If one opens any dictionary and you go to the entry of demon, one of the entries refers to the scientific demons. Descartes' demons, Laplace's demon, Maxwell's demon, they're not considered to be real when they're first mentioned, they're considered to be possibly real. They're trying to find a hole in theories. What they are, in the most literal sense, are little creatures that are concocted by scientists. When they're confronted with something that they don't really understand, these creatures that we have always thought of as little entities that can bend or break the laws of nature continue to be very useful and very common ways of thinking in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the natural world. These demons share similar characteristics to those other demons in the past, like Beelzebub and Lucifer. They can break the laws of nature, they're not necessarily evil, but they create power imbalances. They can be helpful or they can be mischievous to science. ------------------------------------------------------------- About Jimena Canales: Jimena Canales is an expert in 19th and 20th century history of the physical sciences, working for a better understanding of science and technology in relation to the arts and humanities. She received an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in the History of Science and a BSc in Engineering Physics from the Tecnológico de Monterrey. Her first book, A Tenth of a Second: A History explored the relation between science and history as one of the central intellectual problems of modern times. Her widely-acclaimed second book, The Physicist and the Philosopher: Einstein, Bergson and the Debate That Changed Our Understanding of Time has been translated in Chinese, Greek, Spanish and excerpted in other languages. Her third book Bedeviled: A Shadow History of Demons in Science, covering four-centuries of scientific discovery, is now available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn more about your ad choices. Whenever a computer completes an automated task, they are said to be done by computer demons. Dr. Keilholz received her Bachelor's in Physics from Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1997, and her PhD in Engineering Physics from the University of Virginia in 2004. She went on to a do a post-doc at NIH in Dr. Alan Koretsky's lab and in 2004 joined the department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University as a faculty member. She is now a full professor at Emory University and also closely affiliated with Georgia Tech. Since around 2008 she has been uncovering new spatial and temporal patterns in resting state fMRI. She was the first to identify spatial propagation of wave-like behavior in the resting state time series and in 2011 coined the term quasi-periodic patterns (QPP) to describe whole brain networks that dominate much of the resting state signal. Recently, she and others have described three such patterns that account for most of the variance. Here we not only talk about her career but also delve into how these quasi-periodic patterns mesh with the current landscape of diverse features of resting state fMRI that continue to be found. She has shown that these patterns may have a central driver and may relate to such things as vasomotion, global signal, arousal state, and attention. In general, there is much more information from basic neurophysiology to cognition that remains to be derived from resting state fMRI, and Shella is among those leading the effort. This was an incredibly stimulating and fun discission. We hope you enjoy it! Episode producers:Omer Faruk Gulban Jeff Mentch

Anders Murman is a serial entrepreneur, healthtech engineer and CEO and Co-Founder of Deversify, the company behind Acetrack. Anders joined Sarah and Russ to discuss longevity and the power of metabolism and ketosis. Ketosis is an alternative to glucose metabolism in which your body converts fats into ketone bodies and uses them as a primary energy source. Ketosis has therapeutic uses such as in epilepsy, but on the other hand, the ability to be in ketosis is also a marker of a healthy body. How can ketosis be measured? Acetone is a gas produced during the metabolism of fat and ketones and is exhaled through the lungs. Thus, the detection of acetone in the breath is direct evidence that fats or ketones are currently being banished. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when taking measurements to avoid drawing false conclusions.Anders has a Masters degree in Engineering Physics from Uppsala University and 25 years of experience from executive leadership positions in publicly traded med-tech companies such as RaySearch, Aerocrine and Pharmacology. Today, nuclear energy remains the largest low carbon source of electricity in the world. Yet looking closer at the trend reveals that it is a rapidly decreasing share of the global portfolio as plants are retired and wind and solar consistently lead new energy capacity additions. The US fleet is the largest of any nation, with 94 reactors in 28 states but is gradually shrinking as aging reactors are retired due to maintenance costs and competition from cheaper sources of power like natural gas, wind, and solar.  Over the past 5 years, the financial pressure on nuclear plants has elevated a critical public policy question: Should we take action to keep nuclear plants open? We saw this play out differently in two Midwest states with transformative legislation (both good and bad) and a massive bribery scandal ensnaring utility executives, lobbyists, and elected officials in Ohio and Illinois.  With a new reactor design, known as a small modular reactor (SMR), a production tax credit available for nuclear projects through the Inflation Reduction Act, and financing support available from the US Dept. Of Energy Loan Program Office, public utility commissions are or will be reviewing proposals for the construction of the next generation of nuclear reactors. The promoters of new nuclear reactors will point to increases in CO2 emissions in New York, New England, and Pennsylvania after nuclear facilities closed in each region. They point to countries like Germany whose reliance on natural gas and coal run counterproductive to their climate and geopolitical goals. And, they say that the US needs the baseload power that nuclear offers for continued grid stability. Arguments against nuclear include safety concerns, global nuclear proliferation, more socially advantageous options in distributed solar and wind, and eyebrow-raising costs and delays in recent projects.  With this in mind, we talk with two experts in nuclear technology and economics in the US. We discuss the role that US nuclear could play in a low-carbon electricity future, the current proposal being entertained, and the challenges facing the industry. We start with Paul Wilson, Grainger Professor of Nuclear Engineering and the Chair of the University of Wisconsin-Madison‘s Department of Engineering Physics. This is the first special section dedicated to planetary geophysics in the 40-year history of The Leading Edge. And it's timely considering the many international activities evolving rapidly toward exploration of the moon, Mars, and other planets and the availability of exploration geophysics expertise within geophysical communities. This special section features five studies demonstrating applications of geophysical technologies and methods to support future planetary exploration missions. In addition, it offers a glimpse into some developing hot topics in space exploration. In this conversation with host Andrew Geary, Alex highlights the differences geophysicists should consider when applying their skills to planetary geophysics, the types of geophysical tools and techniques that work well on other planets, and the role of Earth analogue sites in exploring viable geophysical techniques. He also explains why Jurassic Park gives a poor impression of geophysics and how geophysical techniques on the moon helped turtles on Earth. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that enables organizations to know their enterprise data and take action for privacy, protection, and perspective. My guest is Dimitri Sirota, CEO, and Co-founder of BigID Dimitri has over a decade of experience as a privacy expert and identity veteran and is an established serial entrepreneur, investor, mentor, and strategist. He is also recognized as one of the leading authorities in startups and company team building, receiving numerous recognitions, including being named an Entrepreneur of the Year finalist by Ernst & Young in 2021 (New York) and 2022 (Florida). Dimitri holds an M.Sc. in Engineering Physics from The University of British Columbia and a B.Sc. Honors in Physics from McGill University. Today he's the CEO and co-founder of BigID, a modern data intelligence platform that helps customers solve data protection, privacy, and governance challenges. Their thinking: Data drives business. Data is a critical factor for all businesses – not just to persevere, but to continue to innovate. As such, BigID is on a mission to help every type of organization know their data, take action on their data, and unleash their data's value to do that. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Dmitri to my podcast. We explore the challenges companies face in rethinking their approach to data where they essentially have become the custodian, as opposed to the owner. Dmitri explains the novel approach they've taken to solve this. He shares his route towards product-market fit and carving out a business model that could fuel exponential growth. He tells about their approach to creating defensible differentiation, and an ability to expand their story ahead of the competition catching up. Last but not least, he shares his advice on creating a business software business that creates products that customers fall in love with.  Here's one of his quotes So early on, once we did our straw man strategy, we doubled down on one particular area. Once we found kind of a pressure point, we said, Okay, let's just focus on this and do a good job here. And so that's what got us through the first two years, I sometimes described that as a swim lane. We needed a clear definable swim lane that we could own, that was differentiated from other technology players. And we went down that path and invested in it, and it actually worked out for us. We were able to do the classic 5x revenue in year one. 3x revenue in year two. During this interview, you will learn four things: How to create your own blue ocean within a large red ocean The single most important answer to look for when defining product strategy When's the right moment to move on and expand your story  The things you should avoid doing as an early stage B2B SaaS founder For more information about the guest from this week: Dimitri Sirota Website BigID Subscribe to the Daily Value Inspiration Stressed by the thought of 'not enough' traction? Tom Valone, Ph.D., P.E., is a retired Patent Examiner who has specialized in Future Energy technologies developed by Nikola Tesla and other inventors since 1984 when he gained his Masters Degree in Engineering Physics. He worked as a College Instructor in Physics, Robotics and Engineering Physics and earned his Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in 1990. He began working as a Patent Examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 1996. In 1999, Dr. Valone organized his first Conferences on Future Energy that was scheduled to be held at the US State Department, but led to media controversy when one of the scheduled presenters was to speak about the viability of Cold Fusion technology. The resulting Cold Fusion controversy led to the State Department officially withdrawing its support, forcing the Conference to be relocated to another venue, and his sacking by the USPTO. This led to a six year legal battle, which resulted in him being eventually reinstated in 2005, after gaining his Ph.D. in General Engineering. Dr Valone retired in 2017 after a 20 year career at the USPTO as a federal employee, and began working full time at his non-government organization, the Integrity Research Institute. He has written or edited multiple books dealing with Nikola Tesla, electrogravitic propulsion, electrotherapy, and zero point energy. He has personally invented or assisted in the invention of many breakthrough technologies, which are available at the Integrity Research Institute. In this interview with Dr. Michael Salla, Dr. Valone discusses how he became interested in Future Energy, Nikola Tesla, a century of suppression of breakthrough technologies, the role of the USPTO in this suppression, the controversy over his 1999 Conferences on Future Energy, the creation of his Integrity Research Institute, and some of the breakthrough electrogravitic propulsion, electrotherapy, and zero point energy inventions he has personally worked on or whose development he has supported. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/exopolitics/support

When we hear the word research, most of us think of innovative breakthrough treatments and technologies. But applied clinical research could not be possible without another type of research called basic science research in which scientists study the fundamental processes of the human body. In this episode, we'll learn what basic science research is and how it applies to the area of kidneys and kidney disease.   In this episode, we spoke with: Hannah Wesselman Hannah Wesselman is a PhD candidate at the University of Notre Dame studying the genetic mechanisms underlying kidney development in Dr. Rebecca Wingert's lab. Prior to her dissertation work, Hannah worked with Dr. Larissa Myaskovsky at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Health Care, and their collaboration continued as Dr. Myaskovsky moved to the University of New Mexico Center for Healthcare Equity in Kidney Disease. During this time, Hannah worked directly with kidney transplant patients, and later published in CJASN on social determinants and race disparities in kidney transplant. Inspired by the strength of the kidney community, Hannah has returned to bench science in the hopes of identifying new treatment targets and has continued to connect with kidney patients through NKF advocacy. Holly Kramer, M.D., MPH Holly Kramer, M.D., MPH, is a practicing nephrologist who conducts research connecting nutrition and kidney health.
