Little by Little Homeschool - Homeschooling, Motherhood, Homemaking, Education, Family
Have you thought about the fact that your children are home with you and a bit of a captive audience at this point? It's true! And that means you can focus not only on academics, but on building their character too. Which means that to do that, it needs to be a focus for your daily lessons. With all the years of homeschooling and launching two of my children into the world, I have zero regrets of the time we focus on character training. And some days, it was the main goal for the day because it mattered more than the geography lesson. Join Dr. Kathy Koch and Zan as they discuss why character training is so important in the lives of our children. As Dr. Kathy says, “Character matters, and it determines destiny.” At the basis of character training is the commitment to know our children, to study them–and understand what their strengths and weaknesses are, what makes them feel alive and what discourages them. Kids have to feel known. They have to feel visible and acknowledged in our space for who they are. It's so significant. This is the bedrock of excellent parenting–and excellent parenting leads to excellent homeschooling. You're sure to be encouraged by this uplifting conversation!SHOW NOTEShttps://zantyler.com/podcast/070-kathy-kochLISTEN AND SUBSCRIBEJoin Zan Tyler and a special guest each week for real encouragement, engaging stories, and practical wisdom for surviving and thriving on the homeschool journey.YouTube: https://bit.ly/3ZjfXnWApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3QmTyC3Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3vLipG2CONNECT WITH ZAN & FOLLOW HER ON SOCIALWebsite: https://zantyler.com/podcastInstagram: https://instagram.com/zan_tyler_podcastFacebook: https://facebook.com/ZanTylerHomeschoolTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@thezantylerpodcastHomeschooling and Character Training Go Hand-in-Hand | Dr. Kathy Koch | Ep. 070
Editor's Note, by Art Middlekauff In April 1936, “418 members and friends of the Parents' National Educational Union, and 268 children being educated in the Parents' Union School” converged upon Ambleside in England's lovely Lake District for an extraordinary conference.[1] It was “The Jubilee Conference for Parents and Teachers and The Children's Gathering,” celebrating the … The post Character Training first appeared on Charlotte Mason Poetry.
Editor's Note: Antoinette Devonshire was born in 1893 and arrived at the House of Education in 1915.[1] As a student of Charlotte Mason herself, Antoinette seems to have particularly excelled in French: her “Notes of Lessons” on French reading was published in the November 1915 Parents' Review. Someone who is fully of the world will not notice the chains of evil until you attempt to break free. You see in a world designed by satanism, what you DON'T do, what you say No to, what you Resist, carries much more weight in your souls evolution, that what Good you DO. Both matter, however turning away from evil and resisting temptation is paramount in polarising to the Good. You will be the Devil's slave for as long as you allow entry into your mind and you engage in his playground. What you might think is just a bit of fun is where you need to be conscious in discipline because those small doors open access to the endless pit. Like when someone goes to a party thinking they'll be able to resist all the evil yet end up drunk, aggressive and then committing a wrong doing that they had no business doing had they have abstained from the temptation. This is the true tests of character. It's easy to claim you are good if you've never felt the strength of evil when you resist it. Resistance to evil and ultimately abstinence from all that is not of our Creator is the example and the way. That's why it's called the straight and narrow door, not the wide gaping grey maze of immorality.

Family life is a spiritual calling and involves spiritual warfare and often that warfare simply involves being faithful to our duties each day without wavering. Discipline is one of those very important parental duties and requires discernment, fortitude, and perseverance to do well. We live in a culture that doesn't value children or the raising of children. God's perspective is the polar opposite. He tells us we are investing in eternal souls and not just those of our children, but our grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all those whose lives they touch. Let's roll up our sleeves and get to work! Listen in for encouragement and some examples of practical discipline! We always say that character comes before the curriculum, but that can be easier said than done. In the day to day, it can be a real struggle to actually lay down the math or reading to deal with the character issues in our kids. But what if we saw character training for what it REALLY is? In today's podcast, I will be sharing a big picture perspective with a biblical foundation to encourage you to take the time to reach the hearts of your children! One thing I forgot to mention in the podcast is that as our kids exhibit behavior that indicates a need for character training, it's so important to find our first (especially if they are younger) if there is a need that isn't being met: are they hungry, thirsty, tired? Might we be over scheduling our family life, schooling or activities? This isn't about giving our kids excuses for misbehaving, but about being responsible as parents to be fair and just in our actions. theunhurriedhomeschooler.thinkific.com/ (Mentoring Course) The Unhurried Homeschooler on Amazon Florida Parent Educators Association-Homeschool Convention May 23-25, 2019 Scriptures mentioned in the podcast: Luke 6:39, 40 Ephesians 6 2 Corin. 10:3-5 Deut 11:16-21

My mom actually used to teach customer service to corporate employees. So, I grew up with a very strong sense of the importance of good etiquette. Every woman appreciates having a door held open for her or having a gentleman offer her his seat in a crowded waiting area. Good manners and etiquette seem to be missing from many in younger generation, but if we are intentional about how we are raising our kids we can bring it back. Long live chivalry! In her book, Knights in Training: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys, Heather Haupt lays out a fun and practical plan for how to teach our boys to valuable lessons in character, etiquette, and manners. I love finding books like this. It's filled with great parenting tips about how to combat entitlement and the messages our boys are getting from society about their worth. I know you are going to appreciate this episode. ON A “SIMPLY JOYFUL” NOTE Heather says she likes to streamline everything and plan in batches. For example, she has only one day that she does laundry because she can’t handle thinking about it any other day of the week. She can’t be bogged down with the details because otherwise, it will take the joy out of life for her. I also share a bit about how I have been meal planning for 13 people in my home! …Help Support the Simply Joyful Podcast! Welcome to another Wondering Wednesday podcast episode! In this audio presentation, Donna Reish (of Character Ink Press and Raising Kids With Character) answers questions about faith and character training for young children. Donna begins with the Five W’s and One H of Character Training, reminding parents that we must first have it in our hearts before we can give it to our children. She then delves into laying some foundations with toddlers. Finally, she talks about the four places and times that Deuteronomy tells us to teach our kids God’s Word and ways: when you rise up; when you sit in your house; when you walk by the way; and when you lie down. She gives examples and activities for each time period—focusing on getting to our children’s hearts with unconditional love, intentionality, prioritizing, and selflessness.
Donna Reish, of Character Ink Press and Raising Kids With Character Parenting Seminar, bring you this Wondering Wednesday podcast episode in which she discusses ways to keep your family and your children close during intense training times. This episode follows the three previous ones about the 4 D's of Behavior, Dealing With Heart Issues of Tweens, and Character Training of Routine Behaviors. Donna gives 10 tips for affecting your child's heart and staying close in your relationship during times of intense training. She describes some of the things that you must consider that your child is feeling during this time as well as the effect that this could have on your entire family. She gives some practical suggestions for keeping things fun, upbeat, and unified even during difficult times and behavior problems.
Donna Reish, of Raising Kids With Character parenting seminar, Character Ink Press, and Language Lady, brings you another episode of Wondering Wednesday podcast about tweens (though it certainly can apply to elementary kids and teens too!). In the following up to her Four D’s of Behavior and Dealing With Heart Issues of Tweens, Donna explains the difference between Four D’s discipline and Character Training/Routine Behaviors consequences. She then gives a systematic order to be sure that you, as the parent, are doing all that you can to help your child succeed in whatever areas you are having problems (not finishing work, unclean room, dilly dallying, etc.). She explains Kevin Leman’s Reality Discipline and teaches how to apply this to character/routine behaviors. Finally, she gives some solutions to these behaviors, including RKWC Consequence Pies in which the child helps choose the consequences and these consequences are carried out in a black and white (no gray area!) manner that the child knows is coming.
Donna Reish, author of four curriculum series (including Character Quality Language Arts, Meaningful Composition, and Really Writing) and co-author/co-presenter of the parenting seminar (Raising Kids With Character) tackles a reader’s question about when to give “chances”/when to take action/allow consequences to fall where they may and when to give grace—or as Donna puts it “mulligans”-- to our kids. She takes a look at what some have told her is their take on “grace-based” parenting (it isn’t forgoing training or consequences altogether!) and applies this to character training. Follow Donna as she describes her family’s walleyball game and explains why they gave “mulligans” to the ones they did in that game and why others did not get “mulligans.” And finally, she applies these walleyball “mulligans” to “mulligans” in parenting.
In this episode, Donna Reish, author of the “Raising Kids With Character” parenting seminar and fifty curriculum books for homeschools and Christian schools, answers parents’ questions about toddlers. This is a follow up to Donna’s “What to Do With a Wonderful One Year Old” episode. In this episode, Donna gives you two tests to consider in dealing with problems with fifteen to thirty-six month old toddlers-one test for you (the car seat test) and one test for your toddler (the high five test). Donna also tackles many toddler behaviors that you want to stop, including slapping, hitting his head on the floor or crib, saying no, throwing food, getting into things, throwing fits, not coming when called, and not eating/getting enough “real” food. (For information about Character Ink’s seminar terminology and phrases, listen to this podcast episode. For more about toddlers, listen to this podcast episode.)
Donna Reish, from Character Ink publishing and Raising Kids With Character, answers parents’ questions about children and chores. Donna introduces some foundational diligence training tips that have helped her in her home management for over twenty-five years. She then introduces toddlers and preschoolers habits and chores and then branches out chore sessions, dividing up chores, paying for chores, and much more!
Anne Marie Ezzo shared a blog post on her Facebook page recently that was authored by Mark Gregston. The Honest Truth about Dishonesty by Mark Gregston ”A recent Report Card on the Ethics of American Youth, by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, shows that 61% of teens admit to lying to a teacher about something important, and a whopping 76% admitted to lying to their parents last year. Another study, this one conducted in Britain, indicates that an overwhelming 84% of teens said they’ve regularly copied information from the Internet and pasted it right into their homework. But it wasn’t necessarily those numbers that shocked me. What really rocked me back on my heels was that this recent study of American teenagers reported that while over 50% of teenagers admitted lying, cheating, or stealing within that last year, 93% of those same kids said they are “satisfied with their personal ethics and character.” In addition, 81% of those teenagers said that “when it comes to doing what’s right, they are better than most people they know.” The point Mrs. Ezzo made was that (I quote), “While this blog post is addressed to parents of teens, parents with younger children would be wise to heed the thoughts expressed and thereby wisely help to prevent this issues from developing in your own home. Remember "begin as you mean to go" if you desire to have an honest child, then even those 'creative stories' need to have boundaries, we want to set our younger children [let alone teens] for success and direct help keep them on the right path.” Mark went on to offer advice to parents on how to shift the trends so that teens embrace the virtue of truth over the norm of lying. Mark’s very first recommendation to “Monitor Media” steps into my area of expertise so I want to expand on his advice. We all know that we can’t monitor every single thing that our kids do. Even if we try we have to be realistic and admit that if we are faced with a kid that is already characterized by dishonesty, deception, and lying then they probably will take steps to avoid our efforts to monitor. How many of us can actually keep up with our kids in terms of technology anyway? I have shared this example before, but I believe it is worth repeating again and again. Technology security is more about behavior than the technology! You can try to monitor and control your kid’s Internet or TV access, but you are only treating the symptom. You must get to the heart if the issue and then end result will be that your child will self regulate their Internet, TV, movie, and gaming activity. They are going to get there soon enough so you might as well teach them early. Teach Your Kids to Use the TV Remote Sounds crazy doesn't it? One of the things we joke about as parents is how much more kids understand about the DVD/DVR and how to operate it. But do they really understand the most important features? As a parent, the two most important buttons on a remote are the “Last Channel” button (sometimes called a Recall or last) and the “MUTE” button. That’s right. Yet, summer is also a great time to work on healthy family habits: Chores, *Character Training, and a daily quiet time with the Lord! I receive a lot of questions about kids and devotions…when did my kids start, what did that look like, and do I have devotionals that I recommend? Today, my oldest son, Josiah, joins me to talk about all of these things. Josiah shares what he remembers about starting off doing devotions as a boy, and he shares some Scriptures that motivate him to spend time with the Lord. We also discuss the role of a devotional to go along with the Bible and prayer each day. And then!...Josiah shares a special announcement about his brand new devotional for teens! It's called “The Gospel in 30 Days” and he has been working on it over the last couple years.
