Club Paradise begins in Chicago Illinois where a retired firefighter played by Robin Williams takes his insurance money and opens a resort at a tropical island. Directed by Harold Ramis, this movie could've been another lampoon-esque classic but instead gets too busy with various themes and subplots muddy up the films cohesiveness. Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy are both funny in this.

Jamaican Reggae legend JIMMY CLIFF was born in 1948 as James Chambers and proved to be an accomplished performer at an early age. At 14 he moved to Kingston and took the surname Cliff as a proclamation of the heights he imagined he would reach. In Kingston, Jimmy released the 1962 hit, Hurricane Hattie and numerous other recordings throughout the rest of the 1960s. Jimmy Cliff moved to the UK in the late 60s and was bitterly disappointed with the racism he encountered there. His song, Waterfall, won the Brazilian International Song Festival in 67 and in 68. He followed up Waterfall with the release of the protest song, Vietnam. In 1970, he enjoyed new success with his cover of the Cat Stevens song, Wild World. Jimmy returned to Jamaica and left Island Records as they increasingly focused their attention on his protege, Bob Marley. It was at this time that Jimmy Cliff adopted the Muslim faith and the name, Na'im Bashir. In 1972, Cliff starred in the film, The Harder They Come. The film and its soundtrack, comprised mainly of songs he wrote. Their instant popularity, along with his album Follow My Mind propelled Jimmy Cliff into stardom. For years he continued to release albums that were innovative and his songs always carried powerful messages. His 1985 album Cliff Hanger won a Grammy Award and his cover of I Can See Clearly Now for the soundtrack to the film, Cool Runnings reached the Top 20 chart in the United States in 1993. Cliff continued his acting career in the films Club Paradise and Marked for Death. In this week's episode, Jimmy Cliff discusses his journey as a musician and actor, sharing stories about his popular songs and the impact they had on people's lives. He talks about the inspiration behind his hit songs and how they motivated others to pursue their dreams. Cliff also reflects on his experience acting. He discusses his relationship with Bob Marley and his role in discovering and promoting other talented artists including Desmond Decker. He also tells us about his latest album 'Refugees' which addresses one of his most personal causes. Jimmy Cliff's success in the music industry, in his words, has been driven by his confidence in himself and his ability to follow his own path. He is absolutely inspirational to chat with. I'm sure you will find him a delight to listen to. - "You can get it if you really want." - Jimmy Cliff To learn more about Jimmy Cliff head to his website https://www.jimmycliff.com/ Jimmy Cliff continues to record music and tour the world.

We’re right on top of that, Rose! It’s true. We are here with Joanna Cassidy. You Might Know Her From Six Feet Under, Blade Runner, Call Me Fitz, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Buffalo Bill, Club Paradise, and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. Joanna talked to us about playing Brenda’s narcissistic mother Margaret Chenowith on Six Feet Under and the series perfect ending, reimagining the snake dance that Zhora never got to do in Blade Runner, learning how to do Ava Gardner’s makeup for her role in Roger Rabbit, and plans for the Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead sequel or reboot. All that plus Ava Gardner and Mickey Rooney’s relationship, Bob Hoskins being hot as hell, and Joanna playing gay with trailblazer Meredith Baxter.    Follow us on social media: @damianbellino || @rodemanne    Alice Ghostley in “Greased Lightning” Grease 2 penis reveal Moonstruck was great, Nic Cage has a wooden hand though? Cher won the Oscar for Moonstruck over Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction Glenn has 8 Oscar nominations (most nominated with no wins!) and got a Razzie nom this year too.  Two lead women in Moonstruck are not Italian (Dukakis:Greek / Cher: Armenian) Joanna’s laugh is iconic  Played Brenda’s mom on Six Feet Under, which maybe has the best finale of all time Starred Zhora in Blade Runner but never got to do Zhora’s sexy snake dance because the movie went over budget. Ridley Scott re-shot her famous through-the-plate-glass scene since it was clear that her stunt-double Lee Pulford had a really bad wig (that was totally visible in the original final cut)  Joanna filmed the sexy snake dance herself and uploaded it on her YouTube since she has snake handling experience (the snake in the movie was hers!) Played Rose Lindsey in the iconic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead and the M&M bit was hers Once had a child yell “I’m right on top of that Rose” to her in Turks and Caicos Played gay opposite Meredith Baxter in Other Mothers. Meredith is of course famous for playing an extremely heterosexual mom on Family Ties.  She and Meredith reunited on Switched at Birth Meredith Baxter came out publicly in 2009 Her hair was dyed brown for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and she put on a little Ava Gardner to get into character.  How did Mickey Rooney get Ava Gardner? Charles Fleischer was the voice of Roger Rabbit and he came in every day in a rabbit suit Bob Hoskins was sexy and maybe in the mafia!? Unearthed: Memphis
Season 2: Episode Two: Earnestine & Hazel’s

Unearthed: Memphis

The spot that is now occupied by Earnestine and Hazel’s at 531 South Main St was once the exact opposite of what it was to become in the future. In the late 1800s, it was built as a church, complete with fancy doors and a steeple. The area that the corner building occupies was considered “South Memphis”. It was a residential area that remained so until the early 1900s, when the railroad was built. South Memphis opened two new train stations and 50 passenger cars would come through every day. At that point, the area became able to support businesses. Sadly, the church burned down some time in the early 1900s. I couldn’t find an exact date, but the assessor's office lists the current building’s date as 1918. That year, a new building was erected, the same one you see today, and it was purchased by Abe Plough and turned into one of his Pantaze Drugstores.  Abe Plough is a name synonymous with Memphis. In 1908, he borrowed $125 from his father and started his own business, Plough Chemical Company. He pedaled his “antiseptic healing oil”, that he created in a room above his father’s shop, to the drug stores in and around Memphis. His patent medicine took off and within a couple of years he doubled his profits.  Side note: patent medicines are basically ones that marketed as medicines, but have no proven effectiveness. They are protected by trademarks but their ingredients are generally not completely disclosed. You’ll often hear them referred to as “tonics” or “elixirs”. With his additional money, Plough found his way into the cosmetics and sunscreen business and eventually acquired St. Joseph’s Aspirin brand. Over the next 100 years, Plough Inc became a multi-million dollar company, partnering with Schering Company. Schering Plough and the Plough Foundation became a major philanthropic entity in Memphis.  But let’s rewind. Plough opened Pantaze Drugstores in the 1930s. Apparently Pantaze were the Walgreens of its day. There were 7 Pantaze drug stores on Main St and in the downtown area. It was during his time owning Pantaze that Plough started to expand his brand and continued on to find his fame.  Now in the building on S. Main, Plough only used the bottom floor of the building for his pharmacy/sundry store, so he rented the upstairs to two beauticians, Earnestine Mitchell and Hazel Jones.  Side note: a sundry is basically a general store that sells miscellaneous items One of the products that Plough had made was a hair straightening product and it worked quite well. Not only did the ladies use it in their salon, it was also being used all over the eastern part of the country. With Plough’s success and new found fortune, he gave (or I've also heard sold for a very inexpensive price) the building to Earnestine and Hazel. This transaction occurred some time in the 1950s, from what I can tell.  Having no interest in running a sundry, the ladies decided to turn the downstairs area into a jazz cafe. Earnestine’s husband, Andrew, who went by the name of Sunbeam, opened a venue nearby for musicians, called Club Paradise. This was not the first business venture of Sunbeam Mitchell though. Throughout his years as a promoter, Mitchell had opened several music venues, a restaurant, and even a hotel for African Americans, which were scarce in those times. Earnestine kept the books and ran the hotel.  The Mitchells and Plough were not strangers to each other either. One of Sunbeam’s music venues (Club Handy) and the Mitchell hotel were on the second and third floors of the Pantaze Drugs, which again was owned by Plough, on Beale St. (Wet Willie’s currently occupies this building.)  Club Paradise was the largest and most prestigious nightclub in Memphis. It could hold up to 3200 people. Numerous acts such as locals Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters played there, as well as big named acts Ike & Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, & Sam Cook.

I had the wonderful opportunity to Dj at Club Paradise for their grand opening back in April of 2018. I've wanted to release this set for a while now, but now here we are. Having been at Dancers Showclub the last 9 years, I still feel there is a level of excellence I have not achieved in the industry yet even though I'm a 16 year veteran. My direction these days will be Podcasts and Vlogs, along with the launch of Dizz Global Radio in February ( a Mixcloud Select exclusive).
