At the end of the day, and as we walked towards the exit, we hear the voice of a tour guide announcing the sighting of a Quetzal. We rush to his encounter, and through his telescope, we're able to enjoy a close-up of this magnificent bird. A magical ending to a restorative day connecting with nature. In this episode, Jared and Annalise discuss their time photographing rare and endemic species in the cloud forests of Panama. Forget everything you think of about the tropics when it comes to exploring the forests that grow at 8,000 feet in the mountains. Dripping with moss and bromeliads, the high mountain peaks are like islands in the sky. Each mountain holds its own menagerie of endemic species and thanks to the elevation, each and everyone must be cold adapted despite being so close to the equator. Working from purpose built blinds to photograph species of birds that are rarely seen, let alone photographed, an ornate hawk eagle made an unexpected and dramatic cameo appearance in the forest nearby. Jared and Annalise discuss the challenges of suddenly finding themselves confronted with such an extraordinary opportunity in the deep forest. One of those challenges is getting past, psychologically, the urge to create knee jerk documentary photographs. Despite the rarity of a situation, composition and story are still of upmost importance - likely even more so that normally from the perspective of making a living with your photography. And in this episode, the hosts discuss how they worked to pull together creative compositions to move past the oh-so-boring bird on a stick composition, and instead create images that go beyond the trite and cliche to tell stories that sell to magazines. This is a guided meditation for sleep based on experiencing a secret cloud forest in a remote part of Costa Rica. Cloud forests are unique environments in tropical and subtropical regions characterized by high moisture levels and persistent cloud cover, creating a diverse array of flora and fauna. The cloud forests of Costa Rica are some of the most biodiverse places on earth, containing more than 500,000 species of plants, animals, and insects. This meditation invites you to relax and imagine yourself standing at the edge of a lush forest surrounded by misty clouds. As you move deeper into the forest, you'll experience the serene, almost ethereal quality of the surroundings. The forest is alive with the sounds of birds and animals, and the air is thick with the scent of damp earth, fresh vegetation, and hints of floral aromas. You'll be fully immersed in this moment, allowing your body to rest and drift into a peaceful sleep. A decade ago, the cloud forests of Kenya's Chyulu Hills were on the brink of collapse, threatening water supplies for the Tsavo and Amboseli Plains — and for the coastal City of Mombasa, 250 kilometers away. Then the Kenya Forestry and Wildlife Services teamed up with the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, the Big Life Foundation, the Sheldrake Wildlife Trust, Conservation International, and, most importantly, grazing collectives, called “community group ranches” to launch the Chyulu Hills REDD+ Project — a thirty-year private-public partnership designed to save the hills by overhauling the rural economy. The Mashpi cloud forest in Ecuador grows where water vapor from the Amazon meets the Andes mountains. A lush forest home to over 400 bird species, it faces threats from deforestation and mining. Biologist Paola Moscoso and others are pushing for the Mashpi cloud forest to be protected by the UNESCO World Heritage Center on the basis of “acoustic value,” because of the rich diversity of natural sounds heard in the ecosystem.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. To try to address the biodiversity crisis that threatens as many as 1 million species with extinction, thousands of delegates from around the world are meeting in Montreal with a goal of updating the United Nations treaty on biological diversity. The stakes are high for places like Palawan in the Philippines, which is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth and has been protected by the Indigenous Batak people for thousands of years. Also, cloud forest ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots but they're quickly becoming warmer and drier with the climate crisis. So each fall researchers in the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica conduct a bird census to see what migrant and resident birds are using the forest and how that's changing with time. And Living on Earth's gardening guru, Michael Weishan, joins us to share some tips on how to craft festive holiday wreaths, garlands, and Christmas trees with natural materials from your own backyard. Ecuador was the first country to adopt rights of nature into its constitution, but its Constitutional Court (Ecuador's equivalent to the U.S. Supreme Court) has not heard many cases in the decade or so since the law was added.
