Episode 8 Barbara NantaisIn the early morning hours of August 13, 1978, 15 year-old Barbara Nantais and her boyfriend, 17 year-old James Alt were brutally attacked as they slept in their sleeping bag on Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, California. Barbara was sexually assaulted, and her breast mutilated. She was strangled and beaten to death. James was also bludgeoned leaving him with severe head wounds and no recollection of the attack or the killer. After he regained consciousness, he stumbled to get help unable to see clearly from the attack. When first responders arrived, they found evidence of a sadistic and bloody attack. Jim was rushed to the hospital and doctors raced to save him and repair the terrible wounds he had suffered. Eventually, metal plates had to be put in Jim's skull. As Jim recovered in his hospital bed from his wounds, shockingly, he soon found himself on the suspect list, a list that he claims he is still on to this day.News of the 1978 attack shocked Torrey Beach area residents, but it wouldn't be the only shocking crime to occur there. Just over 6 years after the murder of Barbara Nantais, 14 year-old Claire Hough was murdered on Torrey Pines State Beach just a couple hundred yards from where Barbara Nantais was murdered. And as in Barbara's case, Claire's breasts were also mutilated. Despite DNA pointing to possible suspects, one a known sex offender, and one a San Diego Crime Lab employee, there has been no official resolution in either murder. In this episode, the team dives into the clues in both murders to see if there is anything that actually links them, and they are joined by Jim Alt who walks us through the awful details surrounding the attack on him and Barbara, and he discusses his efforts to see justice done, as well as his frustration with police investigating the case. *** VOTE VOTE VOTE! When Claire Hough was murdered on a beach near her grandparents' home, authorities saved all the evidence with the hope DNA would advance to a point that the case could be closed. In 2012 they got that break. Only problem was the sample came back as a match for two different men who had (otherwise) nothing in common. 00:00 Intro/Mass Hysterical 07:50 Case Material Begins @themasshysteriapodcast (IG) themasshysteriapodcast@gmail.com Joe Turner's Blog: https://www.joeturnerbooks.com/post/the-unsolved-murder-of-judith-vieweg-the-birth-of-a-serial-killer-or-pure-coincidence *His book, The Boy in the Walls, coming soon!* Sources: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/public-safety/story/2022-02-06/cold-case-brown-part-three https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/10/a-death-at-torrey-pines/403186/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mass-hysteria-pod/support

Barbara Nantais and Claire Hough were both found dead at Torrey Pines Beach six years apart. The state of the two girls pointed to a serial killer, but police were slow to catch on to the similarities. Decades later, new DNA evidence would bring some truly disturbing suspects to light—and the knowledge that Barbara and Claire might not be the only victims.
Let’s be frank: the healthcare industry needs help. Medical records have far too many inconsistencies, patients struggle to find ways to transfer information from one doctor to another, and as the world slowly begins to reopen and the focus on health increases, the industry is going to have to lean on modern technology more than ever in order to track and maintain records as it relates to COVID-19. “There are several like electronic health information systems out there and their operability is pretty poor. You have to be able to get that information [to your doctors]. You have to be able to integrate it and make it accessible to your patients, as well as your primary care providers. And, that's something that we do better than anybody else.”Claire Hough is the CTO of Carbon Health, a tech-enabled healthcare provider that is developing data-driven programs in an effort to help modernize the healthcare industry by removing the boundaries of health care to create high-quality experiences. On this episode of IT Visionaries, Claire details how Carbon Health has used technology and data to solve a wide array of issues in healthcare, including the delivery care model. Plus, Claire dives into her past experiences scaling startups such as Netscape, Napster, and Udemy.Main TakeawaysUser Error: There’s a saying when it comes to data, “garbage in, garbage out.” When it comes to data entry, this still applies because there is still far too much room for user error. Workers are manually inputting data in spreadsheets allowing for a margin of error, and this is one of the biggest problems facing the healthcare industry. By using an automated system that removes the physical person from that process, you can access a clearer picture of your data without concerns about input accuracy. Not Enough Information: The healthcare industry is overrun with processes that are not streamlined or convenient for patients. When a patient gives information to a physician or an urgent care provider, that information remains only with those sources rather than shared widely to the patient’s broader healthcare team.. By creating a central record system that controls every aspect of the healthcare process, companies are able to not only have the most accurate information regardless of where a patient is seen, but it creates a better overall customer experience for your patient who no longer have to repeatedly provide the same information.Built to Scale: When you’re scaling your engineering teams, you have to think about what the company is going to look like in the near future and not just what you need in the present. Make sure the people you are bringing on can work in a fast-paced environment and possess multiple skill sets.IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Welcome to TCTSd ep #14. Today I am going to be telling you the chilling and frustrating tale of Barbara Nantais, and Claire Hough. That's right today we are getting a two for the price of one story. The vibe of a beach can dramatically change depending on the time of day. When the suns out it is packed full of surfers catching waves, and families dotting the shoreline, but at night the place empties out. The air gets chilly, and the vibe goes from fun and playful, to serene and mysterious. A opportune time to bloody the sand some might say... Jim's FB Group: "Surviving Victims of Violent Crimes." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 59 Barbara Nantais In August, 1978, 15 year old Barbara Nantais was murdered in San Diego at Torrey Pines State Beach as she slept in her sleeping bag on the beach. The attack on her was brutal and sadistic. Barbara's 17 year old boyfriend James Alt was also attacked and barely survived. He was left to cope with four decades of PTSD. Meanwhile, a second murder on that same beach in 1984 of 14 year old Claire Hough displayed nearly identical clues, pointing to a possible serial killer. Two suspects were developed in that case via DNA, but both suspects died before either could face justice, and police to this point have not been able to connect both murders via physical evidence. James Alt discusses in this episode, the brutal attack that left his girlfriend Barbara dead, and him fighting for his life. Two teenage girls are found murdered on the same beach 6 years apart. Barbara Nantais is murdered in 1978 and Claire Hough is murdered in 1984. The specifics of the murders are very similar but police can't connect the two and can't find a viable suspect for either crime. It would not be until many years later when advancements in DNA technology would help shed some light on these mysterious murders. But what does the DNA actually tell investigators about who committed these murders? Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the facts of these tragic and mysterious murders.
