Hello to you listening in Greeley, Colorado! Coming to you from Whidbey Island Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. I believe that our November to May Rain Festival is nearly over. Here in the Pacific Northwest we welcome clear skies, sunshine, warm weather, less winter burden, and maybe even dropping our shoulders from the habitual “fight or flight” response to the world that continues spinning on an axis of uncertain madness. Habit. It's like that story about a team of pack animals struggling their way up a mountainside. The last pony in line was wearing a saddle but the horse just ahead of him was burdened with boxes and bags and baskets. The pony said: Good grief, what a heavy load you're carrying! The horse turned it's head and asked: What load? Like that horse we get used to carrying so much we don't even realize it. Practical Tip: Right now, in this moment stop, take a few deeps breaths, gently ease your shoulders away from your ears and smile to them; thank them for what they've been carrying for you and tell them that in the future you will take care to burden them less. Then wait for a moment while they smile back at you. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Your body is always looking out for you, whether it's fighting off germs or keeping your heart pumping. But sometimes it can take things a little too far - like translating negative thoughts into anxiety or fear. With the help of positive affirmations and physical exercises, we can take the necessary steps to make ourselves feel better.
Five deep breaths. It takes longer than you think, we'll likely get through this entire introduction till you're done. But those five deep breaths are a great start at combating one giant source of an unhealthy heart - stress. On today's Block Club Chicago Podcast, sponsored by Rush, Dr. Rupa Sanghani, on how unplugging for a moment, time away from the stressful chicago news cycle, might just save your heart. Host - Jon Hansen Guest - Rupa Sanghani, MD Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
What if mental clarity, emotional regulation, and better sleep weren't about adding another practice—but undoing a hidden one?In this conversation, Patrick McKeown reveals how chronic over-breathing quietly drives anxiety, rumination, poor sleep, and brain fog. Drawing from decades of research and lived experience, he explains why breathing less (not more) can improve oxygen delivery, blood flow to the brain, and nervous system balance. This episode challenges modern breathwork myths and offers practical, science-backed ways to retrain your breathing for everyday life.Show Partners:Get your MENTAL FITNESS BLUEPRINT here! Happy Thursday, you pop culture junkies. This week, Brooke debated even doing the podcast due to her trepidation in how to handle the assassination of Charlie Kirk in terms of what was unfolding online. But she decided to go forward and give her take on the state of things while also looking at SOME of the social media response. To counter the heavy, there is light. From the Snack Time Bedtime lady on TikTok to a new trend popping up where creators are actually creating their own shows, Brooke break it all down. Happy New Year! No, I'm not late this time, as this year's goal I've decided not to miss a single mix deadline. 2024 was a bit chaotic for me personally and professionally but things are over now. This year I'm going to dedicate a lot more time to making music and mixes. In fact, I already have another mix prepared for this month to start the year with new music. In this mix I have added the songs that have resonated with you and me the most. Remember that for this mix there is no monthly playlist, it comes from ‘Best of Bamf Radio', you order it by date and listen to the songs I've added in 2024.That's all from me. Can gratitude actually change the way you approach fitness? Imagine shifting your mindset from focusing on what your body can't do to appreciating what it can do. That simple shift can unlock a whole new level of motivation and consistency in your workouts. Gratitude isn't just about saying thank you—it's about grounding yourself in the present and celebrating small wins. Start by taking a few mindful breaths before your workout to center your thoughts on what you're grateful for: your body's strength, the time you've carved out for yourself, or even the progress you've made, no matter how small. Reflect on your achievements at the end of the day, focusing on what went well instead of what didn't. This abundant mindset allows you to see fitness not as a chore but as an opportunity to honor your body. By celebrating progress, not perfection, you cultivate authenticity and self-worth—two key drivers of personal growth. Remember, working on yourself isn't selfish; it's a gift to you and everyone around you. PAUSE… Find the rhythm of your breathing. The slow rise of your belly and chest and you breathe in. And the contraction of your body as you breathe out. PAUSE… Be here, With your breath. Riding its gentle waves in and out of your body. Over and over again, Settling into its cycle. LONG PAUSE… Now take a big, deep breath in, Imagining the air clearing out what's inside. Hold it for just a moment. And then breathe out, Releasing the air, and everything not needed inside. PAUSE… Breathe in deep again, This time letting the air stretch your spine straight, From the bottom of your tailbone, All the way up to the crown of your head. And then let the air go, Exhaling and softening your body into comfort. PAUSE… Relax your breathing, And let it find a nice, easy rhythm. PAUSE… Notice the natural slowing down of your breathing, And clearing of your mind, As you focus your attention on the air coming in, And the air going out. Breathing in, Breathing out. PAUSE… Let the thoughts pass, As you come back to your breath. LONG PAUSE… Now take another full, deep breath in, Gathering up any thoughts, Worries, Or plans, And holding your breath for just a moment at the top. Hold it. And then let it go, Releasing all the air, All the worries, All the thoughts, All the plans, Into the space around you, Watching them dissolve and disappear. PAUSE… Now hold yourself up straight as you breathe in one last big breath, Expanding your spine and releasing the tension within, Imagining all that air rising to the top of your head, And then exhale, Releasing your breath, Calming your mind, And relaxing your body. PAUSE… Let yourself settle once again into the steady, easy flow of your breathing. And just be here for a bit. PAUSE… Feeling light. Clear. Fresh. LONG PAUSE… Namaste, Beautiful
