Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old non-binary student from Oklahoma, tragically died on February 8, 2024, after three girls beat him up in a restroom on Campus. .Nex had been experiencing bullying for over a year due to their gender identity. This alleged bullying reportedly began soon after a law was passed in Oklahoma requiring students to use bathrooms corresponding to their birth certificates and an anti-trans culture emerging in Oklahoma thanks to the involvement of Libs of TikTok in the school system there. Today we talk about what it is like to be an LGBTQ youth in the state of Oklahoma, and the effects of the death of Nex Benedict. We will be talking to Travis, a youth in the school system, with Scotty Hernandez, the president of PFLAG Oklahoma, and LGBTQ youth advocate, Lance Preston, founder and executive director of Rainbow Youth Project USA, and with Kris Williams, a queer youth advocate working through the Diversity Center of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City..  Scotty is also a real estate agent who serves as the Oklahoma president of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. He ran unsuccessfully for a school board seat in the OKCPS District 4.  Lance, one of our heroes and good friend of the show, founded Rainbow Youth Project as a social welfare organization in response to recent legislation targeting the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, women, Indigenous people, and immigrants in the United States. Kris has  two decades of successful experience in developing queer youth programming; from social support, homeless services, mental health support, and inpatient residential programming. Kris specializes in 2SLGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings and was recently a guest speaker with the Trevor Project at the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention's national conference. This month on Focus Black Oklahoma:Parenting is hard and determining what constitutes a family is even harder. Oklahoma Law has no precedent for a same sex custody battle. Yet, Kris Williams finds herself in the midst of a struggle for parental rights. Shonda Little has the story. The American Dream is fairly elusive, even for the people who were born and raised in the United States. Economic inclusion and self-sufficiency for refugees are priorities of the University of Oklahoma's Humanitarian Innovation Research Group, or OU HIRG. Anthony Cherry has the story about the organization and how they are advocating for refugee rights. The need for representation across a variety of industries has been lacking for years. In particular, Black physicians are few and far between. Dr. Jabraan Pasha has details about the Youth Medical Mentorship Program which is working to change the disparity of Blacks in medicine.Against the backdrop of divisive social, cultural, and political rhetoric, as the state of Oklahoma continues to see a rise in legislation banning race and gender diversity in education, restricting reproductive health and autonomy, and restricting 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, the initiatives, programs, and services of social justice organizations in the state have become increasingly sought after, especially to equip and support young people in the approach and navigation of these complex conversations. For over eight decades, one of the state's oldest inclusivity-focused nonprofits, Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, or OCCJ, has worked to promote understanding and mutual respect through advocacy, conflict resolution and educational programs. OCCJ started as a volunteer movement chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, formally establishing the Tulsa branch in 1958. In 2005, OCCJ became independent of that national organization. Through their initiatives and programs, they continue to do the work of elevating voices and educating world citizens. On February 6th, Phil Armstrong was officially welcomed as the OCCJ's new president and chief executive officer. Juddie Williams has the story. In an effort to reinvigorate Greenwood and the health of its citizens, the Historic Greenwood District Main Street is launching Greenwood Go, an initiative to ensure more people have healthy bodies to walk the historic District but also spur healthy commerce in the community. Sondra Slade shares details.Though Tulsa's moniker as the Rose Capital has been long gone, there are still beautiful flowers all around town that highlight the history made here. As Tulsa enjoys this renaissance in arts the people of the city have committed to give its flowers to the artists that showcase its beauty. Chaz Stephens has the story.Focus: Black Oklahoma is produced in partnership with KOSU Radio, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and Tri-City Collective. Additional support is provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, and the Commemoration Fund. Our theme music is by Moffett Music.Focus: Black Oklahoma's executive producers are Quraysh Ali Lansana and Bracken Klar. In August of that year, Kris and Rebekah welcomed a baby boy into their family, and both women were recorded as mother and mother on the birth certificate. After two years, however, the couple divorced, and Rebekah petitioned the court to remove Kris from their son's birth certificate. Oklahoma County Judge Lynne McGuire ruled in favor of removing Kris's name from the birth certificate stating that Kris should have adopted her own son. Last week, Judge McGuire reversed her decision and recognized Kris Williams as a legal parent. Since the age of three, when she was memorized a passage from the classic record “A Story of Dracula, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein”, Mindy has been obsessed with the paranormal.  And it is only natural, after all, since she is the daughter of a Celtic and German descended mother born on Halloween. A researcher, Mindy has read countless volumes on the paranormal, not to mention cryptozoology and ufology. She has even conducted her own study, at the university where she works on the link between depression, anxiety, and paranormal occurrences. A skeptic, but open-minded, her day job is a licensed professional counselor so she likes to approach things from the scientific method point of view. However, her intuition is very strong and says she sometimes comes up with information in sessions with clients that seems to have an almost psychic link. She is an amateur paranormal investigator and has started a very small team with a close friend. They live almost two states apart but have met up to investigate Missouri State Pen and Waverly Hills. She is a freelance writer for Paranormal Underground magazine and also has her own blog about pop culture and the paranormal called “Pop Goes Annabelle Lee” on WordPress. Mindy also contributes to Kris Williams' genealogical blog “Key To Your Tree“.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 286 So what are the odds a show like ours, which spends the majority of it's time yammering on about movies or talking smack about celebrities, would ever get a legitimate paranormal investigator to come on the show and talk with us. Well, I'd say... there's a ghost of a chance. Regardless, this week in the middle of our coverage of ScareFest we talk with Kris Williams, former historical researcher/investigator of the Syfy channel show "Ghost Hunters", and former co-lead investigator of "Ghost Hunters International". Among other things we get her thoughts on ghost movies, the problems with paranomal TV and just what “equipment” you really need to look for ghosts. And while we are trying to find rational reasons for what is going on around us, we also talk about… how to clear an orb, digging the over-alls, Thailand, a rat in wall, being possessed by a demon, the black carpet, cops watching cop movies, as humans we’re not very good at not having answers, he’s bringing back the look, Dr. Badass, you are getting grabbed one way or another, our secret undisclosed recording area, a real slimer, so you don’t suck this time, Proxy, the static box, 4000 illegal torrent downloads, Michael Jackson dance-off, we could take you out… it’s a simple as that, a haunted firehouse, move along loser, too Feldman to even be Feldman, Ectoplasm… is that a real problem, calling bullshit, your dead Aunt so-and-so, a square chin, Catherine Hicks, being thrown about the house, I have no life apparently, I’m here to finish the job – with my battle mace, off in a segregated tent, little ghost tree houses, Sam from Trick ‘r Treat, please make something up for us, being a 14th colony, Straight Time, over-the-top, insane and crazy, John Zaffis, I’ve stalked his Facebook page, you’re gonna lose an appendage, stealing a piece of his soul, Fear Street, sparkl-dy outfits, upkeep on your spirit house, riding around on a golf cart, ghosts vs. AIDS, a different take on the zombie film, The Conjuring, a plethora of stalker pictures were taken, Three Tears On Bloodstained Flesh, maybe he managed to avoid all his dad’s creepy, The Amityville Horror, Corey Feldman and his Angel, a documentary about Reese's Pieces, Snake Plissken, Alex Vincent, a gal with a dream, not everything’s a ghost, Robert Mukes, Indiana Jones and the Eye of the Fates and double-braided pigtails. “And then uhh… we got kicked out of the haunted house.” For more on ScareFest, go to: http://scarefestcon.com/   -   For more on Kris Williams, go to: http://www.kriswilliams.com/
