On the latest episode of The Dropcast, hosts Noah Thomas and Jian DeLeon break down the best of Paris Fashion Week. We're joined by journalist, entrepreneur, and speaker Noor Tagouri. She was recently featured in an editorial in Vogue magazine, but unfortunately the Libyan-American activist and media figure was misidentified as Pakistani actor and model Noor Bukhari. We talk about this experience and place it in the context of a larger conversation about inclusivity and diversity in fashion, media, and beyond. Things get really real as we share our own stories about microaggressions and power structures in the workplace that can be hard for people of color to identify and overcome. The conversation shifts towards why it's important for people from marginalized communities to rise to positions of power, especially in creative industries. Of course, no Dropcast would really be complete without straight-up jawns talk, of which there's plenty. Noor also weighs in on some of the couture collections just shown in Paris, and we talk about why it's important to support independent designers—especially ones of color. Listener voicemails also share their thoughts on whether or not fashion has become more inclusive than ever. If you liked this episode, and to give feedback on future episodes—or even just share your own struggles with inclusivity at work—call the Dropcast Hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766). It’s hard to believe that a $1.49 bag made entirely of polypropylene could be so influential. So much so that in 2017 Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga, introduced a $2,145 version in leather that set the internet ablaze. Writer and host Sachin Bhola investigates IKEA's Frakta bag. He speaks to a handful of sources to examine the bag’s origins, its appropriation by the fashion world, the resurgence of everyday totes, and its continued popularity to get to the heart of how the IKEA bag mysteriously became one of the most relevant products of our time. First is a conversation with Iina Vuorivirta, an in-house designer at IKEA, who recounts the bag's beginnings. Next, Jackie Skye Kim, the former associate fashion director of Barneys New York, speaks to the moment function gave way to form through the lens of Balenciaga's Gvasalia. Then, Michael Cherman of Chinatown Market talks about the Frakta-inspired cap he produced in collaboration with Pleasures and discusses the bag's modern-day reimagining, including Virgil Abloh's take on it. hubris meaning: 1. a way of talking or behaving that is too proud: 2. an extreme and unreasonable feeling of pride and confidence in yourself. As a true poet, Huey Briss manages to captivate audiences through his smooth raps. From getting play on major radio stations to modeling for brands like Undefeated, Chinatown Market, and Real Bad Man it is very clear indeed that Briss does not miss. We sat down talked about what Briss likes outside of music, and what his plans are for the future.
Mike Cherman is the founder of ICNY and Chinatown Market. Despite his myriad contributions to streetwear, Mike’s working hand was largely invisible. Much of his work is instantly recognizable, though: he designed all of KITH’s branding from the box logo to the Just Us branding, for Ronnie Fieg. Much of the early A$AP Worldwide gear was Mike’s work, too. "People say your brand dies when you go to Urban," Mike Cherman says, "Enjoy making no money for the rest of your life. I've been in Urban since the first collection. So if that means I'm dead, I've been dead since day one." As always, thank you for tuning into HYPEBEAST Radio and Business of HYPE. Please don't forget to rate, comment and subscribe to our other shows MIC/LINE, The Anthropology, The HYPE Report and HYPETALKS. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/businessofhype/support
In episode 4 I️ did something completely different—I️ took Army of Unicorns live to the floor of Complexcon, the streetwear mecca. It was pretty amazing to see the phenomenon happening in real time and talk to some important people in culture who are each breaking tradition and live Happy, Hungry, and Curious. In this Episode, I️ interview Futura—the old school graffiti artist, Mike from Chinatown Market—an LA clothing line, Leah McSweeney from Married to the Mob, recording artist ASAP Ferg, Sean Wotherspoon from Round Two in LA, and Remington and Heather from Advisory Board Crystals. Enjoy and keep an eye out for part two coming soon.
In this episode we talk to Mike Cherman, founder of streetwear brand Chinatown Market. Mike talks about his previous brands, his successes, failures and lessons learned along the way. Based in Los Angeles, Chinatown Market is known for their graphic printed T’s, bootlegged logos and most recently, their IKEA dad cap. Hypebeast once said ‘No trend is safe from Mike Cherman’, testament to his speed to pick up on what’s relevant in youth culture.
