Ep. 155 (Part 1 of 3) | Integral polymath Sean Esbjörn-Hargens is the first comparative scholar to undertake differentiating the myriad varieties of nonduality. A longtime spiritual practitioner within several nondual traditions, Sean wanted to find out how we can understand the relationship between reality, consciousness, and practice. He decided to delve into a comprehensive study of nonduality and was surprised and excited by what he found: 40 distinct nondual traditions, ancient and new, from East and West, fascinating in their differences, their similarities, their uniqueness, and their depth. Sean's hope is that his comparative analysis of nondual traditions will open the door to a global, cross-tradition dialogue that will supersede centuries of misunderstanding and conflict among people arguing that their realization is the best and/or only correct interpretation of reality and allow nondual traditions to enrich and empower one another.Enthusiasm and excitement flow throughout the conversation as Sean reveals provocative patterns he has uncovered in nonduality's history and the distinctions he has mapped so far. It becomes clear that nondual realizations evolve in a way similar to developmental models in terms of subject/object relationship, psychology of self, and taking new perspectives, and that they will continue to evolve. As Sean puts it, “the ontological floor keeps dropping out as the endpoint of spiritual realization.” “What will our nondual traditions look like in a thousand years? In two thousand years!” Sean wonders. Hang on to your hats for a thoroughly enjoyable and eye opening ride through a goldmine of information about the many faces and potentials of our nondual traditions. Recorded September 12, 2024.“How do we understand the relationship between consciousness, reality, and practice?”(For Apple Podcast users, click here to view the complete show notes on the episode page.)Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing Sean Esbjörn-Hargens, author, Dean of Integral Education & Integral Noetic Sciences Program Director at CIHS, founder of MetaIntegral (00:59)How was Sean drawn to exploring the topic of nonduality? (05:03)There are over 40 distinct nondual traditions on the planet (07:31)When you say nonduality, what do you mean? (11:02)Advaita Vedanta's “not two”; there's only Self, only divine awareness (11:43)3 major nondual ultimacies: nondual oneness, nondual tantra, nondual union (12:49)In nondual traditions, does divinizing the self lead to the same experience as annihilating the self? (17:43)The I-sphere of nonduality, the we-sphere of nonduality, and the it-sphere of nonduality (19:51)Ken Wilber's notion of emptiness + view: emptiness doesn't change but view does, so nonduality evolves (22:00)Varieties of nonduality emphasize different qualities: emptiness + omnipresence, emptiness + bliss, emptiness + luminosity, emptiness + embodiment (23:33)Nonduality is developmental in terms of states: each realization is a deeper, wider experience of nonduality (25:45)Realization is just going to keep going; there is a way in which all views are equal and a way in which some views are better than others (29:41)Resources & References – Part 1

It is a wonderful warm day. Welcome to you. How are you doing? I'm Kristina: doing great. Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. Stephen: Great. Now, before we get started talking about your book, let's find out a little bit about you. So tell us some things where you live and some things you like to do besides writing. Kristina: Yeah, that's a great question. I live at the Jersey shore, which a lot of people are familiar with from the show, which isn't where I live, but I still live at the Jersey shore. I live by the beach. It's absolutely beautiful here. I love it. I was born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, where Frank Sinatra from, if anybody knows who he is I might have heard of him. I have heard of him, right? Yeah. Many young folks, maybe not have to look 'em up or ask their grandparents. But aging myself, but yes. So New Jersey is my home. A lot of my fiction stories revolve around the Jersey shore. I love it here. And my favorite thing to do besides and read and spend time with my family is to go to the beach. I love to be by the water, whether I'm at the beach or at a river or a lake or anywhere with water, I. Brings me peace and calmness. And I just love to, to do that. So nice. That's great. My favorite thing to do the coast. Stephen: So do they actually film the show there? Yes. Kristina: Okay. They do and it's different parts. There are different counties that have the ocean. The east coast is a big, is big in New Jersey and there's a lot of people here. And so yes, they do. They filmed it in several of the towns and they're all wonderful towns and I've been to all of them and a no issue. But where I live is a little more suburbia, a little more local, a little quieter, which suits me and my personality. But a lot of people love. The high life down there with all the partying and the things that go on and that's brings a summer crowd for sure, which we love that living here, we have a lot of people that are tourists that come in from New York or Pennsylvania or other states to visit. And that's really great for our economy and just for the hustle and bustle of New Jersey. It's wonderful. But where I live is a little quieter. It's a little more of a local area. Stephen: Nice. Okay. So why did you want to start writing and what made you finally actually sit down to. Kristina: That's a great question. I've been writing all of my life in some capacity and fiction has always been a passion of mine. I love stories. I love reading stories and telling stories. And as a young child, as many children begin with their love of reading and writing. When you know, many people, I should say, adults begin with their love of reading and writing when they're young. I would write short stories. I would write these little stories and they actually were on the darker side, which is what I ended up writing in fiction were th...

Episode 52: Dr. Gaetan Chevalier - Get Grounded When was the last time your bare skin touched the earth? Have you heard of the terms "earthing" or "grounding"? Did you know, that when a human being is disconnected from the earth, it causes an electro-chemical disturbance and pH imbalance in the body, resulting in a state of dis-ease? How could something so simplistic, like putting our feet on the ground, have such profound beneficial effects? Could grounding help with arthritis, back pain, "chronic inflammation" and "auto-immune disease"? According do Dr. Chevalier, grounding is as essential as vitamins and minerals and refers to grounding as "vitamin G". On Episode 40 I am welcoming back Elizabeth Krasnoff (she is on my Episode 2 of Shattered Conception) I thought it would be helpful to many listeners to hear Elizabeth and I discuss how incorporating sound, sound frequencies and music can soothe our bodies, our minds, our spirits/souls, and our emotions during these unprecedented times of COVID interrupting our daily lives and daily routines. This is such an important topic for myriad reasons - however especially for those with a trauma history, or people who have overactive nervous systems, and for those of us who are highly sensitive individuals - humans in general do not like uncertainty - the human mind needs order and a sense of safety in our daily life. Elizabeth connects how FEAR releases hormones and neurotransmitters that significantly impact brain waves! Elizabeth’s main passions of music, healing and consciousness complemented and co-mingled in 2016 with the start of her private practice Sound Medicine. She has trained and immersed herself in the Biosound Healing™ methodology, a configuration of a vibrating sound bed, meditation, music, video and Heartmath®, and combines this with the other skill sets in her practice to help clients deal with stress using sound and biofeedback. In 2018, Elizabeth was published in the World Futures Journal and twice in the Society for Consciousness Studies newsletter. She presents on sound and consciousness at venues such as the Yale Divinity School with Deepak Chopra, The Graduate Institute, CIIS, CIHS, the Academy of Intuition, the Globe Sound Healing Conference and lastly JFK University, where she now teaches the annual Sound Healing class in the Expressive Arts Program.
