Kendra Dahlstrom: Why High Achievers Get Triggered at Work and How Great Leaders Regulate

What if brilliant leaders stumble not from lack of skill but from hidden, childhood‑wired patterns and chronic stress? In this episode, Dean Newlund interviews Kendra Dahlstrom to reveal how cultivating self‑awareness and emotional regulation can restore presence, decision quality, and leadership freedom.   In this episode, Dean Newlund and Kendra Dahlstrom discuss: Why high-achieving leaders sometimes react in ways they later regret The concept of the “window of tolerance” and how stress impacts behavior How digital habits and modern work environments increase reactivity The influence of childhood experiences on leadership patterns and coping mechanisms Practical approaches to building self-awareness and improving emotional regulation   Key Takeaways: Emotional intelligence, especially self-awareness and self-regulation, is essential for sound decision-making and leadership under pressure. Chronic stress and constant digital stimulation push leaders outside their window of tolerance, increasing reactivity. Early life experiences often shape coping patterns like workaholism or overcontrol that show up in leadership behavior. Evaluating the real costs of behaviors helps leaders distinguish productive habits from harmful ones. Improving emotional regulation strengthens presence, clarity, and overall leadership effectiveness.   "Errors are expensive, and the higher you are up in the hierarchy, the more expensive an error will be.” — Kendra Dahlstrom   About Kendra Dahlstrom: Kendra is an executive coach and senior advisor to high-achieving leaders operating in complex, high-stakes environments. She specializes in emotional intelligence, intuition-informed decision making, executive presence, and leadership under pressure. Her work helps CEOs, founders, and senior executives resolve internal misalignment, regulate nervous system responses, and lead with clarity, authority, and integrity. Drawing on decades of experience advising Fortune 50 companies and global leaders, Kendra integrates psychological insight, strategic rigor, and embodied leadership to support sustainable performance and authentic influence.   Connect with Kendra Dahlstrom:   Website: https://kendradahlstrom.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kendradahlstrom Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kendra.dahlstrom The High Achieving Leader™ Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/4yXxXkHjoY35KaSKykVSsW       See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. This week, Caite and Arlene interview Neil Dahlstrom from the Quad Cities, an archivist at John Deere who manages historical records, collections, antique equipment, and corporate art; he says he cannot collect John Deere items personally due to ethics rules. Dahlstrom, who lacks a farming background, describes his path into archives and his interest in research and historical mysteries, while also “growing” his nearly 16-year-old son and new writing projects. He discusses his books: a Civil War press-freedom story (“Lincoln's Wrath”), a biography of John and Charles Deere (“The John Deere Story”), and “Tractor Wars” (1908–1928) on tractor origins and the roles of Ford, International Harvester, and Deere, including forgotten brands, fraud prompting standards like the Nebraska Test Lab, long adoption curves, and implement changes. He explains how “Tractor Wars” became an Iowa PBS documentary, and reflects on why history matters. Don't miss it!We're glad you're joining us for another episode of Barnyard Language. What if the leadership issue in front of you is not strategy, but an old wound you have never fully resolved?   In this episode, Bill Sherman talks with Kendra Dahlstrom an executive coach and host of "The Unworthy Leader" podcast about the deeply personal path that led her into thought leadership, and why she believes the future of leadership development must go far beyond traditional coaching. Kendra shares how her own experience as a coaching client changed the way she worked, lived, and led. What started as personal growth became something bigger. Senior leaders began turning to her for guidance in high-pressure moments. That trust revealed a new role: trusted advisor, coach, and thought leader. The conversation explores the real shift from being an internal leader to building an independent coaching practice. Kendra is candid about the hard part. Selling coaching is personal. When you are the product, rejection can feel personal too. She explains how learning to value her work, define her frameworks, and sell without losing generosity became essential to building a sustainable business. Bill and Kendra also dig into what makes coaching credible and scalable. Kendra explains why leaders want a bespoke experience, but still need a repeatable process they can trust. She discusses the balance between personal connection and structured methodology, and why clients are often buying trust in the coach as much as the framework itself. One of the most powerful parts of the episode is Kendra's discussion of trauma, agency, and leadership. She shares how her own lived experience shaped her approach to coaching. Her belief is clear: unresolved trauma does not stay at home. It shows up in meetings, reactions, communication, and performance. She makes the case that leadership development should address emotional triggers, somatic awareness, and inner healing, not just surface-level behavior change. The episode then turns toward the future. Kendra outlines a bold vision to reshape leadership development inside large organizations. She wants to move this work from one-on-one executive coaching into teams, programs, and eventually enterprise-wide culture change. Bill helps pressure-test that vision, asking the key business questions: Can it scale? Can it be measured? Can it improve productivity, retention, and performance? Together, they frame a practical and provocative roadmap for what next-generation leadership could look like. This is a thoughtful conversation about trust, transformation, and the courage to introduce ideas that may feel uncomfortable at first. It is also a strong example of thought leadership in motion: personal, distinctive, and designed to challenge conventional thinking. Listeners will come away with a fresh perspective on coaching, leadership, and what it truly takes to create lasting change.   Three Key Takeaways: • Thought leadership often starts when trust shows up before a title does. The guest's path began when leaders started turning to her for advice in high-stakes moments. That trust revealed her value as a coach and trusted advisor before she fully claimed that role herself. • Better leadership requires deeper inner work, not just better tactics. A core theme is that unresolved trauma, emotional triggers, and past experiences can shape how leaders react at work. The conversation argues that self-regulation, agency, and somatic awareness are not "soft" extras. They directly affect how leaders show up in the boardroom.  • The future of leadership development must be both human and scalable. The episode moves beyond one-on-one coaching and explores how this work could expand into teams, workshops, and enterprise programs. The focus is on making leadership development more effective, more measurable, and more relevant to outcomes organizations care about, especially productivity and performance. If this episode sparked your thinking about how better leadership starts with deeper self-awareness, emotional regulation, and real inner work, then Joseph Press's episode is a strong next listen. In Kendra's conversation, the focus is on what happens inside the leader: the wounds, triggers, and patterns that shape behavior at work. In Joseph's episode, the focus shifts to what leaders must do next: think beyond reactive habits, lead with greater awareness, and prepare their organizations for an uncertain future. Together, these two episodes give you both sides of the leadership equation: how to lead yourself more intentionally, and how to lead your organization more effectively through change.

The discussion begins with Dahlstrom's viral list of 55 rules for life and expands into a deeper look at health, performance, purpose, and the quiet habits that compound over decades. Cuomo and Dahlstrom talk candidly about aging, hormones, fitness, family, minimalism, and why wisdom is easy to articulate but hard to live — especially in a culture built around shortcuts, optimization, and comparison. They also explore why performance matters more than longevity alone, how chasing “more” can crowd out meaning, and why the most reliable improvements in life tend to be boring, incremental, and deeply human rather than flashy or extreme." In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, FCAH, CBHT (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks with Kendra Dahlstrom about her journey through unrealized trauma to healing body, mind, and soul. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/kendra-dahlstrom       Highlights from today's episode include:   Kendra Dahlstrom  Because I will say that, you know, 85 to 90% of people that tend to end up in trafficking systems have been molested and abused and tend to be victims of sexual harassment. And so, it's just this snowball effect of where you start to think, okay, is, is it a product of my past? Or is there something bigger going on here.   Kendra Dahlstrom  You know, it's very common of any kind of abuse, it doesn't have to be trafficking, or it doesn't have to be sexual abuse, just any kind of abuse is that you're not seen, and you're not heard. And that has been my story.   Kendra Dahlstrom So, I feel like that's a huge component to healing because a lot of times, there's things we need to hear from others on the other side, or even confirmation of things that have happened in our lives that sometimes I'll see that we didn't even know we needed confirmation, but just getting that confirmation can be really healing.     ABOUT KENDRA DAHLSTROM: Kendra helps professional women who feel spiritually disconnected shine their light brighter. Their lifestyle transforms into one of peace and empowerment through deep divine connection. They discover this through a clear pathway I help them design to live in true alignment with their highest purpose and potential. Kendra is the founder of SoulStar Awakening, a spiritual platform developed to help support busy working women to reconnect with divine love, their higher self, and inner wisdom through deep yet practical, bite-size rituals and healing treatments proven to brighten their light. Kendra Dahlstrom has been a successful leader in corporate for over 23 years, supporting her clients to stay connected to their wisdom, grounded in their strength, and creative in their pursuits of what aligns with their highest purpose and self. Kendra's Soul Star Awakening has been a gift to the consciousness movement but was born out of severe trauma and suffering. She is a survivor of sex trafficking, ritual abuse, narcissistic abuse, and the hands of corrupt leadership. Her emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing took nearly three decades, and her learnings from her long suffering now inform her unique approach. Her mission is to support women in releasing their long-suffering through connection with God and self to experience true spiritual sovereignty. She speaks worldwide about how to awaken and activate the Soul Star chakra, which is the key she believes; to ignite healing within. Core purpose/passion: My mission is to support women in releasing their long-suffering through connection with God and self to experience true spiritual sovereignty.  I do this by helping professional women who feel spiritually disconnected shine their light brighter.
