On March 6, 1971, a group of some of the top musicians from the United States – Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, The Staples Singers, Santana, and more – boarded a plane bound for Ghana to perform in a musical celebration that was dubbed the “Soul to Soul Festival”. Thousands of audience members filled Accra's Black Star Square for a continuous 15 hours of music. The festival was planned in part for the annual celebration of Ghana's independence, but also an invitation for a “homecoming” for these noted African-American artists to return to Africa. This episode revisits the famed music festival and explores the longstanding legacy of cultural exchange with African diasporans originally set forth in the 1950s by Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana. Tune in for interviews with noted musicologist John Collins, poet and scholar Tsitsi Ella Jaji, concert goers and more. Produced by Brandi Howell. APWW #829

As this podcast goes to air, we've just moved through the first New Moon of 2024. The Capricorn energy of this New Moon is an earth element that is helping you to feel grounded in this year. I love the sayings, and the mantras that have been coming forward that rhyme with 4. Manifest more in 2024. Love more in 2024. Curious more in 2024 .. that's one of mine. Winter is a time to go deep within and allow for the body, mind, spirit, and emotions to heal and clear. It's a time to work with the ancestors, break patterns, dream for new paths, and envision the infinite. Today on the show, I wanted to talk about my soul purpose, why I do what I do, and to offer a soul clearing. This past year, I finished out many spiritual contracts. With those endings, an opening, a portal to expand and create new contracts, came forward for me. Out of the void comes a new newness that can feel scary to go through. That is where trust comes in. My spiritual gifts expand through these experiences, my teachings, and working with my private mentoring students, helping me to recognize how I show up for humanity at this time. Working with our energy body, our subtle body, through the Soul is the deepest level most people aren't taught to access. But what I have “proved” with my work this past year (years) is that as you are taught and through practice, you can learn to work with your soul to transform obstacles in opportunities.. struggles into success. In humanity right now, we feel many things. On the one hand, so grateful to be putting the pandemic aside and finding growth in ourselves and our community. Yet, on the other hand, there is a fear. Could it happen again? There is also a huge vibration of loneliness going around, feeling isolated and struggling to reconnect to society. Through all of this, a winding up of energy... hurry, hurry, hurry to do more, to be more. Yes, it is projected to be an abundant year, like I was saying at the start… but not in an anxious, don't breathe, hurry up kind of way. Helping people recognize the spiritual being that they are in their human body is my soul's purpose. In today's episode, I offer an Akashic Group Clearing with Healing Guides to help clear the obstacles or struggles you may be feeling. Allow the Healing Guides to help you pull out the old energies. Align with your highest self. Thanks again for listening. To your Spirit, Terri PS.. With this new season, I have a few openings for my Empowered Spirit Private Mentoring Program. A program that will help you transform your life, leave your old story behind, find trust in your inner guidance, and live your dreams.. not someone else… all by building a spiritual practice tailored for you. January 2, 2024Leslie "Les" McCann, an exceptional jazz pianist, composer and vocalist who discovered a young Roberta Flack, and whose own works have been sampled by countless hip-hop artists, died last Friday (Dec. 29) at the age of 88.Born into a musical family, Sept. 23, 1935 in Lexington, Kentucky, McCann would become one of jazz music's "most gifted and influential artists," reads a statement from Kevin Gore, president of Global Catalog, Recorded Music for Warner Music Group.A self-taught pianist, McCann was an innovator in the soul jazz style, fusing jazz with funk, soul and world rhythms. He mastered all instruments before him, and enjoyed an unusual breakthrough, by winning a Navy talent contest, opening the door to an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.An early hit came with "The Shampoo," the 1963 instrumental cut with his trio for Pacific Jazz Records.McCann would enjoy a fruitful relationship with Atlantic Records, releasing a dozen albums on the label from the late-‘60s through to the mid-‘70s.During that run, Atlantic released Swiss Movement, featuring McCann, frequent collaborator, saxophonist and labelmate Eddie Harris, and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The album earned a Grammy nomination for best jazz performance – small group or soloist with small group, and included the protest song, "Compared to What," which McCann and Co. performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969.Another career highlight would come in 1971, when McCann appeared with a starry cast of artists, including Wilson Pickett, The Staple Singers, Santana and Ike & Tina Turner, for an historic 14-hour concert in Accra, Ghana. The event was captured for the concert film Soul To Soul. His ears might have been just as impressive as his hands. It was McCann who discovered and recommended Roberta Flack to Atlantic Records.A stroke in the 1990s slowed McCann's output. So he channeled his energies into painting and photography, and he recovered for a string of music releases, including Pump It Up from 2002.Gore remembers McCann as a great of jazz, the creator of "timeless" works. "While we deeply mourn his passing," Gore continues, "his music will live on in the hearts of millions of music fans across the globe."https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/les-mccann-grammy-nominated-jazz-pianist-and-vocalist-dies-at-88/ar-AA1mlFuf

Today's special guest is Gabrielle Thil, a “Soul to Soul Relationship Coach” who is passionate about helping women to fully embrace their love journey, releasing their insecurities and opening up to attract their magical soul to soul relationship. During this interview she shares her own journey and leads us through a “breath of fire” exercise to raise our energy so that in her words “magic can happen”! Welcome Gabrielle! I'm so excited to have you with us today. But before we jump into the topic of soul-to-soul relationships, will you please tell our listeners a little bit about yourself? And how did you get into this work? Gabrielle: Yeah, so, first of all, thank you so much for inviting me, I am really happy to be here with you. Everything started with my own struggles, in relationships 20 years ago. So, at that time in my life, I was working in the entertainment industry. And I had some relationships, but really, those that were not fulfilling, were not very happy. And I decided to consult with a relationship coach who was really working on the spiritual part of their relationships. And so I started to work with this woman, parents and friends… because I'm French. And I worked for a long time with this woman, and it opened me so many doors and my perspective and relationships and spirituality completely shifted. And, it's when I really started a deep work and the deep awakening of my soul. And I really started to see that my heart was so closed, because I was sort of ready to be rejected to be hurt. And so, in many ways, I was keeping myself safe. And so, it was really complicated to be in a relationship without really allowing myself to be seen and to be vulnerable. So well, I did some, some deep work with this woman to reopen my heart and really reconnect my soul. And a few months later, I actually met my husband, on the “Pilgrim Paths” in Spain, my husband is Spanish and so I moved to Spain, a few months later, and we've been together since and so really, seeing those beautiful changes within me, led me to deepen even more as this work and I started to work with other teachers later on, to really deepen my, knowledge and wisdom around relationships and so this is how I then started to share with women I knew first, some friends and later on some, some clients and says, “This is what I have been doing now for a few years and really happy to see the changes and women coming back to their soul reopening their hearts in a way that feels safe for them so they can really embrace the love path and finally, love and be loved.”Gabrielle goes on to talk about how she works with clients, how she met her own husband and states several examples of other women experiencing success. You are bound to enjoy the “breath of fire” exercise that she leads us through during this interesting episode of “Call IT in With Dar”!Support the show

From a human connection standpoint, wouldn't it be better if we all were more childish, just playing and showing up just the way we are? To our guest, the fabulous Rachel Awes, even if it sounds cliche, the world would be a much better place if all of us moved from the softness of our hearts. Rachel Awes is a Psychologist, Author, Art Playgroundist, Speaker, and Clothing Ambassador. She has a unique approach to life and a colorful philosophy to see things she gracefully shared in our conversation. Rachel is the author of three beautiful books, "All I did was listen," "The great green okayness," and "Diving in," which we discuss and take some valuable nuggets from them. Today, our conversation spins around Rachel's intoxicating view of the world, life, and human interaction. We delve into the powerful message of "Diving in," of how we can decide to live our lives from the edge, or we can dive into the water, blend in, and enjoy the uncertainty of taking our chances. Rachel shared some advice for those who feel they aren't ready yet to dive in, the crucial importance of active hearing, and much more. Spacious and thoughtful are two words I would use to describe my friend, May. And I'd also use those words to describe our conversation where May shares some of her experiences as a Chinese-Australian woman, the feeling of otherness, and what helps her feel fully expressed. I am honored that May accepted my invitation and we are able to share this conversation where we related soul to soul.
