From exploring how sexuality intersects with addiction to understanding the deep support that the sober community provides, this episode is not one to miss.Key Takeaways:Charlie Gray on Vulnerability: Hear how Charlie used his memoir, At Least I'm Not a Frog, to be open and raw about his darkest moments, and why he believes it's important to be honest about the "dirty" parts of addiction to help others feel less alone.Danielle (Daisy Soul Child): In this clip, Danielle talks about coming out as a lesbian in the Black community and how hiding her true identity played a role in her addiction. She offers powerful advice on how accepting and loving yourself can be a key to recovery.Michael from Happy Without The Hooch: Michael shares how being gay impacted his relationship with alcohol, especially in a world where LGBT socializing often revolves around bars. Editorial and commercial fashion and celebrity photographer Charlie Gray joins the podcast from his London studio to talk about how he went from a kid growing up in Cambridge with a love of skateboarding and browsing the artwork of the records in his dad's music store, to shooting some of the most recognizable faces in the world and creating a style of celebrity fashion work that would set him apart in a very competitive niche and earn him a spot on the roster of the renowned LGA agency and an ambassadorship with Leica. During our conversation Charlie also talks about the early creative influence both skateboarding and music had on his life, how he fell in love with the reportage style of the Magnum photographers while at university, and how he began to apply that to his own pursuit of fashion and celebrity work. We also discuss his approach to shooting celebrities, how being a nice person is a trait to be cherished the most, and the advice he gives to others chasing their own creative dreams. Charlie Gray is a mid-30's, white, gay man living in Midwest America. For years he suffered as a high-functioning alcoholic experiencing chronic relapse. On July 8, 2020, Charlie entered sobriety and began penning his memoir as part of his healing process - At Least I'm Not The Frog: A Zany Memoir of Alcoholism & Recovery. His book begins shortly after he graduated from Drury University at the age of twenty-two, bright-eyed, hopeful, and eager to become an Academy-Award winning actor. At the time, he was ravenous for experience, which he found, albeit not quite as he anticipated. Wandering from corporate banking to global travel, always with a bottle of vodka in tow, Charlie became privy to the glittering underbelly of an addictive lifestyle. Fearing this was his ultimate fate, he fled to a series of no less than 54 rehabs, detoxes, and psychiatric wards - all of which is recollected in his book. At Least I'm Not The Frog is currently trending on Amazon's Hot New Releases in the substance abuse category. Charlie resides in his quaint hometown in Missouri, with his family, friends, and cat, Klaus. These days, he can usually be found searching for epic, inspiring moments or updating his blog on maintaining sobriety and clarity, aptly titled At Least I'm Not The Frog II.Episode ResourcesThe Beacon Website | https://thebeaconhelps.org/Connect with Charlie GrayInstagram | @hismajestycharles3rdCharlie's Book | At Least I'm Not The Frog: A Zany Memoir of Alcoholism & Recovery | Available on AmazonBlog | At Least I'm Not The Frog II - BlogConnect The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastPodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastPodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifeYouTube | The Courage to Change PlaylistLionrock ResourcesCoffee & Coffee Alternatives | lionrock.life/shop-productsSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings
This week; I'm chatting to Charlie; a mummy to 3 children and a wife to Simon, with a background of fashion, retail, interiors, holiday rentals, and childcare and a love of homemaking, cooking, gardening, animals, exercise and all things practical to make our lives' easier. She is full of energy and love getting stuck in! Whether that's in the garden or cooking up a feast! Organising a party or greeting B & B guests! Or watching a good movie while tackling a pile of ironing! (fitted sheets are her speciality!) Over the years, with a varied background and a wonderful mother that taught her so much, she has picked up lots of different skills, which is exactly why she started Ask Charlie – She is acutely aware that a lot of these practical skills that were passed down from parents have been lost over the passage of time. And without home economics lessons being taught any more, I hope with Ask Charlie; you feel empowered! Every day Charlie am learning new ways to do things and hopes to share this with you. If you haven’t heard of Menspire they are a men’s grooming education program that started out of a shop in the UK with their sights set on world domination. Some people think it is the evolution of men’s grooming and some feel like it is hurting the industry and detracting from what traditional barbering is all about. I’ll admit as a barber I’ve had my reservations about it. But, I’ll also admit that most of my experiences that I judged it by have stemmed from the relative arrogance of people I run into who have taken the course... not from the people who have created it. Kind of like judging a religion by its followers instead of its doctrine.... So I decided to sit down with Charlie Gray one of the co-creators of Menspire and asked him what all of the fuss is about...

On today's episode, Duane talks with Charlie Gray about his journey of hope and resiliency through his toxic relationship with vodka and the one thing that allowed him to stay sober. In his memoir, At Least I'm Not The Frog: A Zany Memoir of Alcoholism & Recovery, Charlie Gray tells his story of being a recovering alcoholic sharing his experience of addiction, relapse, and recovery.Living as a high-functioning alcoholic for 11 years, his plan was to keep his job, make some good money, and just drink his way through. This went on until, physically, he could no longer do so. The way he puts it is, “You can only drink a gallon and a half of vodka every day or so for so long before even a young man's body begins to shut down.” The root cause behind such a behavior was his early childhood trauma from losing his mother. He was so focused on creating a life of purpose in honor of his mother that he never dreamed addiction would be something on the table for him. But then began 11 years of a toxic relationship with vodka.Charlie attended a number of treatment centers across the country. Over the years, he had gathered all of the tools necessary for recovery. He was receptive to advice on what to do to better himself; he just didn't implement it. However, when the body says no more and your pain is too great, there comes a point when you decide to do something. One day, Charlie just woke up ready to receive the love and the message from his higher power that if he would just spend a little time trying the practices he had learned through those years, he would stay sober. And so, that's what he did.In this episode, you will hear:Dealing with the loss of a motherThe brain as a powerful tool for copingThe huge disconnect between the heart and the headCharlie's decision to use the tools he learned to stay soberA daily struggle to not succumb to the cravingHow writing has helped him recoverKey Quotes:[04:36] - “I was so focused on creating a life of purpose in honor of my mother that I never dreamed that addiction would be something on the table for me.”[05:54] - “Your brain is such a powerful tool without you knowing it."[09:47] - “Thinking that you can control it – that's another great example of how clever our minds can be and the rationale they can create when you have proven 1000 times that you cannot control it.”[12:39] - “You can only drink a gallon and a half of vodka every day or so, for so long before even a young man's body begins to shut down."[20:38] - "It really wasn't until about a month or two after I'd been sober, that I began writing, and that is how I was able to stay sober through the rest of the pandemic.” [24:14] - “A lot of terrible things have happened to me. But I overcame them and I'm not the frog.”[32:57] - "Keep trying that even when it feels like you're never going to find your identity or you're never going to find your sobriety, it is out there."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
