In this episode we meet Preston Vargas, the director of the Center for Black and Indigenous Praxis, and Deanna Jimenez, Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department and head of the Emerging Black Clinician Fellowship. We discuss strategies of navigating white academic space as a black scholar, the notion of bodies of culture, the importance of Afrocentric Healing modalities, scholar-activism, the importance of arts, as well some fundamental ideas in the emerging field of Black Psychology. Preston Varvas earned an M.A. in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness as well as a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies from CIIS. He also worked at CIIS as a Teaching Fellow. Preston joins us from the San Francisco Aids Foundation, where he was the Senior Director, Community Partnerships & Engagement. We are thrilled that he will be coming on board to establish the CBIP as a hub for Black and Indigenous thought, wisdoms, and ways of being. Preston carries the blessings, wisdoms, and joys of his ancestors. He was born from the land of his grandmother's ancestral Wampanoag people. It is a place where his liberated Black ancestors found family and home with the local Indigenous communities. It is also the land where his mother's Cape Verdean immigrant ancestors cultivated cranberry bogs and blueberry bushes amidst deciduous forests. Though he lives on the Pacific coast, Preston honors his ancestors, the land-water spirits of Massachusetts who periodically draw him back home. Deanna Jimenez is a somatic/transpersonal psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department at California Institute of Integral Studies and has a private practice supporting individuals, couples, and organizations. Her clinical work is centered in the dialogue of mental health as it intersects with race, culture, and spirituality. She received a B.A. in International Relations from UC Berkeley studying the efficacy of conflict resolution and cultural awareness in the international workplace. Following a career in corporate and non-profit fields, Deanna received her M.A. from JFK University in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. Dreams often bring simple moments of magic that can make all the difference, and every dream has hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. We talk today to dream guide and professional gemologist Jane Carleton. Jane describes how she knows when a person has found the right gem for them because their bodies change and their eyes light up. This is similar to dream work when an "Aha!" will light up a dreamer often without them being able to explain it. Jane shares stories about asking for waking life magic and about using talismans to help remember the dream. She also speaks about waking life inner voice experiences and shares a moment where that voice saved her during a carjacking. We take a call from Walter who shares an intense nightmare of a boy who is attacked by two giant gems. BIO. Jane E. Carleton, MA, GG holds two graduate degrees in Dream Studies, and Consciousness and Transformative Studies and has taught graduate courses on dreams at the California Institute of Integral Studies. As a Graduate Gemologist since 1984 she pursues two careers: as a dream specialist and fine jewelry appraiser. Jane is especially interested in how simple moments of magic can make all the difference, and how all dreams have hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. She is currently writing a book that shows how dreams, inner voice experiences, and synchronistic experiences can inspire us and help us navigate challenging times. Join us on this week's Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Ashley N. Campbell who speaks to us on the topics of Black culture, social impact, and the importance of diversity equity and inclusion work in higher education and industry. Dr. Campbell's diverse experiences in multicultural programming, organizational development, and data analysis have positioned her to create transformative change. Currently, Dr. Campbell serves as Director of Equity and Inclusion Research and Research Education with the Office of Equity and Inclusion at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Campbell is also a faculty member within the Integral and Transpersonal Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies. In addition, Dr. Campbell serves as Global Co-Chair with the University of Rochester's Black Alumni Network and Vice-Chair for Niche Market Insights Foundation, Incorporated. During the podcast, Dr. Campbell shares how her father ignited a passion in her for Black culture and her desire to see equity in the black community. Having seen such Black excellence in her life growing in the DC area, Dr. Campbell has long been inspired to see this excellence spread throughout her community. She understood her assignment and that in order to create change she had to learn more in order to do more. Like most, she experienced challenges on her journey to the doctorate. For her it included being a mother, wife, and working full-time which caused a moment of stillness. But she shares the importance of having friends that provided encouragement, which could be as simple as “Girl get yourself together”! While Dr. Campbell describes DEI as the new “sexy” term, engaging in the work is serious and needs to be an established priority in higher education to ensure the voices of students are valued and then actions are taken in response to their needs. Dr. Campbell earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Transformative Studies from California Institute of Integral Studies; Master of Science, Education, Inclusion, and Urban Teaching & Leadership from University of Rochester; and Bachelor of Arts in English also from University of Rochester. With such a busy schedule, Dr. Campbell also leads a nonprofit alongside her husband where she resides in upstate New York.

When it comes to self-mastery, Brandie Allen has been a catalyst for many. After successfully making it through some difficult life experiences, she decided to go back to college in her 40's and earned her Master's Degree in a mental health program. Brandie still felt like there was so much she was missing in terms of how she can help people feel better. After an appalling experience in the mental health field, she was still on the search for a more complete understanding of personal development. Nine months after completing her first Master's Degree, Brandie enrolled in a second Master's program in Consciousness & Transformative Studies, one of only a handful in the world. This was the piece that she was missing. Brandie is a personal development coach and the author of The Power of SelfMastery: Changing your life through discovery, exploration, and transformation. She is now on a mission to empower and encourage as many people as possible to learn to master the self. What we discussed: How to stop keeping yourself hostage. Being more intentional while keeping your ego at bay. How to overcome a NASTY divorce: The secret and benefits of surrendering. Blocking out the noise. STOP caring what people think about you (a 45-min. nightmare butt dial). If you have a negative emotion, it's not about anything but you! Self-awareness is the foundation of finding your identity & setting yourself FREE. Gerry Ebalaroza-Tunnell is the founder of Co3 Consulting: Co-Creating Cohesive Communities. She is a Doctoral candidate in the department of Transformative Studies and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies and identifies as a Pacific Islander born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii. Gerry is a dynamic educator who co-mingles humor and philosophy, making her teachings easy to apply. She is a fantastic facilitator who demonstrates that the best gift we can give ourselves and others is the practice of resilience; our ability to promote positive emotional perceptions, manage our stress-induced reactions and adapt to the daily challenges that life often throws our way.
Elizabeth W. Szatmari-Krasnoff, MA is currently in the Ph.D. program of Transformative Studies with a focus in Consciousness Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her current inquiry is to study the effect of sound on self-regulation of the autonomic nervous system. She is a certified Energy Healer through the Academy of Intuition Medicine Master Certification Program (MIM), and has a Sound Healing and Therapy Certificate from the Globe Institute. Additionally, she completed her training with the Heartmath Institute. Her masters degree is in Depth Psychology and Mythology from the Pacifica Graduate Institute. She was diagnosed at a young age with 50% hearing loss and has experienced the grief of two miscarriages after the birth of her son. Elizabeth has found music and sound frequencies incredibly healing emotionally, physically and spiritually. She calls music the "language of consciousness". Music, sound, thoughts and emotion are processed in the same part of our brain - by using music and sound frequencies we can help relieve the flight/fight/freeze response of trauma. This is incredible! Elizabeth's clients come to her to significantly reduce the suffering and emotional discomfort of stress, trauma, illness and fatigue through the use of Sound Medicine. Her private practice incorporates a non-medical vibroacustic sound therapy bed (aka sound bed) to provide cellular stimulation through vibration to the cells of the mind and body. This therapy delivers frequencies in a passive and non-invasive process that activates the brain and central nervous system with the specific intent of balancing, optimizing and harmonizing cells of the body and brain into a balanced state. Elizabeth suggests that anyone going through a challenging emotional time in their lives make a "conscious intent to heal playlist" to uplift their mood for at least 20 minutes a day to give your brain a break from the symptoms and rumination of grief, stress and trauma. You can email Elizabeth Krasnoff at elizabeth@iroomstudios.com to find out more about her work and upcoming conference presentations. Please subscribe and leave a review on iTunes and Google Play if you enjoyed this episode and please tell a friend who could use more information on healing modalities. In gratitude, Dr. Ivy

Today, I talk with Gary Lachman about his latest book, The Lost Knowledge of the Imagination. We discuss the need to balance the analytic "survival mode" consciousness of the external world with an older way of thinking that prioritizes the inner landscape and the imagination. We also discuss the necessity of creative outlets to regulate how much of the sensory world we take in and process, to open the valve all the way for peak experience and dial it down so we remember to do the dishes. I spend a good bit of the interview groping toward, but never reaching, the concept of a gestalt as a shorthand mental representation of external or internal objects. Some events do not pack down well to a gestalt representation, while others form new gestalts on close examination. This process of gestalt analysis and synthesis runs behind the conversation we have here. Gary Lachman is the author of twenty-one books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. He has written a rock and roll memoir of the 1970s, biographies of Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, C. G. Jung, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Emanuel Swedenborg, P. D. Ouspensky, and Colin Wilson, histories of Hermeticism and the Western Inner Tradition, studies in existentialism and the philosophy of consciousness, and about the influence of esotericism on politics and society. He writes for several journals in the UK, US, and Europe, including Fortean Times, Quest, Strange Attractor, Fenris Wolf, and his work has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, Times Educational Supplement, Guardian, Independent on Sunday, Sunday Times, Mojo, Gnosis and other publications. He lectures regularly in the UK, US, and Europe, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages. He has appeared in several film and television documentaries and on BBC Radio 3 and 4 and is on the adjunct faculty in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Before becoming a full-time writer Lachman studied philosophy, managed a new age bookshop, taught English Literature, and was a Science Writer for UCLA. He was a founding member of the pop group Blondie and in 2006 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Lachman was born in New Jersey, but since 1996 has lived in London, UK. I apologize for the occasional gaps in sound quality. These newfangled trans-Atlantic fiber-optic cables are sometimes troublesome. Or perhaps Mercury is in retrograde.

I first met Adrian and Keisha when I entered the PhD program in Transformative Studies at CIIS in San Francisco back in 2013. I had to leave the program almost immediately due to financial aid problems (making me the shortest lived doctoral candidate since Elvis got his honorary degree) but they continued on and have begun implementing what they had been learning in exciting, innovative ways. They are co-teaching a class at the Emergent Studies Institute which explores the linkages between social justice movements and the creative muse via the artistic outlets of music, literature, film, images and performance art, beginning with the Civil Rights movement to the present day. In many ways, On the Block Radio is a project that grew out of my initial interactions with folks like Adrian and Keisha. They are engaged, compassionate people who are finding ways to join their business interests, academic scholarship, creative impulses and spiritual lives into integrated, integral models of wholeness, mindfulness and balance. They are entrepreneurial, new paradigm activists who are breaking down barriers, abolishing stereotypes and rewriting what is possible for people of color in the arts, academia and business. It was an honor to talk to them in this engaging, wide-reaching conversation. And it made me REALLY want to get back to CIIS. Enjoy!

When the Internal Revenue Service sends a "non-profit" or charitable group their letter stating they are a non profit - or charitable, in the eyes of the American citizen, it makes the group appear acceptable and in good standing. Because of this, more people donate to the group and the group in some cases can receive funding through the government. What happens when the IRS adds its own agenda by approving applications who are of one political persuasion but not the other? Such is the case with the teaparty. There are hundreds of educational 501c3's especially in education that are Communistic in nature. Transformative Studies institute, Social Justice Education, Sustainable Studies to name a few. Sarah Hall Ingram, who has the title of commissioner, with oversight over tax-exempt groups, moved to the agency’s Affordable Care Act office full time by the end of 2010, six months after the tax agency began selectively scrutinizing conservative groups.
