In this episode of The Burleson Box, Dr. Dustin Burleson welcomes Dr. Erinne Kennedy, Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Integrated Learning at Kansas City University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Kennedy shares her fascinating journey into dentistry, which was heavily influenced by her family of dental professionals and her passion for public health. She recounts the pivotal moment when a mentor encouraged her to apply for a dental public health specialty—at Harvard—within a two-week deadline, a decision that shaped the course of her career. Our discussion covers the pressing issue of burnout in the dental profession, with Dr. Kennedy offering valuable insights backed by research. She explains how excessive working hours, lack of adequate recovery time, and administrative burdens contribute to burnout among healthcare professionals. Using a compelling analogy comparing work schedules to endurance training, she illustrates the importance of balancing workload and rest. She also introduces the concept of "resilience confetti," small, joyful activities that help dental professionals maintain well-being and engagement during their workday.Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Burleson explore strategies that dental teams can implement to create healthier work environments, such as rethinking office hours, planning meaningful time off, and fostering a culture that prioritizes both patient care and team well-being. They discuss innovative scheduling models, including the effectiveness of three-day, 12-hour shifts, and how such models can improve job satisfaction and reduce burnout.A significant part of the conversation focuses on the future of preventive dentistry. Dr. Kennedy shares her excitement about advancements in salivary testing, peptides, and microbiome management, predicting that these innovations will reshape how dental professionals approach prevention. She explains how new materials and techniques, such as peptide-based remineralization and nanoparticle technology, could reduce the need for surgical interventions and lead to better long-term patient outcomes. As an educator, Dr. Kennedy highlights the importance of emotional intelligence and leadership training in dental schools. She describes the Thrive program at KCU, a two-day workshop designed to help students develop resilience, goal-setting skills, and emotional maturity. She stresses that fostering a mindset of adaptability and openness to unexpected opportunities is crucial for career growth.Wellness Resources:The Genius of Athletes by Noel Brick Ph. Do you believe acquisition leads to opportunities.  Do you have the wherewithal to have the business spirit to succeed as an entrepreneur? In 2015 Adrian Knight left a job I loved to start a business that helped senior professionals transition out of corporate life into franchise business ownership. The next seven years was a phenomenal journey of self-discovery, where I got to speak to many talented individuals while learning how to build a business. Adrian Knight buys and sells businesses for a living (and in the process he has built a multi-million children's education group from the ground up - which was largely inspired by his 4-year old daughter). However, he spends the majority of his time working on his own personal growth and mindset, which he undoubtedly recognizes as the secret sauce of his business success to date. Adrian has appeared in multiple publications on M&A, entrepreneurship, small business growth and personal development. He regularly speaks at national and international M&A conferences, and has mentored over 50 aspiring acquisition entrepreneurs on how to grow or exit their existing business through M&A.. In the last couple of years, Adrian has acquired and turnaround multiple companies, including a national franchise chain which was on the brink of bankruptcy, taking it from a 6-figure loss to a 6-figure profit within 12-months.  He joined me this week to tell me more. Mary Donovan is the Assistant Dean for Standardized Patients (SPs) & Experiential Learning at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. She has served at Georgetown as administrative director and educator for the Integrated Learning and Simulation Center since 2007, providing medical students with clinical learning and assessment opportunities through SP education and simulation. These methodologies use professionally trained actors, retired teachers and others to portray specific patients and families in a broad spectrum of healthcare experiences for learners – a safe space to develop clinical and communication skills and receive feedback from the patient perspective. Prior to Georgetown, she held a faculty position as senior SP trainer at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and as academic-affairs staff at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Prior to her work in med-ed experiential learning, she managed a forum of women in international trade and diplomacy, taught as adjunct faculty on Georgetown's main campus in the mid-90s, served as marketing manager for a B2B organization, and as chapter liaison for a national trade association. In the early days of online journal search-and-retrieval and library automation, she worked as a researcher at the National Library of Medicine, Library of Congress and other libraries. While in college and beyond, she worked for the UVa Hospital Education system, teaching children with disabilities from birth to age 21. Mary presented (virtually) at the Ottawa Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a finalist for the IMU-RHIME Award for Innovation in March of 2020, and won an innovation award for her presentation at the international Association for Standardized Patient Educators in 2011. From 2016-18 she served as Chair for the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of med-school clinical-skills programs. In 2016, GUMC honored her as a “bridge-builder” in the Ongoing Engagement and Consultation initiative. She recently joined the editorial board for the Journal of Health Design, published in Melbourne, Australia. She joined the Screen Actors Guild in 1999; speaking roles to-date have landed on the cutting-room floor, but she (or her old Honda Civic) can be seen as background in various TV and film productions. Mary's artwork has sold in art fairs and hospital exhibitions, and through personal commissions. Her days as a publically performing singer and guitarist are largely in the past, but she dreams of resurrecting half-written original songs someday. Other work that will never retire – writing short stories, children's books, a memoir, a novel and personal essays. Meanwhile, she launched a blog/website in early 2021: marymuffindonovan.com She received her BA in English from the University of Virginia, MA in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University and MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Does Sleep Strengthen Unintentional Memories? With Abdulrahman, Erin and Kaylie

On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Abdulrahman Alharthi, Erin Sawyer, and Kaylie Williams.Abdulrahman, Erin, and Kaylie are all undergraduates at MSU and work as research assistants in Dr. Kimberly Fenn's Sleep and Learning Lab. Abdulrahman Alharthi is a 4th-year undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Laboratory Science with a concentration in Clinical Chemistry and minor in Leadership in Integrated Learning. Erin Sawyer is a 2nd-year undergraduate student and Alumni Distinguished scholar in the Honors College studying Psychology and Data Science, with minors in Social Science Quantitative Data Analysis and Japanese. Kaylie Williams is a 4th-year undergraduate student pursuing a major in Psychology with minors in Health Promotion and Cognitive Science. This work was conducted under the direction of Elle Wernette, a 4th-year graduate student. In this episode, the three undergraduates discuss a line of research that focuses on the relationship between sleep and memory. After memories are first formed, or encoded, they remain in a vulnerable state, subject to decay or distortion. Consolidation processes help strengthen memories against these vulnerabilities, and some of these processes take place during sleep. Prior research has shown that sleep, specifically slow-wave sleep, consolidates memory for information that is actively studied, or intentionally encoded. They recently found that sleep also consolidates some memories that are incidentally encoded, which are memories that are formed when an individual works with but does not actively try to remember information. Their data suggested that the extent to which memory is consolidated during sleep may be based on the strength of the memory traces. To further explore this, they investigated the hypothesis that sleep consolidates strong, but not weak, memories after incidental encoding. They also sought to determine which components of sleep contribute to this mnemonic benefit.  These results give us insight into the relationship between sleep and memory consolidation, showing that sleep may consolidate more information than was previously thought. Sleep not only helps us remember the information we are intentionally trying to remember, but also seems to help us remember useful information that we encounter in passing. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. He contributed a section to an anthology published by the MSU libraries. Kenneth’s mission is to connect people through story telling.  He is passionate about the power of shared experiences.  He has spent his life writing and sharing stories and learned early that, even when people seem very different, they can connect when they see themselves through someone else’s experiences. One of his biggest challenges was dealing with the loss of his grandfather, who was always his biggest cheerleader.  He also struggles to maintain a good sense of his worth.  He works to know his value without feeling arrogant. To overcome tough times he prayers every day.  His favorite verse is Luke 12:32.  He knows that he should not have fear.  God seeks to bless him beyond what he can imagine. He encourages others to learn to love themselves and says that no one should curb their brilliance out of fear of fueling someone else’s insecurities.  –Be Boss- For A Free Relationship Renovation Roadmap Tool Visit: defeatthedrama.com/roadmap

There are a lot of incomplete sentences and thoughts here which will probably be somewhat confusing for you. When I say a lot of people at my mercy, I mean that if I were less responsible, I could reveal stuff about people in my life that would render them vulnerable, and to a lot of people. I also end up giving a bit of detail about old mate when I said I wouldn't. What I mean is that I'm not going to go into as much depth about old mate as I said I would. I'm gonna let the songs reveal the big, weird stuff. Because there's a lot there, a lot of weird stuff, let me tell you. Moreover, it's unfair that I give my one perspective on him - me being a person with social clout - and refuse him a voice on the matter. Hence I try to offer other people's opinions about him. And then try to internet-diagnose sociopathy. WHO AM I.   Also, the BNW character I was talking about was John. And then there are some introspective rambles. There are more questions than answers.
