The Holdovers (2023) Directed by Alexander Payne “Alexander Payne's The Holdovers is not the kind of film you would expect to contain a dose of movie magic, but there it is, right there in the lead performance by Paul Giamatti.” [Derek Armstrong, ReelGood] THE HOLDOVERS is a comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways and Nebraska to name a few…) and set in the winter of 1970. Paul Giamatti plays a strict, pompous teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone a handful of students with nowhere to go on Christmas break. The Holdovers is more than just a Christmas movie - it observes some people's natural levity in late December, while others feel sorrow over those who are now absent, or maybe were never there in the first place. Catch Flick and this week's guest reviewers Dr. Jess Balanzategui and Zach Ruane discuss their thoughts on Payne's newest film THE HOLDOVERS. This Seventh Cinema season is dedicated to exploring the intersections of neo/colonialism and global climate change, zooming in on global colonial expansion and its persistent effects on the environment, human rights, and cultural landscapes. We spoke to Kori Miles and Lucie Loy regarding the seven-week free film festival in Richmond, delving into the festival's curatorial vision. The festival showcases an array of rare and special films, including titles like "Ten Canoes" and "Neptune Frost." Accompanying each feature film, a carefully selected short film is presented, chosen to complement and enhance the viewing experience of the subsequent film. The festival has four weeks remaining, When: Thursday 25 January 2024 - Thursday 07 March 2024, Films commence at 8.45pm. One of the topics that first inspired us to start this podcast, Resource Frontiers. Back in 2016, when Hell or High Water was released, Isaac and I were still working at our beloved art house theatre and our discussion of the film kept coming back to its multi-layered resource frontier setting. Settler colonial zones and the effects on indigenous populations were regular topics of conversations and, of course, Wages of Fear (1953) kept coming up too. Since it took us so long to finally cover this topic, we have a newer film in the mix. Neptune Frost (2021) rounds out our coverage on this episode. Between these three films we've got a stone cold French classic, a neo-western heist film and a sci-fi Afrofuturism visual feast...in other words, an Isaac triple feature special.  Here is the paper by Jason W. Moore that Isaac referenced. Follow us at: Patreon / Twitter / Instagram / Letterboxd / Facebook

Multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary artist Saul Williams brings his unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that's a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman, the film takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region's natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience – Neptune Frost is an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends. We all knew it was coming but it didn't soften the blow any when Roe V Wade was overturned in the US last week. Women across Canada, myself included, turned to social media to voice their concern and support for American women. Social media however is not enough. Our support must be followed by action which is why I asked Samanta Krishnapalli from On Canada Project to join me for today's show to share what we can do beyond the hashtag. Anne Brodie is here with entertainment and this week we start with a look at two shows that will appeal to those that picked up gardening and baking during the pandemic. Gardener's World and The Great British Baking Show will help you hone your skills with real tips you can use. Anne also shares her thoughts on Neptune Frost, an "Afrofuturist sci-fi musical" produced by bad boy Ezra Miller and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Apples, the feature debut of Greek director Christos Nikou, plus much more over on whatshesaidtalk.com. Last May, Connie Walker came upon a story about her late father she'd never heard before. One night back in the late 1970s while he was working as an officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he pulled over a suspected drunk driver. He walked up to the vehicle and came face-to-face with a ghost from his past—a residential school priest. From there Connie took a deep dive into her past and has now released, “Stolen: Surviving St. Michaels,” a Spotify Original Podcast Connie that unearths how her family's story fits into one of Canada's darkest chapters: the residential school system. In March of 2020 travel writer Lauren Yakiwchuk found herself at home with a lot of time on her hands and decided to start hiking in Ontario. She then started a website called Ontario Hiking where she hosts quarterly hiking challenges, group hiking trips, and she has amassed a whopping 86,000 members in her Facebook community. Lauren joins me now to share five hiking spots you need to explore in Ontario this summer. Finally money matters are on everyone's mind these days, and we are inundated with advice which often makes it even more overwhelming. Stephanie Chabot from the Finance Diaries helps keep things simple for her followers. Stephanie helps make finance topics less scary by openly discussing them, sharing mistakes, and providing easy steps that anyone can follow to reach their financial goals. A decision by the State could potentially add hundreds more housing units in San Diego and change the look of the city's coastal communities. Then, the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Topeka Board of Education ended “separate but equal” school discrimination and began the integration of American schools. But a new book tells the story of a little-known consequence and legacy of the ruling: Black teachers and principals who taught in segregated schools, lost their jobs and were replaced by white teachers. And, with abortion rights in jeopardy, many women are sharing their personal stories. For those who terminated pregnancies before it was legal in 1973, the memories can be especially painful. Finally, a preview of the film, “Neptune Frost.” The Afrofuterist sci-fi musical has been making the festival rounds but is playing exclusively at Digital Gym Cinema in East Village through Thursday.

Saul Williams is a legend who refuses to rest on his laurels. A pioneer of the Hip hop meets spoken word movement of the 90s, he created a lane that drove poetry from the musty halls of academe into the modern era. As a recording artist, he has worked with Rick Rubin, Trent Reznor, Nas, The Fugees, Erykah Badu, KRS-One, Zack De La Rocha, De La Soul, as well as poets Allen Ginsberg and Sonia Sanchez. Perhaps his most ambitious project to date is Neptune Frost, a sci-fi Afro-Futurist musical movie written, composed and co-directed by Williams. We talk about his love of Broadway, the writing of a modern musical, African e-waste camps where our tech goes to die, hip hop's continued relevance as mixed media, making connections between the ancient and the future and much more. NEPTUNE FROST is a multi-hyphenate, multidisciplinary from the hearts and minds of artists Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman. They bring their unique dynamism to this Afrofuturist vision, a sci-fi punk musical that's a visually wondrous amalgamation of themes, ideas, and songs that Williams has explored in his work, notably his 2016 album MartyrLoserKing. Co-directed with his partner, the Rwandan-born artist and cinematographer Uzeyman, NEPTUNE FROST takes place in the hilltops of Burundi, where a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. Set between states of being – past and present, dream and waking life, colonized and free, male and female, memory and prescience,  Neptune Frost co-directors Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman bring an invigorating and empowering direct download to the cerebral cortex and a call to reclaim technology for progressive political ends.
