Today Leigh McMullan Abramson is here to discuss her debut novel, A Likely Story, which is perfect for anyone still missing the reading experience of Writers and Lovers. A Likely Story has received rave reviews and has been called “a literary page turner” and a “dishy, sophisticated story” and is certainly a standout debut.
I HAVE BEEN SEEN! Thanks to the annual book and author luncheon hosted by The Christamore House, I got to meet and invite Leigh McMullan Abramson to ijustreadthisbook—the podcast AND SHE SAID YES! I don't know if it's because Leigh is a debut author and I'm debuting in October or we simply get each other but she was so sweet and giving discussing her book, being an author, writing, and offering a better understanding of traditional publishing. As seen on Instagram, ijustreadthisbook, next episode of ijustreadthisbook—the podcast will feature Sadeqa Johnson author of ‘The House of Eve' on TUESDAY, MAY 23, 2023. EEEEEP! Zibby speaks to her longtime friend and debut author Leigh McMullan Abramson about A Likely Story, a wise and compulsively readable book-in-a-book about a struggling writer, her iconic novelist father, and the secrets she uncovers about him after her mother's sudden death. Leigh talks about her fascination with famous people (hence the narcissist, fame-obsessed father) and her career transition from litigation lawyer to MFA drop-out to published author. Finally, she shares her best advice for aspiring authors. This episode, we come out firing, dicussing the editing of Roald Dahl texts, which we are very much troubled by. So, you die and then they change your texts? That seems dangerous and a search for fool's gold. Children are not some delicate class that needs to be protected from all potential language harms. This leads seamlessly into a discussion of Tom Crewe's "The New Life," an important new piece of fiction exploring gay life in the late 1800s, and the language choices Crewe makes, which leads to "After Sappho," which Hannah was ensorceled by, and explores the lives of lesbian women. But there's more! Campus novels! Hannah read "My Last Innocent Year" and enjoyed its lack of easy answers; Sam read "Hell Bent" and thinks it's maybe not Leigh Bardugo's best; Hannah read "A Likely Story" and you know she's a sucker for books about writers (but it's a bad-dad story, which sorta sucks). Also: The return of Book Shop Book Club! You should come!

Baltimore's Laura Lippman has been publishing tales of suspense, and winning awards for them, for a quarter century. She doesn't take for granted the devious characters and puckered plots that shape her stories. "I keep trying to make this harder on myself. I think the scariest thing for me would be to sit at my computer and think: ‘This is easy, I know how to do this.' I want to be kind of terrified.” We readers are kind of terrified, too, as we make our way through the twelve short stories in Lippman's latest offering, a collection titled Seasonal Work. Healthy walks in Leakin Park. Common-wall brick houses on the west edge of town. Such common places, such ordinary things. And so many murders. Links: Thurs. As she came to know more about Virginia Hall, the World War II spy who outwitted Nazis occupying southern France, Annapolis writer Erika Robuck was intimidated. She wanted to like Hall, who had been raised in Baltimore. But Hall’s self-control and tenacity made her seem scary. Then Robuck’s research led her to a declassified war report. Robuck fell in love with the modest heroine and wrote the historical novel, “The Invisible Woman.” Erika Robuck will discuss the book with poet and playwright Greer McAllister in a virtual event a week next Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. through A Likely Story bookstore in Sykesville. Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrase LONG STORY SHORT and A LIKELY STORY:So in this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, long story short. This is a phrase we use when we're telling a story and when it's taking us way too long to tell the story. Sometimes when I'm telling Jen about something happened at work, sometimes she starts to look a little bit bored. And so instead of telling the whole story about what happened at work, I will just say, "Well, long story short, the boss is really happy with the job that I did." So if you're ever telling a story in English and the person looks like they're starting to not listen to you, if they look like they're starting to get a little bit bored, you can just say, "Long story short, my boss is really happy with me." Or long story short, the man stole the chocolate bar. You can also say to make a long story short. So there it is a longer phrase, but I often just say, long story short, the boss is really happy with me.The second English phrase that I wanted to teach you is the phrase a likely story. If you say to someone that's a likely story, or if you say likely story, it means you don't believe the story that they are telling you. Sometimes my kids will tell me about something that happened at school and Jen and I will say to each other, "Well, that's a likely story." Which means that we don't really believe the story that they've told us. They're not exactly lying, but we're not sure it's the whole truth. So a likely story is a story that someone has told you that you don't really believe. So once again, when you say long story short, it's something you say when you're telling a story and you wanna get to the end quicker. You say, "Well, long story short." And then you give the ending. And then a likely story is a story that you don't necessarily believe, necessarily believe.Hey, before I go to the next part of the video, I wanted to show you the clouds today. So let me just kind of pan the camera up for a sec. The clouds for some reason are in a beautiful pattern up there in the sky.So I thought you might want to see that. And now let's move on and look at a comment from one of the previous videos. This comment is from Ali Alfayed. And Ali says, "Hello Mr. Bob. Do you mind letting me know what the difference is between fill in and fill out? I am still perplexed between these two phrasal verbs. Thank you in advance." And then my answer is you can fill in a hole in the ground with dirt, you can fill out a form, you can also fill in a form. I hope that helps. But I'm not sure that does help. Does it, Ali? I mean, in some ways phrasal verbs can be more confusing the more you try to understand them. So let me just explain again, if you dig a hole in the ground and you want to put the dirt back in the hole, we would say you would fill in the hole. But fill out and fill in, when it comes to forms, like if I go to renew my license, I need to fill in a form. I can also say that I need to fill out a form. Now, it probably has a whole lot more, a whole lot of more meanings than that. Boy, I'm really having trouble speaking English myself today but definitely fill in, has to do with physically filling in a hole and then fill in and fill out is something you can use when you are looking at a forum.(Transcript shortened due to Podcast description length restrictions.)WANT MORE ENGLISH LESSONS? In our interview Anthony Bregman breaks down what exactly a good producer does, since everyone and their mother seems to call themselves a producer these days. Bregman is one of the rare film producers who is as dexterous at developing smart scripts as he is at securing investors and delivering hits. He is also one of the last few producers left in New York who transformed what it meant to make independent films with (and without) studios. Before founding Likely Story, Bregman was a partner at This is That Productions for 4 years, and spent 10 years as head of production at Good Machine. He's produced over 30 features, including FOXCATCHER, SENSE & SENSIBILITY, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, PLEASE GIVE, and ETERNAL SUNSHINE of the SPOTLESS MIND. Written under the joint pen name David Van Etten, Likely Story and its sequels All That Glitters and Red Carpet Riot (on sale July 9, 2009) tell the story of Mallory, just your typical teenage girl living in SoCal–except that her mother is an over-the-top soap opera diva and she's caught up in a hot love quadrangle with a teen soap hunk. After an explosive confrontation with the aforementioned diva (Mal's mom is so fab, her name is never mentioned!), Mallory blogs about how ridiculous and unbelievable the soap opera her mother stars on can be. Mal writes about how if she had the chance to write a soap, it would be realistic and find its drama in real life situations, in other words a likely story. Imagine Mal's surprise when the network gets wind of the blog post and decides to cancel their long-running daytime drama and greenlights a new teen soap based on Mallory's premise! Did we mention the soap the network cancels is the one Mal's Mommy Dreariest stars on?You'll want to tune in to hear Van Etten, Levithan and Ozanich talk about how the Likely Story book series came into being. Learn how OLTL ultimately facilitated Van Etten and Ozanich becoming writing partners when the soap hired Ozanich an intern. Find out how at a Gotham party one night, Levithan, author of such teen classics as Boy Meets Boy and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (with Rachel Cohn) and editor of the smash hit The Babysitters' Club novel series for Scholastic, became intrigued by the idea of helping the pair bring Mallory's story to life. You'll learn what it's like to write a book series with not one, or two authors, but three. Van Etten and Ozanich, while swearing none of the characters are based on anyone they've met in their soapy pursuits (Talk about a likely story!), reveal how their day jobs did in fact help color Mallory's world. Is Mallory speaking for every disgruntled soap opera fan with the impassioned rant she posts on her blog? What about when she actually lands her dream job? As Mallory quickly finds out writing a daily soap opera, while dealing with temperamental divas, a reluctant hottie leading man and network interference, isn't as easy as she once believed, are we getting a glimpse of what it's really like for the harried men and women who bring us our favorite soaps five-days-a-week? What about Van Etten, do he and other real life soap scribes ever log on to blogs like DC or message boards to read what we're saying about their work? If so how does it effect the writing process?Ozanich, also an acclaimed playwright (The Lightening Field) shares how he's dealt with some of the sticky situations Mallory finds herself facing in the Likely Story books, such as having to let down friends who thought they were a shoe-in for a role in one of his dramatic works. Onzanich also runs hilarious, SNL-worthy interference for his pal Van Etten, when Jamey and Luke try to pry a few juicy spoilers about ABC Daytime's hottest soap out of the Emmy-winning breakdown writer. Levithan, an admitted novice to the wonderful and wacky world of daytime soap operas, talks about how he brought to the table the basic tenets of characterization and story to help make even Mallory's more larger-than-life adventures ring true. The editor for Scholastic's PUSH imprint shares how the coming of age tale, despite its soapy flavor, is quite universal. Levithan also tells us how he feels about the success of the big screen adaptation of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and gives other writers a bit of advice on how to make their books readily adaptable for film. Speaking of adapting literary works for the screen, could a Likely Story television series or film project be in the works? Tune in to find out.
