Building America Ft. Chuck Goodrich Ep. 100

The Line

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2025 145:50

Building America is a phrase I heard over and over again as I toured the facility at Gaylor Electric and saw their innovation center or their “high school”, as they call it, where they have people come and learn. It truly was inspiring. I sat down with one of their apprentices, one of their journeymen, and I got the opportunity to close the conversation with the CEO, Chuck Goodrich. What I was struck most by was something that I've always wanted to communicate well to people about the skilled trades—you can start in the trades not knowing anything about what we do or how the work is done, but if you're willing to watch and wait, you will learn. And then if you're willing to do the work, put in the time, the opportunities are endless. I think that these conversations really make that clear. Chuck started by working hard and now he's the CEO of an almost billion dollar company with more than 4000 people and growing. They truly are building America. This is why we need the next generation to be built. It's not just about buildings. It's not just about data centers. It's about people and this is something that Gaylor Electric understands. We made it a longer episode to celebrate our milestone of 100 episodes of The Line. We hope you enjoy.

In this inspiring conversation, Cheryl shares: The journey behind her new book, The Black Family Who Built America: The McKissicks, Two Centuries of Daring Pioneers. How her mother courageously took over the family business after tragedy struck. Lessons from navigating a male- and white-dominated industry while building relationships and leading with integrity. The power of resilience, prayer, and community when starting from scratch in New York. Personal stories of overcoming health scares and why legacy and family history matter more than ever. From stories of scrappy entrepreneurship in a Manhattan walk-up to multimillion-dollar projects like the Barclays Center and JFK Airport, Cheryl offers both blueprint and inspiration for anyone determined to build their own table—and their own legacy. [Dr Alexander MacDonald]We've been lucky. The day could come where most of the world loses electricity at exactly the same time. So we have to modernise electricity centred around the supergrid that protects the flow of electricity because it is life-giving.[Nick Breeze]In this ClimateGen episode, I'm speaking with Dr Alexander McDonald, a former head of climate research at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, NOAA. Alexander outlines the need to urgently upgrade electrical energy generation in the US and around the world using supergrids. The vulnerability of existing grids was illustrated recently in Spain and Portugal, where an outage hit the entire Iberian Peninsula in May 2025.Without a massive transition to resilient electrification, we are all exposed to huge risks posed by power outages. In the next episode, I speak with Dr Sumitra Das about the proposed cooling plan for India. What we have found last year, 37 cities crossed 45 degrees Celsius and with humidity that means 55 degrees to 65 degrees Celsius, real fill that you'd have.90% of the people do not have air conditioning today. Dr Sumitra Das and his colleagues have proposed a national cooling policy plan in an effort to counter the deaths caused by extreme heatwaves. This includes geoengineering techniques that many will find controversial. And yet, as the emissions keep rising, so do the temperatures and the humidity. Thank you to all members and subscribers for supporting this channel. There are more episodes in the pipeline covering interrelated climate topics from experts across the globe.Thank you for listening. Alexander, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to me today. We're going to talk about the whole supergrid proposal that you're very involved in.And I just wanted to ask you to give a brief status quo in the US for electricity generation and transmission and also considering the future demand for, especially when we're talking about new technologies like AI, for example.

In this episode, I talk with Ryan Johnson, co-founder and CEO of Culdesac, about building the United States' first car-free neighborhood from scratch. We discuss everything from winning over the fire department with foldable ladders to building hundreds of units without building a single parking garage. Ryan also opens up about how designing for people—rather than cars—has paid off big time for both residents and local retailers, and why he believes autonomous vehicles, ride-sharing, and a passion for walkability will reshape cities nationwide.TAKEAWAYSWalkability Isn't a Niche Luxury—It's a Mass Market Demand. The majority of Americans would pay more to live in a walkable neighborhood, and 92% of Gen Z is on board. This isn't just a trend—it's a tidal wave.Car-Free Living Works—Even in Phoenix. If a walkable neighborhood can thrive in a sprawling, car-centric city like Phoenix, it can work anywhere. The key? Thoughtful design, mixed-use spaces, and actual community-building.Parking Garages Are the Next Real Estate Mistake. Developers still pouring millions into structured parking are setting themselves up for regret. AV ride-hailing, changing transportation habits, and shifting zoning laws are making them obsolete faster than people realize.Retail Thrives When It's a Destination, Not an Afterthought. Culdesac started with six planned retail spaces—now they have 21, and local businesses are thriving. Why? Because people actually want to be there.Building for Humans, Not Traffic Engineers, Changes Everything. The way we build cities has quietly been making us more isolated, unhealthy, and unhappy. Culdesac's design flips that script—prioritizing gathering spaces, green areas, and human-scale density.CHAPTERS00:00 The Need for Change in Urban Design02:57 Introducing Cul-de-Sac: A New Vision for Neighborhoods06:12 Designing Walkable Communities: The Cul-de-Sac Approach08:54 Innovative Infrastructure: Rethinking Parking and Access11:50 Financing the Future: Capital Strategies for New Developments15:04 Community and Belonging: The Heart of Urban Living18:07 Navigating Challenges: Working with City Regulations21:07 Phased Development: Learning and Adapting in Real Time24:00 The Impact of COVID-19 on Construction and Costs26:58 Market Dynamics: Setting Rents in a Changing Landscape29:43 The Evolution of Walkable Neighborhoods32:03 Creating Community Through Intentional Design34:48 Retail and Community Engagement37:59 The Role of Local Businesses in Urban Development40:50 Innovative Urban Design and Architecture43:54 Challenges and Surprises in Development45:41 The Future of Walkable Communities50:18 Leadership and Vision in Development55:41 Advice for Aspiring DevelopersCONNECT WITH RYANCuldesac: https://culdesac.comLinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanjohnsonazInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/liveculdesac/Twitter: https://x.com/ryanmjohnson?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorCONNECT WITH AUSTIN TUNNELLNewsletter: https://playbook.buildingculture.com/https://www.instagram.com/austintunnell/https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-tunnell-2a41894a/https://twitter.com/AustinTunnellCONNECT WITH BUILDING CULTUREhttps://www.buildingculture.com/https://www.instagram.com/buildingculture/https://twitter.com/build_culturehttps://www.facebook.com/BuildCulture/SPONSORSThank you so much to the sponsors of The Building Culture Podcast!Sierra Pacific Windows: https://www.sierrapacificwindows.com/One Source Windows: https://onesourcewindows.com/

Today, the prosecution finished their questioning of Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen. Some of the biggest news dropped today, bringing to light news that Cohen stole money from the Trump Organization and then lied about it. The KSL at Night hosts are joined by Greg Skordas, KSL Legal Analyst, to break down what happened today and what it means for the rest of this trial.   Role of third parties in the new presidential debates  When the modified presidential debates were announced, voters started showing some concern about the elimination of the third parties. Now, we’re learning that 7 in 10 voters want to see third-party and independent candidates in presidential debates this cycle. Taylor and Rusty discuss the decision to modify debates and how it called into question the potency of the long-standing debate organizer.   Voters’ concerns about inflation and how it’ll affect elections Lots of issues affect how people vote in elections. Recently the Solution Center added the Building Science Advisor which is a no-cost, web-based tool that provides expert guidance on the moisture durability and energy efficiency of new and retrofit wall assembly designs. The Building Science Advisor helps teach building science principles and can inform residential building designers, builders, engineers, and students of building science, on how to specify energy-efficient, moisture-durable wall systems, with a simple, intuitive user-interface. The tool leverages expert knowledge and a database of thousands of pre-simulated hygrothermal models to provide rapid feedback and expert guidance on wall assembly design, tailored to your specific climate zone. If you use this simple modeling tool you can fail fast and move forward quickly while limiting risk exposure and increasing cost effective design. The company holds more in-ground vanadium resources than any other US producer, and its White Mesa Mill in Utah is the only fully-licensed and operating conventional uranium mill in the U.S, and with licensed capacity of 8+ million pounds of uranium per year.Energy Fuels is currently preparing to resume uranium production at its Pinyon Plain Mine and La Sal Complex, which together have an annual licensed capacity of over 1 million pounds of uranium. With the uranium market showing signs of a structural supply deficit as demand grows and supply declines, the company is well-positioned to benefit from higher uranium prices needed to incentivize new mine production. The company is building a critical minerals hub and currently recovers uranium, high-purity vanadium, REE, and potentially radium-226. Energy Fuels has produced small quantities of rare earth elements in the past and is looking to significantly ramp up production. Energy Fuels has a strong balance sheet with over $200 million in working capital and is preparing for potential M&A in both the uranium and rare earth sectors. View Energy Fuels company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/energy-fuelsSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Trevor Crain, Mobility Research and Education Program Manager, Argonne National Laboratory joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss building America's electric vehicle workforce. The conversation begins with Trevor sharing his thoughts on developing the workforce of the future as society shifts to electrified forms of mobility and how this skill set can transition to other industries. Our team here at Argonne looks at how do we build revolutionary and innovative programs that help all of our workforce program participants be able to address all these different technologies. – Trevor CrainAs the workforce is developed to work on electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed to support EVs, Argonne is working to ensure that students have the skill sets needed to succeed even when the technology or standards change. One of the ways that Argonne is helping students develop the skill set of the future is through the EcoCar Challenge. The EcoCar Challenge is a multi-year program where 15 North American universities teams come together to develop next generation electric vehicle technologies and automation are energy efficient. These teams are getting real-world, hands on experiences. We are taking things out of the research realm and into the actual application realm onboard our real test vehicles. – Trevor CrainBernstein Research is projecting that battery electric vehicles will reach 40% marketshare globally by 2030. If this forecast comes to realization, the workforce development and the skills needed to service these vehicles will has to be accelerated and developed today. One way to potentially accelerate the work force development for EVs is through apprenticeships where students do not take on debt. This is just one of the many options that could be implemented to ensure that the workforce of the future is ready today.Expanding the conversation, Trevor discusses the skill set that students learn as part of the EcoCar Challenge. As part of the challenge, students are encouraged to think from a customer centric approach. Would a consumer want this feature? Would a consumer pay for this feature? Does this feature increase the range of the vehicle?Wrapping up the conversation, Trevor shares his thoughts on electric vehicles.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Tuesday, June 20, 2023See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The past two years have been a watershed for American energy policy. A series of new laws – most notably the Inflation Reduction Act – have invigorated the domestic clean energy industry. At the same time, the war in Ukraine and the volatility in energy markets have stressed the importance of energy security.  In the midst of all this, the US Department of Energy has the difficult task of responding to the urgency of climate change and implementing the United States' new climate policies.  What are the major opportunities and challenges afforded by the IRA? What is the role of American energy in a time of global upheaval? And what is the Biden administration doing to bring about a more just and secure energy transition? This week, host Jason Bordoff talks with United States Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. They discuss the American energy sector, the Inflation Reduction Act, and how the Department of Energy is using its executive authority to address the climate crisis.  Secretary Granholm has overseen the Department of Energy and its nearly $50 billion budget since February 2021. She previously served as governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011 and as Michigan's attorney general from 1999 to 2003. Secretary Granholm was also a distinguished professor of practice at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Law. The episode is all about how we best prepare students to be workers and leaders in today's technology-driven society.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:CTE is STEM, and STEM is CTE: Key features of STEM learning, like math, critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and technology skills are all embedded into the learning outcomes for SkillsUSA's Career and Technical Education programs. Chelle helps us see how these STEM skills are necessary and used in fields like healthcare, manufacturing, culinary arts, hospitality, business, automotive and more. Some skills don't change: Conversations in TechEd often focus on what's new and emerging, but Chelle reminds us that some skills are foundational to our students' education. SkillsUSA has always focused on: the dignity of work, developing the whole person (not just technical skills), pride in innovation and ingenuity, lifelong learning and adaptability, and a commitment to helping others and giving back through service.Industry drives updates to standards, skills and technology: SkillsUSA relies on industry partnerships to guide the development of new standards, competitions and skill areas for students across the country. This is especially true in competitions, where industry determines the standards and judges the competitions.ResourcesTo learn more about SkillsUSA: www.skillsusa.orgConnect with SkillsUSA on social media:Facebook  |  Twitter  |  Instagram  |  YouTube  |  LinkedInEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/skillsusa/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

In this seventh episode of the Stanford d.school spotlight; Lisa Kay Solomon gives a peek of the thoughts around her upcoming book about her recent innovative civics exercises with learners. Are our systems designed for short term rewards and is the design of civics and business at odds with the future? The conversation features a broad range of topics from design, futures, civics, the importance of agency to extra high-quality civics education. Futures thinking, practices, and mindsets are teachable and learnable. How might we think differently about the image of the future that we could bring to life, to be a shaper as opposed to a reactor. It might seem hard, but we can start small. Lisa Kay Solomon is a futures and design educator, author, and social entrepreneur focused on helping people develop the leadership skills to become active, compassionate agents of positive change. With nearly over 20 years of design, scenario-planning, and leadership work, Lisa's work focuses on the question: How do we help leaders and learners of all ages not just prepare for the future, but help them develop the mindsets, skillsets and practices required to shape more sustainable, inclusive, robust futures? Named to the Thinkers50 2022 Radar List, Lisa co-authored the bestselling books Moments of Impact: How to Design Strategic Conversations that Accelerate Change, and Design A Better Business: New Tools, Skills, and Mindset and Strategy for Innovation, which has been translated into over a dozen languages. Lisa created the popular LinkedIn Learning Courses Leading Like a Futurist and Redesigning How We Work for 2021, and has written extensively on helping leaders productively navigate ambiguity through teachable and learnable practices.Currently a Designer in Residence and Lecturer at Stanford University's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, Lisa teaches a variety of futures-oriented classes, including one of the d.school's most popular courses, Inventing the Future, which exposes students to practices of applied imagination, strategic foresight, immersive world building, and creativity. Lisa's course design utilizes immersive experiences like participating in 50 year future utopia and dystopia debates on emerging technology in order to move beyond questions of “can we build it?” to "should we build it?” As one student commented after the class, “I used to think that thinking about the future was a gene intrinsic to talent, and now I think I have the skills and tools to shape it myself." In 2021, she launched The Futures Series at the Stanford d.school, which brought diverse futures thinkers from around the world to share and democratize future-shaping practices. Guests included Dr. Lonny Brooks and Ahmed Best on Afrofutures, Meredith Hutchison and Aisha Bain on Ancestral Intelligence, Leah Zaidi on WorldBuilding, Minister Faust on Science Fiction and Pro-social competitions, and Riel Miller on UNESCO's Future Literacy, among others. She also initiated experiential professional development programs such as “Afro-Rithms in Classrooms” with the National Writing Project, and workshops focused on building futures literacies such as building empathy for the future and navigating time scales and polarities.Lisa is passionate about connecting her work between boardrooms to classrooms, bringing her work with executives and leaders at multinational companies to leaders and educators in K12 schools. She recently launched a new podcast called New View EDU, co-hosted with the National Association of Independent Schools, to help school leaders shift their posture and priorities to infuse K12 education with imagination, social and emotional wellbeing, and creative agency for the future. Named one of ixDA's Women of Design 2020, Lisa is also the founder and driving force beyond Vote by Design, Building America's Teammates, and #AllVoteNoPlay, a national initiative which transforms Election Day as a day “off” from official collegiate athletic activities into a day “on” for civic engagement. Working closely with college coaches, civic educational leaders and student leaders, the experiential programs reached tens of thousands of young voters, coaches, and administrators in relevant, accessible, meaningful civic learning and action. Lisa's work in the civics arena is focused on helping next generation voters grow in their own sense of power and agency over the futures they want to inhabit. Through creating design-driven, agency-oriented programs with a bias toward changemaking action, Lisa aims to empower young people to create a more just and inclusive world.Hosted by The Learning Future's very own Louka Parry, indulge your cortex in some modern thinking at the forefront of educational design with our amazing guest.Transcription upon request - e-mail hello@thelearningfuture.com
