Weeks ago, we told you to keep an eye glued to the Macabre Valley #1 Kickstarter from writer Zack Quaintance and artist Anna Readman. Now, you have only one week left to back the project and secure yourself a copy of this fiendishly fun comic. Based on Quaintance's own experiences reporting along the American/Mexican border, Macabre Valley tells a viciously recognizable story, energized by Anna Readman's gnarly creature designs and trippy sequential storytelling. You can even support the project knowing you'll receive your comic soon, as Macabre Valley has surpassed its funding goal spectacularly. To celebrate and encourage last-minute stragglers, we're thrilled to have Zack Quaintance back on the podcast this week to discuss the werewolf priest at Macabre Valley's center, and he's even joined this time by his talented collaborator Anna Readman (making her podcast debut, no less). We discuss what makes the best werewolves and how both creators relate to the real-life horror that surrounds the fantastical horror throughout Macabre Valley. The conversation considers uniforms, from the lawful to the hirsute, and the influence they have on those who wear them. Finally, it leaves the listener imagining a wild, wonderful alternate reality where Cormac McCarthy wrote for EC Comics. Again, Macabre Valley #1 is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter. It's written by Zack Quaintance, illustrated by Anna Readman, colored by Brad Simpson, and lettered by Becca Carey. Please follow Zack Quaintance on Blue Skyand Instagram, and follow Anna Readman on her Website and Instagram. When Francis Ford Coppola shoots you an email asking you to transform his new movie into a comic book, you say yes and worry about the details later. Chris Ryall got the email. Once he got over the shock ot it, he immediately knew who to contact next: Comic Book Couples Counseling regular, Jacob Phillips. They couldn't have possibly understood what an undertaking they were committing to during those early days, but nearly five years later, they have the Megalopolisgraphic novel in their hands. It's something special. As you'll hear on this week's podcast, Francis Ford Coppola wanted Ryall and Phillips to make the comic their own. If that meant chopping up the script or fabricating the designs, so be it. Jacob Phillips approaches the likenesses the way he would any corporate comic character. If he were on Batman, he'd do his version of Batman. So, he'd apply the same logic to Adam Driver. The actor is the design, but the pencils and inks belong to Phillips. The magic is in how the movie and the comic, crafted independently of each other, aligned so well together. Chatting with Ryall and Phillips allowed us to celebrate both artistic mediums. We discuss the challenges of translating cinematic ideas onto panels, the need for repertoire stories, and the hope within Francis Ford Coppola's humanism. Before all that, however, we also discuss the new documentary, Shopping for Superman. Directed by Wes Eastin, the film travels across America, from one comic book shop to another. It's a must-watch for every comic book reader, as it honors the industry while contemplating where it's all going in the wake of Diamond Comic Distributors' destruction. Megalopolis, the comic, is published by Abrams ComicArts and arrives in shops on October 7th. Make sure you're following Chris Ryall on his Substack, Instagram, and Blue Sky. Also, follow Jacob Phillips on Instagram and Blue Sky. We started ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics in February 2020. The first episode of our podcast was published in March 2020 as the world prepared to go into lockdown and it's been a whirlwind ever since. We've been publishing monthly roundups of news, resources, webinars and new titles published since March 2020. We created our podcast feed and published our first creator chats in May 2020. All this takes an enormous amount of time to compile but we feel it's important to share everything we have gathered, not just among the ALIA Graphic Committee but with everyone and anyone interested. We have also made a special effort to interview as many Australian comics creators as possible. Our creator chats focus on Australian creators discussing what they love about comics, how they fell in love with the medium and, of course, their comics and graphic novels. A lot of them are on our YouTube channel and all of them are on our podcast feed (because some of them are camera shy and that's totally fair). We never could've imagined it but we are this is the 100th episode of our podcast. To celebrate this we have received some messages. We want to thank the ALIA National team for their support and we're glad to receive a message from ALIA Deputy CEO Trish Hepworth. Then, we hear from four awesome Australian creators who have been kind enough to put their pencils down and send us a message. We hear from:Sarah Winifred Searle, who tells us about what she loves about libraries and how libraries have helped her as a library creatorReimena Yee tells us about what she loves about comics as a story telling medium and how things are changing in the Australian comics sceneMat Groom talks about what he loves about the Australian comics community and his love of librariesJames Foley answered lots of questions and he has a lot to say about making, the Australian comics community and more.A huge thank you to all four of them for putting their pencils down for a few minutes and sending us a message. A special thanks to Chris Gooch who sent us the art for this episode. And a heartfelt thank you from everyone in the ALIA Graphic Committee to all creators and guests in the first 100 episodes. We love your work and we thank you for every email with feedback, the creator chats and your support. For more from us, check out our website and socials. In this creator chat we talk to Chris Gooch who's recently published his third graphic novel with Top Shelf: In Utero. A young adult monster story with some horror thrown in for good measure. We talk about Chris' comics making process, which he often shares on social media too. His advice for young creators starting to make comics. The origins of In Utero and the influences in In Utero, from Otomo's Domu to the first couple of episodes of Digimon. Under-Earth is a graphic novel from TopShelf Productions written and illustrated by the Melbourne Australian native Chris Gooch. Under-Earth takes place in an underground subterranean prison city that is a sinkhole for nostalgic items such as iPod, N64s, collector item toys, and even old city structures themselves. The story follows a struggling new prisoner Reece Dixon and fellow prisoner Malcolm as their friendship goes through radical change. The story also follows two gritty good hearted thieves Ele and Zoe as they steal items for a power hungry prison kingpin who claims he has map access to ways out of the prison. These two stories stand alone, but also intertwine through tone and perfect pace and timing. Chris Gooch joins Nerd Escape for an informative interview about his influences and interest in writing and illustration, the reflection of Australia as a back setting in Under-Earth, and on what are his favorite things about Under-Earth. This is an amazing read that you do not want to miss out on, for this graphic novel has wonderful colors, tones, layers, and epic story telling. Music credit to: Jeremy Blake - Power Up! In a future world, criminals are thrown into a makeshift prison deep underground and the only way to live is to search a giant landfill for items of value. That's the setup for the new graphic novel, Under-Earth, by the Australian cartoonist Chris Gooch. In between the fast-paced action, Chris explores what it means to live an ethical life in an unethical world.
This month we're very honoured to have a chat with not one but three amazing Australian creators. September starts out strong for Creator Talks with another bonus podcast for the Labor Day Holiday. Award-winning Australian writer/artist Chris Gooch joins me to discuss the making of his graphic novel Under-Earth through Top Shelf/IDW on sale October 2020. This is the second of two graphic novels Certified Cool by Diamond Previews I teased on previous shows. Diamond Preview's description of Under-Earth reads: "The inmates of an expansive underground prison struggle to build meaningful lives in a broken system, in the most ambitious graphic novel to date from rising indie star Chris Gooch...Equal parts sincerity an violence, Under-Earth explores humanity's inextinguishable drive to find meaning, connection, and even family-and how fragile such constructions can be" Chris' other notable and award-winning work includes Bottled and Deep Breaths. I discuss these works with Chris as well, and how he works on multiple projects in different stages of development, simultaneously, to keep his work fresh as he grinds through the finishing details. We also talk about whom Chris considers his mentors, learning to work digitally and the movie that changed the way he thinks. The Flying Fruit Fly Circus has been an integral part of the Albury Wodonga community teaching generations of kids circus. This event will celebrate that history and bring successive generations of graduates and volunteers together. Finally Richard talks to Carolyn Fraser who is the Lead Curator of the State Library of Victoria's new gallery space and the exhibition Velvet, Iron and Ashes. The exhibition is about local history and the title refers to three artefacts - Ned Kelly's armour, the famous cricket ashes, and a dress created for the pagent of nations event held at Melbourne's centenary. Carolyn draws fascinating links between these objects and others in the exhibition.
