if we look at the oral there's …. three oral medications that are not labeled for use in breeding animals. Bravecto is labeled for use in breeding animals. So we need to be really, really clear that we're looking at the labels or reading the instructions and we're thinking at eight weeks of age, what is the this dog’s future, not just is she pregnant right now, but what is her future.” Product Active Ingredients Purpose/Effective Against Minimum Age/Weight Pregnant/Nursing/Male Heartworm Advantage Multi for Dogs Imidacloprid and moxidectin Flea, louse, heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, roundworm and mange. Bravecto is one of the newest kids on the block when it comes to the control of fleas and ticks. While it works very well, some people question this drug’s safety and others struggle with the tablet’s price. So can you split Bravecto tablets, and when should you be worried about an overdose or Bravecto side effects?Bravecto is isoxazaline parasite control product that is a tablet which: Kills fleas for 12 weeks, kills most ticks for 12 weeks (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and D. variabilis), but only kills the lone star tick for 8 weeksThe Bravecto data sheet clearly states: "The chewable tablets should not be broken or divided". This is because the active ingredient can not be guaranteed to be evenly mixed throughout tablet and so half a tablet may contain less or more than half the total tablet dose.It is uncertain how significant the difference could be but it could mean that a dog is either under-dosed or overdosed. This will depend on the size of your dog compared to the supposed dose givenThat being said, the dose rate for dogs within 1 dosing band corresponds to a dose of 25 – 56 mg fluralaner/kg body weight which is clearly quite a large dose rate to work with. You may be happy with this and so choose to split the tablet, but it is not something that I can specifically recommend.Overdose testing has been carried out for Bravecto and: "No adverse reactions were observed following oral administration to puppies aged 8 – 9 weeks and weighing 2.0 – 3.6 kg treated with overdoses of up to 5 times the maximum recommended dose"As with any drug there are potential side-effects which include: diarrhea, vomiting, drooling and inappetence, and in rare cases muscle tremors, wobbliness and even seizures in dogs taking these drugs. It might be that your dog is at a higher risk of side-effects - for example, I would be cautious about recommending its use in epileptic animals or those suffering from other types of seizuresHead over to the full show notesDownload my FREE guide - 5 Steps to Keeping Your Pet as Healthy as Possible
Veterinary Voice: Allergies! Food, Inhalant, Fleas & More Food allergies are not as common as people believe, according to veterinarian Marty Greer. Inhalant, contact and flea allergies are more prevalent. Food allergy is mostly associated with chronic ear infections and recurrent skin problems. Conclusive diagnosis requires tedious food elimination diets. “Fall is a terrible time for allergies,” Greer noted. “Especially inhalant allergies and contact allergies of pollen in the grass. You can wash the dog’s feet at night to help reduce symptoms.” Foot chewing is the top symptom for inhalant/contact allergy, Greer said. She also observed that allergies can also be additive. A dog may have a food allergy that is only triggered by the addition of a seasonal contact allergy, for example. It only takes one! Flea allergy is signaled by dogs that are itchy around the rump, Greer noted. She added that one flea bite is all it may take to set off an allergic response. “Flea control products today are really good. Topical or oral, they are very effective. Vacuuming regularly is an important control system for fleas,” Greer said. Newer flea/tick control products affect the nervous system of only the parasite, Greer said. Older organophosphate-based products were not as good, she added. Pro/Con of flea/tick preventatives Oral meds are not recommended for patients with a history of seizures, Greer said. “They are not going to make a normal dog have a seizure. But they could trigger seizure sensitive dogs. Bravecto is the only oral medication labeled for breeding dogs,” she added. Advantages to the oral preventatives are that they leave no residue on coat, Greer said. The advantages of topical treatments is they are not a concern in seizure sensitive patients and they make a repellant shield to biting insects. Topicals also get rid of fleas/ticks more quickly. Anti inflammatory treatments “In the last 10-15 years, new products have come on the market to help to replace long-term steroid use,” Greer said. “Short course steroid use is effective and the side effects are minimal.” Links and information from Dr. Greer to learn more: Atopica https://www.elanco.us/products-services/dogs/atopica-cyclosporine-capsules-usp-modified (https://www.elanco.us/products-services/dogs/atopica-cyclosporine-capsules-usp-modified) Dog Quiz: https://us.atopica.com/survey-dog (https://us.atopica.com/survey-dog) , Cat Quiz: https://us.atopica.com/survey-cat (https://us.atopica.com/survey-cat) Apoquel https://www.zoetisus.com/products/dogs/apoquel/index.aspx Cytopoint https://www.zoetisus.com/products/dogs/cytopoint/the-itch-cycle.aspx Do not use APOQUEL in dogs less than 12 months of age or those with serious infections. APOQUEL may increase the chances of developing serious infections, and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse. APOQUEL has not been tested in dogs receiving some medications including some commonly used to treat skin conditions such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine. Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. APOQUEL has been used safely with many common medications including parasiticides, antibiotics and vaccines CYTOPOINT is a monoclonal antibody (mAb)* treatment for dogs that specifically targets and neutralizes canine IL-31,† an important cytokine‡ involved in sending the itch signal to the brain in chronic atopic dermatitis2 Because it is highly targeted to a specific cytokine involved in canine atopic dermatitis, CYTOPOINT has minimal impact on normal immune functions3 CYTOPOINT is eliminated via normal protein degradation pathways in the same way as naturally occurring antibodies; metabolism does not involve the liver or kidneys Support this podcast

Listen Now
