How Much Should You Share Online? (Authenticity vs Oversharing)

The Confidence Chronicles

One of the biggest questions I get when it comes to showing up online is this: “How do I know if I'm being authentic… or if I'm oversharing?” Where is the line between vulnerability and trauma dumping? In this episode, I'm breaking down the balance between being raw and real while still protecting yourself and your credibility. Because here's the truth: Authenticity builds connection. But not everything belongs on the internet. I share how I built my brand by documenting my process of becoming — from recording podcast episodes in my car while broke and exhausted with two kids, to building a global personal brand and loyal audience. You'll learn how to share your story in a way that creates connection, trust, and authority without feeling like you're exposing every part of your life. This episode is for you if you're: • Scared of what people will think online • Worried you're sharing too much • Holding yourself back from being seen • Trying to build a personal brand or business • Learning how to tell your story with power Inside this episode we talk about: • The difference between sharing from a scar vs sharing from a wound • How to know if you're oversharing or actually not sharing enough • The storytelling method I call zooming in vs zooming out • Why perfection erodes connection • How vulnerability builds loyalty and community • The question you must ask before sharing anything online At the end of the day, your story is yours. And when you learn how to share it intentionally, it becomes one of the most powerful tools you have to connect, lead, and serve others. In This Episode • Authenticity vs oversharing • Building a personal brand online • Vulnerability and storytelling • Trauma dumping vs healed sharing • Personal branding and content creation • Confidence and showing up online Chapters 00:00:00 The Authenticity Strategy That Built My Brand 00:00:29 Welcome to the Confidence Chronicles 00:01:25 The Number One Question About Showing Up Online 00:03:13 When Fear Holds You Back From Being Seen 00:04:19 My Broke, Breastfeeding, Car Podcast Origin Story 00:06:51 When You Have Nothing Else But Your Story 00:07:57 The Loyal Cult-Like Following I Built Through Sharing 00:12:23 Document Your Process of Becoming 00:14:20 Getting Metaphorically Naked on the Internet 00:17:01 The Zoom Out Strategy for Professional Boundaries 00:22:08 The Scar vs The Wound: When to Share Your Story 00:25:49 Intent Is Everything When Sharing Vulnerability 00:30:11 Know Your Audience and What They Need to Hear 00:33:12 The More You Zoom In, The More They Come Closer 00:34:04 Being Imperfect Is Part of My Brand 00:34:42 Thank You for Letting Me Into Your World Connect With Erika

Last week, I gave you my Presentation Skills Checklist. And step one in that checklist was to know your audience.Listen to any speaking coach, go to any Toastmasters, attend any presentation seminar, you will hear a single phrase over and over. “Know your audience.” Sounds really good too. When we hear the phrase, we think, “Well, of course. That makes sense.” But what exactly does “know your audience mean?” Is there a formula to help a speaker know his or her audience better?Well, yes, there is. In fact, every presenter should use this formula before creating any speech or any PowerPoint slide. Because the answers that you get from following the formula will greatly change what content you cover in your presentation. The answers will also allow you to change your delivery so that your audience is more likely to agree with you.So, on today's episode, I'll show how to research your audience and identify exactly what they need to take away from your presentation and why. If you understand this, design great presentations and reducing presentation nervousness is a piece of cake.Show Notes: Know Your Audience before Designing Presentation(https://www.fearlesspresentations.com/know-your-audience-before-designing-your-sales-presentation/)

Niche Down to Win: Persuasive Strategies to Target Your Ideal Customer

It's the Bottom Line that Matters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2025 21:14

In this episode of "It's the Bottom Line That Matters," host Jennifer Glass is joined by Daniel McCraine and Patricia Reszetylo to tackle the essential question facing many business owners: How do you effectively market to your ideal customer? The discussion zeroes in on the concept of niche marketing—moving away from the temptation to "market to everyone" and, instead, thoughtfully narrowing your focus to identify and truly understand your perfect client, or avatar. Using lively examples from their own experience, including Patricia's background in the equine industry, the trio unpacks practical ways to get inside the minds and worlds of specific groups, from moms over 40 to veterans, and explains why specificity matters so much in successful marketing. The episode is rich with actionable advice, such as segmenting your audience, matching your messaging to your niche's interests, and using the exact language your target group uses (not marketing jargon or internal company lingo). Daniel and Patricia also touch on the fear business owners sometimes feel about “niching down” too far, offering a fresh perspective on how being a “big fish in a small pond” can make a business far more competitive and memorable. Listeners will learn about the importance of personalizing marketing efforts—down to details like images on packaging that resonate with a specific audience—and the pitfalls of generic messages. The conversation wraps up with tips on resonating authentically with your audience, emphasizing that confused or overlooked customers won't buy, and urging business owners to “get as granular as possible” for real results. If you want to boost your marketing impact and discover exactly how to speak your customers' language, you'll come away from this episode with strategies you can use right away.KEYWORDS: ideal client, avatar, niche marketing, market segmentation, sales copy, persuasive language, marketing to moms, marketing to veterans, marketing to baby boomers, marketing to kids, equine marketing, teleseminar, customer agreements, buying decisions, writing for your audience, niching down, consumer lingo, affinity marketing, product targeting, retailer marketing, sales letters, demographic segmentation, direct marketing, customer needs, decision makers, gym marketing, nutritional supplement drinks, sales funnels, veteran marketing, retail product labelingHere are 3 key takeaways from the episode:The Power of Specificity: The tighter you define your niche, the easier it becomes to tailor copy, metaphors, and offers that truly resonate with your audience. Patricia Reszetylo shares how talking directly to a single customer makes your message more persuasive.Know Your Audience's Language: Whether you're targeting veterans, horse owners, or moms over 40, using your audience's language—not yours—boosts credibility and relevance. As Jennifer Glass reminds us, lingo matters!Go Beyond Demographics: Overlay affinities, interests, and experiences for an even smaller “pond”—think not just “golfers,” but “golfers who ride Harleys.” It's about understanding not just who they are, but what they care about. If you're ready to step out of the ‘market to everyone' trap and start truly connecting with your best-fit clients, give the full episode a listen!#MarketingStrategy #BusinessGrowth #FindYourNiche #ItsTheBottomLineThatMatters #PodcastTakeaways

Send us a textIn this episode of Imperfect Marketing, host Kendra Corman tackles one of her biggest marketing pet peeves — believing that artificial intelligence can replace truly knowing your audience. With AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini becoming everyday marketing helpers, many professionals are skipping the fundamentals of understanding their customers. Kendra explains why that shortcut leads to bland, ineffective content and what to do instead. The Problem with Skipping the BasicsMany marketers use AI to generate content without doing the essential groundwork of understanding their audience.AI tends to “make you happy” — it tells you what you want to hear, not necessarily what your target market is actually thinking. When you rely solely on AI, you end up with generic, emotionless copy that fails to connect.Understanding Your Audience: The Real Marketing 101Knowing your audience isn't just about demographics — it's about visualizing the person you're talking to.Kendra shares a story about working with a local business that used detailed data to build realistic customer personas—down to shopping habits, lifestyle, and motivations. You don't need expensive software to do this. Start by thinking about your favorite client and what makes them unique. How to Really Learn About Your AudienceSkip the surveys—people edit themselves when writing responses.Have real conversations with your audience instead. Ask questions like:What's keeping you up at night? What frustrates you most about your business or life? What do you wish you had a solution for? These conversations give you the exact words and emotions that resonate with your audience — words you can later feed into AI for far more powerful results.Using AI the Right WayOnce you understand your audience, AI becomes a powerful tool — not a replacement for human connection.AI can help you:Brainstorm ideas and refine your voiceDraft faster and polish existing contentCreate consistent, audience-specific messagingThe difference between “Write me an email” and “Write me an email for this audience, in this voice, about this problem” is night and day.Key Takeaways for MarketersAI isn't the enemy — but it's not magic either. You are the strategist. AI can only amplify what you already know.Know your audience better than anyone else, and your marketing will never sound forced or fake.Whether you're a business owner, marketer, or content creator, this episode will challenge you to return to the roots of great marketing: understanding people.

If you've ever felt eye-rolled for your woowoo stuff, spirit signs, or spiritual development, this episode is your reminder: you're not weird, you've just been talking to muggles. According to Harry Potter, a Muggle is a person who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born in a magical family. In this episode, I talk about knowing your audience and why “this stuff” isn't for every room, every friend group, or every family chat.  I share how tiny intuitive knowings get dismissed around the wrong people, why it's okay to keep sacred things private using 3 examples that have happened over the last few weeks in my daily life.  We talk about who is safe to share with and when to keep your practice quiet. "This stuff" is important and fun, just don't feel obligated to explain it to people who won't understand.  You aren't weird, you are just talking to the wrong people.  Book a session with Medium in the Middle (Virtually or in-person in Banff): https://mediuminthemiddle.as.me/schedule.php Register for the next virtual Usui Reiki Level One Course on September 13 & 14 https://www.themediuminthemiddle.com/reiki-level-one Register for the next virtual Usui Reiki Level Two Course on September 27 & 28: https://www.themediuminthemiddle.com/reiki-level-two Sign up for the Practice Mediumship Circle (no experience necessary) on September 20: https://www.themediuminthemiddle.com/meeting-in-the-middle Follow along on social media: https://www.facebook.com/mediuminthemiddle/ https://www.instagram.com/mediuminthemiddle/
