On September 1, 2021, E&P reported that The Chief-Leader, the 100+-year-old, family-owned NYC weekly, whose nearly 30,000 subscribers are almost entirely New York City municipal workers, was sold to Ben August. August has no roots in journalism or media, having sold a lucrative human resource services company he built. And since then, devoting himself to his Napa Valley vineyard and a nonprofit group that investigates who really wrote the plays attributed to Shakespeare. But his passion for supporting the “worker” compelled him to enter our industry to steward The Chief, whose masthead proclaims it “A Voice for Workers,” bulleting: “Good Pay, Safety, Opportunity and Equity” as the publications' key missions to its readers. Now with a new editorial team, design and website, August said his mission is to expand this century-old brand (whose name stems from its 1897 founding as the independent newspaper for NYC firefighters) to be the voice of workers beyond the borders of New York City. In this 132nd episode of E&P Reports, Ben August, the new owner and publisher of The Chief, New York City's weekly newspaper for municipal workers, explains why he is spending less time on his Napa Vineyard and more time devoted to transforming a more than 100-year-old newspaper into a modernized voice for workers everywhere. Also on this episode is a well-known industry consultant and founder of Creative Circle Media Solutions, Bill Ostendorf, who explains the transformation process of the paper's print design and website and plans for its expansion over the months to come.

Vaccines in the wings but basic public health measures need to endure. Reporter Bob Hennelly speaks with News Director Doug Doyle DOYLE: This week the nation faced the worst week since the start of the coronavirus pandemic last winter. Here in New Jersey, the trend lines are also up significantly, but not to the catastrophic levels we saw in the first wave. For our essential workforce the risks of contracting the deadly virus remain a constant source of anxiety. With us now is WBGO's Bob Hennelly, who as a reporter with the Chief Leader, has been covering the challenges that essential workers have faced during pandemic. Thanks for joining us Bob. HENNELLY: Thanks for having me . DOYLE: So, we are ten months into this once in a century public health crisis. Before we get into some of the latest efforts to keep our first responders, healthcare personnel, and essential workers safe can, you give us a sense of the toll the pandemic has taken on this workforce so far? HENNELLY: This is

Unions warn layoffs would further delay ambulances arrival as WBGO News Director Doug Doyle talks with Reporter Bob Hennelly. DOYLE: As New York City continues to double down on its efforts to head off a second surge of the coronavirus, statistics just released show what a serious toll the initial wave of the virus had on the FDNY’s response times to life threatening medical emergencies. With us now is WBGO’s Bob Hennelly, who covers the New York City Fire Department for the Chief Leader to go over the numbers and discuss their implications. Thanks for joining us Bob. So, what’s the source for this information, and what are the top line data points that grabbed your eye? HENNELLY: Well Doug, this is all based on the Mayor’s Management Report which is put out annually and ranks the performance of all city agencies. And the data point I was most shocked by was the end to end response time for FDNY EMT ambulances. That is the time it takes from when a call first comes from a caller
WBGO News Director Doug Doyle speaks with WBGO Journal reporter Bob Hennelly DOYLE: It was 19 years ago this week that two airliners ploughed into the World Trade Center and forever altered our world. On that day, close to 3,000 people perished, including 343 firefighters who were killed when the WTC towers collapsed. In the years since, the death toll from that dark day has continued to climb and most likely has exceeded the number of deaths on the day of the attack as a consequence of the toxic air that persisted in lower Manhattan for months. With us now is WBGO's Bob Hennelly, who as a reporter with the Chief-Leader, has been tracking the long-term health consequences for first responders and the residents of lower Manhattan. Thanks for joining us Bob. First, because it was a long time ago, could you go back and describe the circumstances back in the fall of 2001 that led to so many thousands of people being exposed to air that would either kill them or make them chronically ill
Lack of local aid from Washington may prompt similar moves here in New Jersey and across the country. WBGO contributor Bob Hennelly speaks with News Director Doug Doyle about the ongoing economic fallout from the COVID pandemic. DOYLE: Across the country, the COVID19 public health crisis has also sparked a rapid economic downturn which has generated levels of joblessness that rival the Great Depression. Historically, public employees have been insulated somewhat from the business cycles but the current slowdown is an exception. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is now preparing to lay off thousands of civil servants by Oct. 1. With us now is WBGO contributor Bob Hennelly, who also covers City Hall for the Chief-Leader. Thanks for joining us Bob. So, first gives us the economic context for this crisis. Traditionally wasn't one of the benefits of a civil service position job security? HENNELLY: Absolutely Doug, historically that’s how it worked. But what is going on now is we have this

There’s no doubt that George Floyd’s brutal death in police custody last month has ignited a mass protest movement on a scale not seen since the 1960s. But it remains to be seen just what kind of change will come to pass. WBGO contributor Bob Hennelly, who is also a reporter with the City Hall reporter for the Chief Leader, has been covering the issue of race and policing for the last 30 years. Hennelly spoke with WBGO News Director Doug Doyle. DOYLE: In the Floyd case the officers were fired, arrested and charged. HENNELLY: That is unusual. Police officers in the United States have tremendous legal advantages and protections under the law. They have of course sovereign immunity which goes back to the concept in common law which goes back to the concept of the king can do no harm. It’s hard to prosecute the government. Then there is qualified immunity which is the legal concept that police can’t be held legally liable for violating someone’s civil rights and if that is not enough
As states across the nation open up their economies, we are just beginning to get a sense of the toll on the families of essential workers, like nurses and firefighters, who either died in the pandemic or maybe permanently disabled from their bout with COVID19. It should come as no surprise that the members of Congress from our region that led the charge for the passage of the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund are teaming up to introduce the Pandemic Heroes Compensation Act. WBGO News Director Doug Doyle chats with WBGO contributor Bob Hennelly who is also a reporter with the Chief Leader, where he covers City Hall, transportation and emergency services. DOYLE: Thanks for joining us Bob. So, this would be a national program and who would it cover? HENNELLY: It would indeed. We are talking about health care workers, first responders, postal workers, grocery workers, pretty much anyone who had to leave their home to go to work while their state was under an emergency stay at home order.
Here in our region, with the rate of COVID19 hospitalizations on the decline, officials have started the process of determining just how to restart the economy. But the pandemic has taken a terrible toll on first responders and their families. Mayor Bill de Blasio recently briefed reporters on one way the city was trying to help these families cope. "260 city employees have lost their lives, and this includes Police Officers, Correction Officers, Teachers, EMTS, Doctors and Nurses, people who have given so much and gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting this disease. Now, their families in some cases are facing the loss of health insurance and we want to make sure there is immediate support for those families." DOYLE: With us now is WBGO contributor Bob Hennelly, who is also a reporter for the The Chief-Leader where he covers City Hall, transportation and emergency services. Thanks for joining us Bob. So, Bob is there any precedent for something like this in terms of the impact on front
