Today's episode is a little different and is much more of a review and list of some great date day/night locations in and around Dayton, starting with the Teapot Cafe Lounge in Dayton, which just had its grand opening yesterday on Valentine's Day. The Teapot Cafe Lounge bills itself as Ohio's first infused coffee shop lounge, and you can get infused drinks, edibles, and smokeables there. All of them were really good and I definitely recommend checking the place out! Their website (www.teapotcafelounge.com) is still under construction, but you can find them on Facebook at https://teapotcafelounge.com/. After that we headed over to West Social Tap and Table and got some lumpia from Lumpia Queen. It's definitely one of our favorite spots to go to get something to eat, especially if we're both in the mood for different things. There's a great bar in the center of it as well and you can stop in the National Aviation Historic Park across the street if you're wanting to make it an educational date. Visit https://westsocialtapandtable.com/ to find hours and vendor information. Next up was Nails on Brown for a pedicure, and it's just hands down one of our favorite places to go to get one. They do a great job and you don't feel rushed or nickel and dimed when you visit. 10/10 would recommend! Visit https://www.nailsonbrown.com/ and book your appointment ahead of time. After that we visited Tokyo Grill Sushi Bar and Hibachi Buffet, and it was all delicious. There are a couple of locations in the area, but I would venture to guess that all are really good. Finally, we ended the night at the Monkey Bar and Grill, and the story behind the name alone is worth the visit. Definitely check it out sometime, and I would recommend doing it in the spring or summer when you can sit outside and admire the view of the river. Visit https://themonkeybarandgrille.com/ for more information. To learn more about the Discover Dayton Podcast host, Arch Grieve, visit gemcitydudeistpriest.com.

One of the first complaints people will have when they talk to you about eating vegan is how expensive it is to eat that way. It can be if you're using all the meat replacements in the freezer section, but it doesn't have to be.First big tip is to cook your own food. Try not to depend on meat replacements. You can even make some really cheap things like ramen work, if you use your own seasoning.Try to shop only once a week and use what you have. It'll help to prepare and plan meals ahead of time. When you do shop, stick to the outer perimeter of the store because that's where the produce and healthier options tend to be. Staples like beans and rice are great to buy in bulk.If you are at a fast food place, just get the salad. Before you go though, research which dressings are available that are vegan and know if you'll have to ask for no cheese, no egg, or no meat.It can be done as long as you're clear on your goals and you stick to them. We learned these the hard way, so listen up! We're diving right into some huge tips that will make things much easier. DO bring snacks! You can't make good decisions hangry.DON'T just trust when someone tells you something is vegan. People don't always know what that means.DO take a B12 supplement. Experiment with protein shakes and quick breakfasts that'll keep you full longer, but…DON'T depend on processed foods. That'll get you in a rut really quickly.DO have a plan to curb your cravings.DON'T feel like you have to give up on eating out. It can be done, just do your research ahead of time. You can search for vegan restaurants near you using https://www.happycow.net/We'll be sharing updates on salad dressings and restaurants in our community! https://icbiv.captivate.fm/supersecretMusic credit: Cafe Lounge by FASSoundsA Podcast Launch Bestie productionMentioned in this episode:Join the community >>
Before going vegan, there were some things we wish we knew. The journey got so much easier once we figured out what to do in these 5 areas:Knowing what restaurants were in our area with vegan options. Not all restaurants that have a vegan option will come up on a vegan restaurant search, so look around and find them.Knowing our triggers and how to avoid getting hangry. Starting out especially, the hardest part was making sure that there were enough snacks available so we didn't default to something easy and fall off the wagon.Knowing what food that wasn't meat related was actually vegan. There are often non-vegan ingredients. Finding a local vegan community. It always helps to find like-minded people to share ideas and resources.Know and use your alternate protein sources. You can search for vegan restaurants near you using https://www.happycow.net/Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? Welcome back! Today we're going to talk about how to manage road snacks, eating out, and how to feel full. Going on road trips or going out to restaurants can be difficult, but preparation is key. Here are some tips from our experiences:Pack lots of snacks.Research restaurants before you go and if there's no vegan option there, eat before you go.Know yourself and your limitations.Bring your own dish to family functions or potlucks. If you're ever in San Antonio, definitely check out Binge Kitchen, Project Pollo, Cake Thieves, Blissful Burgers, and Earth Burger. You can search for vegan restaurants near you using https://www.happycow.net/Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? When you think of “vegan,” what comes to mind? I had always assumed that it was a white hippie thing. You don't see many people of color when you do a google search of vegans. However, 2 of the 3 leading causes of death in the black community are stroke and heart disease. It doesn't have to be this way. Those who enjoy a mostly plant-based diet are 52% less likely to develop heart issues, but you don't have to give up your soul food. Black culture has been programmed to eat foods like chitlins, ham hocks, and neck bones in greens, but that doesn't have to define our blackness. Our ancestors didn't have a choice and they ate what they had to to survive slavery. They didn't have DoorDash. There's no reason for us in 2022 to keep eating like this. When I switched over to veganism myself, I was my grandmother's caregiver and I slowly made changes for her as well. After just a few months her labs were greatly improved, she had more energy, better memory, and she went off her diabetes medication. What you eat is supposed to nourish your body, not knock you out.I recommend a couple of documentaries for you this week: “The Invisible Vegan” and “Feel Rich; Health Is The New Wealth”You can search for vegan restaurants near you using https://www.happycow.net/Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? If you're lucky enough to be able to make the switch to veganism all at once, I'm proud of you! Some of us have to transition more slowly. In this episode we'll sort through the mind trash we tell ourselves about this vegan journey. Here are some tips I have if you need to move slowly:Slow and steady. Make one change at a time. When switching to meat replacements, don't forget the seasoning.Make sure you're eating enough calories. If you fall short, don't beat yourself up. You can start fresh at your next meal.Always be prepared for potlucks and eating out, even if that means keeping a stash of protein shakes at work.Be prepared for the unsolicited advice. People are waiting for you to fall short, but you don't have to let it get to you.Try a fruit and vegetable challenge with your family to get them more on board with you.Educate your kids, but let them make their own decisions when possible. You can search for vegan restaurants near you using https://www.happycow.net/Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? There's so many opinions going around about how hard it is to go vegan and cut things out of your diet. Today, I'm going to break down some of those for you. Be ready to take some notes, because I'll be tossing out some recipes!First up, dairy. Remember all the “Got Milk?” ads when we were kids? Did you ever wonder why so many kids are always bloated and gassy with stomach aches? Bingo. There are plenty of other ways to get enough calcium, like kale, collard greens, and chia seeds. Feel free to experiment and find which plant-based milks work best for you. I like the extra creamy oat milk, personally.Next, it's too expensive. Are there some vegan foods that are expensive? Yes. Are there some non-vegan foods that are expensive? Yes. People pay for what they want to pay for. The great thing is that more people want vegan food options so the demand is rising and that helps drive prices down. Many people starting out with a vegan diet look for the meat replacements, but there are plenty of ways to use vegetables like mushrooms in the same way you would use meat.Have you heard anyone tell you that vegan food doesn't taste good? Why wouldn't you use seasonings like you always did? What about protein? Beans are a great way to get your protein in, also soy, peas, broccoli spinach, nuts, and tofu. Some of my favorite brands are Impossible Meat, Thai Kitchen, Nature's Charm, and Beyond Sausage.Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? I never expected to become a vegan. I was always a very picky eater - think little kid birthday party food. Pizza, chicken nuggets, mac & cheese, fries, and never a vegetable. Living in San Antonio, everything was BBQ and our diet was very cheese heavy. My husband and I watched a few documentaries about the food industry and decided to make the change for good. He was able to change cold turkey, but I had to do it in stages.Back in 2017, I was a full time caregiver for my grandmother and my then-fiance had gotten laid off from his job. As fate would have it, I had already become the go-to baker in my family and had created some vegan donuts that were a hit at our church and everywhere we took them. The church convinced us to apply for the local new business accelerator, and our family and community came together to get our bakery, Southern Roots, off the ground.Don't want to give up your sweet tooth? It was during his third year at High school he began fiddling with DJ equipment. Soup learnt about the dazzling new music form hip-hop and began developing production skills on crude sampling equipment in luxurious 8bit, his computer had an amazing 2 megabytes of memory. He began digging for samples and was mostly enthralled by Rhythm and Blues, Soul, early electronic music and spoken word records. Soup has recently signed to the reformed Creative Vibes which is now under the umbrella of MGM Groove Merchants. Look out for a new album early in 2010. Soup has remixed Aria nominated Watussi as well as Cookin On 3 Burners, both of which are on the amazing Knowfoowl label. Soup has DJed in many clubs around Australia including a long residency at Tonic and Blue hotel and the legendary Sounds of Seduction with Jay Katz from the Mu Meson Archives. Check him out currently at The Marble Bar, Miss Peaches, Tokyo Sing Song, Palmer & Co, The Bank Upstairs, The Civic Hotel, Cafe Lounge and The Lansdowne Hotel. His sets are always eclectic but the common thread is soul. His first love is Rhythm and Blues but don’t be surprised to hear lots of different styles of music mixed and blended into his sets. Founding the Fonke Knomaads, Soup became producer, DJ and part time MC for the left field Sydney Hip-hop pioneers. They released a 5 track E.P. called "The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of..." on the now defunct label PoBoy records .Soup moved on to sign with influential Australian record label Creative Vibes . He soon released the groundbreaking Trip-Hop Album "Souperloops". Soup coined the term sampology and his tracks began popping up on several international compilations as well as having an album of the week on JJJ. This was the first local hip hop release to be given such an honour. The album was influential to local bands such as The Resin Dogs and Fretless. Further releases include collaborations with Fat Pizza star Sleek the Elite, the mini album "Eclectro" and the feature length album "From Anuva Planet" featuring Swollen Members and Gift of Gab from Blacalicious . Soup's last release was "Beatroot-The Edible Root of the Beat" which is out on Invada records. A label run by members of Katalyst and Portishead. *Featured guest mix begins @ 18:20* Welcome to the second-helping of Swerve in it's new format!! This time round we've got an absolute FIRE mix from our own stablemate Nait Sands aka Tom Penny! The Majestic Bogan Raver has been a stalwart of the Swerve crew since it's inception in 2013 and it's humble beginnings as just a few mates spinning tunes on a Saturday afternoon on Bondi Beach Radio as a pre-drinking warm up dance session for the weekend. As members came and went, inspiration peaked and waned, seasons warmed and cooled, there was only one constant, the one and only Tom Penny. The glue that holds the Swerve family together, the musical and spiritual heart of our collective has been honing his skills and building a gigantic library and knowledge of underground dance music for many years now, playing regular gigs and festivals around Sydney alongside his radio duties, holding down a monthly residency alongside Cosmo Jones as "Cosmic Boogie" at Cafe Lounge which has become a cult classic night for house and disco table top dancing, this is a DJ on the verge of being recognised for the incredible talent he is. Tom Penny in this feature mix brings for you an eclectic mix, seamlessly swerving through Balearic vibes, broken beats and acid workouts, showcasing his impeccable taste and mixing; always with the dance floor firmly at the forefront of his mind. ENJOY!

There are a lot of incomplete sentences and thoughts here which will probably be somewhat confusing for you. When I say a lot of people at my mercy, I mean that if I were less responsible, I could reveal stuff about people in my life that would render them vulnerable, and to a lot of people. I also end up giving a bit of detail about old mate when I said I wouldn't. What I mean is that I'm not going to go into as much depth about old mate as I said I would. I'm gonna let the songs reveal the big, weird stuff. Because there's a lot there, a lot of weird stuff, let me tell you. Moreover, it's unfair that I give my one perspective on him - me being a person with social clout - and refuse him a voice on the matter. Hence I try to offer other people's opinions about him. And then try to internet-diagnose sociopathy. WHO AM I. Also, the BNW character I was talking about was John. And then there are some introspective rambles. There are more questions than answers. Cover photo from www.benjaminriches.com. P.S. By 'purport' I meant 'import'. P.P.S. I didn't end up going to Cafe Lounge. I'm sorry I lied. Tom's show was real bloody good though.
Tom Penny B2B new Swerver Cosmo Jones all night long at Cafe Lounge. Four and a bit hours of eclectic selections. Good times!
Some of you may recognise Adam Neubauer from this year's World Barista Championship in Seattle--the 2015 Czech champion made it into the semifinals with his presentation highlighting every part of the coffee's journey. Adam is head barista of both the beautiful EMA Espresso Bar and Cafe Lounge in Prague - our host city for the first ever CoLab event with Barista Guild of Europe. Adam's talk, "Barista as psychologist", is an incredibly engaging exploration of how concepts from the field of psychology can be used to improve both barista skills and customer experience. Covering studies from psychology heavy-weights Lieberman and Seligman as well as those more directly applicable to the coffee industry (Velasco, Jones, King, and Spence), this is a talk that you won't want to miss, particularly if you spend any time behind bar!
