Summary Shonda Johnson, founder of the Rick Miller Foundation, shares her journey of creating a foundation to alleviate hunger and support those in need. Growing up in a generous household, Shonda was inspired by her father's commitment to helping others. After witnessing the need for food among college students, Shonda started the foundation to ensure that no one's quality of life is compromised by the quality of food they can afford. She balances her full-time job as a crime victim advocate with her work at the foundation, driven by her passion to make a difference. Shonda's future goals include expanding the foundation's reach and establishing a 24-hour warehouse to provide food and resources to those in need. Takeaways Generosity and compassion can be instilled from a young age, shaping a person's desire to help others. Hunger should not limit or compromise a person's quality of life. Balancing a full-time job with a passion for helping others requires dedication and support. Providing resources and support to those in need can have a profound impact on their lives. We begin this week with no funny fanfare or comedic cuteness because this week's special guest deserves nothing but our utmost respect and your undivided attention, as the Best Friend of the Pod and OG Sponsor Rick Miller returns once again to share his wisdom and knowledge with our boys Sid and Keith and with all you lucky listeners. Rick is bringing the fire this week, as he discusses with our boys how to be able to cultivate a culture that both allows for profits to propagate while still enabling an enduring environment for ethics to excel. And when push comes to shove and you have to choose between the moral good and the monetary good, Rick will help us stay on the sunny side of the moral good, because what does it profit a man if he gains the world but loses his soul and his morals? Yes, this week's Overlap Podcast is going to be one you won't want to miss, so come on and hear Mr. Miller's magnificent message - brought to you by … well, him. And, Rick, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your early and constant support. The writing staff here at Overlap salutes you, sir.

This episode is a re-release of our previous episode E051. On Friday, June 30, 2023, our beloved friend Dr. Rick Miller passed away. Rick had been ill for a couple of years and it appeared he was making a comeback; it was delightful for many of us to see him at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association meeting in Albuquerque, NM in April 2023. Rick was a leader among leaders. He served as chair of the psychology departments at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He served as President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association – and these leadership examples merely scratch the surface of his contributions. He was a prolific researcher and an award-winning teacher on a national level on multiple occasions. We will dearly miss Rick. Our condolences go out to Jeanne and to everyone in Rick's family – and that includes his colleagues and his teaching of psychology friends worldwide. Please enjoy this interview from PsychSessions with Rick at his best, originally recorded October 2018 and released January 2019.
In the early 1980s, Rick Miller formed the first lineup of Southern Culture on the Skids. Rick had grown up dividing time between his father's home in North Carolina and his mother's home in California. Mary Huff, from Roanoke, Virginia was a cello major who also played bass guitar. Upon hearing that Rick's band was looking for a replacement bass player, Mary joined and also recruited her long time friend Dave Hartman on drums. The trio of Rick, Mary and Dave would go on to become a much-loved, very fun and extremely talented band who have recorded and toured for several decades now. I've seen them play shows over the years, most recently at The Duck Room in St. Louis. And I had the pleasure of talking with Mary and Rick who called in from their rehearsal space and studio, The Kudzu Ranch.Photo by Ron Keith.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. In this episode special guest host Jane Halonen joins Garth and Eric to interview Chris Cardone from MacMillan Publishers. Chris announces on the podcast that she is retiring, and while we celebrate with her, it is also bittersweet. In true Chris style, the show notes presented below for this episode were written by Chris: "Chris would like to thank ALL of her authors and Teaching of Psych instructors who supported her work over so many years. Without them and their kindness, I could not have succeeded in my work or learned so much about psychology. Although I couldn't mention them all in the interview, and I will surely miss naming some here, I would like to especially thank the following authors and psychologists who have granted me so much of their time and consideration over the years, Dana Dunn, Elliot Aronson, Regan Gurung, Diane Halpern, Dave Myers, Barney Beins, Ken Keith, Rick Miller, and Janet Belsky. I want to also thank my wonderful colleagues and team at Macmillan/Worth for all their support and friendship, especially Carlise Stembridge, Dan DeBonis, Andrea Page, Chuck Linsmeier, Shani Fisher, and Kate Nurre. Many thanks to Jane Halonen, Garth Neufeld, and Eric Landrum for letting me share some of my stories working in this wonderful field of psychology."
Rube Burrow was born into a simple life and was considered a good kid. But he idolized the outlaw Jesse James. While this shouldn't have been a big deal, it had a much bigger impact than anyone would have expected. When he got older, he moved out to Texas and soon began a criminal career that some argue is unmatched in Old West history. Pastors' Point of View Ep 231 with Dr. Andy Woods & Rick Miller"Faith & Public Policy"On the eve of a historic midterm election in the USA, Dr. Andy Woods and guest, the Hon. Rick Miller (former member of the Texas House), discuss the importance of Christians being involved in voting and public policy. Here, we discuss why such a responsibility flows from believers needing to be good stewards of our free republic and also functioning as biblical salt and light. Also, we discuss today's unfortunate fragmented evangelical mind that separates the secular from the sacred. We also talk about the personal sacrifice that was needed to get our country off the ground and how such self-sacrifice will also be needed to turn our country around. Thanks for listening.

This week's episode of The Overlap is gonna have a little Old Home Week flair to the festivities, as Friend of the Show Rick Miller returns with his business coaching acumen and skill to help us all learn to master our margins Now, Rick isn't just a Friend of the Show – he's also the very first sponsor of our program and he's been a business coach to Sid for years and is currently coaching Keith (God be with him in that endeavor). Now, back to how to make margin … first, you melt the solid vegetable oil and place it over a bowl of ice, whisking the oil over the ice until the mixture starts to thicken. Then, take your milk and … apologies for the technical difficulties; that was how to make margarine. Margin is the space we don't know we need until we don't have it. Imagine if you will, a book with every single page completely filled with words, with no space at all between anything. You wouldn't be able to decipher a bit of it and it would lead to chaos, would it not? Well, if it's chaos there, then it stands to reason that same margin principle needs to apply to our own lives as well, as many of us are out there living in insane spaceless pages, going hour by hour and day by day filling ourselves up but not leaving that necessary space to breathe, reflect and process all that has gone on with us. The Miller Margin Method (patent pending) also applies to how you structure your work day and work flow for your business. You can put in the 12-hour day that is culturally expected for small businesses and startups, but are all 12 of those hours truly effective? How many of those hours are actually effective for making progress in your business rather than dealing with the tyranny of the emergent and the urgent? Coach Miller will lead us to victory this week in the Margin Bowl, so strap on your pads, throw on your jersey and let's play ball with this week's Overlap Podcast. Sid Sexton and Keith Glines, our host, have a conversation with Rick Miller. Rick Miller is from Mobile, Alabama and attended college at Alabama to get a degree in accounting. After college moved to New York City to work for a large accounting firm. During Rick's time in New York a friend encouraged Rick to apply to Harvard Business School then Rick got accepted. After graduating Harvard Rick moves out west gets married to his wife. As Rick and his wife started their family they decided to move back to Alabama. After getting settled in Fairhope, Alabama Rick began to consult small business. Consulting businesses morphed into being a business coach. Why Rick decide to be a business coach because even the most successful people in their field have a coach. Tom Brady has a coach, Serena Williams has a coach, most successful business leaders have a coach. Therefore, Rick wanted to help leaders be the best they can be by being their coach. Rick answers the question that most of us have when we hear of business coaches—why do I need one? Accountability. A coach is someone who will show up on a consistent basis and they know they will be held accountable for the results. Accessibility A coach gives you a broader perspective. A coach is outside the business but is knowledgable enough about your organization they can give specific input that fits your situation. Analysis We all have blindspots and a coach can help you identify those and help you through those blindspots. “Balance is more important than speed." Rick shares his philosophy of living a life of the Overlap (a balanced life). Where not only one area of your life is succeeding but all areas of your life can succeed and it begins with four boxes. The boxes are: Work, Family, Community, Spiritual. When you put effort into all four boxes you live a balanced life. A life that is what this podcast desires you to live. You will never consistently stay balance but if you have this framework you will do better than you ever could without living with this framework. That is just the beginning of this episode that is jam packed with wisdom that will improve your life as a whole. This episode really shows that we are not just a podcast to improve your business but a podcast to improve your life. The 2017 Tax Act included provisions that could impose a 21% excise tax for certain nonprofit institutions, including credit unions. Credit unions could be subject to the tax if they pay more than $1 million in income to an executive in one calendar year. While many executives may not meet that threshold in salary alone, the law also factors in executive benefits such as 457(f) distributions, which could pose significant tax implications for credit unions. Doug welcomes attorney Rick Miller to the show to discuss this and other situations in which the tax would be payable and offers strategies to help credit unions avoid or mitigate the tax impact.
