“Bosom Buddies” is a sitcom that aired on ABC from 1980 to 1982. The show starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari as two single men who disguise themselves as women to be able to move into a cheap apartment at a women-only residence. The show often explored themes of gender stereotypes and male/female relationships, using the characters' disguises to create comedic situations. Although “Bosom Buddies” started with good ratings, it struggled to maintain its audience and was canceled after two seasons. Despite its short run, the show is notable for launching Tom Hanks' career, who went on to become an Oscar-winning actor. Is this a show worth checking out? Could this show even be made modern day? Listen as the guys deep dive the show's pilot episode. Starring: Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Donna Dixon, Holland Taylor, Telma Hopkins, Wendie Jo Sperber, & Edie Adams www.S1E1POD.com MERCH Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1Pod

"Homes and Jojo" (May 1, 1989) Newhart is a show about white people who live in the snow, and while 70s-era Bob Newhart sitcom is the one pop culture remembers better, this is the longer-lived, more-Emmy-nominated of the two. What the 80s-era Bob New1hart sitcom has working in its favor are future Simpsons showrunner David Mirkin, who gives a host of wacky townspeople not unlike what you'd find in Springfield, and the duo of Julia Duffy and Peter Scolari, who male a perfect yuppie couple worthy of mockery. It's great. Here, learn about it. “Sonny Boy” (February 12, 1981) Is it surprising that TV's most famous drag sitcom never dared to do anything actually gay? It shouldn't be! And for all that could end up going wrong with this premise, this episode, concerning Peter Scolari's character having to explain to his mother why he's wearing a dress, weirdly (and probably accidentally) gets a lot right about coming out. It's a story about someone saying it doesn't matter whether anyone understands your decision. As Billy Joel once said, “I don't care what you say anymore / This is my life / Go ahead with your own life / Leave me alone.” Since Bosom Buddies isn't streaming anywhere, you can watch this episode on our Vimeo. Book Vs. Movie (2019 Replay) The Polar ExpressThe Margos take a wild ride into the classic 1985 children's book and compare it to the 2004 Robert Zemeckis Film. It's our last new episode of the year, and we had to celebrate with one of our most requested titles ever--The Polar Express from author/illustrator Chris Van Allsburg. The book has sold millions of copies since its 1985 release (one million by 1989 alone!), and it's only 32 pages, so we only have a few beautiful things to say about it. But what about the 2004 film starring Mr. Tom Hanks? We have feelings about this movie, kids--and we want to know what YOU think in the comments below. So between the book & movie--which did we like better? Have a listen to find out! After revisiting Face-Off, we follow up with the 1997 Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones comedy Men in Black. And then go back to watch the adaptation of a Carl Sagan book, 1997's Jodie Foster film Contact. And make sure to interact with new Wakanda Forever locations on MCU Location Scout. Enjoy Giving T Hanks! This week we try to narrow down a large body of quality work from America's Dad, Tom Hanks. The actor, who started his career out of college, having been unable to even get a role in college plays, rocketed to stardom. He started on TV with some small parts and partnering up with Peter Scolari on Bosom Buddies. But when Splash gained so much success, producers and directors started using him more in bigger roles. He had a series of successful comedies in the 80's like Bachelor Party (1984), The Money Pit (1986), Dragnet (1987), and Turner and Hooch (1989). Big really shot Hanks's popularity in 1988, and he started dipping his toe in some romance roles like Joe versus the Volcano (1990), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), and You've Got Mail (1998). And his role as Woody in Toy Story (1995) continues to evolve and become popular and has even inspired a new Disney park area. But it was his role in the drama Philadelphia (1993) that won him his first Oscar, only to be followed up the following year with Forrest Gump (1994) with another Oscar. Plus other incredible performances in Apollo 13 (1995), Saving Private Ryan (1998), and The Green Mile (1999) He continues to create well-liked films with humor, drama, and emotion into the 21st century with memorable roles in movies like Cast Away (2000), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), and Elvis (2022) Are you a fan of Tom Hanks? What are some of your favorite performances? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Life is like a box of chocolates” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

Television, film and Broadway actor Brian D'Arcy James joins us to talk about two of his latest projects: a starring role in the Sondheim musical Into The Woods, currently on Broadway; and a major recurring role on Paramount+ series EVIL. “I love the show, I love how bold it is, I love what it does with genre” James said of the series. “It really takes you places that are surprising which is hard to do these days. The appetite for this thing is pretty voracious and I think it's because of how bold and imaginative that the Kings are with their storytelling. It's great to be part of something that has such mystery behind it and really can go to extreme places. “To play Victor LeConte as this mysterious cloak-and-dagger figure is a dream come true for me. I'm a big fan of spy shows and novels and to scratch the surface of that genre with this character is really, really fun.” James first appeared in the series' during the second season and worked with the late Peter Scolari who was a recurring character throughout the first two seasons before his untimely death. “That scene [in season two] that I did to set my character on its course was with Peter and I think very fondly of that,” he said of working with the Emmy-winning actor. “He was such a fixture on the show.” You can see Brian D'Arcy James in the season finale of EVIL, available to stream on Paramount+. Into the Woods is currently in performances on Broadway at the St. James Theatre.
