We believe alcohol is required for vacations, unwinding, dealing with stress, celebrating, and socializing. We have built up powerful associations in our brains to reinforce these beliefs through dopamine and repetition. After you get sober, facing life without alcohol can feel impossible. Everything reminds you of alcohol. You start to notice how prevalent it is on TV and in movies. In this episode, I'm explaining how the brain builds associations with alcohol, how that gets worse while we stay in the back and forth, and how we break down these associations after getting sober. Check out my Brain Break Bundle! As a secondary English teacher, I used to struggle with the idea of brain breaks. The pressure to get through content and prepare students for exams felt too overwhelming to justify stopping for “games.”But my classroom culture was suffering. Students were stressed, disengaged, and burnt out—especially during heavy writing sessions leading up to exams. So I decided to try something different. When I started embedding brain breaks into my lessons, I immediately saw positive shifts.Students focused better and produced stronger writing.Transitions became smoother because I could use movement-based games instead of battling student resistance.Apathy decreased, and energy in the room improved.Rapport and community strengthened as brain breaks became a consistent, positive routine. The result? Better engagement, improved learning, and a classroom that felt lighter, happier, and more productive.Listen in as I discuss:Why brain breaks matter in secondary classrooms. Overcoming the pressure to “just keep going.”Three types of brain breaks you can use today. Upregulation, downregulation, and movement-based games. How brain breaks improve engagement, learning, and classroom culture. Cori suddenly pivots to surprise Nina with an unexpected interview about her lifelong mental health affliction and the medication she takes to manage it. What is the difference between grief and depression? Should you “feel your feelings” when your feelings are broken? What is serotonin? Which is a better theory of the brain: etchings or bike gears? We know very little about brains, which raises another question: can we talk to an SSRI expert? This is actually a pretty good discussion about depression and antidepressants, which is why we made it its own episode (the previous half is Episode 163: Cori's Boobs Break The Internet.)Link:Back on ‘Zac by Nina: https://blog.ninapaley.com/2025/02/08/back-on-zac/ Get full access to Heterodorx Podcast at heterodorx.substack.com/subscribe
Episode 152 centers on a lively conversation between Kevin and Dr. Kate Oland Galligan as they trace her path from a curious undergrad to a passionate fascia educator and clinician. The duo challenges old perceptions of fascia, recounting stories from early lab experiences where fascia was simply “ripped out,” and contrasting them with new insights on its dynamic, interconnected nature. They reveal how subtle fascial restrictions can cause significant clinical symptoms—linking pelvic imbalances to jaw pain—and explore the emerging field of mind-body connections in fascial therapy. 0:00:00 | Introduction 0:00:55 | Introducing Kate Introducing Fascia 0:17:06 | Fascia Mini Lesson * 0:20:00 | Rip That Fascia Out! 0:37:14 | Get Ready for Annual Debriefing 0:39:00 | The Hip Bone is Connected to the Jaw Bone 1:03:08 | We're on Substack! * 1:06:13 | Mind-Body Connections 1:21:45 | Staying Connected * Breaks ★ If you cannot see or activate the audio player, go to: theAPprofessor.org/podcast-episode-152.html

What if parenting focused on teaching our children self-regulation? Imagine if they knew how to advocate for themselves and understood the unique ways they learn best. In today's episode, Paige welcomes Dr. Kelly Cagle, host of the Parenting IQ podcast, author of God's Promises as Waves, and devoted mom to three boys: Levi, Titus, and Micah, alongside her husband, Josh. Holding a PhD in Education, Dr. Kelly is passionate about guiding parents to turn everyday moments into powerful learning opportunities, equipping their children with both the heart and mind to thrive as lifelong learners. This is an encouraging and impactful conversation for parents with all school-aged (or soon-to-be school-aged) children. Paige's TakeawaysDuring different seasons, certain things deserve a no, (even if they're good things).Filter and focus! If it's not part of the vision, filter it out. Your child needs time to REST and CREATE. Take a brain break!Physically remove yourself from your task to reset your brain.Move your body! Stretch, do jumping jacks, run stairs, etc.Teach your child to recognize their body cues.Kid have the wiggles? Let them know they can get up and dance, move around, and reset their body. Teach them how to advocate for this need, especially in a school setting. E.g. In Episode 151 of The A&P Professor podcast, host Kevin Patton is joined by Jennifer Stokes, Rachel Hopp, and Abbey Breckling to discuss the Anatomy and Physiology Student Accommodations Handbook. This handbook released by the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), provides instructors with evidence-based suggestions and best practices for making A&P labs and classrooms more inclusive and accessible for all students. Developed by a HAPS subcommittee, the handbook offers guidance on accommodating students with a wide range of needs, from physical limitations to visual or hearing impairments. The goal is to help instructors identify meaningful alternatives to standard lab protocols that promote student success. The handbook is organized by common accommodation requests and includes sections on universal design principles, making accommodations for temporary conditions, and incorporating tactile and visual aids. The HAPS committee plans to regularly update the handbook as new strategies and technologies emerge. 0:00:00 | Introduction 0:00:48 | How It Started 0:19:33 | Blue Sky's From Now On * 0:20:38 | You Don't Know You Need It Until You Do 0:32:57 | Brain Break * 0:35:36 | Opportunities for Learning 0:47:33 | Show Business * 0:51:03 | Exploring the Handbook 1:02:44 | Staying Connected * Breaks ★ If you cannot see or activate the audio player, go to: theAPprofessor.org/podcast-episode-151.html

We talked last week about STRESS and its impact on our health and our relationship with our families. I challenged you to be more aware of your breath and take the “Moment to Breathe” challenge, and a few of you chimed in after trying it that it's really working!!Personally I found being aware of my breath and its ability to control my bodily reaction to stress to be life changing and revolutionary! Why? Because I can control my breath, and in this world where too often things feel out of control, that's a game-changer.In part 2 today, we'll discuss how to close the gap between demand and capacity…it turns out that stress ISN'T what happens to you that's stressful, it's a combination of what happens and how capable you are in reacting to it. (Hint: Responding is better than reacting anyway. More in the video!)I'll teach my Stress Mastery instructor's BFF method – you've learned the “B” and now for the rest! Dr. Heidi Hanna is the director of the American Institute of Stress and absolutely brilliant at making stress positive fuel for change, plus keeping everything easy to understand. I hope I share her information well as I'm certified as a “Stress Mastery Educator"!Show NotesTake this free quiz to find out how stressed you are.Free recharge suggestions and meditations. The Inner Balance sensorOur sleep hacks post on Kitchen StewardshipCheck out the free Stress Mastery for Busy Moms Challenge here! During a speech this week, Donald Trump got completely derailed from his talking points when a fly flew near his head. His brain proceeded to completely break as he then went on a deranged tangent about other times he encountered flies, and then he lied to the crowd claiming that you can't buy flypaper anymore. The whole incident was about as bizarre as possible, and just gives more proof that Trump's mental competency is virtually non-existent.Also, during a recent interview with Kari Lake, Eric Trump praised his father, Donald, for burying his mother, Ivana, on a golf course in a grave that hasn't been tended to since she was placed there. Eric said that this was proof that his father has a "heart of gold," even though it is obvious that Donald placed Ivana there for tax purposes, and not because he "wanted to be close" to her. FInally, shortly after Judge Tanya Chutkan placed a limited gag order on Donald Trump on Monday, the former President took to social media to rail against the judge and the so-called "witch hunt" before announcing that he'll appeal the ruling. Trump, and later his campaign, claimed that the Biden administration was attempting to silence them, and these statements together could actually be a violation of the overall order.

The average attention span is 2-3 times a student's age. So with that in mind, how do you keep them from losing focus in a 90-minute class? This episode is all about how to use brain breaks and other strategies for maintaining focus. We start the episode discussing how long our classes are, and in the case of longer periods, why it is necessary to take breaks if you want students to stay productive, and why it's unrealistic to expect someone to be attentive for the duration of a class. We talk about the need for "predictable variety" as a way to keep students on their toes (9:00), before actually going over some brain breaks, which serve as "palette cleansers for the brain" (14:00). Then we discuss how to keep variety in the classroom even without breaks that go off topic (23:15). Joseph gives a funny story from coaching soccer, and then we play the Numbers Game with an incredibly close finish.
