This week on Streets of Your Town, we speak to renowned author and proud Wiradjuri woman Dr Anita Heiss, who is a special guest of the 60th Brisbane Writers Festival coming up in May.  It's a pivotal year for Anita, as its ten years since the original edition of her book "Amy I Black Enough For You" was released, and it's also the 60th anniversary of the festival itself. In Brisbane, and many areas around south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales, floods have inundated our homes, towns and cities It hit local communities hard, particularly artists who received little help from the government during the pandemic. While Australian artists may have been largely abandoned during the pandemic, they are now gathering to raise money for those inundated by flood.  Some may say that gathering to talk about art in the midst of a crisis is flippant. But Anita tells me on the podcast, many artists are gathering to raise money for those inundated by flood. And gathering together again she says is actually crucial for communities to recover.  Join The Wandering Journo tribe at soyt.substack.com and read all the background stories from these little gems of Australian life. Listen to the debate from the Battle of Ideas 2018 festival at the Barbican in London on Sunday 14 October (www.battleofideas.org.uk). Novelist Lionel Shriver isn’t afraid of speaking her mind. At the 2016 Brisbane Writers Festival, she caused a furore by calling into question the contemporary focus on identity politics, saying ‘I hope the concept of cultural appropriation is a passing fad’. More recently, she was accused of racism when arguing that diversity quotas in publishing mean literary excellence becomes secondary to ticking boxes. As well as a staunch defender of intellectual freedom, Shriver is perhaps better known as a multiple award-winning author. How difficult is it to criticise identity politics in today’s climate? Is diversity in the arts something to aspire to or should we focus on the content of what’s being published, rather than the writer? Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia is a compilation of 52 essays from First Nations authors, some of whom have never been published before. Rounak Amini/AAPAnita Heiss is one of the most prolific writers documenting Aboriginal experiences in Australia today through non-fiction, historical fiction, poetry and children’s literature. Her memoir, Am I Black Enough for You?, was a finalist in the 2012 Human Rights Awards. Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia. Black Inc. Books For her latest book, Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia, Heiss traded the role of writer for editor. The anthology includes 52 essays from First Nations writers spanning the breadth of society, from rural to urban, young to old, coastal regions to the country’s interior, well known authors to emerging writers. There’s even an essay by an opera singer, Don Bemrose, about his experience as what she calls a “double minority” – he’s both Aboriginal and gay. The result is a collection of stories that speaks to the strength of Aboriginal identity in Australia today, as well as the diversity of voices in the long marginalised Aboriginal literary community. For this episode of Speaking With, Professor Jacinta Elston, pro vice-chancellor (Indigenous) at Monash University, spoke with Heiss about the process of making the selections for the anthology, the main themes explored in the essays and how she envisions the book being used as a reference tool in classrooms across the country. Edited by Maggy Liu. Anita Heiss is speaking at the Brisbane Writers Festival on Sunday, 9 September. A white supremacist holding a US flag over his face during a Unite the Right rally in Washington in August. Michael Reynolds/EPAThe rise of the radical right-wing movement in the US has become closely linked to Donald Trump’s presidency and the mainstreaming of ideas about race that were not so long ago found only on the furthest fringes of society. David Neiwert’s new book, Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump, charts the key political and social moments that have shaped these movements. He has spent more than two decades immersing himself in the strange, disturbing world of radical right-wing groups in the US, which are characterised by conspiracy theories unhinged from reality and a growing tendency to espouse violence against liberals as a solution to the world’s problems. Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump. Verso Books While many of the ideas championed by these groups are similar those propagated by the Ku Klux Klan of the past, the new radical right-wing groups have benefited from the internet and social media. This allows them to easily communicate their perceived grievances to a new generation of followers, predominantly young men. In some ways, this provides for a degree of anonymity, as well. Some of the more violent, racist and often misogynist views are promulgated by these groups online with little personal social cost. What is most concerning, and what Neiwert demonstrates in detail throughout the book, is the way in which the mainstream news media, in particular Fox News, has become a forum for mainstreaming some of these ideas about racial superiority, fuelling political division and partisanship. With the election of Trump, these once marginalised groups now have a clear figurehead – one who promotes their wild, and sometimes dangerous, conspiracy theories to the world. Neiwert’s book delves deep into the anxieties these people feel about their status in a changing and complex world. Issues like immigration, changing race relations, women’s rights and economic stagnation have all fuelled a desire to find someone to blame. When this is mixed with a pervasive gun culture, the result is a highly volatile mix of anger, paranoia and violence. Investigative journalist David Neiwert. Author provided The consequences have been deeply disturbing. Political rallies that end in frenzied screams of “lock her up”, alt-right rallies that result in death, and the growing toll of mass shootings that are disproportionately carried out by offenders influenced by the alt-right are a sign that something fundamentally twisted and nasty is colonising mainstream American politics. Edited by Maggy Liu. David Neiwert is appearing at the Word Christchurch Festival on Thursday, 30 August; the Antitode Festival in Sydney on Sunday, 2 September; and the Brisbane Writers Festival on Saturday, 8 September. This week Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin delve into Andrew Gaff’s horrible strike on Andrew Brayshaw and the incident’s impact on the game, plus they discuss reports that the relationship between the AFL and the AFLW may be deteriorating.  Caro and Corrie check in with the latest in the Geoffrey Rush defamation case which leads to some reminiscing about memorable celebrity interviews, like Corrie’s 12 minutes with Hugh Grant and Caro’s interview with Cher.   Just what makes a great celebrity interview? This Saturday the 11th of August is ‘Love Your Bookshop Day’, we discuss the future of the suburban bookstore and how you can get involved in showing your local bookshop a little love on Saturday. “Bookshops are the new black” says Caro. More details HERE  In “BSF” Caro’s raving about her recent read (direct from the states) ‘Hope Never Dies’ by Andrew Shaffer, the first in the Obama/Biden series. (Avaiable soon at My Bookshop HERE). Caro’s had a heart warming night at the movies watching “Mamma Mia : Here We Go Again” (aka Mamma Mia 2). Corrie serves up friend Andrea’s “Eye Fillet With Beetroot, Zucchini and Spinach Salad (see recipe below).  Caro’s grumpy about Jeff Kennett again after an interesting weekend radio interview and in ‘6 Quick Questions’ - are the Gold Coast Suns on death row?, the latest high profile ‘un - invites’ from the Brisbane Writers Festival, favourite winter flowers and more.  Corrie’s ‘Crush of the Week’ - the women of America who are coming forward in droves to consider running in September’s election.  'Don't Shoot The Messenger' is produced, engineered and edited by Jane Nield for Crocmedia.  Send an email to the show via feedback@dontshootpod.com.au.      Andrea’s Beetroot and Spinach Salad (great served as a bed on a platter with pieces of eye fillet and pesto on top).  Aim to marinate the beef for 2 days.    Marinade 500ml Tamari 250ml Cider Vinegar 1 red chilli chopped 6 cloves of garlic   Put all of your marinade ingredients into a blender and blitz.  Place your beef in a long dish and pour over marinade Seal well and put in fridge turning every 12 hours After 2 days remove meat from marinade and dry with a cloth   Dressing for Spinach salad  6 cloves garlic ¼ cup seeded mustard  150ml cider vinegar Salt and pepper 350ml olive oil   Whizz these ingredients up.   Mix spinach leaves, diced baby beetroot (cooked prior) diced zucchini (which you’ve blacked in boiling water for 2 minutes).  While zucchini is still hot, toss the salad dressing, spinach leaves and diced beetroot together and spread on a large serving platter.  Cook your eye fillet however you like it best (ie BBQ or oven).  Rest the meat then slice and lay on the bed of spinach salad You can drizzle with your favourite pesto to serve as well.

Activist, writer, engineer, motoring enthusiast and outspoken young Muslim woman of colour Yassmin Abdel-Magied is kicking arse on multiple levels right now and I felt very lucky indeed to have this opportunity to chat with her. Earlier this year, Yassmin sparked a large controversy in the literary world when she walked out on author Lionel Shriver's speech on cultural appropriation at the Brisbane Writers Festival. Here she reflects on that experience and further explores her thoughts on why an awareness of what cultural appropriation is and how it works is important.  Last week's guest Gay Alcorn had a different take on this subject; you can listen back to that episode here.  The World Keeps Happening is being filmed for Stan at the Comedy Theatre on Saturday December 3rd Boundless Plains To Share at Belvoir Theatre in January 2017 The Greens' petition against the lifetime visa ban for people seeking asylum Welcome to Eltham's video  @yassmin_a Why does my headscarf mean to you? Yassmin's TED talk Lionel Shriver's speech in full: I hope the concept of cultural appropriation is a passing fad I walked out of the Brisbane Writers Festival keynote address this is why by Yassmin Abdel-Magied We need to talk about cultural appropriation: why Lionel Shriver's speech touched a nerve by Stephanie Convery What happened in Brisbane by Suki Kim  Identity politics doesn't deserve Lionel Shriver's contempt, but it can be limiting by Nesrine Malik Will the Left survive the Millenials? by Lionel Shriver A call for difficult conversations not censorship by Yassmin Abdel-Magied Why the shaming of Lionel Shriver leads to a literary ghetto by Anson Cameron Confronting Lionel Shriver by Maxine Beneba Clarke White Fragility: why it's so hard to talk to white people about racism by Dr. Robin DiAngelo White Nonsense Round Up on Facebook Cause of the Week: Mumtaza (mumtaza.agency)

Bestselling American author Justin Cronin - in his only Canberra appearance between the Melbourne and Brisbane Writers Festival - discusses his life and books with Colin Steele, particularly his recently completed post-apocalyptic Passage trilogy. The Weekend Australian has commented that the trilogy,The Passage (2010), The Twelve(2012) and The City of Mirrors (2016), is "part dystopian essay, FBI procedural, vampire saga and military novel. There are echoes of John Steinbeck, Cormac McCarthy, Bram Stoker, Tom Clancy and Stephen King". King himself has commented that the trilogy "is remarkable for the unremitting drive of its narrative, for the breathtaking sweep of its imagined future, and for the clear lucidity of its language". Film rights have been sold to Ridley Scott. Harvard educated Cronin is also the author of Mary and O'Neil (which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and the Stephen Crane Prize), and The Summer Guest. He has been a Fellow of the US National Endowment for the Arts and is a Distinguished Faculty Fellow at Rice University. Colin Steele is an ANU Emeritus Fellow and is Convenor of the Meet the Author series.
